Individual Differences In Creative Cognition, Sarah K. Craig Dec 2018

Individual Differences In Creative Cognition, Sarah K. Craig

Theses and Dissertations

Creativity is increasing in value worldwide, but the processes underlying various creative abilities remain ambiguous. The most frequently used assessments of creativity (i.e., divergent thinking tasks; creative problem-solving tasks) differ in surface features and are also rarely examined together. These inconsistencies, in addition to mixed findings in the literature, have caused considerable debate among creativity researchers concerning the particular roles of independent or dual processes that lead to success on different creativity tests. The present study expounded upon these mixed findings using a factor analytic method. The results indicated that individual differences in working memory and fluency ability impact performance …

Influence Of Winter Annual Cover Crops And Insect Management Strategies On Insect Pests Of Mississippi Soybean, Daniel Adam Whalen Dec 2018

Influence Of Winter Annual Cover Crops And Insect Management Strategies On Insect Pests Of Mississippi Soybean, Daniel Adam Whalen

Theses and Dissertations

An increasing cultural practice in soybean, Glycine max (L.), production is the use of winter annual cover crops before planting. Species of grasses, legumes, and forbs are planted for many agronomic purposes during the fall months. In the spring, cover crops are killed and soybean planted into the residue. When the termination of the cover crops is delayed for longer lasting benefits, insect pest issues can arise. The movement of insect pests from cover crops to subsequent cash crops happens through a connection known as the “Green Bridge”. Pests found in cover crops such as the pea leaf weevil, Sitona …

An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe Dec 2018

An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations

Early sensation novels such as Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret, and Ellen Wood’s East Lynne use the eighteenth-century notion of sentiment in very distinct manners. These novels demonstrate a perspective in transition regarding sentimentality in how they apply sentimental qualities to very specific character types. Some characters are extremely sentimental, whereas others appear completely void of emotion and are even described as automata. These sensation novels even feature sentimental journeys and objects, as well as allusions to sentimental novels such as Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey and Henry Mackenzie’s Man of Feeling. The …

An Assessment Of State Equations Of Air For Modeling A Blast Load Simulator, Gustavo Emmanuelli Dec 2018

An Assessment Of State Equations Of Air For Modeling A Blast Load Simulator, Gustavo Emmanuelli

Theses and Dissertations

When an explosive detonates above ground, air is principally the only material involved in the transmission of shock waves that can result in damage. Hydrodynamic codes that simulate these explosions use equations of state (EOSs) for modeling the behavior of air at these high-pressure, high-velocity conditions. An investigation is made into the effect that the EOS selection for air has on the calculated overpressure-time waveforms of a blast event. Specifically, the ideal gas, Doan-Nickel, and SESAME EOSs in the SHAMRC code were used to reproduce experiments conducted at the Blast Load Simulator (BLS), a large-scale shock tube operated by the …

Temperature Prediction Of Bioinspired Leaves-On-Branchlet Carbon Nanostructure Based Electric Double Layer Capacitors Under Constant Current, Karnpiwat Tantratian

Theses and Dissertations

The spatiotemporal evolution of temperature of leaves-on-branchlet carbon based electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) under imposed constant current was studied using a continuum thermal model. The hot spot aggregated at the tips of graphene petals (GPs), particularly at the high concave surface, at the beginning of the charging step. As the charging proceeded, the overall temperature rose continuously, and the temperature distribution was likely uniform throughout the graphene petals due to an increasingly uniform distribution of ions on GPs surfaces. To elucidate the effects of electrode geometry on the change of temperature, several simple two-dimensional structures were also simulated in …

The Effects Of Dual Enrollment On An Institution: Student Persistence And Degree Attainment At The Community College, Stacey S. Irwin

Theses and Dissertations

The overall college enrollment rates for young adults have increased over the last several years. While this is promising, a notable amount of students do not attain a degree. This scenario can create major consequences for the United States as global competitiveness requires a workforce that possesses a postsecondary degree. Dual enrollment is a program that has been seen to answer the need for more postsecondary graduates. Despite the robust literature that suggests the positive effects for students who participate in dual enrollment, limited research exists on the effects of dual enrollment on the institution. Therefore, this study attempted to …

Microbial Succession From A Controlled Death Event Following Simulated Mass Mortality, Lindsay K. Harrison Dec 2018

Microbial Succession From A Controlled Death Event Following Simulated Mass Mortality, Lindsay K. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

An increasing trend in mass mortality events (MMEs) has been observed in recent years, leading to an increased study of these events and their causes. Still to be investigated are the immediate and long-term effects of these environmental disturbances. Microbial communities found on and within the carcass are a major contributor to decomposition. With an increased biomass from several carcasses, transfer of these microbes to secondary death events may be affected. For this project, several simulated MMEs were used in conjunction with a secondary death event to observe the effects of transfer between the microbial communities and changes in the …

The Role Of Early Visual Cortex In Global Motion Processing, Marshall L. Green Dec 2018

