Research Progress On Hazards And Toxicity Of Major Mycotoxins In Grain, Yuan Hang
Food and Machinery
Mycotoxins are metabolized by filamentous fungi and have certain toxic effects. Based on the stable formation of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines (HepG2 cells), a variety of plasma proteins were secreted, which could effectively evaluate the in vitro toxic effects of mycotoxins. We reviewed the harm of major mycotoxins to food and their toxic effects on human cells, and this was significant for predicting and preventing the effects of mycotoxins on human and animal health in the future.

A rapid quasi-deterministic quantitative method for the determination of 3-methyl-quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid (MQCA) residues in olaquindox metabolites of animal-derived foods was developed, by using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The sample tissue was extracted by alkaline hydrolysis to extract MQCA, purified by anion solid phase extraction column, and detected by LC-MS/MS, and then quantified by internal standard method. The results showed that MQCA had a good linear relationship in the concentration range of 0.5~50.0 ng/mL, and the correlation coefficient was 0.999 7. The detection limit of MQCA was 0.1 μg/kg. The recovery rate was 95.6%~108.2% at the addition level of 0.1, …
Guiding Intuitions In Education: Lesson Planning As Consummatory Experience, Leonard J. Waks
Guiding Intuitions In Education: Lesson Planning As Consummatory Experience, Leonard J. Waks
Education and Culture
In this paper I account for the role of guiding intuitions in teaching, focusing on the intuitions formed in the process of lesson planning. I start (in section one) by reviewing some research on lesson planning to locate the role of intuition in the process. I then turn to Wertheimer’s and Kohler’s gestalt psychology (section two) and Dewey’s theory of consummatory experience (section three) further to clarify and explain the process of lesson planning as the formation of guiding intuitions. I conclude that gestalt psychology is a less promising framework for explaining guiding intuitions than Dewey’s theory of experience.

A Study Of Upper Ocean Dynamic Features Based On Advanced Coherent Marine Radar Techniques, Lisa Nyman
Open Access Dissertations
During three research cruises in the Pacific, a vertically-polarized X-band Doppler Marine Radar (DMR) was installed onboard the research vessels. One of the goals during these cruises was to measure near-surface currents. Ocean currents have been measured with marine radar since the 1980’s using the dispersion shell technique. However, currents measured in this classical way cannot resolve fine-scale current variations. To fill this gap, the Doppler Velocity Synthesis algorithm (DoVeS) is developed to synthesize radial Doppler velocity information from a moving ship in order to obtain a two-dimensional surface current vector field around the ship track. During the first cruise, …

The Spillover Effect Of Marketing Discolored Beef On Consumer Preferences For Nondiscolored Beef, Ryan Feuz, F. Bailey Norwood, Ranjith Ramanathan
The Spillover Effect Of Marketing Discolored Beef On Consumer Preferences For Nondiscolored Beef, Ryan Feuz, F. Bailey Norwood, Ranjith Ramanathan
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
Consumers prefer bright, cherry-red retail beef. Retailers often mark down the price of discolored beef for quick sale. However, following this practice could result in a net loss of revenue if consumer willingness to pay (WTP) for nondiscolored beef is negatively affected by the presence of discolored beef in the consumer choice set. Through a hypothetical online survey and a controlled in-person experiment, we determine that marketing discolored beef together with nondiscolored beef increases most consumers’ evaluation of, but not their WTP for, nondiscolored beef.

Organizational Capacity Of Nonprofit Organizations In Rural Areas Of The United States: A Scoping Review, Jayme E. Walters
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Rural America is facing a plethora of problems related to poverty, crime, health, and education. Nonprofit organizations serve a vital role in rural communities by providing services and advocacy to residents. Yet, it is unknown if rural nonprofits have the means to effectively address the complex issues before them. This study examines the results of scoping review which characterizes the state of empirical knowledge regarding the organizational capacity of rural nonprofits in the United States. Fifteen articles from the past decade uncovered challenges and strengths related to organizational capacity, though more research is necessary to inform funders and educators.

