The Effect Of Spinal Cord Injury On Sexual Function., Casey J. Steadman Aug 2019

The Effect Of Spinal Cord Injury On Sexual Function., Casey J. Steadman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe neurological impairment with widespread motor, autonomic and sensory deficits, leading to a substantial quality of life impairment. The number of individuals with SCI increases by approximately 12,500 annually, and over 80% of individuals with SCI are males. SCI individuals rate sexual function as a top priority quality of life issue, and men with SCI likely suffer from sexual dysfunction, such as erectile and ejaculatory dysfunction, as well as infertility. Regardless of the high status of importance of sexual function, limited numbers of experimental studies in SCI animal models have focused on sexual function after …

Improving Flow-Induced Hemolysis Prediction Models., Mohammad Mohaghegh Faghih Aug 2019

Improving Flow-Induced Hemolysis Prediction Models., Mohammad Mohaghegh Faghih

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Partial or complete failure of red blood cell membrane, also known as hemolysis, is a persistent issue with almost all blood contacting devices. Many experimental and theoretical contributions over the last few decades have increased insight into the mechanisms of mechanical hemolysis in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes, with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive, mechanistic and universal hemolysis prediction model. My research is broadly divided into two sections: theoretical/analytical/Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses and experimental tests. The first part of my research revolved entirely around analyzing the simplest and most popular hemolysis model, commonly called as the …

Algebraic Properties Of Neural Codes., Katie C. Christensen Aug 2019

Algebraic Properties Of Neural Codes., Katie C. Christensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neural rings and ideals as algebraic tools for analyzing the intrinsic structure of neural codes were introduced by C. Curto, V. Itskov, A. Veliz-Cuba, and N. Youngs in 2013. Since then they have been investigated in several papers, including the 2017 paper by S. G\"unt\"urk\"un, J. Jeffries, and J. Sun, in which the notion of polarization of neural ideals was introduced. We extend their ideas by introducing the polarization of motifs and neural codes, and show that these notions have very nice properties which allow the studying of the intrinsic structure of neural codes of length $n$ via the …

Christian Teachers’ Experiences Motivating High School Students In The Pacific Northwest: A Transcendental Phenomenology, Michael Anthony Rickman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study sought to describe experiences of Christian high school teachers motivating students in the Pacific Northwest to be autonomous learners, competent in skills and achievements, and relationally balanced within a Christian environment. The literature indicates two phenomena exist. First, student motivation decreases as they progress; and second, a gap exists in the literature related to Christian schoolteachers’ experiences motivating students. The research question is “How do Christian high school teachers describe their experiences motivating students to be autonomous, competent, and relational?” Purposeful sampling produced nine participants from Christian high schools in the Pacific …

Quantification Of Image Texture In X-Ray Phase-Contrast-Enhanced Projection Images Of In Vivo Mouse Lungs Observed At Varied Inflation Pressures, Frank J Brooks, Sean P Gunsten, Sunil K Vasireddi, Steven L Brody, Mark A Anastasio

Open Access Publications

To date, there are very limited noninvasive, regional assays of in vivo lung microstructure near the alveolar level. It has been suggested that x-ray phase-contrast enhanced imaging reveals information about the air volume of the lung; however, the image texture information in these images remains underutilized. Projection images of in vivo mouse lungs were acquired via a tabletop, propagation-based, X-ray phase-contrast imaging system. Anesthetized mice were mechanically ventilated in an upright position. Consistent with previously published studies, a distinct image texture was observed uniquely within lung regions. Lung regions were automatically identified using supervised machine learning applied to summary measures …

Background: The sperm DNA methylation landscape is unique and critical for offspring health. If gamete-derived DNA methylation escapes reprograming in early embryos, epigenetic defects in sperm may be transmitted to the next generation. Current techniques to assess sperm DNA methylation show bias toward CpG-dense regions and do not target areas of dynamic methylation, those predicted to be environmentally sensitive and tunable regulatory elements.

