Emotional Labor And Care Delivery: Interviews With Obstetrical Nurses, Kelly O'Meara Aug 2019

Emotional Labor And Care Delivery: Interviews With Obstetrical Nurses, Kelly O'Meara

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Using a qualitative approach, twenty long-format interviews with registered nurses with experience working in obstetrics (OB RNs) were conducted using a structured, open-ended question guide to investigate occupational culture, the impact of societal forces on work, and the role of emotion in nursing. Audio-recordings of the interviews were analyzed for themes, using grounded theory. Within the culture of OB RNs, the duty of providing safe care was embedded throughout conversations as a duty, a safety imperative. Since OB RNs saw their job in terms of safety foremost, friction arose when others held differing expectations, influenced by medical dominance and the …

Investigating The Removal Of Stormwater Pollutants In Small-Scale, Constructed Treatment Wetlands, Katlyn Edwards Aug 2019

Investigating The Removal Of Stormwater Pollutants In Small-Scale, Constructed Treatment Wetlands, Katlyn Edwards

Rose-Hulman Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships

Eutrophication of US surface waters is a growing problem due to nitrogen and phosphorus runoff in stormwater. In natural ecosystems, wetlands can absorb and remove a variety of water pollutants, including nutrients. Wetlands also provide flood control and wildlife habitat. Mimicking natural systems, constructed treatment wetlands can remove stormwater pollutants, are economic to build and maintain, provide a bionetwork for a wide range of plants and animals, and can be used for educational purposes.

While constructed treatment wetlands can remove stormwater pollutants such as total suspended solids, organic carbon, and nitrates, a significant reduction in phosphate concentrations has not been …

Checkpoint And Cyclooxygenase Inhibition In Microsatellite Stable Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Angela Preda Aug 2019

Checkpoint And Cyclooxygenase Inhibition In Microsatellite Stable Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Angela Preda

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Traditionally, metastatic colorectal cancer has been treated using cytotoxic chemotherapy but the development of immunotherapeutic agents has afforded higher durable remission rates and more tolerable side effect profiles in a small subset of patients. Immunotherapy treatments are currently approved for the treatment of microsatellite instability high subgroup that comprises four percent of metastatic colorectal cancer. However, immunotherapy treatments have little clinical activity in the microsatellite stable subgroup, which encompasses the majority of colorectal cancers. In this phase II trial, we propose to study the efficacy and safety of a three-drug regimen comprised of two immunotherapy treatments, programmed death 1 and …

Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke Aug 2019

Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke

English (MA) Theses

Language acts as either a bridge or a barrier to social groups dependent upon the individual’s effective use of a social group’s language. The individual uses the language of the group in order to join the group and to be understood by the group. This suggests that language is behavioral in part and can be treated as a form of social norms which delegate who is a part of the group and who is not. By utilizing the language of the group effectively, an individual is able to join the group. This group language may be temporary, and the dynamics …

Management Considerations For Palmer Amaranth In A Northern Great Plains Soybean Production System, Brian Vab De Stroet, Sharon Clay Aug 2019

Management Considerations For Palmer Amaranth In A Northern Great Plains Soybean Production System, Brian Vab De Stroet, Sharon Clay

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) was first observed in a South Dakota field in 2015. This study assessed Palmer amaranth growth based on planting date (PD), impact on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield, and response of seedlings of South Dakota biotype seedlings to herbicides with different mechanisms of action (MOA). Soybean yield loss was influenced by Palmer amaranth density in 2016 (p = 0.001), with yield losses of 33% at densities greater than 15 plants m−2 (R2 = 0.65), although yield losses at low densities were greater than predicted by the fitted …

The purpose of this study is to investigate human behavior in emergencies. More specifically, agent-based simulation and social force models were developed to examine the impact of various human and environmental factors on the efficiency of the evacuation process, through a series of case studies. The independent variables of the case studies include the number of exits, the number of passengers, the evacuation policies, and instructions, as well as the queue configuration and wall separators. The results revealed the location of the exits, number of exits, evacuation strategies, and group behaviors all significantly impact the total time of the evacuation. …

Developing A Social Marketing Plan For Direct To Consumer Agricultural Operations, Madelaine Giebler Aug 2019

Developing A Social Marketing Plan For Direct To Consumer Agricultural Operations, Madelaine Giebler

Agricultural Education, Communications and Technology Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the 1980 farm crisis, the agricultural economy has continued to decline with United States farmers receiving less than 16 cents per dollar spent on food (Dunnum, 2017). As a way of combatting decreased profitability, agricultural producers are turning to direct marketing (Rainey, et al., 2011). Direct marketing exists as a social marketing in which producers develop a personal relationship with their customers (Rainey, McGraw, & Popp, 2011; Weinreich, 2011). In order to be successful in social marketing, the audience with which they are trying to reach must be determined as well as the most effective way to meet the …

Sexuality, Esoteric Energies, And The Subtleties Of Transmutation Versus Transformation, Barnaby B. Barratt Aug 2019

