Because supermarkets are a critical part of the community food environment, the purpose of this paper is to examine the association between accessibility to the supermarket where participants were surveyed, frequency of shopping at the supermarket, and self-reported and objectively-assessed fruit and vegetable consumption. Accessibility was assessed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) measured distance and multiple versions of the modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI), including a localized road network buffer version. Frequency of shopping was assessed using self-report. The National Cancer Institute Fruit and Vegetable screener was used to calculate daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Skin carotenoids were …

Quantifying The Effects Of Transporting Psats On The Swimming Performance Of Juvenile Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus), Charles James Mcguigan
Open Access Theses
Various types of tags are used across a wide range of teleost and elasmobranch species to collect valuable information on life-history, behavior, migration, and habitat utilization. However, a limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the costs associated with transporting these tags. Young-adult mahi-mahi (25-35 cm fork length) were tagged with miniature pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) to assess the impacts of tagging on various movement parameters in a two- part experiment. Using swim tunnel respirometry, this study revealed significant reductions in the critical and optimal swimming speeds of 10% and 24%, respectively (p0.05) between any of the …

Natural Stability Of Pollutants And Their Ability To Decompose Inecological Conditions, H. B. Yunusov, V. S. Kolodey
Bulletin of the Agrarian Science of Uzbekistan
In the given paper, we analyze various factors of pollution of the ecological environment by pollutants and toxicants. The concepts of the lifetime of pollutants in the natural environment (air, water, soil and organism) are determined, and the results of experimental data are presented. The problems of distribution of pollutants at local, regional and global scales are considered. On the basis of the literature analysis, they need to continue research into the study of ingredient contamination of the habitat which has been identified. The stability and duration of the presence of pollutants in the natural environment is an important problem, …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Remnant populations of Betula papyrifera have persisted in the Great Plains after the Wisconsin Glaciation along the Niobrara River Valley, Nebraska. Population health has declined in recent years, and has been hypothesized to be due to climate change. We used dendrochronological techniques to assess the response of B. papyrifera to microclimate (1950-2014), and satellite imagery [Landsat 5 TM (1985-2011) and MODIS (2000-2014)] derived NDVI as a proxy for population health. Growing-season streamflow and precipitation were positively correlated with raw and standardized tree-ring widths and basal area increment increase. Increasing winter and spring temperatures were unfavorable for tree growth while increasing …

2018-2019 Borders and Boundaries
What do you get when you toss together nine jugglers, 80 apples, and four crockery sets? “Smashed,” a tea party you’ll never forget, created by Gandini Juggling, the thinking person’s jugglers. Nine well-dressed, perfectly respectable young people take the stage and, under the guise of a quaint afternoon tea, engage in the dark art of juggling. Inspired by the work of Pina Bausch, the Gandinis display a virtuosic blend of skills, precision, and theatricality that leaves the audience breathless, while the performers remain as cool as cucumber sandwiches. Created in 1992 by renowned juggler Sean Gandini and champion gymnast Kati …

Recruiting Process: The Decision Is Now, Joshua Michels
Sport Management Undergraduate
The college athletic recruiting process is one cluttered with many different factors. Studies have analyzed institutional and social factors impacting a prospective student-athletes’ recruitment process. However, little research has explored recruiting from an athlete’s perspective on how they make their college decision. This study aimed to investigate the most influential factors in a Division III student-athlete’s college decision based on the college recruiting process. The purpose of conducting this research is to highlight and identify the factors that student athletes consider in regards to their recruiting process, and the school they later choose to attend and continue their athletic careers. …

