Age- And Sex-Related Abc Transporter Expression In Pyrethroid-Susceptible And – Resistant Aedes Aegypti, Leslie C. Rault, Ellis J. Johnson, Scott T. O'Neal, Rui Chen, Sarah E. Mccomic, Daniel R. Swale, Troy D. Anderson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Resistance mechanisms to synthetic insecticides often include point mutations and increased expression of genes encoding detoxification enzymes. Since pyrethroids are the main adulticides used against Aedes aegypti, which vectors pathogens such as Zika virus, understanding resistance to this insecticide class is of significant relevance. We focused on adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in the pyrethroid-resistant Puerto Rico (PR) strain of Ae. aegypti. We investigated the expression patterns of six ABC transporters previously characterized as differentially expressed in insecticide-challenged mosquitoes, or increased mRNA expression in pyrethroid-resistant Ae. aegypti, by comparing PR to the Rockefeller (Rock) susceptible strain. …
The Good, The Bad, And The Necessity Of Empathy In Ethics, Emma Loftus
The Good, The Bad, And The Necessity Of Empathy In Ethics, Emma Loftus
Scripps Senior Theses
Although empathy has been implicated in both academia and pop culture as nearly analogous to morality, some philosophers and psychologists have taken issue with this assessment. It has been argued that from an ethical perspective, empathy is biasing, myopic, and perhaps more trouble than it is worth. In this paper, I first address whether empathy is a necessary baseline trait for having some degree of ethical motivation. Based on the differing moral experiences of sociopaths and autistic individuals, as well as empathy’s unique ability to motivationally bridge the gap between self and other, I conclude that empathy is a required …

Nutrition plays an important role in proper physical and cognitive functioning. However, there is limited evidence on the relationship between overall diet, cognition, and academic success in children, particularly among low-income and diverse groups. The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between healthful versus less healthful food group intake, cognitive performance, and academic achievement in a diverse sample of schoolchildren. 868 urban schoolchildren (age 8 to 10 years) participated in the study. Intake of healthful (fruits, vegetables, unsweetened beverages) and less healthful (sweet and salty snacks, sugar-sweetened beverages) food groups was determined via a food frequency questionnaire. …

