Thwarting Repair: Gutter, Stutter, Are You My Mother?, Chase Gregory

Faculty Journal Articles

Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama (2012) presents an interesting challenge to literary critics: as an object that extensively theorizes itself, it leaves little room for interpretation beyond its surface-level claims. This article reads against the grain of Are You My Mother? ’s own analysis in order to make room for readings that resist taking the text at its word. Although Are You My Mother? proclaims loyalty to the psychoanalytic theories of Donald Winnicott, Bechdel employs the metaphor of the mirror and the formal qualities of comics to complicate the reductive assertions of her avatar’s …

Opposite Sides Of The Same Coin: Worker Classification In The New Economy, Griffin Toronjo Pivateau Sep 2019

Opposite Sides Of The Same Coin: Worker Classification In The New Economy, Griffin Toronjo Pivateau

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Massive changes have disrupted the institution of employment. The growth of the service sector, technological advancements, and developments in the finance market have created a demand for new employment models. Employers have responded by increasingly utilizing independent contractors to fill positions traditionally held by employees.

Designating a worker as either "employee" or "independent contractor" determines the degree to which employment law applies to the worker. An independent contractor falls outside many of the benefits and protections that the law provides employees. Currently, courts, states, and administrative agencies use a confusing array of employment tests, created for different purposes and different …

The Effects Of Therapeutic Riding On Social Skills And Sensory Functioning In Children With Autism, Betsy Donahoe-Fillmore, Mary Insana Fisher, Christy Lee, Jordan Bevins, Cristin Carter, Stephanie Dailey, Kelsey Haynes, Allison Richard, Sarah Soboslay

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Purpose and Significance: Therapeutic riding (TR) is equine-assisted riding lessons that are adapted for people with a wide variety of impairments and is often used as an adjunct to traditional therapies. Previous research has shown that TR helped to improve sensory functioning, cognition and social skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but sessions have typically been for 10-12 weeks. The purpose of this study was to investigate if social skills and sensory functioning improved after only 8 weeks of TR.

Subjects: Children were recruited from a local TR center. Participants included seven children (5M, 2F) with a diagnosis …

Water Entry Impact Dynamics Of Diving Birds, Saburel I. Sharker, Sean Holekamp, Mohammad M. Mansoor, Tadd T. Truscott

Biology Faculty Publications

Some seabirds (such as northern gannets and brown boobies) can dive from heights as high as 30 m reaching speeds of up to 24 m s−1 as they impact the water surface. The physical geometry of plunge diving birds, particularly of the beak, allows them to limit high impact forces compared to non-diving birds. Numerically simulated data for one species (northern gannet) provides some insight into the impact forces experienced during diving, however, no reliable experimental data with real bird geometries exist for comparison purposes. This study utilizes eleven 3D printed diving bird models of three types of birds: plunge-diving …

Fashion Brand Love: Application Of A Cognition–Affect–Conation Model, Tae-Im Han, Dooyoung Choi Sep 2019

Fashion Brand Love: Application Of A Cognition–Affect–Conation Model, Tae-Im Han, Dooyoung Choi

STEMPS Faculty Publications

A large numbers of studies have supported the crucial role of brand love in consumer–brand relationships; however, research that examines fashion brand love and its relationship with cognitive aspects and self-concept congruency remains limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify important factors that are associated with fashion brand love. A questionnaire in which participants provided self-reported responses was created to measure the constructs and structural equation modeling (SEM) and independent sample t-tests were conducted to test the hypothesized relationships. Our results indicated that consumers who know more about fashion brands are more likely to have stronger emotional …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Compromise in inspiratory breathing following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by damage to descending bulbospinal axons originating in the rostral ventral respiratory group (rVRG) and consequent denervation and silencing of phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs) that directly control diaphragm activation. In a rat model of high-cervical hemisection SCI, we performed systemic administration of an antagonist peptide directed against phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a central inhibitor of neuron-intrinsic axon growth potential. PTEN antagonist peptide (PAP4) robustly restored diaphragm function, as determined with electromyography (EMG) recordings in living SCI animals. PAP4 promoted substantial, long-distance regeneration of injured rVRG axons through …

These new outcomes of modern medicine can be achieved through adopting the strategies that enhance wellness of patient. The methods of enhancing wellness are in practice since centuries and their effectiveness has been handed down through word of mouth and tradition. They continue to evolve and were first documented in 1970s, by Canyon Ranch1, as a strategy to improve health through the principles of a healthy lifestyle. …

