Understanding Microplastics In Freshwater: From Little Stream To Big River, Morgan Anderson Dec 2019

Understanding Microplastics In Freshwater: From Little Stream To Big River, Morgan Anderson

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The purpose of this study is to better understand how microplastics move through rivers. Microplastics can come from various sources, but the main characteristic of them is their size. These plastics have diameters between 10 nanometers and 5mm. Because these particles are easily confused with food sources, ingestion and bioaccumulation of microplastics in many aquatic organisms has been a hot topic for concern (Besseling et al, 2017; Liedermann et. al, 2018; Nel et. al, 2018; Siegfried et. al, 2017; Windsor et. al, 2019). Ingestion of these microplastics can be detrimental to both human and ecological health due to pathogen accumulation …

Late Jurassic Dinosaurs On The Move, Gastroliths And Long-Distance Migration, Josh Malone Dec 2019

Late Jurassic Dinosaurs On The Move, Gastroliths And Long-Distance Migration, Josh Malone

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Jurassic Morrison Formation of the Rocky Mountain and Colorado Plateau regions is famous for its dinosaur fossils. The Morrison Formation (150-157 Ma) is comprised mostly of sandstone and mudstone that was deposited in a terrestrial deposition system that included fluvial, paludal, and lacustrine environments. Paleocurrent data indicates that Morrison sediment was transported to the north and east. Within the Morrison Formation, we find exotic pebble and cobble-size durable clasts of quartzite, chert and vein quartz weathering out of the mudstone paleosols. We interpret these exotic clasts as gastroliths, carried within the gastric mills of dinosaurs. For this study, we …

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

I searched and searched and could not find any. It was seldom I needed birthday candles. Truth be told, it had probably been a decade since I last used them. I scavenged in a drawer-the one containing bread ties and postage stamps-for used candles. Stubs would do for the purpose of lighting and then extinguishing. But, in a fit of "organizing," I must have cleaned them out. I had no idea they would become hard to replace.

Analysis Of Tornadogenesis Failure Using Rapid-Scan Data From The Atmospheric Imaging Radar, Kyle Pittman, Andrew Mahre, David Bodine, Casey Griffin, Jim Kurdzo, Victor Gensini Dec 2019

Analysis Of Tornadogenesis Failure Using Rapid-Scan Data From The Atmospheric Imaging Radar, Kyle Pittman, Andrew Mahre, David Bodine, Casey Griffin, Jim Kurdzo, Victor Gensini

Honors Capstones

Tornadogenesis in supercell thunderstorms has been a heavily studied topic by the atmospheric science community for several decades. However, the reasons why some supercells produce tornadoes, while others in similar environments and with similar characteristics do not, remains poorly understood. For this study, tornadogenesis failure is defined as a supercell appearing capable of tornado production, both visually and by meeting a vertically contiguous differential velocity (∆V) threshold, without producing a sustained tornado. Data from a supercell that appeared capable of tornadogenesis, but which failed to produce a sustained tornado, was collected by the Atmospheric Imaging Radar (the AIR, a high …

Prior to euthanasia, a 70 µL bolus of insulin/X-ray contrast agent was infused while recording a pressure profile (peak tubing pressure, pmax; area under the pressure curve, …

Bilateral Chemical Labyrinthectomy Disrupts Exploratory Behavior In Mice, Mark T. Banovetz Dec 2019

Bilateral Chemical Labyrinthectomy Disrupts Exploratory Behavior In Mice, Mark T. Banovetz

Honors Capstones

Animals use multiple sources of information to maintain spatial orientation, including self-movement and environmental cues. Self-movement cues are processed by the vestibular system, and animals with congenital vestibular defects exhibit impairments in self-movement cue processing but not environmental cue processing. No study currently exists to examine the exploratory behavior of mice following complete bilateral vestibular lesions. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of bilateral chemical labyrinthectomies on mouse exploratory behavior under dark and light conditions at two time points. Motion tracking software was used to capture mouse exploratory behavior, such as path circuity and change in …

The 14-3-3 (Ywha) Proteins In Signalling And Development Of The Fruit Fly, Drosophila Melanogaster, Santanu De Dec 2019

The 14-3-3 (Ywha) Proteins In Signalling And Development Of The Fruit Fly, Drosophila Melanogaster, Santanu De