The Role Of Early Visual Cortex In Global Motion Processing, Marshall L. Green

Theses and Dissertations

Both visual area V1 and the medial temporal (MT) region of the human brain play a role in motion perception. V1 is thought to process "local motion," such as the movement of a single bird flying across a relatively small part of space, while MT is thought to process "global motion," such as the movement of an entire flock of birds flying across the sky. However, recent studies using fMRI to measure human brain activity have identified signals in V1 that appear to be global motion signals, although it is unclear whether these are related to global motion processing or …

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Early B-Cell Development In The Chicken Embryo, Nikhil Krishna Nuthalapati Dec 2018

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Early B-Cell Development In The Chicken Embryo, Nikhil Krishna Nuthalapati

Theses and Dissertations

The chicken bursa of Fabricius is a primary lymphoid tissue important for B-cell development. Our long-term goal is to understand the role of bursal microenvironment in an early B-cell differentiation event initiating repertoire development through immunoglobulin gene-conversion in the chick embryo. We hypothesize that early bursal B-cell differentiation is guided by signals through cytokine receptors. Our theory is based on previous evidence for expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase superfamily members and interleukin receptors in unseparated populations of bursal B-cells and bursal tissue. Knowledge of the expressed genes that are responsible for B-cell differentiation is a prerequisite for understanding the …

Transferability Of Maxent And Expert Opinion Models For American Beaver, Isidro A. Barela

Theses and Dissertations

Modeling habitat suitability is beneficial for management and conservation of a species. Although data-rich models are commonly used, opinion-based models may be a beneficial alternative to estimate suitable habitat locations. Despite the increasing use of habitat models, few studies have linked habitat model covariates (i.e., land cover, weather, and normalized difference vegetation indexes (NDVI)) to demographic parameters. This study evaluates model performance and transferability of maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and expert opinion models for predicting American beaver (Castor canadensis) distribution in the southeastern US. I also investigated the relationship of environmental and habitat model covariates to beaver survival. The model’s predictive …

Understanding How Pin1-Substrate Interactions Modulate Affinity And Inter-Domain Dynamics, Hewa Pathiranalage Dinusha Sanjeewani Jinasena Dec 2018

Understanding How Pin1-Substrate Interactions Modulate Affinity And Inter-Domain Dynamics, Hewa Pathiranalage Dinusha Sanjeewani Jinasena

Theses and Dissertations

Pin1 is an essential peptidyl-prolyl isomerase (PPIase) that catalyzes cis-trans prolyl isomerization in proteins containing phosphorylated serine/threonine-proline motifs (pSer/Thr-Pro). It has an N-terminal binding domain (WW) and a C-terminal PPIase domain. Pin1 targets pSer/Thr-Pro motifs by its WW domain and catalyzes isomerization through its PPIase domain. This dissertation is focused on elucidating the interactions between Pin1/substrate, the inter-domain dynamics upon binding, and the catalytic activity of Pin1 upon binding different substrates. Specifically, we investigated the Pin1-Histone H1 interaction and designed a series of chimeric peptides based on the H1.4 sequence (KATGAApTPKKSAKW). NMR titrations were performed for each peptide using both …

Refining Spawning Protocols For Crappie, Christian A. Shirley

Theses and Dissertations

White Crappie (Pomoxis annularis) and Black Crappie (P. nigromaculatus) are popular North American gamefish; however, frequent fluctuations in year class strength present a management challenge for recreational fisheries. Intensive aquaculture production has the potential to address this challenge through controlled hatchery reproduction for supplemental stocking, but further study is needed to refine and optimize techniques. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of hormone injection timing on latency period and spawning success, examined effective cryopreservation techniques for black-stripe Black Crappie sperm (a preferred hatchery phenotype), and compared simulated spring duration on out-of-season spawning success. Latency period for White Crappie did not …

Detailed Beta-Decay Studies Of Neutron-Rich 74-77ga Isotopes, Umesh Silwal Dec 2018

Detailed Beta-Decay Studies Of Neutron-Rich 74-77ga Isotopes, Umesh Silwal

Theses and Dissertations

The National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC) contains a compilation of information on the beta decays of Gallium isotopes. In the mass range A = 74 to 77, the Germanium daughters lie close to or at the valley of stability leading us to believe the decays would have been well studied. However, closer inspection indicates significant conflict for placement of gamma rays and energy levels between different measurements, especially for upper-lying states. Detailed beta-decay studies for the 74-77Ga isotopes were performed using a high resolution four clover Hyper-Pure Germanium (HPGe) detector system with two beta scintillators in the Holifield Radioactive Ion …

Making A Decision To Retreat, Relate, Or Retaliate: An Examination Of Theoretical Predictors Of Behavioral Responses To Bullying In A High School Setting, Megan Suzanne Stubbs-Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to extend General Strain Theory (GST) to examine prosocial, asocial, and antisocial behavior in response to bullying. In GST, Agnew (1992; 2001; 2013) asserted that negative emotions can lead to criminal or aggressive coping but there are a number of factors that increase or decrease the propensity to respond aggressively (Agnew, 1992; Richman & Leary, 2009). In this dissertation, I examine whether and how rejection (operationalized as bullying victimization) is associated with aggressive responding as opposed to prosocial (e.g., befriending others) or asocial (e.g., avoiding people and social events) responding. This dissertation consists of …
