USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gene therapy and immunotherapy are new up and coming fields in cancer treatment. In August of 2017, the first gene therapy was FDA approved called CAR-T cell therapy("FDA approval brings first gene therapy to the United States," 2017). This therapy uses the patient’s

own T-cells that are genetically modified to attack the cancerous cells. Currently, it takes 4-6 weeks to genetically modify these T-cells, which can be the difference between life and death for a cancer patient (Cheng, Jun, Jiang, & Xi, 2017). There is evidence that gene electrotransfer can help expedite the genetic modification process by having an easy …

Translanguaging Into Raciolinguistic Ideologies: A Personal Reflection On The Legacy Of Ofelia García, Nelson L. Flores

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

The term translanguaging has received a great deal of attention in recent years in applied linguistics. Originally coined to describe a bilingual pedagogical approach Ofelia García extended the definition to encompass the multiple discursive practices of bilingual communities. This broader definition has been taken up in many different ways by scholars seeking to challenge dominant conceptualizations of bi/multilingualism. In this article, I describe the ways that translanguaging offered me a point of entry for better understanding my own experiences as a US Latino. In addition, I discuss how it has equipped me with theoretical tools for speaking back to the …

Effects Of Maternal Views And Support On Childhood Development Through Joint Play, Amiya Waldman-Levi, Sherraine Grinion, Laurette Olson

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: Playful interactions draw a mother and child toward each other in positive ways; therefore, time spent in playful interactions with a responsive mother may be a developmental asset for a child. It is critical to examine how mothers support their children in joint play as well as their views of joint play.

Methods: This mixed-methods study consisted of 32 mothers and their typically developing children. The Parent’s/Caregiver Support of Young Children’s Playfulness, the Test of Playfulness, the Environmental Supportiveness Assessment, and seven open-ended interviews were used to assess joint play and maternal perceptions of this experience.

Animal Cruelty - Who To Blame?, Fakhra Afzal

MSJ Capstone Projects

This piece on animals is a journalistic work where on field situation and visits are recorded coupled with interviews from the sources. It must be noted that the animal lives in a deplorable state in Pakistan, so much so, that there are no fresh legislation since the country gained independence from Britishers in 1947.The same goes true for the state of animal hospitals. Richmond Crawford is the only government run hospital in the metropolis Karachi and the private hospitals are suitable for pet owners only, in a position to go an extra mile to spend money on their imported pets. …

Visualization Of The Small Airways:What It Is And Why It Matters, Mark L Schiebler, Grace Parraga

Medical Biophysics Publications

When the earth transitioned to an oxygen-containing atmosphere, many bacterial species were killed by the free radicals that developed in their cytoplasm. New life forms took advantage of this change by evolving to use oxygen as the final resting place for electrons involved in the Krebs cycle. Animals today rely on getting oxygen into the blood stream and getting carbon dioxide out by ventilation through sequentially smaller and smaller tubes until diffusion takes over, finally reaching the terminal respiratory bronchiole and its associated alveoli for gas exchange. All animals are obligate aerobes. One group has estimated that there are 274 …

Previous work has reported the important links between cellular bioenergetics and the development of chronic kidney disease, highlighting the potential for targeting metabolic functions to regulate disease progression. More recently, it has been shown that alterations in fatty acid oxidation (FAO) can have an important impact on the progression of kidney disease. In this work, we demonstrate that loss of miR-33, an important regulator of lipid metabolism, can partially prevent the repression of FAO in fibrotic kidneys and reduce lipid accumulation. These changes were associated with a dramatic reduction in the extent of fibrosis induced in 2 mouse models of …

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder, which causes dysfunction/loss of lower motor neurons and muscle weakness as well as atrophy. While SMA is primarily considered as a motor neuron disease, recent data suggests that survival motor neuron (SMN) deficiency in muscle causes intrinsic defects. We systematically profiled secreted proteins from control and SMN deficient muscle cells with two combined metabolic labeling methods and mass spectrometry. From the screening, we found lower levels of C1q/TNF-related protein 3 (CTRP3) in the SMA muscle secretome and confirmed that CTRP3 levels are indeed reduced in muscle tissues and serum of an …

Cpue Standardization For The Pacific Saury (Cololabis Saira) Fishery In The Northwest Pacific, Wen-Bin Huang, Chih-Hao Hsieh, Tai-Sheng Chiu, Wei-Ting Hsu, Chih-Shin Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In stock assessment and fisheries management, the standardization of catch per unit effort (CPUE) is critical to derive an effective index of the abundance of exploited fish stocks. In addition to developing various statistical models, a method including the relative fishing power (RFP) of individual vessels has been developed from an intuition concept and applied to bottom trawl fisheries using logbookbased data. This is a convenient and traightforward approach for standardizing the catch-effort data of a fishery. The Pacific saury is a pelagic fish species, and its stock in the Northwest Pacific has been targeted by international fleets since the …

Returning To Nature: Environmental History's Posthuman Direction, William H. Smith Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this thesis were to (A) determine a new historiographical direction for environmental history through analyzing posthuman environmental change, (B) to present a new historical analysis of posthumanity, reinforced by scholarly accomplishes with the anthropocene, that allows the historian to discuss environmental history with humanity as a secondary character, and (C) to show how both the historiography of environmental history, as well as specific case studies of climate, infestations, and natural disasters, are able to present this new direction for environmental history. What has been the end result is that humanity will always improve their condition of sustainability, …

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee Oct 2019

Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

We investigated the species composition and distribution of fish larvae surrounding the upwelling zone in the waters of northeastern Taiwan in July 2011. The surface water had higher temperatures (25.7°C-28.3°C) and lower salinity (33.67-34.05 psu) than did lower water columns. A divergent trend was observed between temperature and salinity in the waters above 80 m. Moreover, we identified a cold-core eddy at the upwelling of the Kuroshio subsurface at waters approximately 60 m beneath the surface. In total, 1834 fish larvae were collected from eight stations; 85 taxa contributing to 60 families were identified. The abundance of fish larvae varied …

Next Year In Jerusalem: Exile And Return In Jewish History, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Next Year in Jerusalem recognizes that Jews have often experienced or imaged periods of exile and return in their long tradition. The fourteen papers in this collection examine this phenomenon from different approaches, genres, and media. They cover the period from biblical times through today. Among the exiles highlighted are the Babylonian Exile (sixth century BCE), the exile after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE), and the years after the Crusaders (tenth century CE). Events of return include the aftermath of the Babylonian Exile (fifth century BCE), the centuries after the Temple’s destruction (first and second CE), and …

Publications and Research

While nuclear tau plays a role in DNA damage response (DDR) and chromosome relaxation, the mechanisms behind these functions are not fully understood. Here, we show that tau forms complex(es) with factors involved in nuclear mRNA processing such as tumor suppressor p53 and poly(A)-specific ribonuclease (PARN) deadenylase. Tau induces PARN activity in different cellular models during DDR, and this activation is further increased by p53 and inhibited by tau phosphorylation at residues implicated in neurological disorders. Tau’s binding factor Pin1, a mitotic regulator overexpressed in cancer and depleted in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), also plays a role in the activation of …