Biology Faculty Articles

The 14-3-3 (YWHA or Tyrosine 3-Monooxygenase/Tryptophan 5-Monooxygenase Activation proteins) are a family of highly conserved, homologous proteins critical to diverse cellular events including cell cycle, signal transduction and embryonic development. Various species-specific isoforms of 14-3-3 exist, encoded by separate genes. They are expressed in a wide variety of organisms ranging from plants to animals, including the fruit fly or Drosophila melanogaster. Drosophila is one of the most universally accepted model systems to study complex cellular mechanisms of signalling and development. However, regulation of these processes in fruit flies by the 14-3-3 proteins have not been entirely understood. This mini …

Food Waste Management Networks: Novel Methods For Overcoming Emerging Logistics Challenges, William R. Armington Dec 2019

Food Waste Management Networks: Novel Methods For Overcoming Emerging Logistics Challenges, William R. Armington

Theses

The U.S. produces an estimated 63 million tons of food waste per year. Interest from state and local governments in diverting unused food from landfills to alternative treatment facilities is growing. However, this emerging food waste (FW) stream will face logistics challenges as diversion networks expand. Current methods for evaluating challenges are insufficient for providing solutions for network development because they do not explore the impacts of variability in the food waste management system. This dissertation aims to fill this knowledge gap by exploring three key research areas.

First, variability in FW generation from different types of commercial generators is …

The Local Translation Of Kna In Dendritic Projections Of Auditory Neurons And The Roles Of Kna In The Transition From Hidden To Overt Hearing Loss, Jeong Han Lee, Mincheol Kang, Seojin Park, Maria C. Perez-Flores, Xiao-Dong Zhang, Wenying Wang, Michael Anne Gratton, Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, Ebenezer N. Yamoah

Open Access Publications

Local and privileged expression of dendritic proteins allows segregation of distinct functions in a single neuron but may represent one of the underlying mechanisms for early and insidious presentation of sensory neuropathy. Tangible characteristics of early hearing loss (HL) are defined in correlation with nascent hidden hearing loss (HHL) in humans and animal models. Despite the plethora of causes of HL, only two prevailing mechanisms for HHL have been identified, and in both cases, common structural deficits are implicated in inner hair cell synapses, and demyelination of the auditory nerve (AN). We uncovered that Na

Preserving Evolutionary History With Improved Confidence, K. Bodie Weedop, A. Ø. Mooers, C. M. Tucker, William D. Pearse

Ecology Center Publications

We thank Faith (2019) and Mindell (2019) for their insightful perspectives on our study of the impact of phylogenetic imputation on the assessment of evolutionary distinctiveness (ED; Isaac et al., 2007). As Mindell highlights, the finding that ED scores for species on a phylogeny are remarkably robust despite having species missing from that phylogeny is encouraging; our results suggest that we can be confident in moving forward with prioritization of the species for which we have data. This is important because in some cases, for example, it may take considerable time to obtain samples …

Global Impacts From Improved Tropical Forages: A Meta-Analysis Revealing Overlooked Benefits And Costs, Evolving Values And New Priorities, Douglas S. White, Michael Peters, Peter Horne

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The wider use and improved performance of planted tropical forages can substantially change social, economic and environmental landscapes. By reviewing impact-related studies published in the past two decades, this paper shows how evolving development priorities have influenced the types of impacts being documented. A meta-analysis was used to examine 98 studies according to: (1) breadth of reported effects, as related to development goals of social equity, economic growth and environmental sustainability; (2) extent of effects, ranging from intermediate to longer-term impacts; and (3) measurement precision (identification, description and quantification). Impacts have been assessed for fewer than half of the documented …

Response Of Axonopus Catarinensis And Arachis Pintoi To Shade Conditions, A. N. A. Pachas, E. J. Jacobo, M. C. Goldfarb, S. M. Lacorte

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In the north-east of Argentina, there are more than 100,000 hectares of silvopastoral systems where trees, forages and livestock are combined with the goal to diversify income, reduce financial risk, obtain more profit and enhance environmental benefit (Cubbage et al. 2013). The rapid adoption of this production system by farmers has generated high demand for information on shade tolerant grass and legume forage species.

