Depending on the initiating stimulus, cancer cell death can be immunogenic or non-immunogenic. Inducers of immunogenic cell death (ICD) rely on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress for the trafficking of danger signals such as calreticulin (CRT) and ATP. We found that nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF), an emerging new modality for tumor ablation, cause the activation of the ER-resident stress sensor PERK in both CT-26 colon carcinoma and EL-4 lymphoma cells. PERK activation correlates with sustained CRT exposure on the cell plasma membrane and apoptosis induction in both nsPEF-treated cell lines. Our results show that, in CT-26 cells, the activity of …

Land Acknowledgment, Scripting And Julius Caesar, Jeffery G. Hewitt
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This essay follows my presentation at Osgoode’s 21st Constitutional Cases Conference on the growing practice of land acknowledgments, honour and the legacy of now retired Chief Justice McLachlin. During the presentation, I examined some of the Supreme Court of Canada’s constitutional cases arising out of section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, along with the practice of land acknowledgments in academic spaces. What follows is an essay critically examining scripted land acknowledgments mainly from post-secondary institutions in Canada. Are land acknowledgments contributing to Canada’s national reconciliation project as so often purported? I consider whether the practice is becoming too comfortable …

A Tesol Ma Introductory Course: A Course For New Tesol Ma Students At Brigham Young University, Paula Celina Cabrera Campos
TESOL MA Projects
Concerns at the beginning of a graduate program may or may not be met promptly enough to ensure students will all begin confidently. Not all graduate students understand what is expected of them at the beginning of their programs and where they can go to receive the necessary help. The Introductory TESOL MA Course has been designed to bridge this gap and support students in their desire to feel more prepared for this academic challenge. The three-module online course addresses the most common topics graduate students wish they had known at the beginning of their graduate experience. The course will …
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Trajectories In The Evolution Of Mormon Studies On Faith And Science, Steven L. Peck
Mormon Studies Review
The relationship between science and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been and continues to be a complicated story. Concerns and differing perspectives about science provided the underlying context for a number of formal and informal institutional directions taken by the church in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries. Often, these were influenced by differences in opinion about science among various leaders of the church. Areas in which science played a role include: the relationship between secular and church education, a battleground in framing doctrinal questions about creation—including syncretic influence from the rise of Christian fundamentalism and …

Doing Business In The World Without Becoming Worldly, Lindon J. Robison, David R. Just, Jeffery R. Oliver

Doing business in the world consists of, among other things, exchanging goods and services. One way people reflect who they are and what they love most is by what they exchange and by the quantities and terms with which they exchange goods and services.
Eroticism As A Metaphor For The Human-Divine Relationhip In Attar’S Conference Of The Birds, Or Mantiqu’T-Tair, Marisa Sikes
Eroticism As A Metaphor For The Human-Divine Relationhip In Attar’S Conference Of The Birds, Or Mantiqu’T-Tair, Marisa Sikes
Quidditas
Farídu’d-Dín Ἁṭṭār’s The Speech of the Birds employs transgressive erotic imagery in multiple sub-tales in ways that both enhance the frame tale’s significance and suggest that persistent, discrete categories of love poetry and religious poetry are untenable as far as Ἁṭṭār’s works are concerned. Eroticism in Ἁṭṭār’s work paradoxically elicits shock and supports orthodoxy, sometimes simultaneously. In the narrative of Shaikh-i Sam’ān religious taboos are broken by a Muslim shaikh devoted to a Christian beloved who spurns him continuously. In “The Princess and the Beautiful Slave-Boy” eroticism is overtly presented as a metaphor for temporary, ecstatic union with the divine. …
Chloroviruses Lure Hosts Through Long-Distance Chemical Signaling, David Dunigan, Maitham Ahmed Al-Sammak, Zeina Al-Ameeli, Irina Agarkova, John Delong, James L. Van Etten
Chloroviruses Lure Hosts Through Long-Distance Chemical Signaling, David Dunigan, Maitham Ahmed Al-Sammak, Zeina Al-Ameeli, Irina Agarkova, John Delong, James L. Van Etten
James Van Etten Publications
Chloroviruses exist in aquatic systems around the planet where they infect certain eukaryotic green algae that are mutualistic endosymbionts in a variety of protists and metazoans. Natural chlorovirus populations are seasonally dynamic but the precise temporal changes in these populations and the mechanisms that underlie them have, heretofore, been unclear. We recently reported the novel concept that predator/prey-mediated virus activation regulates chlorovirus population dynamics, and in the current manuscript demonstrate virus packaged chemotactic modulation of prey behavior.
Viruses have not previously been reported to act as chemotactic/chemo-attractive agents. Rather, viruses as extracellular entities are generally viewed as non-metabolically active spore-like …
The Future Of Facial Recognition Is Not Fully Known: Developing Privacy And Security Regulatory Mechanisms For Facial Recognition In The Retail Sector, Elias Wright
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
In recent years, advances in facial recognition technology have resulted in a rapid expansion in the prevalence of private sector biometric technologies. Facial recognition, while providing new potentials for safety and security and personalized marketing by retailers implicates complicated questions about the nature of consumer privacy and surveillance where a “collection imperative” incentivize corporate actors to accumulate increasingly massive reservoirs of consumer data. However, the law has not yet fully developed to address the unique risks to consumers through the use of this technology. This Note examines existing regulatory mechanisms, finding that consumer sensitivities and the opaque nature of the …
Dirty Little Secrets: Fracking Fluids, Dubious Trade Secrets, Confidential Contamination, And The Public Health Information Vacuum, Elliot Fink
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
While the carbon energy industry has frequently claimed that hydraulic fracturing processes and ingredients are proprietary and protected by trade secret laws, their large scale and volume nationwide and the well-documented dangers that they pose to public health have brought fracking under scrutiny. When individuals have been adversely impacted in their own backyards, weak federal and state laws and regulation have generally left these impacted citizens with little to no recourse and part of this problem stems from questionable uses of privacy law, specifically dubious claims of trade secrecy. Focusing specifically on Pennsylvania as a model of insufficient state regulation …