Comandantas And Caracoles: The Role Of Women In The Life And Legacy Of The Zapatista Movement, Roxanne Rozo-Marsh
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis delves into the role of women in the Zapatista movement and how that role has changed over time in the private, public and political spheres. It also draws parallels between the struggle for female liberation within Zapatismo and the struggles of working-class, women of color movements in the United States. Chapters are focused on topics including women's involvement in the San Andrés Accords, the Women's Revolutionary Law, the Other Campaign and Marichuy's electoral campaign as well as personal observations from time spent in Oventik, a Zapatista caracol. As complement to the text, the thesis includes a visual zine.
Examining The Role Of Intra-Household Bargaining In The Adoption Of Green Technology, Antara Anand
Examining The Role Of Intra-Household Bargaining In The Adoption Of Green Technology, Antara Anand
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper investigates factors that affect gender-based differences in intra-household bargaining power that are reflected in consumption decisions regarding the adoption of green technology. Using data from the Indian Human Development Survey-II and a probit regression analysis, I find that increasing the level of a woman’s education (a proxy for increasing bargaining power) increases the likelihood of her household adopting LPG, the cleanest fuel option available. I also create an experimental design to serve as a next step for future research and target data collection on individual-level factors and environmental outcomes. The setup is for a potential intervention that assesses …
Best Practices To Encourage Landfill Diversion In Waste Management Programs, Sondra Abruzzo
Best Practices To Encourage Landfill Diversion In Waste Management Programs, Sondra Abruzzo
Scripps Senior Theses
Waste generation in the United States is at an all time high. Over half of the country’s waste goes to landfill, yet 70 percent of this waste can be recycled or composted. Since landfills pose one of the largest manmade threats to the environment, sustainable waste management strategies should focus on landfill diversion. A successful waste recovery program needs to engage the public, and ensure individuals participate correctly in available waste management systems. This paper sheds light on effective education and awareness strategies used to encourage participation in local waste management systems and promote landfill diversion. By highlighting successful programs …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This quantitative analysis explored measures influencing time to STEM-degree-completion in a correlational, non-experimental analysis of archival data (N = 745). FGCS represent a significant portion of individuals pursuing a post-secondary degree in the United States however, FGCS are less likely to persist to graduation as compared to their continuing-generation peers. FGCS are entering colleges and universities declaring STEM majors yet, are changing their major and or leaving college without a four-year degree (Chen, 2013). FGCS, who identify as female, face additional barriers, whether perceived or actual, in the pursuit of earning a STEM degree. FGCS choose to pursue STEM majors, …
Self-Control Abilities In Squirrel Monkeys (Saimiri Sciureus), Renee Russell
Self-Control Abilities In Squirrel Monkeys (Saimiri Sciureus), Renee Russell
Master’s Theses
Self-control has been studied extensively in both humans and nonhumans in relation to planning, goal-oriented behavior, and overall higher cognitive function. These investigations have resulted in a vast literature pool afflicted by differing definitions, procedural inconsistencies, and numerous paradigms that were thought to measure self-control. I utilized a within subject design to address the question of what these existing tasks were studying and if they produced similar results. The present study tested squirrel monkeys on four tasks. Two of which were widely accepted self-control paradigms (food exchange and accumulation) that involved refraining from choosing a low-value reward in favor of …
The Relationship Between Variation In Social Complexity And Cognitive Performance In Brown Capuchins (Cebus [Sapajus] Apella), Juliana F. Berhane
The Relationship Between Variation In Social Complexity And Cognitive Performance In Brown Capuchins (Cebus [Sapajus] Apella), Juliana F. Berhane
Master’s Theses
The cognitive demand on animals to learn, maintain, and remember the complexities of social relationships is higher for individuals who live more complex social lives. Previous research has suggested that both across and within species, as social complexity increases so does the ability to flexibly learn and manipulate information. Elucidating the relationship between social complexity and cognition is therefore essential to understanding how evolutionary pressures have shaped cognitive development. In this study, I determined if there was a relationship between social complexity and cognitive performance on two standard tests of learning, associative learning and reversal learning. Subjects were 16 members …
Analysis And Control Of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (Frees), Soheil Habibian
Analysis And Control Of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (Frees), Soheil Habibian
Master’s Theses
While rigid robots are extensively used in various applications, they are limited in the tasks they can perform and can be unsafe in close human-robot interactions. Soft robots on the other hand surpass the capabilities of rigid robots in several ways, such as compatibility with the work environments, degrees of freedom, manufacturing costs, and safe interactions with the environment. This thesis studies the behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (FREEs) as a particular type of soft pneumatic actuator that can be used in soft manipulators. A dynamic lumped-parameter model is created to simulate the motion of a single FREE under various …

Soybean aphid (Aphis glycines; SBA) and soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines; SCN) are two major pests of soybean (Glycine max) in the United States of America. This study aims to characterize three-way interactions among soybean, SBA, and SCN using both demographic and genetic datasets. SCN-resistant and SCN-susceptible soybean cultivars with a combination of soybean aphids (biotype 1) and SCN (HG type 0) in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six blocks were used to evaluate the three-way interactions in a greenhouse setup. Treatments receiving SCN were infested at planting with 2000 nematode eggs, …
Mob Grazing Results In High Forage Utilization And Reduced Western Snowberry Size, Heidi Reed, Sharon Clay, Alexander Smart, David Clay, Michelle Ohrtman
Mob Grazing Results In High Forage Utilization And Reduced Western Snowberry Size, Heidi Reed, Sharon Clay, Alexander Smart, David Clay, Michelle Ohrtman
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Mob-grazing strives to maximize forage utilization and minimize selective grazing by using high stocking densities in small paddocks for short durations (12–24 hr). Rotational-grazing uses low stocking densities for a longer time period, retaining about half of the original available forage; although selective grazing can occur. Three cattle (Bos taurus × Bos indicus) grazing intensities: mob- (stocking densities from 32,000 to 67,000 kg ha−1; duration—24 hr); rotation (stocking density—2500 kg ha−1; duration—35 d); and non-grazed systems were compared based on forage utilization and changes to western snowberry (Symphoricarpos occidentalis) (WS) patch volume in a 2-year South Dakota study. …
The Biomechanics Of Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Tigrinum) Underwater Walking On Smooth And Rough Substrates, Megan Lee, Henry Astley Dr.
The Biomechanics Of Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Tigrinum) Underwater Walking On Smooth And Rough Substrates, Megan Lee, Henry Astley Dr.
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In nature, salamanders adapted to terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as varying substrate conditions in their habitats. Discovering more about the effects of substrate types on the kinematic measurements of underwater walking can offer us with more information regarding biological principles and limb evolution. A previous study conducted on the same salamander subjects led us to believe that a rough substrate such as gravel will provide the salamander with better traction and grip to thrust forward for walking underwater compared to a smooth substrate. Therefore, a rougher substrate is expected to have resulting kinematics that will differ significantly from …

