Obi Nwakanma United States, 2016, Obi Nwakanma, Kathleen Hohenleitner Jan 2019

Obi Nwakanma United States, 2016, Obi Nwakanma, Kathleen Hohenleitner

UCF Created OER Works

Born and raised in southern Nigeria, Obi Nwakanma is an Igbo poet and scholar of African and African diasporan literature. The three poems included here, “A Brief Memoir of Time,” “Child of Four Winds” and “Last Will and Testament” come from his book, Birthcry (Kraft Books 2016), which was a finalist for the 2016 Nigeria Literature Prize. These poems capture the author’s uniquely lyrical, gnomic, and prophetic voice and represent well the themes that define the volume: ancestry, historical consciousness, the politics and psychology of decolonization, Africa’s place in a polyethnic global society, and openness to the future as the …

“Me? An Addict?” Good News For Shame And Addiction, Rebecca Grisell Jan 2019

“Me? An Addict?” Good News For Shame And Addiction, Rebecca Grisell

Doctor of Ministry

Addictions have penetrated all segments of society, including the Church. The problems addicts face is complicated, complex, and challenging for the church and ministry practitioners. Alongside the rising rate of addiction, society’s shame-awareness has also risen. This is not coincidental or unimportant. While addictive behavior seeks bonding, shame resists bonding. It is the contrary and paradoxical nature of this problem that makes it confusing, mysterious, and perplexing.

Yet there is hope. When shame is addressed with the good news of the Gospel, addiction will lose its grasp and new recovery solutions will arise. This dissertation suggests that the inability to …

The Criminal (In)Justice System Of Virginia: A Critical Reflection And Analysis, Alicia Jiggetts Jan 2019

The Criminal (In)Justice System Of Virginia: A Critical Reflection And Analysis, Alicia Jiggetts

Student Publications

More often than not, society’s attention is hyper-focused on the criminal justice system at the national level. The United States of America has been called out for leading the world in mass incarceration, and scholars like Michelle Alexander and Angela Davis, lawyer activists like Bryan Stevenson, and filmmakers like Ava DuVernay, have played integral roles in making our society collectively pause and take a critical look at our prison nation and the myriad of social inequities and injustices that manifest within it. Our nation is home to five percent (5%) of the global population but accounts for twenty-five percent (25%) …

The Ambassador’S Right-Hand Man: Terrick Hamilton At The Porte, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2019

The Ambassador’S Right-Hand Man: Terrick Hamilton At The Porte, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

These vivid comments by Terrick Hamilton, secretary at the British embassy in Constantinople during the ambassadorship of Lord Strangford, evoked the escalating crisis that engulfed the Ottoman realm in the early 1820s. At a tense but pivotal moment in Ottoman history, the Empire of Sultan Mahmud II faced daunting internal and external pressures triggered by war, revolt, sectarian strife, the erosion of effective ruling institutions, and European penetration. The Greek insurrection against the Sublime Porte broke out in 1821 in the Danubian Principalities, the Peloponnese, and other Greek-inhabited areas, morphing into a prolonged and costly conflict between Ottoman troops and …

Attorney As Accompagnateur: Resilient Lawyering When Victory Is Uncertain Or Nearly Impossible, Margaret Reuter Jan 2019

Attorney As Accompagnateur: Resilient Lawyering When Victory Is Uncertain Or Nearly Impossible, Margaret Reuter

Faculty Works

Social justice lawyers come to the profession intending to make a difference through the instruments of law. And gloriously, they often make a difference in people’s lives for the better. They make our world a more just, compassionate, and tolerant place. But there is no denying that, in poverty law practice, legal success can be elusive, ephemeral, or perhaps a mirage. How does that lawyer feel when the legal remedies at her disposal, even if “successful,” fail to mitigate the injustices suffered by her clients? Are there definitions of professional satisfaction and success that are enduring, even if legal success …

Role Of Mcp-1 And Ccr2 In Ethanol-Induced Damage In The Developing Brain, Kai Zhang Jan 2019

Role Of Mcp-1 And Ccr2 In Ethanol-Induced Damage In The Developing Brain, Kai Zhang

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy and is the leading cause of mental retardation. Alcohol exposure during development results in the loss of neurons in the developing brain. The underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear and there currently is no cure for FASD. Ethanol-induced neuronal death is accompanied by neuroinflammation. Chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) and its receptor C-C chemokine receptor type 2 (CCR2) are critical mediators of neuroinflammation and microglial activation. Using a third trimester equivalent mouse model of ethanol exposure, we found that treatment of Bindarit (MCP-1 synthesis inhibitor) and RS504393 (CCR2 …

