Appellate Briefs
Amici are constitutional law scholars who teach and write in the field of constitutional law, including as it relates to regulation of abortion, and who have a shared interest in identifying the proper standards of review. This brief sets forth Amici's considered understanding of the framework governing abortion regulation, as established by the decisions of this Court, and how to preserve the undue burden test as established in this Court's precedents over the last two decades. It also explains why the decision below, if permitted to stand, would threaten the uniformity and supremacy of federal law.

New Mexican Experiences With Three Nephites, Madison Gotfredson
Individual Item Submissions
A missionary retells the experience of a second generation Native American whose parents were converted by a "white man" named Clemente. President Kimball later identifies the stranger as one of the Three Nephites. The informant also discusses Native American lore about a "white man," believed to be Jesus and a tablet of the ten commandments written in a form of Hebrew and Egyptian.

The Effects Of Urbanization On Bee Communities Depends On Floral Resource Availability And Bee Functional Traits., Caleb J Wilson, Mary A Jamieson
The Effects Of Urbanization On Bee Communities Depends On Floral Resource Availability And Bee Functional Traits., Caleb J Wilson, Mary A Jamieson
Entomology Faculty Publications
Wild bees are important pollinators in many ecosystems threatened by anthropogenic disturbance. Urban development can reduce and degrade natural habitat for bees and other pollinators. However, some researchers suggest that cities could also provide refuge for bees, given that agricultural intensification may pose a greater risk. In this study, we surveyed bee communities at 15 farms and gardens across an urban-rural gradient in southeastern Michigan, USA to evaluate the effect of urbanization on bees. We examined how floral resources, bee functional traits, temperature, farm size, and the spatial scale of analysis influence bee response to urbanization. We found that urbanization …
Intramuscular Injection Of Plant Derived Antimicrobials: A Potenial Use Against M.Bovis In Cattle, Elizabeth Johnson
Intramuscular Injection Of Plant Derived Antimicrobials: A Potenial Use Against M.Bovis In Cattle, Elizabeth Johnson
Master's Theses
Plant derived antimicrobials (PDAs) such as trans-cinnamaldehyde, eugenol and carvacrol, possess strong antibacterial properties yet are generally regarded as safe. In the current crisis of antibiotic resistance, the use of PDAs as alternatives to prevent and control bacterial infections in livestock has gained momentum. The inhibitory effects of PDAs on common bacteria such as C.difficile, Listeria, Salmonella have been widely studied. PDAs have also been found effective in wall-less bacteria such as Mycoplasma, for which common antibiotics are not effective and vaccines are not always effective. In animal husbandry, PDAs can be potentially added in feed to metaphalactively prevent …

Bone is richly innervated by nerve growth factor-responsive (NGF-responsive) tropomyosin receptor kinase A-expressing (TrKa-expressing) sensory nerve fibers, which are required for osteochondral progenitor expansion during mammalian skeletal development. Aside from pain sensation, little is known regarding the role of sensory innervation in bone repair. Here, we characterized the reinnervation of tissue following experimental ulnar stress fracture and assessed the impact of loss of TrkA signaling in this process. Sequential histological data obtained in reporter mice subjected to fracture demonstrated a marked upregulation of NGF expression in periosteal stromal progenitors and fracture-associated macrophages. Sprouting and arborization of CGRP+TrkA+ sensory nerve fibers …

American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) Of The Paunsaugunt Plateau: Movements And Habitat Use, Rebekah Adriana Castro Dungan
Theses and Dissertations
Concerns over human-bear conflict and questions about the ecology of Paunsaugunt Plateau's population of black bears (Ursus americanus) arose due to their visitation to popular recreation sites. Greater insight about bears and their habitat use provides a foundation for conflict mitigation and effective management decisions. Between 2014 and 2017, seventeen black bears (11 female, 6 male) were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio-collars so that we could track their locations, daily activity patterns, and ambient temperatures. By analyzing bear locations, we calculated annual and seasonal home ranges for 16 bears, including 25 den sites. Home ranges typically consisted of …

