Determination Of Feline Ab Blood Types In Bangkok And Vicinities By The Tube Test, Teerawee Sangkaew
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The most important blood group system in cats is the AB system, which is identified by the presence and absence of antibodies and the antigen on the surface of red blood cells. Blood type A, B and AB are recognized in cats worldwide. The presence of strong alloantibodies against type A in all type B cats, and those with high titer against type B in some type A cats can cause significant transfusion reactions when cats are transfused with mismatched blood. Frequencies of blood types in a cat population is essential for estimating risks of transfusion reactions. The objectives of …

Counter-Intuitive Climate Forcing: Post Paris Agreement Corporate Incentives, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This article applies a micro-level lens to details of disincentives embodied in the new U.S. tax law effective in 2018, affecting corporate action to address climate change, and applies a macro-level assessment of how corporate action is affecting U.S. realization of its climate change goals and requirements. The article examines and offers several state law options that can substitute as alternative incentives, and an unrelated ‘Opportunity Zone’ provision in the new federal tax law, all of which can provide alternative legal paths.
The Links Between Motivational Techniques, Successful Physical Therapists, And Successful Rehab Clinics, Abigail Alyse Richmond
The Links Between Motivational Techniques, Successful Physical Therapists, And Successful Rehab Clinics, Abigail Alyse Richmond
Senior Honors Theses
There is a strong positive correlation between a successful physical therapist (PT), their clinic, and the motivational techniques used during therapy. The PT should be prepared to sit down with each patient and set short- and long-term goals to help them accomplish what they desire through therapy. Effective communication skills, practical skills and technique, individualized care, and organizational and environmental factors are the four major aspects that define patient-therapist relationships. Patient adherence to their home exercise program (HEP) is vital to a successful rehabilitation, and therefore the PT’s goal should be to help the patient understand the importance of the …
Music As Evidence For A Creator, Andrew Foster
Music As Evidence For A Creator, Andrew Foster
Senior Honors Theses
Throughout history, mankind has made music. While music is artistic, it is also scientific and informed by natural occurrences within the physical world. Mathematical relationships between frequencies, the harmonic series, the materials necessary to build musical instruments, and naturally measured time provide bases for the musical elements of pitch, timbre, and rhythm. Though scientific discovery can inform the practice of music, the origin of music cannot be explained through scientific or evolutionary means because music is not a necessity for survival. The fact that music does exist and has natural bases suggests that music is designed, and its elements were …

Evolution Of C-Reactive Protein, Asmita Pathak, Alok Agrawal
ETSU Faculty Works
C-reactive protein (CRP) is an evolutionarily conserved protein. From arthropods to humans, CRP has been found in every organism where the presence of CRP has been sought. Human CRP is a pentamer made up of five identical subunits which binds to phosphocholine (PCh) in a Ca2+-dependent manner. In various species, we define a protein as CRP if it has any two of the following three characteristics: First, it is a cyclic oligomer of almost identical subunits of molecular weight 20–30 kDa. Second, it binds to PCh in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Third, it exhibits immunological cross-reactivity with human CRP. In the …

The Mark Of The Japanese Murrelet (Synthliboramphus Wumizusume): A Study Of Song And Stewardship In Japan’S Inland Sea, Charlotte Hyde
Pomona Senior Theses
The Japanese Crested Murrelet Synthliboramphus wumizusume occupies a limited range in Southern Korea and Japan and is considered vulnerable by the IUCN. There is strong indication of a colony of Japanese Murrelets located in Kaminoseki, Japan; however, no nests or individuals have yet been found. The is also evidence that murrelets make use of this habitat during their vulnerable autumnal molting season during which they cannot fly. This habitat is threatened by the construction of a nuclear power plant in Tanoura Bay. Construction of this plant would result in loss of nesting sites, food supply, and other components vital to …