A Fractured International Response To Crispr-Enabled Gene Editing Of Agricultural Products, Christopher M. Holman Jan 2019

A Fractured International Response To Crispr-Enabled Gene Editing Of Agricultural Products, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

In 2015, Science Magazine named CRISPR gene editing technology its “Breakthrough of the Year,” and for good reason. CRISPR represents a transformative advance in the ability of biotechnologists to edit genes and genomes in both humans and nonhuman organisms. This article begins with a discussion of recent advances in gene editing, including the development of CRISPR and other sequence-specific nucleases (SSNs), and how this new technology compares to other techniques for genetically modifying agricultural plants such as selective breeding, induced random mutagenesis, and, more recently, the use of recombinant technology to produce transgenic plants. It then turns to the complex …

Trump’S Angry White Women: Motherhood, Nationalism, And Abortion, Yvonne F. Lindgren Jan 2019

Trump’S Angry White Women: Motherhood, Nationalism, And Abortion, Yvonne F. Lindgren

Faculty Works

A majority of white women — fifty-two percent — voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. White working-class women supported Trump in even greater numbers: sixty-one percent of white women without college degrees voted for Trump. This result seems remarkable considering Trump’s derogatory statements about women and his staunch opposition to legal access to abortion. Why did white women, especially those most likely to need access to reproductive healthcare—poor and working-class women — vote heavily against their own interests to embrace a candidate who called for punishing women who access abortion? Much recent commentary has considered this question …

The Human Element: The Under-Theorized And Underutilized Component Vital To Fostering Blockchain Development, Joshua A.T. Fairfield Jan 2019

The Human Element: The Under-Theorized And Underutilized Component Vital To Fostering Blockchain Development, Joshua A.T. Fairfield

Cleveland State Law Review

Blockchain is about one-third math and two-thirds game theory. The math runs on silicon processors. The game theory runs on grey matter. Earlier in this symposium, the last panel essentially asked, "What's different about blockchain and its relationship to humans?" That will be our focus: What is the right relationship between technology and the community that builds it? And, why would we care?

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Striatal Dopaminergic Dysfunction In Parkinson’S Disease, Brittany D. Walls Jan 2019

Neuropsychological Correlates Of Striatal Dopaminergic Dysfunction In Parkinson’S Disease, Brittany D. Walls

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder associated with dysfunction of the basal ganglia, which contributes to a range of motor, cognitive, and affective symptoms. Striatal dopaminergic deficits are one of the core pathological mechanisms thought to contribute to the extra-motor (i.e., cognitive and affective) symptoms in early PD. The present study investigated the relationship between striatal dopaminergic integrity and cognition in 21 patients with PD and 21 age and education matched controls. Each individual underwent dopamine transporter (DaT) imaging with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) (i.e., DaTscan) and standardized neuropsychological testing. Strong positive associations were found between …

Analysis Of The Thermal Stability Of A Diverse Panel Of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Rsv) Strains, Darby Deford Jan 2019

Analysis Of The Thermal Stability Of A Diverse Panel Of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (Rsv) Strains, Darby Deford

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major respiratory pathogen of young infants and the elderly and is associated with upper and lower respiratory disease. Vaccine development for RSV has been hindered by poor immunogenicity in target populations, genetic and physical instabilities, and a legacy of vaccine-enhanced disease. The fusion and attachment proteins of RSV, F and G, have been seen to be responsible for inducing the majority of neutralizing antibodies. However, little remains known about how differences in RSV F and G affect virus replication and stability. In this thesis, we proposed to examine the replication and thermal stability of …

Primary Report Of First Documentation Of Mammal Footprints From The Late Oligocene Inthe Sivas Basin, Turkey, Beki̇r Levent Mesci̇, Ahmet Cem Erkman, Şaki̇r Önder Özkurt Jan 2019

Primary Report Of First Documentation Of Mammal Footprints From The Late Oligocene Inthe Sivas Basin, Turkey, Beki̇r Levent Mesci̇, Ahmet Cem Erkman, Şaki̇r Önder Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The footprints in this study, which were considered to have been made by ungulates, were discovered on mudstone that was approximately 5 cm thick, near an abundant mud-cracked plane located on the stratigraphic subsurface of the late Oligocene Karayün Formation, which crops out over wide areas in southern Sivas (Turkey) and has terrestrial, fluvial sediment characteristics. These ungulate footprints documented from the late Oligocene of the Karayün Formation in southern Sivas represent the first reported vertebrates in Anatolia. The footprints of three different species of ungulates were identified. The shapes, depth, and widths of the footprints provided some basic ichnotaxonomic …
