Karst aquifers are an important source of drinking water in many regions of the world. Karst areas are highly permeable and produce large amounts of groundwater recharge, while surface runoff is often negligible. As a result, recharge in these systems may have a different sensitivity to climate and land cover changes than in other less permeable systems. However, little is known about the combined impact of climate and land cover changes in karst areas at large scales. In particular, the representation of land cover, and its controls on evapotranspiration, has been very limited in previous karst hydrological models. In this …

FOCUS addresses the social issue of trying to Mimic the same college and life experience for Autistic students as for non-Autistic students. Currently the issue is improving, but needs more Marketing to ensure every eligible student is Aware of it. The ideal state is for every Autistic Student achieve confidence and independence, And the world around them to be more Inclusive. I agree with FOCUS that this is A great way to do it, and with more funding and Marketing it can be achieved.

Investigating Multiple Streams Of Consciousness: Using Descriptive Experience Sampling To Explore Internally And Externally Directed Streams Of Thought, Charles Fernyhough, Ben Alderson-Day, Russel T. Hurlburt, Simone Kühn
Psychology Faculty Research
Research into resting-state cognition has often struggled with the challenge of assessing inner experience in the resting state. We employed Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES), a method aimed at generating detailed and high-fidelity descriptions of experience, to investigate how experience in the resting state can vary between internal, external, and multiple simultaneous streams. Using a large body of experiential and brain activation data acquired from five DES participants, independent raters classified sampled moments of experience according to whether they were internally directed, externally directed, or contained elements of both at the same time. In line with existing models, comparison of internal …

This research examines the ways in which children of impoverished families and communities are put at a disadvantage due to the the correlation between poverty and social exclusion, analyzing several African-American children who grew up below the poverty line. Social exclusion in poor communities and neighborhoods is so hindering to a person’s development that they are not able to improve their life circumstances and raise themselves out of poverty. The second part of the research looks at the history of racial inequality in film as well as the marginalization of women of color in the entertainment industry today. Viola Davis, …

Analysis And Simulation Of Convolution Reverb Using City Tech’S New Auditorium, Tian Leng
Publications and Research
In digital signal processing, convolution reverb can simulate the reverberation of a real acoustic space. The acoustics of different seating areas in an auditorium can vary from each other. To determine the reverberant characteristics of City Tech new building’s auditorium, impulse response (IR) signals are recorded in five key locations of the auditorium.
Directly recorded balloon burst is chosen as the source of impulse source. An omnidirectional and a cardioid microphone with flat frequency response curves are used to record IR signals to 24-bit monophonic wav files. Each IR signal, along with a vocal, is convoluted in MATLAB through both …

Effects Of Cold Storage On Nondiapausing Eggs Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ryan W. Geisert, Dalton C. Ludwick, Bruce E. Hibbard
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, became much easier to research with the development of a nondiapausing rootworm strain. In the event that the eggs cannot be used immediately researchers have been known to delay egg hatch by storing the eggs at low temperatures. It is not well known how this technique could affect egg hatch or larval development, which could alter the results of an experiment. To test for this nondiapausing eggs of the western corn rootworm were stored at low temperatures to test for potential negative effects on hatch and larval development. Eggs were stored in either …

Archidamus Revisited: The Case For An Alternate Narrative Of The King Of Sparta, Sean Tobin
History & Classics Student Scholarship
Of all the figures who took part in the Peloponnesian War, perhaps no single person contributed so much to the outcome of the war as Archidamus II. However, if you scour the ancient primary sources, you will be hard-pressed to find a good, objective biography of this Spartan king. Plutarch mentions him only in passing in his Parallel Lives when writing of Agesilaus II, his son. In Xenophon’s Hellenica, Archidamus receives no mention at all, even though his descendants, one of whom bears the same name, feature prominently. Scholars must rely on Thucydides, therefore, to construct a rendering of …
Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman
Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman
Arabic Languages and Literatures
This chapter uses Muslim communities in greater Milwaukee region in Wisconsin, United States as a case study to examine marriage negotiation among Palestinian women. I argue that Muslim women increasingly play a vital role in making changes to their gender roles and enhancing their marriage choices. Intermarriage outside their ethnic and national groups, increase in marriage age, and the rate of unmarried women become visible phenomena among second-generation Muslim. The decreasing number of suitable potential spouses drove Palestinian-American women to look outside their national and ethnic group for marriage partners. This made them prioritize their universal, religious identity as Muslims …

Optimizing Beat Synchronized Running To Music, Jeska Buhmann, Edith Van Dyck, Dobromir Dotov, Marc Leman, Bart Moens
Journal Articles
The use of music and specifically tempo-matched music has been shown to affect running performance. But can we maximize the synchronization of movements to music and does maximum synchronization influence kinematics and motivation? In this study, we explore the effect of different types of music-to-movement alignment strategies on phase coherence, cadence and motivation. These strategies were compared to a control condition where the music tempo was deliberately not aligned to the running cadence. Results show that without relative phase alignment, a negative mean asynchrony (NMA) of footfall timings with respect to the beats is obtained. This means that footfalls occurred …

User Attitudes About Duo Two-Factor Authentication At Byu, Jonathan Dutson
User Attitudes About Duo Two-Factor Authentication At Byu, Jonathan Dutson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Simple password-based authentication provides insufficient protection against increasingly common incidents of online identity theft and data loss. Although two-factor authentication (2FA) provides users with increased protection against attackers, users have mixed feelings about the usability of 2FA. We surveyed the students, faculty, and staff of Brigham Young University (BYU) to measure user sentiment about DUO Security, the 2FA system adopted by BYU in 2017. We find that most users consider DUO to be annoying, and about half of those surveyed expressed a preference for authentication without using a second-factor. About half of all participants reported at least one instance of …
