A Survey Of State-Of-The-Art Gan-Based Approaches To Image Synthesis, Shahram Latifi, Shirin Nasr Esfahani

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

In the past few years, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have received immense attention by researchers in a variety of application domains. This new field of deep learning has been growing rapidly and has provided a way to learn deep representations without extensive use of annotated training data. Their achievements may be used in a variety of applications, including speech synthesis, image and video generation, semantic image editing, and style transfer. Image synthesis is an important component of expert systems and it attracted much attention since the introduction of GANs. However, GANs are known to be difficult to train especially when …

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani Jan 2019

Impact Of Industrial Biocides On Bacterial Isolates From Hydraulic Fracturing Produced Water, Waad Ahmed Aljohani

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biocides are antimicrobial compounds that are designed to kill diverse groups of microbes in an untargeted fashion. Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA are commonly used to manage microbial growth in different industries. It is possible that biocide use may result in the development of bacterial resistance. However, resistance to DBNPA is believed to be limited under normal use conditions. We isolated a number of bacteria from produced water from a hydraulically fractured site in West Texas. We then tested the ability of these isolates to resist Glutaraldehyde and DBNPA. In this study, we found that these isolates have varying resistance to these …

Thiamin-Induced Variations In Oxidative Defense Processes In White Clover(Trifolium Repens L.) Under Water Deficit Stress, Adeel Ghaffar, Nudrat Aisha Akram, Muhammad Ashraf, Yasin Ashraf, Muhammad Sadiq

Turkish Journal of Botany

Vitamins are regarded as vital growth substances. They act as cofactors of various key enzymes involved in metabolism and also have vital influence on metabolic activities of plants. They are believed to play a significant role in plants against abiotic stresses, particularly during water stress. The current experiment was conducted to evaluate the role of exogenously applied thiamin on two white clover cultivars, Super Late Fsd and Layalpur Late, at varying [100% (control), 80%, and 60% field capacities] water regimes. A significant suppression was noted in plant biomass, plant height, chlorophyll a and b contents, total soluble proteins, and shoot …

Genetic Diversity And Agronomic Performance Of Slovenian Landraces Of Proso Millet (Panicum Miliaceum L.), Marko Flajsman, Natasa Stajner, Darja Kocjan Acko

Turkish Journal of Botany

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) has many favored nutritional and agronomic traits, which makes it appropriate for cultivation and consumption all around the world. Genomic resources for proso millet are still very limited but the set of genomic data is improving. In this study, we genotyped six Slovenian landraces of proso millet (P. miliaceum L.) along with one Slovene autochthonous cultivar, Son?ek. The chosen set of 11 SSR markers showed that there is low overall heterozygosity (0.561) among Slovenian landraces of proso millet. However, we were able to determine distinct groups on the dendrogram for different landraces and the cultivar …

Natural And Anthropic Forest Fragments Have Distinct Ecological Behavior Due To Their Different Origin And Landscape Context, Cleber Souza, Polyanne Coelho, Paola Ferreira Santos, Gisele Cristina De Oliveira Menino, Jean Morel, Aline Moreira, Rubens Manoel Dos Santos Jan 2019

Natural And Anthropic Forest Fragments Have Distinct Ecological Behavior Due To Their Different Origin And Landscape Context, Cleber Souza, Polyanne Coelho, Paola Ferreira Santos, Gisele Cristina De Oliveira Menino, Jean Morel, Aline Moreira, Rubens Manoel Dos Santos

Turkish Journal of Botany

We tested the hypothesis that plant populations in natural fragments have distinct ecological behavior in relation to anthropic fragments. We selected the species Myrcia splendens (SW.) DC. in 2 forest fragments located in southeastern Brazil that present different origins and landscape contexts. The natural fragment originates from landscape relief variations and is inserted in a native grassland matrix, while the anthropic fragment originates from fragmentation due to area conversion and is inserted in an agricultural matrix. We established transects covering an area from one border to the other in each fragment, and we established subunits of 400 m2 within them. …

"And He Was Anti-Christ": The Significance Of The Eighteenth Year Of The Reign Of The Judges, Part 2, Daniel Belnap

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

For the Nephites, the sixteenth year of the reign of the judges was tremendously difficult. The arrival of the people of Ammon, in itself an incredible disruption of Nephite society, precipitated a battle, which Mormon describes as a "tremendous battle; yea, even such an one as never had been known among all the people in the land from the time Lehi left Jerusalem'' (Alma 28:2). The dead, we are told, were not counted due to their enormous number. These events compounded the pre-existing struggles that resulted from the sociopolitical fallout from the reforms of Mosiah. Though Alma 30:5 suggests that …

Identification And Expression Of Dmrt1 And Sox9 During The Gonadal Differentiation Of Rana Chensinensis, Xin-Yi Li, Wen-Jie Jin, Lei Lei, Yuhui Zhang Jan 2019

Identification And Expression Of Dmrt1 And Sox9 During The Gonadal Differentiation Of Rana Chensinensis, Xin-Yi Li, Wen-Jie Jin, Lei Lei, Yuhui Zhang