Sexuality, Esoteric Energies, And The Subtleties Of Transmutation Versus Transformation, Barnaby B. Barratt

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Transpersonal perspectives on the meaningfulness of being human, and especially the significance of subtle energy teachings, necessitate a rethinking of the notion of sexuality, beyond definitions in terms of sex acts, biological endowments, or perhaps even the complex fantasia of desire. This redefining of the erotic dimension of human life leads both to appreciation of healing as inherently sexual and to understanding how the processes of transmutation by the forces of subtle energies profoundly differ from the transformations that representation of thoughts, feelings, and wishes may undergo. Cognitive access (including that of reflective selfconsciousness) to these forces is inevitably limited …

Ant Diversity Patterns Across Tropical Elevation Gradients: Effects Of Sampling Method And Subcommunity, John T. Longino, Michael G. Branstetter, Philip S. Ward Aug 2019

Ant Diversity Patterns Across Tropical Elevation Gradients: Effects Of Sampling Method And Subcommunity, John T. Longino, Michael G. Branstetter, Philip S. Ward

All PIRU Publications

Local diversity may be influenced by niche assembly processes involving competition for limited resources, or by niche conservatism and the length of time clades have had to diversify. Mid‐elevation peaks in ant diversity on wet forest elevational gradients are most consistent with niche conservatism effects. However, it is possible that subsets of the ant community vary in the degree to which niche assembly processes are important, and this may be revealed by sampling methods that bias toward particular subsets. A previous study of ant‐elevation patterns in Middle American wet forest relied on Winkler sampling, a method that samples much of …

When I Die Bury Me In This: An Arts-Based Research On Human Death, Decomposition, And Body Disposition Methods And The Taphonomy Metaphor Of Our Personal Belongings, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson Aug 2019

When I Die Bury Me In This: An Arts-Based Research On Human Death, Decomposition, And Body Disposition Methods And The Taphonomy Metaphor Of Our Personal Belongings, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson

Action Research Projects

This arts-based research project explores the connection between our deaths and what happens to our personal belongings. I researched body disposition methods and intertwined those concepts with objects found in unlikely places like auctions and the side of the highway into my art practice. Utilizing the a/r/tography methodology, I focused on the spaces between and embracing the rhizomatic connections that appeared through what ultimately was a very personal journey. I collected a variety of data using taphonomy as a metaphor for our personal belongings and as a conceptual framework. Methods of data collection including mind maps, informal surveys, visual journals, …

What A Choice-Based Classroom Teaches Students, Kathryn Beth Potter

Action Research Projects

This study is about the choice-based classroom philosophy of Teaching for Artistic Behavior. It investigates the outcomes for students in light of the cognitive possibilities of Elliot Eisner and Nel Noddings’ theme of care. I utilized the method of education criticism in order to gather observations from my own TAB classroom in combination with reflections on the development of strategies and structures within the classroom. Observations of student actions and conversations provided data that were evaluated to find evidence of Eisner and Noddings’ possible outcome. The data revealed that in a structured environment student choice was able to help students …

Objects As Heirlooms: An A/R/Tography Experience, Samantha Renee Disney-Saxton

Action Research Projects

This arts-based research project is an autoethnography exploring the idea of heirlooms and what elevates an object to be classified as an heirloom. As the a/r/tographer in this investigation I explored what others viewed as heirlooms through reading, surveying, and interviewing. I then considered the objects that I identify as heirlooms. I made artwork throughout this inquiry which began as a reflection upon my personal heirlooms. Starting out as identifying what qualifies an object as an heirloom turned into the creation of potential heirlooms for my own family through a melding of various mediums. Our stories and memories surrounding an …

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King Aug 2019

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King

Stray and Feral Animal Populations Collection

Some conservationists believe that free-ranging cats pose an enormous risk to biodiversity and public health and therefore should be eliminated from the landscape by any means necessary. They further claim that those who question the science or ethics behind their arguments are science deniers (merchants of doubt) seeking to mislead the public. As much as we share a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and wild nature, we believe these ideas are wrong and fuel an unwarranted moral panic over cats. Those who question the ecological or epidemiological status of cats are not science deniers, and it is a false analogy …

Meox2 Haploinsufficiency Accelerates Axonal Degeneration In Dba/2j Glaucoma, Rebecca A Buchanan, Kate E Foley, Keating W Pepper, Alaina M Reagan, Kelly J Keezer, Amanda A Hewes, Cory A Diemler, Christoph Preuss, Ileana Soto Reyes, Simon W M John, Gareth R Howell

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Purpose: Glaucoma is a complex disease with major risk factors including advancing age and increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Dissecting these earliest events will likely identify new avenues for therapeutics. Previously, we performed transcriptional profiling in DBA/2J (D2) mice, a widely used mouse model relevant to glaucoma. Here, we use these data to identify and test regulators of early gene expression changes in DBA/2J glaucoma.