Identification Of The Cell Type Expressing The Glycine Transporter 1 (Glyt1) In The Thalamus, Patricia A. Lozano
Identification Of The Cell Type Expressing The Glycine Transporter 1 (Glyt1) In The Thalamus, Patricia A. Lozano
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Glycine acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and a co-agonist of NMDAR at the glutamatergic synapses. Termination of glycinergic neurotransmission is achieved by glycine transporter 1 (GlyT1) and glycine transporter (GlyT2). Both transporters are expressed in the spinal cord, brainstem and cerebellum, but GlyT1 is also expressed in the retina and the forebrain. Previous studies have described the role and cyto- architecture of GlyT1 in the caudal areas of the brain and retina, but not in the structures of the forebrain. Based on our preliminary data, GlyT1 is highly expressed in the thalamus, an area involved in sensory and motor signal …
Anfibia, Martha Carolina Davila Diaz
Anfibia, Martha Carolina Davila Diaz
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga ’S Animales Nocturnos , Jeffrey K. Coleman
Undocumented Crime In Juan Mayorga ’S Animales Nocturnos , Jeffrey K. Coleman
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
The link between criminality and immigration is often personified in the undocumented immigrant. As nations have constricted the flow of immigrants, laws have inscribed a criminal culpability attached to the lack of documentation. The lack of papers becomes such a part of their persona that in Spanish the colloquial term for an undocumented immigrant is a sin papeles ‘illegal immigrant.’ Juan Mayorga’s chilling 2003 play Animales nocturnos (Nocturnal) explores the lengths to which laws can be used to criminalize and psychologically abuse undocumented immigrants. This paper will explore how immigration law manifests itself in the play and how said manifestation …
Strict Liability For Genetic Privacy Violations In The Age Of Big Data, Benjamin Sundholm
Strict Liability For Genetic Privacy Violations In The Age Of Big Data, Benjamin Sundholm
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
The ethical issues implicated by the misuse of genetic information have been smoldering for over half a century, and the age of big data has turned them into a five-alarm fire. In recent years, medical researchers and commercial enterprises have been using technological advancements to develop a variety of innovative ways to use genetic information. For example, it is becoming increasingly common for people to learn more about their health and family history by paying direct-to-consumer (“DTC”) companies to analyze their genetic data. DTC companies store the results of these tests electronically and often share them with pharmaceutical companies …
Discipline And Policing, Kate Levine
Discipline And Policing, Kate Levine
Faculty Publications
A prime focus of police-reform advocates is the transparency of police discipline. Indeed, transparency is one of, the most popular accountability solutions for a wide swath of policing problems. This Article examines the “transparency cure” as it applies to Police Disciplinary Records (“PDRs”). These records are part of an officer’s personnel file and contain reported wrongdoing from supervisors, Internal Affairs Bureaus, and Citizen Complaint Review Boards.
This Article argues that making PDRs public is worthy of skeptical examination. It problematizes the notion that transparency is a worthy end goal for those who desire to see police-reform in general. Transparency is …

In the United States, there are now two systems to adjudicate disputes about harmful speech. The first is older and more established: the legal system in which judges apply constitutional law to limit tort claims alleging injuries caused by speech. The second is newer and less familiar: the content-moderation system in which platforms like Facebook implement the rules that govern online speech. These platforms are not bound by the First Amendment. But, as it turns out, they rely on many of the tools used by courts to resolve tensions between regulating harmful speech and preserving free expression—particularly the entangled concepts …