Objectives: Our goal was to assess variation in human sperm DNA methylation and design a targeted capture panel to interrogate the human sperm methylome.

Methods: To characterize variation in sperm DNA methylation, we performed whole genome bisulfite …

Environmental enrichment is one of the most successful methods to help minimize these types of behaviors in many captive wild animals. The current study investigated preferences of play items and scents for seven adult Bengal tigers in a Tiger Sanctuary using a free-operant preference assessment. Two subspecies of Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) are represented. Six of the tigers are Panthera tigris tigris and one is Panthera tigris altaica. Three phases were run on each tiger, ultimately establishing a hierarchy of preferred play items and …

Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell Aug 2019

Amphibious Entrepreneurs And The Origins Of Invention, Kurt Sandholtz, Walter W. Powell

Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we examine entrepreneurs who carry ideas, technologies, values, and assumptions between previously unrelated spheres of economic or cultural activity, and in the process, change the existing order of things. We label such individuals amphibious entrepreneurs and explore their characteristics via four case studies. Their stories suggest a distinct species within the genus of entrepreneur: more pragmatic than heroic, and as likely to invent by not knowing any better as by calculative creation. We discuss their role in creating interstitial spaces, contrast them to other boundary-spanning actors, and identify directions for future research at the intersection of social …

Real-Time Pcr Combined With Dna Barcoding For The Authentication Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) Fillets, Rachel Isaacs Aug 2019

Real-Time Pcr Combined With Dna Barcoding For The Authentication Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) Fillets, Rachel Isaacs

Food Science (MS) Theses

Seafood substitution is a worldwide problem due to factors such as limited monitoring coupled with complex supply chains. Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) is a highly valued and overfished species that is commonly substituted with other fish, such as tilapia, rockfish, and other snapper species. DNA barcoding is typically used by regulatory agencies to detect seafood substitution; however, it is expensive and time-consuming. A rapid, real-time PCR assay targeting red snapper was developed previously for use in fisheries management; however, it has not been tested for its ability to detect red snapper species substitution. The objective of this study …

Family Math Night: Increasing Engagement In University Mathematics Courses For Prospective Teachers, Eva Thanheiser Aug 2019

Family Math Night: Increasing Engagement In University Mathematics Courses For Prospective Teachers, Eva Thanheiser

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Prospective elementary school teachers (PSTs) often do not perceive mathematics activities as fun or engaging and perceive the mathematics tasks in their university content courses as inauthentic and irrelevant. Both these points were addressed by connecting the university classroom tasks to the K–5 environment via a Family Math Night (FMN). Survey results from 23 PSTs showed that PSTs were excited about the authenticity of the tasks, learned about children’s mathematical thinking, and reconceptualized mathematics learning as potentially enjoyable. In combination, these results may lead to PSTs’ increased engagement in the mathematics content course and, thus, result in their increased mathematics …

An Update On The Management Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Surgical Perspective, Tawan Imvised Aug 2019

An Update On The Management Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Surgical Perspective, Tawan Imvised

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common of neonatal surgical emergency. The initial signs are nonspecific and often indistinguishable from other neonatal problems. Abdominal radiography (AR) is the first modality imaging for diagnosis NEC and remains as the standard modality since the Bell staging system was developed. Ultrasonography (US) playing an increasing role in NEC. There is the potential for US to bridge the lack of sensitivity of AR for NEC. Understanding the influence of the pathophysiological dynamic of NEC and its variation with gestational age on AR or US findings is important to distinguish NEC from NEC-like conditions. Surgical …

Microbial Community, Functioning, And Its Relationship With Heavy Metals In An Urban Brownfield, Jay Prakash Singh Aug 2019

Microbial Community, Functioning, And Its Relationship With Heavy Metals In An Urban Brownfield, Jay Prakash Singh

