The Brain In Balance: Tales From A Cellular Biochemist Studying Space And Time, Mark Decoster Dec 2018

The Brain In Balance: Tales From A Cellular Biochemist Studying Space And Time, Mark Decoster

Science Seminars

One definition of the brain is that it senses change. This change can be input to our traditional senses such as light, taste, and touch, to name a few. Sensing change and recording it is also important to deciding output (or not), such as responding to a question or avoiding danger. Short-term through long-term sensing of change may also be stored into memory. This process of sensing change and responding to it with storage may be defined as learning when it helps with the process. At the cellular and biochemical levels, cells in the brain may be excited or inhibited, …

Allisions, Collisions And Groundings: Estimating The Impact Of The Physical Oceanographic Real Time System (Ports(R)) On Accident Reduction, Eric Wolfe, Kenneth N. Mitchell Dec 2018

Allisions, Collisions And Groundings: Estimating The Impact Of The Physical Oceanographic Real Time System (Ports(R)) On Accident Reduction, Eric Wolfe, Kenneth N. Mitchell

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Reductions in the rates of domestic allisions, collisions and groundings (ACGs) are the result of technological advances as well as implementation of best practices in the maritime industry. This study estimates long-term gross benefits derived from expanded implementation of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS®) with respect to reductions in ACG rates in the United States. Following PORTS® installations that provided expanded coverage of U.S. ports and adjoining areas, concomitant decreases in accident rates occurred. While previous estimates suggested that between twenty and sixty percent of grounding accident reductions were due to PORTS®, current research …

A Reinforcement Learning (Rl) Model For Dynamic Optimization Of Switch Port/Queue Buffer Allocation, Imran Pasha Dec 2018

A Reinforcement Learning (Rl) Model For Dynamic Optimization Of Switch Port/Queue Buffer Allocation, Imran Pasha

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described herein for a reinforcement learning (RL) model for dynamic optimization of switch port/queue buffer allocation. According to the described techniques, a trained neural network model can be installed on a switch or on a network management server to dynamically adjust the shared/dedicated buffer allocation for the low/high priority queues in case of a frame loss. The dynamic buffer adjustment continues till the port/queue no longer experience a frame loss.

The Impact Of Online Homework, Time On Homework, Gender, And Metacognition In Improving Student Achievement In Undergraduate Biology Courses, Donald Bishop Cook Jr Dec 2018

The Impact Of Online Homework, Time On Homework, Gender, And Metacognition In Improving Student Achievement In Undergraduate Biology Courses, Donald Bishop Cook Jr

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study sought to address a gap in the literature to determine whether a relationship exists between use of online homework and student achievement in undergraduate biology courses. Previous studies have examined other STEM courses, but few have considered biology. The purpose of the study was to determine whether homework grades in online homework systems can predict student achievement in introductory undergraduate biology courses. This study utilized a correlational analysis by multiple regression using archival data to determine whether final course grades in undergraduate biology courses can be predicted by grades on online homework, time spent on online homework, gender, …

Department Of Surgery Launches Opioid Reduction Initiative

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

Fourth year general surgery resident Megan Lundgren, MD, and a team of researchers led by Scott Cowan, MD, FACS, Vice Chair for Quality for the Department of Surgery, initiated a project aimed at examining Jefferson’s opioid prescribing practices in the perioperative period. The team surveyed more than 400 patients who had undergone general surgery procedures at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. After identifying how many opioids each had been prescribed, they interviewed patients to understand how many they actually took, how many pills were left over and how the leftover pills were being stored and/or disposed of.

“The results of that …

1968 - Fifty Years On..., Charles Yeo

Jefferson Surgical Solutions

As a senior member of the surgical community here at Jefferson, I have immense faith in our future. It is worth underscoring the famous quote of George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Events this year have prompted me to recall the crucial events of my teenage years, specifically the year 1968. Three sources have served to underscore my memories: a CNN special, the Jan/Feb issue of Smithsonian entitled “The Year that Shattered America,” and an exhibit at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, MN. Seismic events occurred in 1968: (1) in January, …

Richard W. Hevner served in the U.S. Marines and is an executive with Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC. While he may not seem an obvious choice to spearhead a bold breast cancer initiative, that’s exactly what he’s doing as part of his role on the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center Advisory Council.

Known as Project 200K by 2024, the initiative aims to increase mammograms within the Jefferson Enterprise to 200,000 per year in just six years. It’s a goal that Hevner is passionate about achieving: “By increasing the number of mammograms, we can also perform more biopsies and surgical procedures and, ultimately, …

Adhesives: Liquid Fasteners For Modern Manufacturing, Colin Senechal, Peter Carbutt

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

Adhesives are currently used in many industries worldwide, but are sometimes overlooked by engineers as a high-performance method of joining parts in an assembly. In fact, adhesives can often provide strong advantages over other methods of assembly such as riveting, bolting and even welding, in a variety of applications.

An Engineer from ITW Performance Polymers, a regional manufacturer of high-performance structural adhesives, will discuss some typical adhesive chemistries, the mechanisms of adhesion, general comparisons with other assembly methods, and a few current market applications with industry leading brands of Plexus, Devcon, and Insulcast.

Rationalized Clustering In Machine Learning, Diveplane Corporation, Christopher Hazard Phd

Defensive Publications Series

[0001] In machine learning, there are currently debates about what an explanation or explainable model is and what is necessary for a given purpose. This post details the concepts of explanation and interpretation to help clarify the difference between the two; discusses how, although interpretation is preferable, explanation is the only option for many machine learning techniques; and then details a clustering technique that aids explanation for unsupervised machine learning.