(Excerpt)
As a student, I never learned how to use parallel structure, or “parallelism,” as a writing technique. I didn’t even know the official term until I started teaching legal writing. But even if I couldn’t name it, I always knew I liked it. As a high-school history student, I felt its force in speeches like Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, William Jennings Bryan’s Cross of Gold, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream. Parallelism always felt to me like the place where poetry meets prose—where even the most mundane writing can start to sing.
The Genie Is Out Of The De-Extinction Bottle: A Problem In Risk Regulation And Regulatory Gaps, Hope M. Babcock
The Genie Is Out Of The De-Extinction Bottle: A Problem In Risk Regulation And Regulatory Gaps, Hope M. Babcock
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Once the province of horror films and fantasy, the idea of recreating extinct life forms is poised to move from science fiction to laboratories and from there to the world at large. While “de-extinction is not something that will take place tomorrow . . . scientists are making major advancements, and eventual success appears inevitable.” Spurred on by the burgeoning field of genetic engineering, it was only a matter of time before scientists turned their attention to recreating extinct life forms, either for the thrill of it or in atonement for the human role in the extinction process.
But science …
Enhanced Efficiency Nitrogen Formulation Effect On Grass-Legume Pasture Productivity, Kathryn Marie Payne
Enhanced Efficiency Nitrogen Formulation Effect On Grass-Legume Pasture Productivity, Kathryn Marie Payne
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is generally restricted on mixed species forage systems due to its stimulatory effect on grasses which increases competition with legume species. Reduced legume growth from this competition can compromise forage nutritive value and prospective yields. The controlled-release nature of several enhanced efficiency fertilizer N products holds the potential to improve legume persistence in mixed species pastures while providing supplemental N required by the grass component. The studies contained in this dissertation evaluated the effect of different enhanced efficiency N formulations (ATU, ESN, methylene urea, SuperU, and a 75% ESN: 25% urea blend) and untreated …

Long-Term Land Management Practices And Their Effect On Soil Health And Crop Productivity, Thomas Joseph Muratore Jr.
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Agricultural intensification reliant on monocrops could change soil health in a way that does not support maximum crop productivity. Twenty-nine-year-old no-till field plots at the University of Kentucky Spindletop research farm showed a significant reduction in corn yields from continuous corn plots compared to those from plots in various types of rotation. The objective of this study was to determine what role soil microbes might play in yield reduction and how management and time effects microbial community structure. Samples were collected from the following treatments: continuous corn (CC), continuous soybean (SS), a 2-year corn/soybean rotation (CCSS), Corn in rotation with …

Effects Of Abiotic Stresses On Sorbitol And Ribitol Accumulation And Sorbitol Biosynthesis And Metabolism In Tomato [Solanum Lycopersicum L.], Afaf Almaghamsi
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Abiotic stresses are responsible for limiting crop production worldwide. Among diverse abiotic stresses, drought and salinity are the most challenging. Plants under these conditions have diverse strategies for tolerating stress. Osmotic adjustment and osmoprotection occur in plants during salinity and drought stress through accumulation of compatible solutes to a high level without interfering with cellular metabolism. Polyols (sugar alcohols) including sorbitol and ribitol are one such class of compatible solutes. Using plants of wild-type (WT) and three genetically-modified lines of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. ‘Ailsa Craig’), an empty vector line ‘TR22’, and 2 sdh anti-sense lines ‘TR45’, and ‘TR49’ …

Unravelling The D1r-D2r Heteromer, Margaret M. Champion
Unravelling The D1r-D2r Heteromer, Margaret M. Champion
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Dopamine receptors D1R and D2R form a heterooligomeric complex with signaling properties distinct from the individual receptors. Aberrant expression of this protein-protein complex is linked to the etiology of various neuropsychiatric diseases. Formation of the D1R-D2R heteromer is thought to be dependent upon electrostatic interactions occurring between the carboxyl tail of D1R and the third intracellular loop of D2R. Using this interaction site as template, I synthesized several peptides designed to disrupt the minimal area of the D1R-D2R interaction interface and tested these using whole cell lysates of human brain tissue and dopamine receptor constructs. I report that a synthetic …