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Gonadal sex differentiation proceeds by the interplay of various genes including the transcription factors and secretory factors in a complex network. Dmrt1 and Sox9 were considered to be the essential genes involved in the testicular differentiation in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes. Here, we have successfully isolated and characterized cDNAs encoding the Rana chensinensis orthologs of Dmrt1 and Sox9, and we have determined patterns of expression during gonadal differentiation and adult tissues. At the molecular level, a clear sexual dimorphism of rcDmrt1 and rcSox9 was observed in the gonad-mesonephros complex or gonads of tadpoles during stages 26-46. The rcDmrt1 transcript …

Spatiotemporal Distribution And Population Structure Of Clibanarius Symmetricus (Randall, 1840) (Crustacea, Diogenidae) In An Amazon Estuary, Ana Carolina Melo Rodrigues, Jussara Moretto Martinelli-Lemos Jan 2019

Spatiotemporal Distribution And Population Structure Of Clibanarius Symmetricus (Randall, 1840) (Crustacea, Diogenidae) In An Amazon Estuary, Ana Carolina Melo Rodrigues, Jussara Moretto Martinelli-Lemos

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Rocky outcrops in the intertidal zones of estuaries often contain a highly diverse microbenthic community which includes the hermit crab, Clibanarius symmetricus, an abundant species on the equatorial Amazon coast. However, the ecology of this anomuran is poorly understood. Given this, the present study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution and structure of the C. symmetricus populations that inhabit the rocky outcrops of the Marapanim estuary in northern Brazil. Samples were collected monthly over a yearly cycle covering both the dry and rainy seasons in the upper and lower midlittoral zones during low tide. The distribution and abundance of C. symmetricus were …

Application Of Multifactorial Discriminant Analysis In The Morphostructural Differentiation Of Wild And Cultured Populations Of Vieja Azul (Andinoacara Rivulatus), Johanna Caez, Ana Gonzalez, Martin A. Gonzalez, Elena Angon, Jorge M. Rodriguez, Francisco Peña, Cecilio Barba, Antón García Jan 2019

Rodriguez, Francisco Peña, Cecilio Barba, Antón García

Turkish Journal of Zoology

To better determine the ecological variation (body shape and structure) of the Vieja Azul (Andinoacara rivulatus; syn.: Aequidens rivulatus) in northwest Ecuador (Los Ríos Province), 300 specimens of both sexes (150 male and 150 female) were collected from 3 different locations, one from a wild production system and two from fish farm populations in the Quevedo River. Twelve meristic, 26 traditional morphometric, and 32 truss measurements, among 25 anatomical landmarks, were determined. The body weight (BW), total length (TL), eye diameter (ED), dorsal fin ray length (DFRL), and body perimeter 3 (P3) showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between production systems, and sex had significant influence on preanal length (Pre-AL), P3, and body width 2 (LC2). Females showed higher mean values than males in all measurements, except for BW. The Fulton factor differed for both factors considered. The canonical discriminant analysis revealed a percentage of correct assignment of 64.42% for the dataset, 85% and 60.9% for cultured and wild females, and 62.1% and 56.3% for wild and cultured males, respectively, as well as morphometric variation between groups. Results could be attributed to environmental conditions (habitat, temperature, and food). The Mahalanobis test showed greater distances among females than among males. In conclusion, this study provides valuable morphological information on the shape and structure of Andinoacara rivulatus that can be used to characterize and quantify the changes that occur as a consequence of adaptation to a different habitat. The authors hope that the information obtained from the present study will be helpful for fisheries, biologists, and taxonomists.

Induction Of Abnormal Sperm Heads In Small Mammals Under Chronic Ionizing Radiation, Lyudmila Bashlykova, Oksana Raskosha, Natalia Starobor Jan 2019

Induction Of Abnormal Sperm Heads In Small Mammals Under Chronic Ionizing Radiation, Lyudmila Bashlykova, Oksana Raskosha, Natalia Starobor

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The results of this study show a mutagenic effect of low-dose ionizing radiation in male germ cells. The damage of male germ cells was assessed by the frequency of abnormal sperm heads in tundra voles (Microtus oeconomus Pall.), bank voles (Myodes glareolus Schreb.), and field mice (Apodemus agrarius Pall.) from the 30 km exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power station and for laboratory animals (mice and rats) under chronic γ-irradiation. The abnormal sperm head detection method used appeared to be sensitive to conditions of low-dose irradiation and can consequently be recommended as a bioindicator to monitor environmental radiation pollution.

Introduction: Property In Ecology, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2019

Introduction: Property In Ecology, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Are property rights in ecological resources compatible with environmental protection? Might they be essential?