Interactions Between Inflammation And Female Sexual Desire And Arousal Function, Tierney K. Lorenz
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review—To describe the current state of research on interactions between inflammation and female sexual function.
Recent findings—Inflammation may interfere with female sexual desire and arousal via direct (neural) and indirect (endocrine, vascular, social/behavioral) pathways. There are significant sex differences in the effect of inflammation on sexual function, arising from different evolutionary selection pressures on regulation of reproduction. A variety of inflammation-related conditions are associated with risk of female sexual dysfunction, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and chronic pain.
Summary—Clinical implications include the need for routine assessment for sexual dysfunction in patients with inflammation-related conditions, the potential for anti-inflammatory …

Personal Reflections On Being A Postcolonial Feminist Animal Law Professor, Maneesha Deckha
Personal Reflections On Being A Postcolonial Feminist Animal Law Professor, Maneesha Deckha
Animal Law Review
The author reflects on her experiences in the field of animal law. A recurring theme throughout the Article is that the author’s struggle to see herself being part of the animal law at all. This is because mainstream animal law writing has tended to take a liberal legal approach, while the author has focused her work around concepts of intersectionality, feminist, and postcolonial theory in a field she has self-described as “Philosophy, Critical Theory, and Animal Ethics.” Consistent with her intersectional approach, the author highlights how her experience being Canadian, being female, and being ‘radicalized’ have all intersected to shape …

© 2019. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd A fundamental question in cognitive science is whether an animal can use a cognitive map. A cognitive map is a mental representation of the external world, and knowledge of one’s place in this world, that can be used to determine efficient routes to any destination. Many birds and mammals are known to employ a cognitive map, but whether other vertebrates can create a cognitive map is less clear. Amphibians are capable of using beacons, gradients and landmarks when navigating, and many are proficient at homing. Yet only one prior study directly …

Articles
From March 3 1919 to November 10 1919 Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes's understanding of the First Amendment underwent a transformation In Schenck Debs and Frohwerk all decided in March 1919 Justice Holmes authored majority opinions that embraced a "bad tendencies" test as the constitutional standard required to regulate "“ or even proscribe entirely "“ political speech that includes a call to unlawful action Although Holmes used the language of a "clear and present danger" these decisions applied a very deferential standard of review and did not require the government to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the probability of political speech …

Hackett, Gregory A. Kopp, Gareth Morgan, Christopher G. Guglielmo, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
The mechanisms associated with the ability of owls to fly silently have been the subject of scientific interest for many decades and may be relevant to bioinspired design to reduce noise of flapping and nonflapping flying devices. Here, we characterize the near wake dynamics and the associated flow structures produced during flight of the Australian boobook owl (Ninox boobook). Three individual owls were flown at 8 ms-1 in a climatic avian wind tunnel. The velocity field in the wake was sampled at 500 Hz using long-duration high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) while the wing kinematics were imaged simultaneously using high …

Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is a rare and highly aggressive cancer that develops from mesothelial cells lining the pleura and other internal cavities, and is often associated with asbestos exposure. To date, no effective treatments have been made available for this pathology. Herein, we propose a novel immunotherapeutic approach based on a unique vaccine targeting a series of antigens that we found expressed in different MM tumors, but largely undetectable in normal tissues. This vaccine, that we term p-Tvax, is comprised of a series of immunogenic peptides presented by both MHC-I and -II to generate robust immune responses. The peptides were …

It has previously been shown that high dietary salt impairs vascular function independent of changes in blood pressure. Rodent studies suggest that NADPH-derived reactive oxygen species mediate the deleterious effect of high salt on the vasculature, and here we translate these findings to humans. Twenty-nine healthy adults (34 ± 2 yr) participated in a controlled feeding study. Participants completed 7 days of a low-sodium diet (LS; 20 mmol sodium/day) and 7 days of a high-sodium diet (HS; 300 mmol sodium/day) in random order. All participants were salt resistant, defined as a ≤5-mmHg change in 24-h mean BP determined while on …
