Resident And Facility Factors Associated With Rehospitalization From Skilled Nursing Facilities, Angelina M. Flores-Montoya, Mark B. Parshall, Marie L. Lobo, Stephen H.A. Hernandez, Christine A. Mueller

Nursing ETDs

ABSTRACT

Older adults often require short-term nursing home care after an acute hospital stay to receive skilled nursing or rehabilitation services. Rehospitalization after a skilled nursing facility (SNF) admission is a potential indicator of poor nursing home quality that is associated with substantial risks of complications and increased costs of care. This study examined resident and facility factors associated with 30-day rehospitalizations during a one-year study period from SNFs in New Mexico. The Minimum Data Set 3.0 was used to explore resident factors and Nursing Home Compare data was used for facility factors. Among residents admitted to the SNF from …

Queer Identity Construction In Benjamin Alire Sáenz’S Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe, Frank Ur Dec 2018

Queer Identity Construction In Benjamin Alire Sáenz’S Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe, Frank Ur

Senior Capstone Theses

Young Adult Literature has been consistently growing in popularity within recent years for its exploration of various topics such as LGBTQ Identity. Specifically, this canon of literature has begun the inclusive process of portraying minority voices and their navigation of queer identity. In this essay I explore Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s young adult novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Specifically, I explore the novel's main character and narrator Aristotle Mendoza. I move to examine the characteristics of machismo, heteronormativity, and internalized homophobia to analyze how Aristotle’s identity is at first made up by these characteristics and how …

Geochronology is essential in the geosciences. It is used to resolve the durations and rates of earth processes, as well as test causative relationships among events. Such data are increasingly required to conduct cutting-edge, transformative, earth-science research. The growing need for geochronology is accompanied by strong demand to enhance the ability of labs to meet this pressure and to increase community awareness of how these data are produced and interpreted. For example, a 2015 National Science Foundation (NSF) report on opportunities and challenges for U.S. geochronology research noted: "While there has never been a time when users have had greater …

Financial Well-Being In Low- And Moderate-Income Households: How Does It Compare To The General Population?, Sicong Sun, Olga Kondratjeva, Stephen P. Roll, Mathieu Despard, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Social Policy Institute Research

Research has increasingly shed light on the precariousness of many households’ financial situations. For example, a large national survey showed that 41 percent of adults lack sufficient liquidity to cover even a modest $400 emergency without taking on debt or selling an asset;1 a problem that is exacerbated for lower-income households.2 Compounding this issue is the fact that financial shocks, such as the loss of income or a major car repair, are common; 60 percent of U.S. households reported a shock in the prior year at a median cost of $2,000.3

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

1. Species interactions are integral to ecological community function, and the structure of species interactions has repercussions for the consequences of species extinctions. Few studies have examined the role of environmental factors in controlling species interaction networks across time.

2. We examined variation in plant–grasshopper network structural properties in response to three major grassland drivers: periodic fire, ungulate grazing and climate.

3. We sequenced a plant barcoding gene from extracted grasshopper gut contents to characterize diets of 26 grasshopper species. Resulting grasshopper species’ diets were combined with long‐term plant and grasshopper surveys to assemble plant–grasshopper networks across 13–19 years for …

The Undergraduate That Could: Crafting A Collaborative Student Training Program, Jennifer L.A. Whelan, Jared Andrew Rex

Staff publications

Since the mid-19th century, student worker programs have been an integral component of academic libraries, and the evolution of the profession has put more students, even undergraduates, into positions with greater responsibility, raising questions about the level of expertise of which undergraduate students are capable. The authors address these questions through the lens of the collaborative redevelopment of two distinct library student worker programs at a small liberal arts college. Included is a discussion of successes and challenges, as well as a consideration of the benefits of a “cross-library” support system in developing such a program.

Rare Helium-Bearing Compound Feo2he Stabilized At Deep-Earth Conditions, Jurong Zhang, Jian Lv, Hefei Li, Xiaolei Feng, Cheng Lu, Simon A. T. Redferm, Hanyu Liu, Changfeng Chen, Yanming Ma

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

There is compelling geochemical evidence for primordial helium trapped in Earth’s lower mantle, but the origin and nature of the helium source remain elusive due to scarce knowledge on viable helium-bearing compounds that are extremely rare. Here we explore materials physics underlying this prominent challenge. Our structure searches in conjunction with first-principles energetic and thermodynamic calculations uncover a remarkable helium-bearing compound FeO2He at high pressure-temperature conditions relevant to the core-mantle boundary. Calculated sound velocities consistent with seismic data validate FeO2He as a feasible constituent in ultralow velocity zones at the lowermost mantle. These mutually corroborating findings establish the first and …

Inclined Massive Planets In A Protoplanetary Disc: Gap Opening, Disc Breaking, And Observational Signatures, Zhaohuan Zhu Dec 2018

