Generating Biologic And Genetic Research Tools To Investigate Serotype I Feline Coronaviruses, Robert Christian Mettelman Jan 2019

Generating Biologic And Genetic Research Tools To Investigate Serotype I Feline Coronaviruses, Robert Christian Mettelman

Dissertations

Serotype I feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) is an alphacoronavirus of high veterinary importance due to the 99% mortality rate observed in cats. Since the 1980s, robust experimentation on these viruses has been limited by availability of culturable pathogenic strains, few permissive cell lines, and a lack of standardized methods to study their basic virology. These complications have resulted in variable and conflicting literature reports, have slowed study of clinical strains and hindered effective vaccine design. The goal of this dissertation was to develop a laboratory "toolbox" containing standardized methods, permissive cell lines and genetic techniques to alleviate some of …

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua Jan 2019

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

Teachers and students require a range of tools to engage with visual texts. Using The Great American Dust Bowlby Don Brown (2013) as an exemplar text, we outline four conceptions of visual literacy: rhetorical, instructional, industrial and visuo-spatial and discuss their use in our literacy education practice. In addition, we provide a brief model of a second text, The Arrival (Tan, 2013) and a list of suggested texts for students at different levels (elementary, middle, and high school). We argue that these tools have the potential to deepen conceptions of visual literacies and empower teachers and students to understand …

Coaggregation Patterns And Surface Characteristics Of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg Under Varying Nutrient Conditions, Amanda Rielinger Jan 2019

Coaggregation Patterns And Surface Characteristics Of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg Under Varying Nutrient Conditions, Amanda Rielinger

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is one of the best studied probiotic organisms. The ability of probiotics to adhere to other microorganisms and the intestinal epithelium is thought to play a major role in their protective functions. Coaggregation is an important mechanism for biofilm formation by microorganisms. The goals of this study were to examine the ways in which nutrient variation affects intercellular interactions between LGG and other gut microbes and the hydrophobic character of LGG. We hypothesized that nutritional variation may affect the ability of LGG to coaggregate and form biofilms and thus affect its probiotic characteristics and ability to …

Analyzing Counter Improvised Explosive Device Equipment For Effectiveness In Preventing Casualty, Roxanne Reinhardt

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This research explores injury patterns of casualties from combat due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), which can vary due to the unique circumstances related to an injury. This research hopes to understand how decisions on equipment production and safety mechanisms are employed. Some of the preliminary research includes a meta-analysis of various IED events, with a focus on conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. This research will also consider historical, current, and predictive analysis, to best understand the IED threat and to help save lives. Finally, this IED study is novel because it will approach this research from a holistic anthropological …

Orthorexia Nervosa Among College Students: Associations With Restrictive Eating, Excessive Exercise, And Psychological Distress, Alyssa Lawson Jan 2019

Orthorexia Nervosa Among College Students: Associations With Restrictive Eating, Excessive Exercise, And Psychological Distress, Alyssa Lawson

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as a "fixation" or an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food (Bratman, 2000). ON is not considered an official eating disorder in the DSM-5; however, ON consists of an intense diet regimen (Mcinerney-Ernst, 2011). Individuals who suffer from ON have found to be considerably invested in the foods they consume and how meals are prepared. ON can be a cause for a concern because some individuals would rather starve than eat foods which they consider to be "impure" (Donini, Marsili, Graziani, Imbriale, & Cannella, 2004). Individuals with ON have been found to be more interested …

Attitudes, Beliefs, And Changing Trends Of Cannabis Usage Among College Students, Addison L. Jendza Jan 2019

Attitudes, Beliefs, And Changing Trends Of Cannabis Usage Among College Students, Addison L. Jendza

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Cannabis, specifically, marijuana has a complicated history in the United States where it started off as an ingredient in medicines, went to become highly taboo and illegal, and now is slowly becoming legalized medically and recreationally in the United States. There are legal barriers in preventing research on marijuana making it difficult for all its benefits and detriments to be known and proven. Marijuana is most used among college students and people within the age range of 18-25 making them a priority population. Students (n""74) on Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) campus were randomly selected to participate in taking a 22-question …

Characterization Of Reproductive Tumors In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Shanti Nicole Gunda Bernstein Jan 2019

Characterization Of Reproductive Tumors In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Shanti Nicole Gunda Bernstein

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Tumors are characterized by over-proliferation of cells. However, not all tumors behave the same or have the same effects on surrounding non-tumorous tissues. Using the model organism C. elegans, we established tumor rupture trends in tumorous animals of three different genotypes. The characteristics studied include the effect of a germline tumor on the distribution of intermediate filament proteins in the endotube of the intestine, rate of tumor rupture between the hermaphrodites of each genotype, and tumor nuclear morphology of males and hermaphrodites of two genotypes. We conclude that tumors in C. elegans behave differently among the genotypes studied and the …

Examination Of Behavioral Lateralizations In Juvenile Tarantulas In The Presence Of Prey Odors, Matthew Angelosanto Jan 2019

Examination Of Behavioral Lateralizations In Juvenile Tarantulas In The Presence Of Prey Odors, Matthew Angelosanto

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The functional and/or structural specialization of the left or right side of the brain (behavioral lateralization) has substantial impacts on the interactions an animal makes with other organisms and its surroundings. While this has been extensively shown throughout vertebrates, it has recently been demonstrated in various taxa of invertebrates. Despite this, its presence in arachnids, and specifically tarantulas, remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine whether behavioral lateralization is present in the juvenile tarantulas Pterinochilus murinus and Brachypelma albopilosum in response to prey odors. If behavioral lateralization was found, I aimed to detennine how it differed …