Influences On The Formation Of Coach-Athlete Relationships, Anthony Rinaldo
Sport Management Undergraduate
For a team to be successful, coaches and players need to have a good relationship. Without this relationship there can be tension within the team that hinders success. The many factors that impact the formation of these relationships depend on both the coach and the athlete. From the data it shows that the athletes that were part of the sample, their motivation and other factors were affected by the poor relationships that were built. If there can be information on what affects the relationship, future coaches and athletic directors can use this information to their advantage.
Exploring Sport Related Sexual Assault On Twitter, Riley O'Brien
Exploring Sport Related Sexual Assault On Twitter, Riley O'Brien
Sport Management Undergraduate
Sport related sexual assault has been prevalent in society. For the victims, there are limited avenues to cope with the issues they have faced in the aftermath of sexual assault. At collegiate sport organizations, there seems to be a disconnect between what is right and wrong, especially regarding sexual assault. This study navigates the rough waters of sexual assault and provides institutions with information regarding social media once there is a sexual assault case. Using Twitter, this study will search to find variables that are beneficial to victims and sport institutions alike that will help their story reach the maximum …

Measuring Perceived Corporate Hypocrisy: Scale Development In The Context Of U.S. Retail Employees, Saheli Goswami, Jung Ha-Brookshire, Wes Bonifay
Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications
Despite an increasing amount of research on perceived corporate hypocrisy (PCH), limited research has investigated PCH among employees. Particularly, the literature lacked a valid instrument for estimating employees’ PCH, even though employees experience severe consequences for PCH. To address this gap, a scale was developed to measure employees’ PCH, using a three-stage Item Response Theory modeling approach. After a series of qualitative studies and six quantitative scale-development iterations, PCH was found to be a unidimensional construct represented by the perceived lack of morality, perceived control breach, double standards, and a value‒behavior gap. Further, the nine-item PCH scale was confirmed to …

Over the last decade, the efforts toward unraveling the complex interplay between the brain, body, and environment have set a promising line of research that utilizes neuroscience to study human performance in natural work contexts such as aviation. Thus, a relatively new discipline called neuroergonomics is holding the promise of studying the neural mechanisms underlying human performance in pursuit of both theoretical and practical insights. In this work, we utilized a neuroergonomic approach by combining insights from ecological psychology and embodied cognition to study flight expertise. Specifically, we focused on the Mirror Neuron system as a key correlate for understanding …

Modernizing Local Service Delivery Systems: Local Efficiency Assessment Program, Norman Walzer, Andy Blanke
Reports, Whitepapers, Articles, and Other Publications
With rural governments in mind, CGS Senior Research Scholar Norman Walzer and Research Associate Andy Blanke have developed Guidebook to Modernizing Local Service Delivery Systems, where they discuss the Local Efficiency Assessment Program (LEAP), and the Local Government Efficiency Assessment Dashboard. Concerns about rising costs of local public services, property tax increases, the large number of governments in Illinois, and stagnant or shrinking populations have caused local public officials especially in rural areas to re-examine arrangements for providing public services. Existing delivery systems started under substantially different travel and communications environments. County populations are now smaller in many instances than …

Lapses in the graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis and side effects of current standard care following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) call for novel regimens. Traditional approaches targeting T cells showed limited success in preventing acute GVHD (aGVHD). System medicine showed promising results treating complex diseases such as sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Adapting established network pharmacology analysis methods, we aimed to develop novel integrative regimens to prevent aGVHD. Our network pharmacology analysis predicted that Xuebijing injection (XBJ) targets a series of key node proteins in aGVHD network. It also unveiled that Salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen), an herb in Xuebijing …
A Stochastic Cellular Automaton Simulation Of Chemical Oscillations In Small Systems, Yue Hu, Jenny Xie
A Stochastic Cellular Automaton Simulation Of Chemical Oscillations In Small Systems, Yue Hu, Jenny Xie
Faculty Research and Scholarship
We propose a stochastic cellular automaton method to simulate chemical reactions in small systems. Unlike the standard Gillespie method, which simulates chemical reactions with a few thousand molecules reacting with each other but without spatial considerations, our systems are divided into independent cells, each containing only a few molecules. Our simulation of the Brusselator produces chemical oscillations that agree extremely well with solutions to deterministic rate equations, and we can see strong oscillations in systems with as few as 10 cells. We are able to study several factors that affect the robustness of these small chemical oscillators: system size, spatial …