Inclined Massive Planets In A Protoplanetary Disc: Gap Opening, Disc Breaking, And Observational Signatures, Zhaohuan Zhu

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

We carry out 3D hydrodynamical simulations to study planet–disc interactions for inclined high-mass planets, focusing on the disc’s secular evolution induced by the planet. We find that, when the planet is massive enough and the induced gap is deep enough, the disc inside the planet’s orbit breaks from the outer disc. The inner and outer discs precess around the system’s total angular momentum vector independently at different precession rates, which causes significant disc misalignment. We derive the analytical formulae, which are also verified numerically, for: (1) the relationship between the planet mass and the depth/width of the induced gap, (2) …

Lower Limb Joint Angle Variability And Dimensionality Are Different In Stairmill Climbing And Treadmill Walking, Peter C. Raffalt, Srikant Vallabhajosula, Jessica Renz, Mukul Mukherjee, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

The present study tested if the quadratic relationship which exists between stepping frequency and gait dynamics in walking can be generalized to stairmill climbing. To accomplish this, we investigated the joint angle dynamics and variability during continuous stairmill climbing at stepping frequencies both above and below the preferred stepping frequency (PSF). Nine subjects performed stairmill climbing at 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% PSF and treadmill walking at preferred walking speed during which sagittal hip, knee and ankle angles were extracted. Joint angle dynamics were quantified by the largest Lyapunov exponent (LyE) and correlation dimension (CoD). Joint angle variability was …

Whither The Functional Parent? Revisiting Equitable Parenthood Doctrines In Light Of Same-Sex Parents’ Increased Access To Obtaining Formal Legal Parent Status, Jessica Feinberg Dec 2018

Whither The Functional Parent? Revisiting Equitable Parenthood Doctrines In Light Of Same-Sex Parents’ Increased Access To Obtaining Formal Legal Parent Status, Jessica Feinberg

Brooklyn Law Review

Equitable parenthood doctrines generally provide rights relating to visitation or custody to an individual who has functioned as a child’s parent, but who is not recognized as a formal parent under existing law. These doctrines have played an essential role in protecting non-biological parents raising children within same-sex relationships, a group which historically has been excluded from the traditional avenues to establishing formal legal parent status based upon biology, marriage, and adoption. Over the past thirty years, a number of jurisdictions have adopted equitable parenthood doctrines to avoid the significant harm to children and unfairness that result from treating non-biological …

Stimulating Interethnic Contact In Kosovo: The Role Of Social Identity Complexity And Distinctiveness Threat, Edona Maloku, Belle Derks, Colette Van Laar, Naomi Ellemers

Articles

The positive effects of intergroup contact on prejudice reduction have been widely validated by now. However, the potential of contact for intergroup relations is only available when there is readiness to have contact with outgroup members to begin with. In two correlational studies with the main ethnic groups in postconflict Kosovo, Albanian majority (Study 1, N = 221) and Serb minority (Study 2, N = 110), we examine how social identity complexity mechanism and distinctiveness threat contribute to predicting more readiness to have contact with outgroup members. As the establishment of a new national identity unfolds, we show that while …

Assessment Of Cooling And Heat Transfer Properties Of Quenchants With Matlab, Lemmy Meekisho, Rosa L. Simencio Otero, Jônatas M. Viscaino, D. Scott Mackenzie, George Totten, Lauralice C.F. Canale

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

There is ongoing interest for evaluating the potential of renewable base stocks, such as vegetable oils, to replace petroleum oils as metal quenchants. Perhaps the most critical part of this process is characterizing and comparing the cooling and heat transfer performance of potential quenchant candidates. In this work, cooling curves of two vegetable oils, palm oil and canola oil, were obtained along with a commercially available conventional and an accelerated petroleum quenchant using the so-called Tensi multiple thermocouple probe, with emphasis on the center probe emulating a small probe concept. The lumped-parameter approach was implemented in the MATLAB environment (Mathworks …

Biogeographic Patterns Among Seed-Bearing And Spore-Bearing Plants Across The California Channel Islands, Benjamin E. Carter, C. Matt Guilliams Dec 2018

Biogeographic Patterns Among Seed-Bearing And Spore-Bearing Plants Across The California Channel Islands, Benjamin E. Carter, C. Matt Guilliams

Western North American Naturalist

Spore-bearing and seed-bearing plants differ in their ability to colonize islands from mainland sources. To assess the importance of these differences, we investigated patterns of species richness and species composition for the native bryophyte, fern, and seed plant floras of the California Channel Islands. Native richness was regressed against island area, maximum elevation, distance to mainland, distance to nearest propagule source along prevailing wind trajectories, and latitude for the 3 plant groups. Ordinations, Mantel tests, randomization tests, and an analysis partitioning beta diversity into turnover and nestedness components were used to identify similarities and differences in species composition across the …
