Spread Of Domestic Animals Across Neolithic Western Anatolia: New Stable Isotope Evidence From Ugurlu Höyük, The Island Of Gökçeada, Turkey, Suzanne E. Pilaar Birch, Levent Atici, Burcin Erdogu
Anthropology Faculty Research
The origins of agriculture in Southwest Asia over 10,000 years ago and its subsequent spread into Europe during the Neolithic have been the focus of much archaeological research over the past several decades. Increasingly more sophisticated analytical techniques have allowed for better understanding of the complex interactions that occurred amongst humans, animals, and their environments during this transition. The Aegean Islands are critically situated where Anatolia and the mainland Greece meet, making the region pivotal for understanding the movement of the Neolithic into Europe. Located on the largest Turkish Aegean island of Gökçeada, the site of Uğurlu Höyük dates to …

Dose Effects Of Recombinant Adenovirus Immunization In Rodents, Eric A. Weaver
Dose Effects Of Recombinant Adenovirus Immunization In Rodents, Eric A. Weaver
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Recombinant adenovirus type 5 (rAd) has been used as a vaccine platform against many infectious diseases and has been shown to be an effective vaccine vector. The dose of the vaccine varies significantly from study to study, making it very diffcult to compare immune responses and vaccine effcacy. This study determined the immune correlates induced by serial dilutions of rAd vaccines delivered intramuscularly (IM) and intranasally (IN) to mice and rats. When immunized IM, mice had substantially higher antibody responses at the higher vaccine doses, whereas, the IN immunized mice showed a lower response to the higher rAd vaccine doses. …

Desertification is a global phenomenon caused by various processes, including climate change, vegetation processes, and human activities. The need to combat desertification is increasing in many countries. A reasonable assessment of the vulnerability or sensitivity of land cover to desertification at national scales is crucial to formulate appropriate strategies or policies for combating it. The main purpose of this work was to quantitatively assess the sensitivity of land cover to desertification in Mongolia using the MEDALUS approach. The MEDALUS method is a widely known technique for assessing desertification in the Mediterranean area. In this study, the method was adjusted to …
The Energetic Cost Of Anthropogenic Disturbance On The Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra Lutris Nereis), Heather Elizabeth Barrett
The Energetic Cost Of Anthropogenic Disturbance On The Southern Sea Otter (Enhydra Lutris Nereis), Heather Elizabeth Barrett
Master's Theses
With increased human populations and tourism in coastal areas, there is greater potential for disturbance of marine wildlife. Having high metabolic rates, sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) are at risk of increased energetic costs due to disturbance. To investigate these effects, sea otter activity in response to potential disturbance stimuli was recorded over three years, at three California locations: Monterey, Moss Landing, and Morro Bay. A hidden Markov Model was developed to examine how activity varies as a function of location, group size, pup to adult ratio, kelp canopy, and occurrence of and proximity to disturbance stimuli. Results were combined …
Children's Books As Cultural Products: A Qualitative Study Of Cultural Representation In Hmong And Non-Hmong American Books, Malina Her
Master's Theses
This study examined the type of cultural practices and values depicted within Hmong American children’s books in comparison to non-Hmong American children’s books from the United States. The purpose was to explore if prior Hmong traditional practices and values reflective of American individualism would extend to Hmong children’s books. Thirty best-seller children’s books were coded using two checklists, one focused on Hmong traditional practices and the other on American values. Results showed that Hmong traditional practices underscored by Hmong adolescents in prior research somewhat extended to Hmong children’s books. Moreover, in some respects Hmong children’s books displayed similar numbers of …
Effect Of Nicotine Exposure On Fatigue Mechanics Of Murine Arteries, Elizabeth Ho
Effect Of Nicotine Exposure On Fatigue Mechanics Of Murine Arteries, Elizabeth Ho
Master's Theses
Nicotine is an addictive substance found in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and cigarettes, and the use of such products has growing concern because of the prevalent use by young adults. Nicotine exposure degrades arterial tissue and results in increased arterial stiffness, which is linked to cardiovascular events, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. The hypothesis of this research is that fatigue loading reveals changes to the mechanical behavior of nicotine-treated arteries that is more informatively discriminating than stiffness alone. Ten murine arteries, five untreated and five nicotine-treated, were subjected to cyclic fatigue loading in an open-circumferential configuration by a custom tensometer …

