Ship Breaking And Its Future In Bangladesh, Jewel Das, Muhammed Ali Shahin Oct 2019

Ship Breaking And Its Future In Bangladesh, Jewel Das, Muhammed Ali Shahin

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Ship breaking is comparatively a sustainable business, particularly in the developing world, but the conditions where it is practiced is non-sustainable. Ship breaking is the process of dismantling ships and selling their parts - primarily the steel - for scrap. The main impetus for breaking a ship down is that maintenance costs go up as a ship ages. Shipping companies also have to pay port charges, crew salaries and oil fees for their ships, so when they are no longer economically viable they are sold to ship recyclers who strip the old ships down, salvaging anything of value. Bangladesh is …

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Blue Economy is related to economic growth through the sustainable utilization of ocean resources with technological inputs to improve livelihoods. Economically important coastal and marine resources are the main components of the Blue Economy for Bangladesh. These resources are categorized into living, non-living, renewable resources and trade and commerce. As Bangladesh is vulnerable to climate change, related extreme events are making the coastal and marine resources vulnerable which may hamper the smooth Blue Economy development in Bangladesh. Climate change extreme events include warming trend, cyclone, sea level rise, droughts, erosion, tidal surge, saline water intrusion, flood, change in precipitation trend …

Naval War College Review

“History, Truth Decay, and the Naval Profession”

Why in this age of constant technological, economic, social, and political change should navies actively concern themselves with the naval past? Herein I will try to answer this question, one often asked by skeptics anxious to insert into the developing courses of professional military education (PME) material that seems so much more relevant to the contemporary problems they face.

United States National Park Service: Publications

Understanding the spatial ecology of highly mobile marine vertebrates is necessary for informing conservation and management strategies aimed at protecting such species. Buck Island Reef National Monument (BIRNM), off the coast of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, harbors critical foraging habitat for Critically Endangered juvenile hawksbills Eretmochelys imbricata that exhibit high site fidelity until sexual maturation. Using an array of fixed passive acoustic receivers that covered over 20.2 km2 at its largest configuration and in-water biannual sampling, we analyzed residency patterns and habitat use of 29 hawksbills. High recapture rates allowed for long- term data collection for some individuals, with …

Should All Stakeholders Be Treated Fairly? Identifying Stakeholders That Legitimately Matter, Desmond Ng Oct 2019

Should All Stakeholders Be Treated Fairly? Identifying Stakeholders That Legitimately Matter, Desmond Ng

Organization Management Journal

A key contribution of stakeholder research is that a firm’s purpose and objective is influenced by those stakeholders who have a legitimate stake in a firm’s business activities. Yet, identifying those that have a legitimate stake remains a challenge in stakeholder research. This research draws on legitimacy arguments to explain how stakeholders develop accountability and reliability in their legal and moral claims and how legitimacy influences a firm-manager’s obligations of fairness to these stakeholder groups. A concept of directness, consisting of close and relational specific exchanges, is introduced to explain this legitimation process. Directness offers accountability and reliability when an …

Retinoid X Receptor (RXR) is a nuclear receptor with important roles in cell death, development, and metabolism. However, little is known about its role in EO. In this study, the agonist SR11237 was used to evaluate RXR activation in EO. Rats given SR11237 from post-natal day 5 to post-natal day 15 were harvested for micro-computed tomography (microCT) scanning and histology. In parallel, newborn CD1 mouse tibiae were cultured with increasing concentrations of SR11237 for histological and whole-mount evaluation. …

Microliths In The South Asian Rainforest ~45-4 Ka: New Insights From Fa-Hien Lena Cave, Sri Lanka, Oshan Wedage, Andrea Picin, James Blinkhorn

KIP Articles

Microliths–small, retouched, often-backed stone tools–are often interpreted to be the product of composite tools, including projectile weapons, and efficient hunting strategies by modern humans. In Europe and Africa these lithic toolkits are linked to hunting of medium- and large-sized game found in grassland or woodland settings, or as adaptations to risky environments during periods of climatic change. Here, we report on a recently excavated lithic assemblage from the Late Pleistocene cave site of Fa-Hien Lena in the tropical evergreen rainforest of Sri Lanka. Our analyses demonstrate that Fa-Hien Lena represents the earliest microlith assemblage in South Asia (c. 48,000–45,000 cal. …