Facebook And Emotion Regulation, Jennifer Dement

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Social Media Use (SMU) is a relatively new phenomenon, but one which has rapidly become ubiquitous in common culture, globally. Many users report benefit and some research supports assertions that there are benefits to be gleaned from healthy SMU. However, there are a great deal of studies exploring risks and negative consequences for some users. More specifically, there is a growing body of research considering whether SMU is an addictive behavior that may function to regulate emotion. Emotion Regulation (ER) has not been studied in any depth in relation to SMU, but has been studied in relation to established addictions. …

Harnessing Nature For Occupational Therapy: Interventions And Health Promotion, Gina Ferra Kaplanis Jan 2019

Harnessing Nature For Occupational Therapy: Interventions And Health Promotion, Gina Ferra Kaplanis

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Literature is beginning to emerge which states that participation in natural environments can be restorative, provide much needed physical activity and assist with health promotion and prevention of illness. Theories such as Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan, 1995) and Biophilia Hypothesis (Wilson, 1993) support the benefits for participation in natural outdoor environments. Health benefits of participation in nature including accessing Vitamin D, improving balance, attention restoration, reduced myopia, stress reduction are widely present in literature. Despite the health benefits of participation in nature, occupational therapists rarely complete interventions in the natural environment. Principles of adult learning and occupational adaptation were used …

Sniffer-Dog Searches In The United States, Eve M. Brank, Jennifer L. Groscup, Emma Marshall, Lori Hoetger

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

We present here a complement to Judge Wayne Gorman’s article on the law of sniffer-dog searches in Canada found on page 52. Similar to Judge Gorman’s article, we examine U.S. Supreme Court cases about the use of police dogs in searches.

The U.S. Supreme Court first addressed the issue of dog sniffs in U.S. v. Place 1 pursuant to the Fourth Amendment protection from unreasonable government searches and seizures and requirements for obtaining a search warrant.2 We start with a brief historical 3 reminder of Fourth Amendment case law to provide context for current sniffer-dog questions. Next, we provide an …

Emerging Technologies And The Courts, Gary E. Marchant Jan 2019

Emerging Technologies And The Courts, Gary E. Marchant

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The world is changing at a faster pace today than ever before, in large part fueled by an unprecedented rate of technology advances. This pace of technological change will only accelerate going forward. We all must take this reality of unprecedented change into account as we plan our futures, perform our professional duties, and in the case of judges, write judicial opinions. As Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John Roberts stated in an interview at the time of his appointment, “politicians – and judges for that matter – should be wary of the assumption that the future will …

Judicial Recall And Retention In The #Metoo Era, Jordan M. Singer Jan 2019

Judicial Recall And Retention In The #Metoo Era, Jordan M. Singer

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The voter recall of California judge Aaron Persky in June 2018 was a watershed cultural moment. For the first time in more than forty years, a sitting judge had been removed from the bench, by the local citizenry, in a special election. The recall—instigated in reaction to Judge Persky’s lenient sentence for a defendant convicted of three counts of sexual assault—was hailed as a major political victory for the #MeToo movement, and a sign of an emerging consensus that soft treatment of sex offenders within the justice system is no longer acceptable.

Any questions about the sustainability of the moment …

Microbial Fe(Iii) Reduction As A Potential Iron Source From Holocene Sediments Beneath Larsen Ice Shelf, Jaewoo Jung, Kyu-Cheul Yoo, Brad E. Rosenheim, Tim M. Conway, Jae Il Lee, Ho Il Yoon, Chung Yeon Hwang, Kiho Yang, Christina Subt, Jinwook Kim Jan 2019

Microbial Fe(Iii) Reduction As A Potential Iron Source From Holocene Sediments Beneath Larsen Ice Shelf, Jaewoo Jung, Kyu-Cheul Yoo, Brad E. Rosenheim, Tim M. Conway, Jae Il Lee, Ho Il Yoon, Chung Yeon Hwang, Kiho Yang, Christina Subt, Jinwook Kim

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Recent recession of the Larsen Ice Shelf C has revealed microbial alterations of illite in marine sediments, a process typically thought to occur during low-grade metamorphism. In situ breakdown of illite provides a previously-unobserved pathway for the release of dissolved Fe2+ to porewaters, thus enhancing clay-rich Antarctic sub-ice shelf sediments as an important source of Fe to Fe-limited surface Southern Ocean waters during ice shelf retreat after the Last Glacial Maximum. When sediments are underneath the ice shelf, Fe2+ from microbial reductive dissolution of illite/Fe-oxides may be exported to the water column. However, the initiation of an oxygenated, …

Korean Encyrtids (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) Associated With Scale Insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha), Soo-Jung Suh

Insecta Mundi

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) are sap-sucking plant parasites and economically important pests on agricultural and horticultural crops. Scale insects are often difficult to control since their body is protected by a wax cover. Parasitic wasps that live and develop in scale insects are important natural enemies and effective biological control agents of pest scale insects. Chalcid wasps of the family Encyrtidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) comprise the largest group of parasitoids of scale insects, followed by the family Aphelinidae. Here, an updated list of all thirty-six species of encyrtids in twenty-three genera that have been identified or reported from South Korea is …