Better Together: Improving Food Security And Nutrition By Linking Market And Food Systems, Martha Cruz Zuinga, Monty L. Lynn, Elly Kaganzi Mwesigwa, Dan Norell, Vidhya Sriram, Emmanuel Tumusiime Sep 2019

Better Together: Improving Food Security And Nutrition By Linking Market And Food Systems, Martha Cruz Zuinga, Monty L. Lynn, Elly Kaganzi Mwesigwa, Dan Norell, Vidhya Sriram, Emmanuel Tumusiime

Management Sciences

Market-based approaches to food security often increase agricultural productivity and income yet sometimes fail to enhance nutrition. When food security programming combines market and food systems with a specific focus on women and girls, economic and nutrition outcomes benefit. We identify distinctive and shared elements from market and food systems and highlight how they enhance nutrition outcomes when they are combined. We describe food security programming by CARE and World Vision in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, demonstrating nutrition gains in food insecure households.

What, When And For Whom Model Of Nutrition: A Health Management Approach, Muhammad Rafiq

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Studies have shown that nutrition plays an important role in the pathophysiology of different health issues either physiological, or psychological. Nutrition is implicated in the development of health issues in different ways. The purpose of this mini review was to suggest a comprehensive model of nutrition, “What, When and for Whom Model of Nutrition”, in the light of existing literature. For this purpose, existing literature was explored to study the role of nutrition on mental health in perspective to, what type of nutrition, when it is consumed and/or who consumes it. Researchers concluded that it is not only what we …

The Role Of Autophagy In Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury In Isolated Rat Hearts, Aloysius C. Ibe Ii Sep 2019

The Role Of Autophagy In Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury In Isolated Rat Hearts, Aloysius C. Ibe Ii

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Autophagy is a housekeeping process used to remove damaged cytoplasmic constituents and protein aggregates. However, a debate persists on whether autophagy is beneficial or detrimental when an ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) insult occurs in the heart. This study tested the effects of autophagy enhancers (rapamycin and trehalose) and an autophagy inhibitor (3-methyladenine) on cardiac function and infarct size after global ischemia (30 minutes) and reperfusion (45 minutes) when given prior to ischemia (pre-treatment) or at the beginning of reperfusion (post-treatment). Rapamycin (25nM) pre-treatment and post-treatment significantly restored final left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) to 75.4±9.1% and 60±5% of initial baseline respectively (both …

Detection And Concentration Of Plasma Aflatoxin Is Associated With Detection Of Oncogenic Human Papillomavirus In Kenyan Women, Jianjun Zhang, Elkanah Omenge, Philip Tonui, Yan Tong, Titus Manai, Stephen Kiptoo, Kapten Muthoka, John Groopman, Joshua Smith, Erin Madeen

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Cervical cancer is common in Kenyan women. Cofactors in addition to infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) are likely to be important in causing cervical cancer, because only a small percentage of HPV-infected women will develop this malignancy. Kenyan women are exposed to dietary aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen and immunosuppressive agent, which may be such a cofactor.

Methods: Demographics, behavioral data, plasma, and cervical swabs were collected from 88 human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected Kenyan women without cervical dysplasia. Human papillomavirus detection was compared between women with or without plasma aflatoxin B1-lysine (AFB1-lys) and evaluated in relation to AFB1-lys concentration.

Strangers In The Village: James Baldwin, Teju Cole, And Glenn Ligon, Monika Gehlawat Sep 2019

Strangers In The Village: James Baldwin, Teju Cole, And Glenn Ligon, Monika Gehlawat

Faculty Publications

This essay uses Edward Said’s theory of affiliation to consider the relationship between James Baldwin and contemporary artists Teju Cole and Glenn Ligon, both of whom explicitly engage with their predecessor’s writing in their own work. Specifically, Baldwin’s essay “Stranger in the Village” (1953) serves a through-line for this discussion, as it is invoked in Cole’s essay “Black Body” and Ligon’s visual series, also titled Stranger in the Village. In juxtaposing these three artists, I argue that they express the dialectical energy of affiliation by articulating ongoing concerns of race relations in America while distinguishing themselves from Baldwin in terms …

America’S Favorite Antidote: Drug-Induced Homicide In The Age Of The Overdose Crisis, Leo Beletsky Sep 2019