New Possibilities For Stilt Building, Zhuming Liu
New Possibilities For Stilt Building, Zhuming Liu
Theses
The purpose of the thesis lies in exploring the new possibilities of the stilt building in dealing with two sustainability problems caused by urban development: the Lack of Public Greening in Prosperous, High-density Areas, and the Continuous Sprawl of Private Housing in Suburbs.
As a functional building method with a long history, stilt building, or known as building with “The Pilotis,” regained its vitality in the 20th century with Le Corbusier. However, the common application mode of today’s stilt building has deviated from Corbusier's original intention, which was to provide sheltered outdoor green space for residents in the city. This …

Application Of Machine Learning To Enhance The Diagnostic Utility Of Interictal High Frequency Oscillations In Drug-Resistant Epilepsy, Stefan Sumsky
Application Of Machine Learning To Enhance The Diagnostic Utility Of Interictal High Frequency Oscillations In Drug-Resistant Epilepsy, Stefan Sumsky
Doctoral Dissertations
There is a need for novel biomarkers to aid in the clinical treatment of epilepsy and improve the understanding of seizure generation and the seizure onset zone (SOZ). High frequency oscillations (HFO) are a promising biomarker with the potential to fill this role, but early efforts to apply them have fallen short of clinical quality tools and validity and application of their association with seizure have not been fully explored. This study will advance the understanding and application of HFO to the clinical setting in three ways. First, the relevance of HFO to SOZ and their utility for SOZ localization …
A Churchillian And Benthamite Defense Of Democracy, James Allan
A Churchillian And Benthamite Defense Of Democracy, James Allan
San Diego Law Review
In this Article, I am going to defend democracy against those Cassandras who are pessimistic, even in a comparative sense, about its capabilities and worth. I expect that many of those pessimists about democracy will think me something of a Pollyanna, all too inclined to see the world through rose-colored spectacles that transmogrify what the Cassandras perceive as the three-quarters empty glass into what I claim is a three-quarters full one. So, let me be blunt right from the start. Mine will be a least-bad or Churchillian defense of democracy, one that readily concedes that democratic decision-making has its flaws …

Differences In Guided Imagery Between High And Low Self-Critical Participants: Consensual Qualitative Research Analysis, Julia Halamova, Jana Koroniova, Martina Baránková
The Qualitative Report
As self-criticism is considered to be the major underlying factor of all sorts of psychopathology, it is meaningful to explore the differences between how people deal with their self-criticism based on their level of self-criticism. The aim of this study was to categorise descriptions and investigate differences between 5 high and 5 low self-critical participants in their self-critical, self-protective and self-compassionate imageries. The total sample consisted of 10 university students, who were selected from a larger sample of 88 participants based on their extreme score from The Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale. For analysis, we exploited Consensual Qualitative Research …

Gene therapy approaches are being deployed to treat recessive genetic disorders by restoring the expression of mutated genes. However, the feasibility of these approaches for dominantly inherited diseases - where treatment may require reduction in the expression of a toxic mutant protein resulting from a gain-of-function allele - is unclear. Here we show the efficacy of allele-specific RNAi as a potential therapy for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2D (CMT2D), caused by dominant mutations in glycyl-tRNA synthetase (GARS). A de novo mutation in GARS was identified in a patient with a severe peripheral neuropathy, and a mouse model precisely recreating the mutation …

Humans And The Red-Hot Stove: Hurston's Nature-Caution Theorizing In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Heather Sharlene Higgs Randall
Theses and Dissertations
This paper gives critical attention to the nature versus caution porch conversation in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, arguing that this is a legitimate addition to the anthropological discussion of nature versus culture. Addressing literary critics as well as scholars of the environmental humanities and of multispecies studies, I argue that Hurston's nature-caution discussion is a helpful epistemology which Hurston employs throughout her novel to suggest a single, unified way of understanding the human and nonhuman.

ZIF-8 nanoparticle-doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-S-MC films were prepared via casting method. The effect of different concentrations of ZIF-8 on the physical properties and structural characterization of the films were investigated. The results indicated that ZIF-8 could increase the water resistance and mechanical property of the membrane. Through FTIR, scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and TGA analysis, it was found that ZIF-8 changed the phenomenon of macromolecule agglomeration and improved the thermal stability of the membrane. The breathable behavior of the film was also studied through oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability analysis. The result illustrated that the …