Working at the local level, conservationists have often rediscovered Aldo Leopold’s counsel that private rights can be more effective than government regulation. Conservation goals have been dramatically enhanced by the growth of land trusts and increasing use of property instruments such as conservation easements. Land ownership in fee simple is one way a conservation organization may protect a particular place, but it is hardly necessary in many contexts. Conservation easements and other partial interests in land are often a highly cost-effective alternative, particularly where conservation is …

Corrective Justice And The Unlawful Means Tort: Is There A Right To Trade?, Kerry Sun Jan 2019

Corrective Justice And The Unlawful Means Tort: Is There A Right To Trade?, Kerry Sun

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This paper investigates the extent to which the theory of corrective justice can account for the purpose, structure, and elements of the tort of unlawful interference with economic relations. It considers various proposed accounts of the tort, contending that the tort cannot be justified as an exception to the privity doctrine, a response to the defendant’s attempts to assert indirect control over the plaintiff, or a form of liability stretching. Extending a proposed account of the tort based on the theory of abuse of rights, this paper develops the idea of a “right to trade” that is founded on the …

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power Jan 2019

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article attempts to delineate the scope of a municipality’s legal power within the realm of environmental management. Part one of this article looks at the legal position of a municipal government in the Canadian constitutional framework. The authors note that municipalities are creatures of statute and their available powers are tightly prescribed by legislation. Part two of this article is a case study of the City of Toronto's efforts to manage pollution in the Great Lake region, particularly with respect to Lake Ontario. Despite the limits to a municipality’s power, the authors argue that many effective pollution prevention strategies …

From Protecting Lives To Protecting States: Use Of Force Across The Threat Continuum, Milton C. Regan Jan 2019

From Protecting Lives To Protecting States: Use Of Force Across The Threat Continuum, Milton C. Regan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The increasing prominence in recent years of non-international armed conflicts that extend across state borders has strained the traditional legal categories that we use to regulate state use of force. Simultaneous with this phenomenon has been growing acceptance that human rights law and international humanitarian law should co-exist, with the former informing interpretations of the latter to varying degrees. Scholars continue to debate vigorously the implications of these developments and how these bodies of law should interact. As Kenneth Watkin’s book Fighting at the Legal Boundaries: Controlling the Use of Force in Contemporary Conflict observes, however, commanders have no choice …

“We Are Perpetually Moralists:” Samuel Johnson And Renaissance Epistemology, Brandon Schneeberger Jan 2019

“We Are Perpetually Moralists:” Samuel Johnson And Renaissance Epistemology, Brandon Schneeberger

Quidditas

This article discusses how new Renaissance epistemological views shaped the important eighteenth-century critic Samuel Johnson. I argue that Johnson emphasizes conversation as an important element of epistemology, pushing against what was an over-emphasize on book learning perpetuated by educators such as Peter Ramus. The rise in print-culture led to a shift in epistemology, in which knowledge could be seen as linear, codified, or fixed. While Johnson works both within and against these new epistemological trends, I argue that his criticism of John Milton’s poetry can be appreciated more fully if Johnson’s own reservations about print culture are kept in mind. …

The Fiscal Policy Of Richard Iii Of England, Alex Brayson Jan 2019

The Fiscal Policy Of Richard Iii Of England, Alex Brayson

Quidditas

Influenced by the “new” fiscal historiographical agenda of the 1990s, this article pioneers a radical reconstruction of the Yorkist-era royal budget. This demonstrates that the increased role of demesne revenues managed by the royal chamber in financing total expenditures under Edward IV, which was famously applauded by B. P. Wolffe, signally failed to provide for long-term fiscal stability. The removal of Edward’s French pension in 1483 led to a substantial deficit which compelled Richard III to contravene his brother’s pledge to “live of his own”. Richard’s sustained attempts, during 1483-4, to resurrect and revise controversial late Lancastrian attempts to secure …

Beyond Posters And Powerpoints: A Case For Authentic Multimodal Writing In The 21st-Century Ela Classroom, Amber Jensen

The Utah English Journal

When I graduated from high school in 2001, my classmates and I were delighted to be the first graduates of a new century. Ushering in the twenty-first century evoked glittering promises of new and faster technologies, networked global communication, and a wide array of professional possibilities. When I entered my first classroom as a high school English teacher in 2004, however, I noticed that not much about the classroom or the curriculum had changed: I taught many of the same classic novels I had read in high school, I assigned the same kinds of writing tasks I had written as …

“Sapere Videre” How A Spreadsheet Helps “Knowing How To See” Royal Power On Display In England’S Counties, 1277 To 1642, James H. Forse

Quidditas

Using a spreadsheet tracking touring in England’s counties by entertainers attached to members of England’s royal families suggests that such activity was wide-spread dating from the time of Edward III, and that those entertainers may have served to “advertise” royal power.

Shazer: An Etymological Proposal In Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2019

Shazer: An Etymological Proposal In Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In 1 Nephi 16:13–14, Nephi mentions the name Shazer as a toponym the Lehite clan bestowed on a site in western Arabia “four days” journey south-southeast of the valley of Laman. The Lehites used this site as a base camp for a major hunting expedition. A footnote to the first mention of the name Shazer in the 1981 and 2013 Latter-day Saint editions of the Book of Mormon has virtually enshrined “twisting, intertwining” as the presumed meaning of this toponym. However, the structure of Nephi’s text in 1 Nephi 16:12–13 suggests that the name Shazer serves as the bracketing for …
