Bariatric Surgery As A Treatment To Obesity, Morgan D. Dunn
Bariatric Surgery As A Treatment To Obesity, Morgan D. Dunn
Health Sciences Student Scholarship
This paper focuses on the efficiency and effectiveness that bariatric surgery provides as a treatment for the obesity epidemic that is ever-growing in our country. By taking into account scientific, ethnographical, scholarly, statistic-based, and various other forms of research, this paper argues for the widespread use of bariatric surgery for weight loss, decrease in obesity, and resolution of obesity comorbidities. This paper also focuses on the various factors that affect patient success in bariatric surgery, such as gaps in access, economic problems, psychological issues associated with the procedure, and more. Nevertheless, bariatric surgery, if these factors are taken into consideration, …

Animals And Death: An Analysis Of Animal Remains At The Castledyke South Cemetery Site, Jesse A. Ercolani
Animals And Death: An Analysis Of Animal Remains At The Castledyke South Cemetery Site, Jesse A. Ercolani
Honors Capstones
This thesis explores the placement of animal remains in the Castledyke South Cemetery Site in Barton-on-Humber. The site itself was used by the Anglo-Saxons during the period of the late 5th or early 6th to the late 7th centuries. The major purpose of this paper is to analyze the possible influences that would have led them to bury their dead with animal remains as a type of mortuary artefacts. Age and sex, religion, social status, and economic importance are the analyzed influences, each relying on different sources. While most of the paper relies on archaeological evidence for its support, literary …

Non-native plants have invaded much of the western United States over the past 100 years. Most of these invasive species are early-successional, yet they appear to persist for decades. The goal of this research was to describe non-native and native plant abundance in ex-arable and adjacent undisturbed fields over time.

Sequential Congruency Effects In Monolingual And Bilingual Adults: A Failure To Replicate Grundy Et Al. (2017), Samantha F. Goldsmith, J. Bruce Morton
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Previous research suggests bilingual adults show smaller sequential congruency effects than monolingual adults. Here we re-examined these findings by administering an Eriksen flanker task to monolingual and bilingual adults. The task produced robust conventional and sequential congruency effects. Neither effect differed for monolingual and bilingual adults. Results are discussed in terms of current debates concerning differences in cognitive control between monolingual and bilingual adults.

JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850 μm continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M* > 109 M⊙, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multiwavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust …

Publications and Research
Human neuroimaging studies have consistently reported changes in cerebellar function and integrity in association with obesity. To date, however, the nature of this link has not been studied directly. Emerging evidence suggests a role for the cerebellum in higher cognitive functions through reciprocal connections with the prefrontal cortex. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine appetite changes associated with noninvasive prefronto-cerebellar neuromodulation in obesity. 12 subjects with class I obesity (mean BMI 32.9 kg/m2) underwent a randomized, single-blinded, sham-controlled, crossover study, during which they received transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS; active/sham) aimed at simultaneously enhancing the activity of …

A 2d Tide-Averaged Model For The Long-Term Evolution Of An Idealized Tidal Basin-Inlet-Delta System, Giulio Mariotti, Shamim Murshid
A 2d Tide-Averaged Model For The Long-Term Evolution Of An Idealized Tidal Basin-Inlet-Delta System, Giulio Mariotti, Shamim Murshid
Faculty Publications
We present a model for the morphodynamics of tidal basin-inlet-delta systems at the centennial time scales. Tidal flow is calculated through a friction dominated model, with a semi-empirical correction to account for the advection of momentum. Transport of non-cohesive sediment (sand) is simulated through tidal dispersion, i.e., without explicitly resolving sediment advection. Sediment is also transported downslope through a bed elevation diffusion process. The model is compared to a high-resolution tide-resolving model (Delft3D) with good agreement for different hydrodynamic and sedimentary settings. The model has low sensitivity with respect to temporal and spatial discretization. For the same spatial resolution, the …

The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 6: War And Peace, Sex And Violence, Jan M. Ziolkowski
The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 6: War And Peace, Sex And Violence, Jan M. Ziolkowski
Juggling for Mary
This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.
Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before …
Circumventing Spatio-Numeric Biases Through Non-Numeric Assessments Of Perceived Causal Strength, Daniel William Czarnowski
Circumventing Spatio-Numeric Biases Through Non-Numeric Assessments Of Perceived Causal Strength, Daniel William Czarnowski
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Knowledge of cause and effect allows individuals to meaningfully interpret the events they perceive in the world, and the understanding of causality is thought to be grounded in the understanding of forces (Wolf, Ritter, & Holmes, 2014). Previous research has linked handedness with both the ability to exert force (e.g., Linkenauger et al., 2005) and causal learning (e.g., Goedert & Czarnowski, 2017). Historically, number lines have been used to assess causality, but because handedness has a strong spatial element, SNARC effects may influence judgments (Fias, 1996). The current experiment replicates previous work by Goedert and Czarnowski (2017) but changes the …