Methods: Upstream regulator analysis (URA) in Ingenuity Pathway Analysis was performed to identify potential master regulators of differentially expressed genes. The function of one putative regulator, mesenchyme homeobox 2 (Meox2), was tested using a combination of …

Heavy Metal-Induced Oxidative Stress On Seed Germination And Seedling Development: A Critical Review, Mihiri Seneviratne, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Muhammad Rizwan, H. M. S. P. Madawala, Yong Sik Ok, Meththika Vithanage Aug 2019

Heavy Metal-Induced Oxidative Stress On Seed Germination And Seedling Development: A Critical Review, Mihiri Seneviratne, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Muhammad Rizwan, H. M. S. P. Madawala, Yong Sik Ok, Meththika Vithanage

Biological Sciences

Heavy metal contamination in soils can influence plants and animals, often leading to toxicosis. Heavy metals can impact various biochemical processes in plants, including enzyme and antioxidant production, protein mobilization and photosynthesis. Hydrolyzing enzymes play a major role in seed germination. Enzymes such as acid phosphatases, proteases and α-amylases are known to facilitate both seed germination and seedling growth via mobilizing nutrients in the endosperm. In the presence of heavy metals, starch is immobilized and nutrient sources become limited. Moreover, a reduction in proteolytic enzyme activity and an increase in protein and amino acid content can be observed under heavy …

Expression And Function Of Nesfatin-1 Are Altered By Stage Of The Estrous Cycle, Alicia T. Pate, Abigayle L. Schnell, Teresa A. Ennis, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten Aug 2019

Expression And Function Of Nesfatin-1 Are Altered By Stage Of The Estrous Cycle, Alicia T. Pate, Abigayle L. Schnell, Teresa A. Ennis, Willis K. Samson, Gina L.C. Yosten

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nesfatin-1 is a peptide derived from the nucleo-bindin 2 (Nucb2) precursor protein that has been shown to exert potent effects on appetite and cardiovascular function in male animals. Sex hormones modulate the expression of Nucb2 in several species, including goldfish, mouse, and rat, and human studies have revealed differential expression based on male or female sex. We therefore hypothesized that the ability of nesfatin-1 to increase mean arterial pressure (MAP) would be influenced by stage of the estrous cycle. Indeed, we found that in cycling female Sprague-Dawley rats, nesfa-tin-1 induced an increase in MAP on diestrus, when both estrogen and …

Old Ephraim Booklet: The Legendary Grizzly Of The Bear River Range, Alyson Griggs, Clint Pumphrey, Shay Larsen Aug 2019

Old Ephraim Booklet: The Legendary Grizzly Of The Bear River Range, Alyson Griggs, Clint Pumphrey, Shay Larsen

Old Ephraim Exhibit

The story of Old Ephraim has circulated since the early twentieth century, when the legendary grizzly preyed upon sheep grazing in the Bear River Range. Frustrated herders, hoping to limit losses to their flocks, pursued the elusive bear, but he remained largely unseen and unheard for many years. The only trace of Old Ephraim was his distinctive tracks, which exhibited only three toes on one foot—hence the nickname, “Old Three Toes.” In August 1922, after attempting for more than nine years, sheepherder Frank Clark finally trapped and killed Old Ephraim.

Nearly a century later, the story of Old Ephraim has …

Natural Autoantibodies: Origin, Function And Utility For Diagnosis Of Disease, Abhirup Sarkar Aug 2019

Natural Autoantibodies: Origin, Function And Utility For Diagnosis Of Disease, Abhirup Sarkar

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Autoantibodies (aAbs) by the simplest definitions have been described as antibodies against self-antigens and were exclusively associated with autoimmune diseases. Eventually, studies demonstrated that they are abundant in the blood of all human sera, regardless of age, gender, or the presence or absence of disease, and were thus named as ‘natural autoantibodies’. The underlying reason for their ubiquity has remained elusive, but we have hypothesized that they are responsible for clearing blood-borne cell and tissue debris generated under conditions of health and disease. To test this, we chose to use two widely different disease model systems, namely neurodegenerative diseases and …

The Development Of Thad Jones’ Arranging/Scoring Style: A Comparative Study Of Six Works For Large Jazz Ensemble, Chang Su Aug 2019

The Development Of Thad Jones’ Arranging/Scoring Style: A Comparative Study Of Six Works For Large Jazz Ensemble, Chang Su

Dissertations

This dissertation examined and compared six pieces for large jazz ensemble composed and arranged by Thad Jones. The analyses focused on Jones’ arranging and scoring techniques developed through three distinct periods of his career. In Jones’ early period, his arranging style showed influences from the Count Basie Orchestra as evidenced in blues vocabulary, call-and-response between saxophones and brass, and the form and structure of the arrangements. In his middle period, he explored symphonic sounds, suite-like forms, and elements from rock-jazz and funk-jazz music. In his late period, a more comprehensive development of tension and release guided his arranging. The vacancy …