Axonopus catarinensis is a native grass from Itajai Vally (Brazil) that was introduced to the north-east of Argentina 10 years ago; whereas Arachis pintoi is a sub-tropical legume (also native to Brazil) adapted to acid …

Scenario Analysis: Risk And Return Of Aluminium Tolerant Lucerne, Claire D. Lewis, J. L. Jacobs, K. F. Smith, G. Spangenberg, B. Malcolm

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) yield is limited by aluminium stress associated with acid soils (Campbell et al. 1988; Scott et al. 2008). With the aid of transgenic technologies, the development of aluminium tolerant (Al Tol) lucerne is proposed. Modelled scenario analysis was conducted to explore the potential net benefits of Al Tol lucerne as part of a grazing system for a sheep production system in the high rainfall zone of south west Victoria.

Plantain (Plantago Lanceolata) Outperforms Chicory (Cichorium Intybus) Under Moisture Stress In Glasshouse, Lydia M. Cave, Peter D. Kemp, Paul R. Kenyon, Stephen T. Morris

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forage chicory (Cichorium intybus) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata) are now widely used throughout the world as high feed quality perennial herbage (Sanderson et al. 2003; Labreveux et al. 2006; Li et al. 2010; Golding et al. 2011; Hutton et al. 2011). Both are taprooted plants and are thus likely to confer a degree of drought tolerance through accessing water deeper in the soil profile (Kemp et al. 2010). Nie et al. (2008) reported chicory can tolerate moisture stress to a greater degree than plantain. However, overall little is known …

Mission-Driven Recordkeeping: The Need For Rim Staff In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Mercer Dec 2019

Mission-Driven Recordkeeping: The Need For Rim Staff In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Mercer

School of Information Student Research Journal

As a robust and growing industry, often with strong ties to communities served, there is much potential for nonprofit organizations to harness powerful and rich databases of cultural information not found in any other sector. Yet research shows that in most cases, nonprofit organizations operate on limited budgets, tight deadlines, and may see the task of properly managing records as counter-productive to the mission of the organization. This research examines the systems of recordkeeping in nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and argues that record keeping staff must be considered an essential component for a nonprofit organization to survive and thrive.

Past Management Spurs Differential Plant Communities Within A Giant Single-Clone Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers, Jan ŠEbesta Dec 2019

Past Management Spurs Differential Plant Communities Within A Giant Single-Clone Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers, Jan ŠEbesta

Ecology Center Publications

Sustainable aspen ecosystems hold great promise for global biodiversity conservation. These forests harbor relatively high species diversity, yet are threatened by fire suppression, land development, timber-focused management, extended droughts, and chronic herbivory. “Pando” is a high-profile quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) forest in Utah, USA which is putatively the ‘largest living organism on earth.’ Pando comprises an estimated 47,000 genetically identical stems, but is threatened by human impacts. Our interest in the present study is whether changes to the giant organism were affecting understorey vegetation and whether discrete zones are displaying divergent community compositions. For instance, recent research has demonstrated strong …

The Effect Of Chronic Wasting Disease On Resident Deer Hunting Permit Demand In Wisconsin, Dane Erickson, Carson Reeling, John G. Lee Dec 2019

The Effect Of Chronic Wasting Disease On Resident Deer Hunting Permit Demand In Wisconsin, Dane Erickson, Carson Reeling, John G. Lee

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has had a negative impact on deer license demand in Wisconsin since it was first found in the state in 2002. Prior work evaluates the effect of CWD on hunting permit sales, but only in the period immediately after the disease was discovered. We use data on hunting permit sales, permit price, and other demand shifters to estimate a model of deer permit demand for the period 1966–2015. We use the estimated model to quantify the effect of CWD on (1) hunter demand for deer permits; (2) hunter surplus from hunting; and (3) lost hunting permit …

The Nato Allies And Intervention In Libya, Jimmy M. Wong Dec 2019

The Nato Allies And Intervention In Libya, Jimmy M. Wong

Open Access Dissertations

In 2011, protest movements calling for political reform in the Middle East and North Africa proliferated throughout the region. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany each would respond in a variety of ways gradually moving towards finding these protest movements within their national interests. Tracking each state’s response to the Arab Spring, this dissertation seeks to understand how and why they found it within their national interest eventually to intervene militarily, or not, in Libya. This exegetical study utilizes a securitization theory approach to understand the process by which these protest movements did or did not move …
