Body Brokerage: Inside The Trafficking Of Human Materials, Michelle Prizzi Sep 2019

Body Brokerage: Inside The Trafficking Of Human Materials, Michelle Prizzi

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 2011 Scott Carney, anthropologist and investigative journalist, introduced the public to the horrifying underworld of the Red Market, the illegal trade of human materials. Carney’s book The Red Market: On the Trail of the World’s Organ Brokers, Bone Thieves, Blood Farmers, and Child Traffickers (2011) deduces through ethnographic experiences that “[r]ed markets are the product of contradictions, aris[ing] when social taboos surrounding the human body collide with the individual urge to live a long, happy life” (5). The web behind this twisted niche of the black market is expansive and has a hold in many countries worldwide including the …

Lithic Material Procurement And Processing Of The Ancestral Puebloans In Montezuma Canyon, Richae Knudsen Sep 2019

Lithic Material Procurement And Processing Of The Ancestral Puebloans In Montezuma Canyon, Richae Knudsen

Student Works

Recent analysis of lithic materials from Ancestral Puebloan sites in Montezuma Canyon demonstrates differences between the northern and southern sites in terms of practices of lithic procurement and processing. Materials from Alkali Ridge and Coal Bed Village had more lithic debitage without cortex, while those from Cave Canyon Village and Three Kiva Ruin had a much higher frequency of debitage with cortex. These data sets suggest that the northern sites performed primary flaking away from home, while those in the south did their primary flaking at home. This distinct behavior may be a result of differential access to lithic material …

Emotional Labor And Emotion Management: Power And Negotiation Among Female Laotian Migrant Sex Workers In A Karaoke Bar, Nattawut Singkul, Pimpawun Boonmongkon, Thomas E. Guadamuz

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The growth of the sex trade is connected with globalization and cross-border migration. There is an increase of young female Laotian sex workers who respond to the demand of Thai male customers. Emotion and sexuality are integrated as an essential part of sexual goods and services, and are essential tools for sex workers to generate business profits and customer satisfaction. The study’s objectives are to study the expression of emotion and sexuality among female Lao migrant sex workers (FLMSWs) who work in one Thai-Lao cross border town, and to analyze the management and negotiation of emotion and sexuality in the …

Linguistic Ideologies In The Performance Of Bulgarian Identity, Chelsey Norman Sep 2019

Linguistic Ideologies In The Performance Of Bulgarian Identity, Chelsey Norman

Purdue Linguistics, Literature, and Second Language Studies Conference

Since the end of Communism in 1989 and joining the European Union in 2007, Bulgarians have experienced much greater mobility and access to the global community. Despite this more global perspective, Bulgarians maintain a strong sense of national identity. Given this interplay between global and national identities, Bulgaria is an apt location to conduct this ideological research. Using a combination of ethnographic observations (June-July 2018) and semi-structured interviews with bilingual Bulgarians in Sofia, this study examines how large-scale phenomena like nationalism and globalization are found in the micro-scale interactional construction of identity. Results show that a great deal of ideological …

Faculty Publications

Objective Progress towards equitable and sufficient water has primarily been measured by population-level data on water availability. However, higher-resolution measures of water accessibility, adequacy, reliability and safety (ie, water insecurity) are needed to understand how problems with water impact health and well-being. Therefore, we developed the Household Water InSecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale to measure household water insecurity in an equivalent way across disparate cultural and ecological settings.

Methods Cross-sectional surveys were implemented in 8127 households across 28 sites in 23 low-income and middle-income countries. Data collected included 34 items on water insecurity in the prior month; socio-demographics; water acquisition, use …

Interpreting For Cross-Cultural Research: Changing Written English To American Sign Language, Helene Cohen, Elaine G. Jones Sep 2019

Interpreting For Cross-Cultural Research: Changing Written English To American Sign Language, Helene Cohen, Elaine G. Jones

JADARA

The quality of cross-cultural research depends on the skills of the investigators and interpreters who participate in each study. This paper addresses sign language interpreters' participation in translating quantitative instruments from written English (source language) into American Sign Language (target language) for use in cross-cultural studies of people who are part of Deaf culture. First, research goals should be explicitly identified as either operational or comparative, and matched appropriately with an asymmetrical or symmetrical translation strategy. Next, interpreters often use a back translation process, with multiple checks on the conceptual integrity of the target language version of the instrument. Qualifications …

Effects Of Short-Term Human-Horse Interactions On Human Heart Rate Variability: A Multiple Single Case Study, Saan Ecker, Amy Lykins Sep 2019

Effects Of Short-Term Human-Horse Interactions On Human Heart Rate Variability: A Multiple Single Case Study, Saan Ecker, Amy Lykins

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Influences from human-horse interactions form the basis of the emerging field of equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP). However, the psychophysiological effects of horses on humans in the EAP context have been underinvestigated. This multiple single case design study examined the effects of short-term human-horse interactions on human heart rate variability (HRV). Nine adults with limited prior experience with horses participated in time-limited in vivo exposures to five different free-roaming horses in a yard. Results were mixed with HRV improving from a preexposure baseline in 40% and deteriorating in 23% of the 43 ten-minute horse-human interactions. In the remaining horse-human interactions, HRV was …

Creating And Contesting Latter-Day Saint Pilgrimage To Nauvoo, Illinois, Scott Esplin Sep 2019

Creating And Contesting Latter-Day Saint Pilgrimage To Nauvoo, Illinois, Scott Esplin

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (frequently referred to as Latter-day Saints or Mormons) share with other faiths a desire to celebrate sites significant to their founding. By memorialising religious sacred space, the Church of Jesus Christ has created a desire among many of its more than sixteen million members to retrace the steps of their early faith leaders as pilgrims. As with other religious sites around the world, Latter-day Saint pilgrimage destinations have also become scenes of contestation. Churches that divided from the original movement offer rival interpretations of the its history and beliefs, leading …

Pilgrimage And Ancestors: The Importance Of Return, Jörgen Hellman Sep 2019

Pilgrimage And Ancestors: The Importance Of Return, Jörgen Hellman

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Drawing on ethnographic material from pilgrimages on West Java I argue that understandings of pilgrimage will benefit from including the return home in order to fully appreciate the meaning it holds for pilgrims. If we include into the study an extensive period after coming home, it facilitates situating the practice in a specific socio-cultural context and helps to understand how a pilgrimage partakes in these settings rather than being a ‘ “one off” transient and extraordinary’ event (Reader 2005:249). The meaning of pilgrimage described in the paper is formed by deep seated cultural notions about ancestors and descent. In the …
