Marriage In Victorian England, Cheryl Ann Mcdonnell Dec 2018

Marriage In Victorian England, Cheryl Ann Mcdonnell

Honors Program Theses and Projects

When most people consider the lives of women in the Victorian age in Great Britain, a period which covers the years of Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901, they have a pretty rigid idea of what women were like in that era. Most see Victorian women as stifled and restricted, happy in their domestic role, both before and after their marriage. This stereotype is not accurate in reality to the women of the Victorian era. In this essay, I plan to explore what the reality of daily life was for Victorian women. More specifically I plan to examine what …

The Curious Case Of Dr. Writer And Mr. Verbalizer, Libbey Hanson Dec 2018

The Curious Case Of Dr. Writer And Mr. Verbalizer, Libbey Hanson

Tutor's Column

The writer and verbalizer can cause major communication issues within a piece of writing. At the writing center, many students don’t mean what they write; they mean what they verbally say. The writer tries to sound smart while the verbalizer tries to make sense. Many times, students will say “But I know what I want to say!” However, they simply cannot write it down. Communication between the writer and the verbalizer fails because of the attempt to sound smart, and the fear of the written word and its permanence. Freshmen struggle in learning an essay format different than what they …

Milch Sees A Great Future For Art Administrators, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

“I didn’t choose art, art chose me.” That’s how Professor David Milch explains his personal and professional fascination with the arts. “I came from a family where there was always music or always something artistic happening. It was where I felt at home; it was where I found people I could relate to, found ideas, and found the outlets to share the creations we would make with a wider group of people,” says he.

Chemical Analysis Of Aerosol Particle Surfaces, Hillary Woolf Dec 2018

Chemical Analysis Of Aerosol Particle Surfaces, Hillary Woolf

Fall Student Research Symposium 2018

Aerosol particles are thought to impact climate properties. The ability to probe aerosols to understand their chemical properties has been difficult due to a lack of appropriate analytical techniques. Here we present interface-specific SHS techniques to allow for in situ analysis of aerosol particles. Transportation of aerosols from their collection site to the laboratory disturbs their chemical and physical properties thus making it difficult to take accurate measurements of aerosol particles. We show that using a CCD detector is a more effective option for producing more sensitive results and can greatly reduce sampling time and could possibly detect measurements from …

Christmas Eve Caroling, Madeline Thomas Dec 2018

Christmas Eve Caroling, Madeline Thomas

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

One of them is we always go caroling, and we get together with our neighbors, and we’ll all bundle up super super warm and then we run around the neighborhood and stop at all of our neighbors houses and we’ll sing songs really off tune but its great [laughs] and they all hate us for keeping them outside in the cold but we love it and we usually have snowball fights and shove each other in the snow banks- and then we go home and have scones and hot chocolate and then we’ll sometimes watch a Christmas movie.

Christmas Eve Cinnamon Trees, Madeline Thomas Dec 2018

Christmas Eve Cinnamon Trees, Madeline Thomas

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Another one that we do we learned from my Grandma Williams and we make cinnamon roll dough and make them into a triangle and cover them in cinnamon and sugar then fold them up, cut the edges, twist them into a Christmas tree and we decorate them with candy and icing and then we’ll take them out to neighbors. And it's the best because its super tasty cause we usually keep some for ourselves and its super warm cause we’re inside and everyone is usually super happy unless we’re fighting over whose tree is best and then there are arguments …

Frosty’S In The Office, Megan Monson Dec 2018

Frosty’S In The Office, Megan Monson

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

I was single and it was my first nursing job. There were several other young single nurses working with me as well. We had an amazing head nurse with a great sense of humor. Because of that, she put up with and was often the recipient of many of our night time shenanigans.

There was a huge snow storm. During our shift we could see the snow piling up outside the windows of the LDS Hospital. The windows were such that we could unlock them and swing them open. Before long, the windows were open and we were making snowballs. …

Potential Impacts Of The Purple Salt Marsh Crab, Sesarma Reticulatum, On Long Island Sound Salt Marshes, Jaymie Frederick Dec 2018

Potential Impacts Of The Purple Salt Marsh Crab, Sesarma Reticulatum, On Long Island Sound Salt Marshes, Jaymie Frederick

Master's Theses

Salt marshes are important, highly productive ecosystems that provide many ecological benefits, including shoreline protection. Salt marshes were long believed to be driven by bottom up forces, however, recent research has suggested that top down influences may impact the foundation species Spartina alterniflora, and consequently marsh structure. This study looked at patterns of Spartina alterniflora dieback along creek bank areas and assessed Sesarma reticulatum abundance spatially throughout the marsh to improve understanding as to whether Sesarma may be influencing the dieback phenomenon. Dieback was occurring in all three salt marshes studied, at two of those marsh sites the rate of …

The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius Dec 2018

The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Lay Folks’ Catechism is an English rendering of injunctions issued in 1357 by John Thoresby, Archbishop of York, setting forth the elements of Christian belief. Ever since W. W. Skeat’s treatments, the Catechism has been placed in the general orbit of alliterative verse, yet closer identifications have proved elusive. The text is now recorded in both The Index of Middle English Verse and The Index of Middle English Prose; the principal stylistic study proposes that John Gaytryge, the author of the English text, may have been influenced by the system of Latin prose rhythm known as cursus. …