America’S Favorite Antidote: Drug-Induced Homicide In The Age Of The Overdose Crisis, Leo Beletsky

Utah Law Review

Nearing the end of its second decade, the overdose crisis in the United States continues to claim tens of thousands of lives. Despite the rhetorical emphasis on a “public health” approach, criminal law and its enforcement continue to play a central role among policy responses to this crisis. A legacy of the 1980s War on Drugs, statutory provisions that implicate drug distributors in overdose fatalities are on the books in many U.S. jurisdictions and federally. This Article articulates an interdisciplinary critique of these “drug-induced homicide” laws at a time of their increased popularity, expanding scope, and aggressive prosecution. That these …

Illegal Substance Abuse And Protection From Discrimination In Housing And Employment: Reversing The Exclusion Of Illegal Substance Abuse As A Disability, Leslie P. Francis Sep 2019

Illegal Substance Abuse And Protection From Discrimination In Housing And Employment: Reversing The Exclusion Of Illegal Substance Abuse As A Disability, Leslie P. Francis

Utah Law Review

When landlords or employers know that someone is using opioids, either legally or illegally, the consequences can be significant. Rental housing or employment are both critical to well-being, yet may be at particularly high risk. As this Article argues below, legal protections in these areas are inadequate. To summarize the argument briefly, a crucial legal problem for people suffering from substance abuse disorders is that current illegal use of controlled substances is excluded from the definition of disability in federal anti-discrimination statutes. A history of substance abuse is a disability protected from discrimination, but recent relapses vitiate this protection. Relatedly, …

A Review On Animal-Based Homoeopathic Drugs And Their Applications In Biomedicine, Bibaswan Biswas, Sundaram E, Shyaga Jhansi, Satish Patel, Anil Khurana, Raj Manchanda

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy is one of the most well-practiced medical systems in the world. In Homoeopathy, like all other natural sources, animal and their secretions have been widely used. However, unlike other natural sources of homoeopathic drugs, for example, plants and chemicals, the collection and preparation of animal-based drugs are extremely challenging, especially for drugs from exotic animals. Considering the challenges, we envision that a review regarding the animal-based therapeutics, used in Homoeopathy, may be useful. Our review, consistently has found that the discoveries of the modern biomedicine agree with the reports from the homoeopathic literature. In many cases, the recent biomedical …

Information Resources For Animal Control And Wildlife Damage Management, Stephen M. Vantassel, Michael W. Fall, Serge Lariviére Sep 2019

Information Resources For Animal Control And Wildlife Damage Management, Stephen M. Vantassel, Michael W. Fall, Serge Lariviére

Wildlife Damage Management Technical Series

A bumper sticker reads, “If you think education is expensive, you oughta try ignorance.” That statement could not be truer in regard to wildlife damage management. Being willing to learn is a critical attitude for everyone involved in wildlife damage management. Since wildlife damage management intersects so many other disciplines, no single person can be an expert in all of them. In addition, the arrival of an invasive species, changes in building practices (e.g., egress windows, ridge vents), or the implementation of new regulations can confound traditional practices and require new control methods. Thus, it is important to provide a …

Manual Movement In Sign Languages: One Hand Versus Two In Communicating Shapes, C. Ferrara, Donna Jo Napoli Sep 2019

Manual Movement In Sign Languages: One Hand Versus Two In Communicating Shapes, C. Ferrara, Donna Jo Napoli

Linguistics Faculty Works

In sign languages, the task of communicating a shape involves drawing in the air with one moving hand (Method One) or two (Method Two). Since the movement path is iconic, method choice might be based on the shape. In the present studies we aimed to determine whether geometric properties motivate method choice. In a study of 17 deaf signers from six countries, the strongest predictors of method choice were whether the shape has any curved edges (Method One), and whether the shape is symmetrical across the Y‐axis (Method Two), where the default was Method One. In a second study of …

Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2018/2019, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Sep 2019

Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2018/2019, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

There were four key areas in which the Council focused during the year:

  • the attributes required by a biosecurity 'combat' agency to effectively sustain a biosecurity response
  • funding for biosecurity research and development in WA
  • border biosecurity; and
  • WA's preparedness for myrtle rust

Developing constructive advice to Government requires a comprehensive understanding of the needs and challenges of industry, Government and the community. It also requires an understanding of how changes to the biosecurity system might impact these groups and affect WA's biosecurity status. During 2018/19 the Council continued to monitor biosecurity-related developments at national and State levels; provided feedback …