In August 2011, the Albemarle County school board unanimously voted to remove Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet from the sixth-grade curricula. Over twenty students beseeched the board for the book to remain, and they were ignored. Teachers were afraid to voice their opinions on the matter. The novel has not been taught since in Albemarle, on any grade level, nor any other Sherlock Holmes texts.

Although inbreeding depression in life-history traits has been well characterized, inbreeding effects on mating behaviour and sexually selected traits have been less well studied. Here, we assess levels of inbreeding depression in a number of fitness-related reproductive parameters of female decorated crickets, Gryllodes sigillatus. We predicted that due to direct negative effects of inbreeding and a potential trade-off between reproduction and current survival, as suggested by effects of inbreeding on immunity, inbred females would show significantly reduced reproductive output compared with outbred females. We also examined sex-specific effects of inbreeding on mating competency, focusing specifically on the female's decision …

As students and a professor in, but not of, an American liberal arts college, we ask whether our current institutions of higher education are compatible with a project of decolonization. Grounded in our own testimonios and drawing on a genealogy of Western knowledge, we argue that U.S. higher education authorizes and perpetrates settler colonial violence. Furthermore, based on our experiences surviving this violence, we conclude that the Universitas adapts to inhibit and neutralize institutional reform that might challenge its coloniality. As such, we find that higher education is not only incompatible, but irredeemably incommensurable with decolonization. In being incommensurable, we …

Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Metabolism Reprogramming In Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Human Lung Carcinogenesis, James Tate Fortin Wise
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is an established human carcinogen that is a worldwide environmental health concern. It is well understood that reactive oxygen species, genomic instability, and DNA damage repair deficiency are important contributors to Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. After decades of research some cancer hallmarks remain understudied for the mechanism of Cr(VI) carcinogenesis. Dysregulated cellular energetics have been established as a hallmark of cancer. Energy pathways that become dysregulated in cancer include mitochondrial respiration, lipogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway, one carbon metabolism, and increased anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen or ‘Warburg effect’.
To investigate metabolism changes in Cr(VI) carcinogenesis, we exposed …

This Article analyzes the proposed "No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2019" (NOPEC). This legislation, which was introduced in the United States Senate and House of Representatives, addresses the antitrust issues involved in suing the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), their member states and their state owned oil companies (SOEs), other states and their SOEs, and private companies for their participation in an international cartel that has long been involved in regulating the production and distribution of oil and other petroleum products. It is our view that this proposed legislation provides a relatively moderate approach to …