Optimising Traffic Flow At A Signalised Intersection Using Simulation, Muhammad Rozi Malim, Sherey Sufreney Abd Rahman, Faridah Abdul Halim
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Traffic signal lights system is a signalling device located at an intersection or pedestrian crossing to control the movement of traffic. The timing of traffic signal lights has attracted many researchers to study the problems involving traffic light management and looking for an inexpensive and effective solution that requires inexpensive changes in the infrastructures. A simple traffic lights system uses a pre-timed control setting based on the latest traffic data, and the setting could be manually changed. It is a common type of signal control and sometimes the setting was not correctly configured with the traffic data, thus leading to …
Development Of Spatiotemporal Congestion Pattern Observation Model Using Historical And Near Real Time Data, Betty Kretlow
Development Of Spatiotemporal Congestion Pattern Observation Model Using Historical And Near Real Time Data, Betty Kretlow
Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
Traffic congestion is not foreign to major metropolitan areas. Congestion in large cities often is associated with dense land developments and continued economic growth. In general, congestion can be classified into two categories: recurring and nonrecurring. Recurring congestion often occurs at certain parts of highway networks, referred to as bottleneck locations. Nonrecurring congestion, on the other hand, can be caused by different reasons, including work zones, special events, accidents, inclement weather, poor signal timing, etc. The work presented here demonstrates an approach to effectively identifying spatiotemporal patterns of traffic congestion at a network level. The Metro Atlanta highway network was …

Phenotypically Plastic Responses To Predation Risk Are Temperature Dependent, Thomas M. Luhring, Janna M. Vavra, Clayton E. Cressler, John Delong
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Predicting how organisms respond to climate change requires that we understand the temperature dependence of fitness in relevant ecological contexts (e.g., with or without predation risk). Predation risk often induces changes to life history traits that are themselves temperature dependent. We explore how perceived predation risk and temperature interact to determine fitness (indicated by the intrinsic rate of increase, r) through changes to its underlying components (net reproductive rate, generation time, and survival) in Daphnia magna. We exposed Daphnia to predation cues from dragonfly naiads early, late, or throughout their ontogeny. Predation risk increased r differentially across temperatures …

Effect Of A Novel Thermal Treatment On Rough Titanium Implant Surfaces – "In Vitro" Evaluation, Rahil Douweihy, Carole Chakar, Georges Hilal, Zeina Al Majzoub
International Arab Journal of Dentistry
Current trends in modern biomedical research target the development of dental implant surfaces that are more biocompatible, and highly osteoconductive/ osteoinductive to achieve faster osseointegration and stronger bone-to-implant interface, especially under poor local and systemic clinical conditions. Heat treatment has been suggested to alter surface characteristics and result in improved biological response. The objectives of the present in vitro study are to evaluate the impact of a novel heat treatment method of rough titanium implants on cell viability, cell proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activity. Six groups of grade 4 commercially pure titanium (Ti) discs measuring 6 mm in diameter and …

Regulation Of The Microtubule Cytoskeleton And Cell Wall Development In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Christy J. Fornero
Regulation Of The Microtubule Cytoskeleton And Cell Wall Development In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Christy J. Fornero
Theses and Dissertations
Regulation of the cortical microtubule cytoskeleton is critical for organized plant cell division. Arabidopsis ton1 and ton2 mutants display random cell division plane placement and lack the plant-specific cortical microtubule array that encircles the nucleus prior to mitosis. In wild type plants, this preprophase band (PPB) of cortical microtubules precisely marks the future division plane. The specific roles of TON1 and TON2 in PPB formation are not yet known. It is suspected that TON1 Recruiting Motif (TRM) proteins may be involved in TON1 and TON2 recruitment to the PPB. Here we describe results for the targeted disruption of a group …