Anterior Tooth-Use Behaviors Among Early Modern Humans And Neandertals, Kristin L. Krueger, John C. Willman, Gregory J. Matthews, Jean-Jaques Hublin, Alejandro Perez-Perez
Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Early modern humans (EMH) are often touted as behaviorally advanced to Neandertals, with more sophisticated technologies, expanded resource exploitation, and more complex clothing production. However, recent analyses have indicated that Neandertals were more nuanced in their behavioral adaptations, with the production of the Châtelperronian technocomplex, the processing and cooking of plant foods, and differences in behavioral adaptations according to habitat. This study adds to this debate by addressing the behavioral strategies of EMH (n = 30) within the context of non-dietary anterior tooth-use behaviors to glean possible differences between them and their Neandertal (n = 45) counterparts. High-resolution …

Background Dysfunctional autophagy is implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathogenesis. The alterations in the expression of many autophagy related genes (ATGs) have been reported in AD brains; however, the disparity of the changes confounds the role of autophagy in AD. Methods To further understand the autophagy alteration in AD brains, we analyzed transcriptomic (RNAseq) datasets of several brain regions (BA10, BA22, BA36 and BA44 in 223 patients compared to 59 healthy controls) and measured the expression of 130 ATGs. We used autophagy-deficient mouse models to assess the impact of the identified ATGs depletion on memory, autophagic activity and amyloid-beta (A …

Puff Puff Pass The Legislation: A Comparison Of E-Cigarette Regulations Across Borders, Rachel E. Zarrabi
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
This comment explores the types of legislation, approaches to regulating e-cigarettes, and analyzes whether the FDA’s campaign and current regulations are effective. So far, it appears that the United States is ahead of the game with its new, aggressive proposal for regulating e-cigarettes. The FDA is standing against the companies and products that target youthful consumers. Most countries acknowledge the gaps in current scientific research regarding the long-term health risks of vaping, and some are waiting to take a legislative stance until it is clearer which side of the health line e-cigarettes fall. Section II of this comment discusses the …

Beauty Shouldn’T Cause Pain: A Makeover Proposal For The Fda’S Cosmetics Regulation, Lauren Jacobs
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
The American cosmetics industry is not required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct pre-market safety assessments of cosmetics. The FDA only reviews personal care products when people voluntarily report problems. Further, companies continue to test animals for cosmetics, despite the FDA’s recommendation that manufacturers seek more humane and accurate testing. Although the FDA does not require animal testing for product safety or premarket approval, the United States is one of the largest users of laboratory animals for product testing. There are two pending pieces of legislation, which if passed would be the first acts of cosmetic regulation …

The model of efficacy and toxicity testing has been largely based on a model of high quantities of low quality data gathered in vitro. Recent advances in nanotechnology offer an alternative strategy. Soft lithography has made microscale tissue engineering possible. It is now feasible to create the cellular microenvironments of healthy and diseased tissues and engineer biological systems with high fidelity. Further, development of multielectrode array (MEA) platforms by precise location of metal electrodes on glass substrates has proven to be a robust innovative tool to use with cells that generate electrical activity. In this study, we first fabricated …

© 2019 The Author(s). Background: Baboons (genus Papio) and geladas (Theropithecus gelada) are now generally recognized as close phylogenetic relatives, though morphologically quite distinct and generally classified in separate genera. Primate specific Alu retrotransposons are well-established genomic markers for the study of phylogenetic and population genetic relationships. We previously reported a computational reconstruction of Papio phylogeny using large-scale whole genome sequence (WGS) analysis of Alu insertion polymorphisms. Recently, high coverage WGS was generated for Theropithecus gelada. The objective of this study was to apply the high-Throughput "poly-Detect" method to computationally determine the number of Alu insertion polymorphisms shared by T. …
Immediate Repeated Reading Has Positive Effects On Reading Fluency For English Language Learners: An Eye-Tracking Study, Jennifer Hemmert Hansen
Immediate Repeated Reading Has Positive Effects On Reading Fluency For English Language Learners: An Eye-Tracking Study, Jennifer Hemmert Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Fluent reading has been described as the ability to read a passage with accuracy, at a steady rate, with minimal hesitancy, and good comprehension (Grabe, 2009; Kuhn, Schwanenflugel, & Meisinger, 2010). Dysfluent reading can affect motivation for reading in English language learners, thereby limiting access to a wealth of language input from written texts (Taguchi, Gorsuch, & Sasamoto, 2006). Extensive research of repeated reading in L1 settings has been shown to increase reading fluency (Samuels, 1979; National Reading Panel, 2000), while comparatively little research has been done on repeated reading in L2 settings (Grabe, 2009). The objective of this eye-tracking …