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The ubiquity of urban brownfields presents a challenge for environmental managers for managing degraded ecosystems that are in close contact with human habitation. Presence of metal contaminants in brownfields further complicate the matters as it cannot be degraded and hence pose a high risk to human and environmental health, and well-being of the local community. However, previous studies indicate that management and restoration of brownfields are possible through the use of low input longer term and sustainable remediation approaches. These sustainable approaches include the use of plants, fungi, and bacteria to increase soil function and mitigate risks from the contaminants. …

Examining A Hypothyroid Model Of Depressive Symptoms In Mice: Tests Of Behavioral Measures, Hannah S. Ovadia Aug 2019

Examining A Hypothyroid Model Of Depressive Symptoms In Mice: Tests Of Behavioral Measures, Hannah S. Ovadia

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There is abundant evidence suggesting that Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is closely related to thyroid hormone (TH) function, but the exact nature of this relationship is poorly defined in the literature. The present study examined whether hypothyroidism could viably model symptoms of MDD in mice using established behavioral paradigms. It was expected that hypothyroidism would produce anhedonia-like behavior in the saccharin preference test, anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze, and spatial memory impairment in the object placement task. C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to one of three groups, which received either a control diet, diet infused with 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (hypothyroid …

Extending The Boundaries Of Supply Chain Transparency: Supplier Monitoring Activity Disclosure, Consumer Evaluations, And Brand Equity, Yanji Duan Aug 2019

Extending The Boundaries Of Supply Chain Transparency: Supplier Monitoring Activity Disclosure, Consumer Evaluations, And Brand Equity, Yanji Duan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Socially responsible policy makers and consumers are pressuring firms to make their supply chains more transparent by disclosing information about their supplier monitoring activities (SMA). Yet, high monitoring costs and the complexity of supply chains pose challenges for firms to effectively monitor their extended supply chain, including both first-tier and lower-tier suppliers. In order to comprehensively evaluate the net benefit from SMA, it is therefore critical to consider potential effects on drivers of additional revenues that may accrue from the disclosure of SMA to consumers.

Prior research on SMA has examined the associated cost, risk, and supplier relational implications on …

Impact Of Excitation-Inhibition Balance/Imbalance On Dynamics Of Cortical Neural Networks, Vidit Agrawal Aug 2019

Impact Of Excitation-Inhibition Balance/Imbalance On Dynamics Of Cortical Neural Networks, Vidit Agrawal

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to study the implications of Excitation/Inhibition balance and imbalance on the dynamics of ongoing (spontaneous) neural activity in the cerebral cortex region of the brain.

The first research work addresses the question that why among the continuum of Excitation-Inhibition balance configurations, particular configuration should be favored? We calculate the entropy of neural network dynamics by studying an analytically tractable network of binary neurons. Our main result from this work is that the entropy maximizes at regime which is neither excitation-dominant nor inhibition-dominant but at the boundary of both. Along this boundary we see there …

Gender In Apocalyptic California: The Ecological Frontier, Marykate Eileen Messimer Aug 2019

Gender In Apocalyptic California: The Ecological Frontier, Marykate Eileen Messimer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Climate change is the consequence of ideologies that promote human reproduction and resource consumption by sacrificing human justice, nonhuman species, and the land. Both biology and queer ecologies resist this notion of human separation and supremacy by showing that no body is a singular, impermeable entity, that all beings are biologically and inexorably connected. My dissertation demonstrates that fiction writers use this knowledge to locate a utopian vision that can counteract the dystopian impotence of living within climate change. This argument is founded on novels written by women and set in California, a state that uniquely inhabits a utopian and …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Age On Regenerative Outcomes Following Treatment Of Volumetric Muscle Loss Injuries, John Taehwan Kim Aug 2019

Investigation Of The Effect Of Age On Regenerative Outcomes Following Treatment Of Volumetric Muscle Loss Injuries, John Taehwan Kim