Mite Load Predicts The Quality Of Sexual Color And Locomotor Performance In A Sexually Dichromatic Lizard, Richard W. Orton, Chase T. Kinsey, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Biology: Faculty Publications

Since Darwin, the maintenance of bright sexual colors has recurrently been linked to mate preference. However, the mechanisms underpinning such preferences for bright colors would not be resolved for another century. Likely, the idea of selection for colors that could decrease the chances of survival (e.g., flashy colors that can inadvertently attract predators) was perceived as counterintuitive. It is now widely accepted that these extreme colors often communicate to mates the ability to survive despite a “handicap” and act as honest signals of individual quality when they are correlated with the quality of other traits that are directly linked to …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Importance: Evidence shows that sleep dysfunction and β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition work synergistically to impair brain function in individuals with normal cognition, increasing the risk of developing dementia later in life. However, whether Aβ continues to play an integral role in sleep dysfunction after the onset of cognitive decline in individuals with dementia is unclear.

Objective: To determine whether Aβ deposition in the brain is associated with subjective measures of sleep quality and cognition in elderly individuals with cognitive disorders.

Design, Setting, and Participants: A nested survey study was conducted at the Cognitive Disorders and Comprehensive Alzheimer Disease Center of Thomas …

Imperatrix, Domina, Rex: Conceptualizing The Female King In Twelfth-Century England, Coral Lumbley

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

This article draws on methods from transgender theory, historicist literary studies, and visual analysis of medieval sealing practices to show that Empress Matilda of England was controversially styled as a female king during her career in the early to mid twelfth century. While the chronicle Gesta Stephani castigates Matilda’s failure to engage in sanctioned gendered behaviors as she waged civil war to claim her inherited throne, Matilda’s seal harnesses both masculine and feminine signifiers in order to proclaim herself both king and queen. While Matilda’s transgressive gender position was targeted by her detractors during her lifetime, the obstinately transgender object …

“Car Vallés Sui Et Nient Mescine”: Trans Heroism And Literary Masculinity In Le Roman De Silence, Caitlin G. Watt

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The title character of Heldris de Cornüalle’s thirteenth-century Le Roman de Silence, raised as a boy because of a ban on female inheritance, achieves acclaim as a knight and minstrel before ultimately being relegated to a traditional feminine role when the deception is revealed and the knight becomes a queen. Although the text has offered prompted many fruitful analyses of its depiction of womanhood and women’s potential by scholars reading Silence as a cross-dressing woman, reading Silence instead as a transmasculine figure may offer new perspectives on Silence’s treatment of gender. This article explores the possibility of Silence …

Plant-Produced Oxidation/Reduction Enzymes As Bioremediation Agents, Joshua Byrd Oct 2019

Plant-Produced Oxidation/Reduction Enzymes As Bioremediation Agents, Joshua Byrd

Student Theses and Dissertations

Contamination of the environment directly impacts animal, plant, and human health and agricultural production. A potential solution this project is offering incorporates the use of enzymes from fungi; manganese peroxidase and laccase. Two formulations of recombinant manganese peroxidase (MnP) from corn and commercial laccase have been tested on synthetic dyes and atrazine in an aqueous environment. Laccase utilizes oxygen when degrading these pollutants. All dyes were degraded to some extent by both enzymes. The products from the enzymatic reactions of one dye, Methyl Orange were analyzed with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC showed that there were products of …

Automation Of Karl Fischer Titration For Animal Pharmaceutical Product Testing At Elanco Animal Health, Elizabeth L. Grubbs

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Ever wonder what doing research looks like in the context of working in industry? This summer I had the opportunity to work at Elanco Animal Health, the world’s third largest animal pharmaceutical company (and growing!) I worked in the Quality Control laboratories where products are tested before they are sent out the door. I did research to automate a process that checks for the water content of various animal health products. The water content of these products is important for many reasons including expiration dates and FDA requirements. The process that I automated is called Karl Fischer titration and is …