Mesoscale Controls On The Shasta County Convergence Zone, Matthew Thomas Roberts
Mesoscale Controls On The Shasta County Convergence Zone, Matthew Thomas Roberts
Master's Theses
The Shasta County Convergence Zone (SCCZ) is a poorly understood terrain-forced convergence zone that develops at the northern terminus of California’s Sacramento Valley during cool season (Oct.-Apr.) trough passages. While terrain-flow interactions clearly factor into the SCCZ development, the nature of these interactions is unknown as are the mesoscale processes affecting event duration and orientation. Level-II NEXRAD radar data are used to examine the onset, duration, orientation, geographical extent, and precipitation rate of 23 SCCZ events during the 2016-2017 cool season. The analyses reveal distinct event morphologies including (1) isolated convective bands over the topography, (2) isolated convective bands displaced …
A Phonetic Distance Approach To Intelligibility Between Mam Regional Dialects, Megan Simon
A Phonetic Distance Approach To Intelligibility Between Mam Regional Dialects, Megan Simon
Master's Theses
Mam, an indigenous Mayan language spoken primarily in Guatemala, has considerable internal diversity among its regional dialects. The purpose of this thesis is to estimate their varying degrees of intelligibility and to present groups of dialects whose speakers can be reasonably expected to understand one another. The analysis consists of two parts, the computation of a phonetic distance network and a series of sociocultural interviews. Phonetic distance was measured by Levenshtein distance between cognates in word lists and analyzed with a Neighbor-Net network. Interviews with Mam speakers focused on subjective judgments of intelligibility, contact, and social attitudes. Four main dialect …
Intelligent Media Creation Utilizing Passive Song Detection, Kody Ferguson
Intelligent Media Creation Utilizing Passive Song Detection, Kody Ferguson
Defensive Publications Series
A system is described that enables a computing system (e.g., mobile phone, camera, tablet computer, etc.) to associate images with a sound that has been detected when an image was captured. The computing system may passively capture an audio sample when a user clicks a photo and compare the audio sample with a song database (e.g., as detected by one or more input device). If a match is found, information, such as the title of the song and the name of the musician, may be retrieved and correlated to the photo. A user may play a song associated with a …
The Stealth Revolution In Personal Jurisdiction, Michael H. Hoffheimer
The Stealth Revolution In Personal Jurisdiction, Michael H. Hoffheimer
Florida Law Review
Since 2011 the Roberts Court has decided six personal jurisdiction cases that impose significant new constitutional restrictions on the power of courts and limit plaintiffs’ access to justice. But the Court’s opinions explaining those decisions have repeatedly denied that the Court is altering settled law.
This Article argues that the Court is engaged in a stealth revolution, a process of radically changing existing law while claiming to follow controlling precedent. By claiming to rely on precedent, the Court avoids the need to offer a clear rule of decision, fails to explain the policies that motivate its changing approach to personal …
The Global Trade Of Cloned Meat, Andrew Jensen Kerr
The Global Trade Of Cloned Meat, Andrew Jensen Kerr
Florida Law Review
Until now commercial animal cloning has been generally limited to breeding stock. But Xu Xiaochun of the Chinese company Boyalife Genetics plans to mass produce animal clones for direct meat consumption. The research partnership between Boyalife and South Korean firm Sooam Biotech suggests the possibility of an international market for cloned food animals.
Can cloned food imports be rejected by national governments? This Article outlines the relevant considerations, and argues that a revised understanding of the “precautionary principle” can help to reconcile disparate, and perhaps ineffable, goals like producing high-quality meat and maintaining the integrity of the human experience.
Why Congress Matters: The Collective Congress In The Structural Constitution, Neomi Rao
Why Congress Matters: The Collective Congress In The Structural Constitution, Neomi Rao
Florida Law Review
Congress currently operates in the shadow of the administrative state. This Article provides a modern reconsideration of why Congress still matters by examining the “collective Congress” within the text, structure, and history of the Constitution. Like the unitary executive, the collective Congress is a structural feature of the Constitution’s separation of powers. With deep roots in political theory, the Framers created a representative and collective legislature that would provide a legitimate mechanism for bringing together the nation’s diverse interests to most effectively pursue the common good. To fully realize the benefits of collective lawmaking, the Constitution insists on the double …
Picking And Choosing Text: Lessons For Statutory Interpretation From The Philosophy Of Language, Victoria Nourse
Picking And Choosing Text: Lessons For Statutory Interpretation From The Philosophy Of Language, Victoria Nourse
Florida Law Review
Textualists claim that they follow statutory text. This Article argues that, in practice, textualists often create meaning rather than find it. Deploying the analytics of linguistic philosophy, this Article takes a deep dive into textualist methodology. The philosophy of language reveals what legal scholarship has left submerged: The very choice of text can put the thumb on the scales of any interpretation. When one pulls a term out of a statute and isolates it from the rest of the text (what I call “isolationist” method), this decontextualization offers the opportunity for adding and subtracting meaning from the statute by “pragmatic …
“Revenge Porn” Reform: A View From The Front Lines, Mary Anne Franks
“Revenge Porn” Reform: A View From The Front Lines, Mary Anne Franks
Florida Law Review
The legal and social landscape of “revenge porn” has changed dramatically in the last few years. Before 2013, only three states criminalized the unauthorized disclosure of sexually explicit images of adults and few people had ever heard the term “revenge porn.” As of July 2017, thirty-eight states and Washington, D.C. had criminalized the conduct; federal criminal legislation on the issue had been introduced in Congress; Google, Facebook, and Twitter had banned nonconsensual pornography from their platforms; and the term “revenge porn” had been added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. I have had the privilege of playing a role in many …