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) is a traumatic injury in skeletal muscle resulting in the bulk loss of more than 20% of the muscle’s volume. Included in the bulk loss of muscle is the skeletal muscle niche comprised of nerve bundles, vasculature, local progenitor cells, basal lamina, and muscle fibers, overwhelming innate repair mechanisms. The hallmark of VML injury is the excessive accumulation of non-contractile, fibrotic tissue and permanent functional deficits. Though predominant in the younger demographic, the elderly population is also captured within VML injuries. There are many factors that change with aging in skeletal muscle that may further hinder …

Impact Of Sanitizers On Salmonella Enterica Contamination And Microbial Populations Of Poultry Processing Reuse Water, Andrew Micciche Aug 2019

Impact Of Sanitizers On Salmonella Enterica Contamination And Microbial Populations Of Poultry Processing Reuse Water, Andrew Micciche

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As human populations increase in numbers, access to clean, fresh water is becoming increasingly difficult to balance between agricultural and municipal demands. Water scarcity is a limiting factor of food production in many countries, whether they are emerging or established economies. In conventional poultry processing systems, access to water is particularly critical for the maintenance and disinfection of processing areas, as well as in processing operations such as scalding, chilling, and carcass washing. The need for sustainable alternatives to single-use water supplies is becoming increasingly more urgent, and as a result, the implementation of water reuse in poultry processing plants …

Rescue And Reestablishment Of Chicken Models For Spontaneously Occurring Hashimoto’S Thyroiditis And Systemic Sclerosis/Scleroderma, Joseph Zolton Hiltz

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The loss of biodiversity is a topic gaining popularity both in the political and scientific forums. Nearly 30 years ago researchers and politicians congregated in Rio de Janeiro (1992) to attend the first Earth Summit. It was the first meeting of its kind discussing the tangible pressing consequences of biodiversity loss as well as the potential long term ramifications. Many of the countries represented at this summit implemented short and long term plans in order to accurately measure losses of biodiversity as well as establishing organizations to help diagnose and remedy the current problems at hand. These new organizations and …

Tattoo Narratives And Counseling, Danny Lane Mccarty Aug 2019

Tattoo Narratives And Counseling, Danny Lane Mccarty

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Much research has been done on tattoos and on those who acquire them, but most of the research has focused on negative correlations that might exist with people who have tattoos. This current research, however, showed that people’s tattoo narratives can relate to how they view self, others, and the world, and to how they approach life. A narrative approach to qualitative research was used, and ten people participated in the study. Participants’ views of self, others, and the world were discussed as these views emerged from the narratives. Their possible approaches to life were also addressed. Themes that emerged …

Spirit Don't Ever Die: Apocalypse And Denial In An Infinite Universe, Nathan Riggs Aug 2019

Spirit Don't Ever Die: Apocalypse And Denial In An Infinite Universe, Nathan Riggs

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In The Great Derangement, Amitav Ghosh catalogs contemporary fiction’s failure to adequately engage with catastrophic climate change. In this thesis, I argue the engagement problem has a century-old analogue in fiction’s approach to entropy. Entropy was among the first secular apocalyptic modes in mainstream discourse, and this investigation of authors’ approaches to its portrayal provides a model for understanding fiction’s denial or acceptance of apocalypse. I first examine William Hope Hodgson’s 1912 novel The Night Land, a far-future tale set in a post-solar Earth. I contend that Hodgson’s centering of the human experience prevents him from portraying a true end …

Horse Racing During The Civil War: The Perseverance Of The Sport During A Time Of National Crisis, Danael Christian Suttle Aug 2019

Horse Racing During The Civil War: The Perseverance Of The Sport During A Time Of National Crisis, Danael Christian Suttle

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Horse racing has a long and uninterrupted history in the United States. The historiography, however, maintains that horse racing went into hiatus during the Civil War. This simply is not true. While it is true that horse racing saw a decline in the beginning of the war, by the time the war ended, the sport had risen to similar heights as seen before the war. During the war, the sport was enjoyed by both soldiers and civilians. In the army, soldiers would often have impromptu camp races. As the war continued on, camp races became frowned upon by officers. The …
