The Best Interests Of The Child Or The State? The Rights Of The Child In Non-Lpr Cancellation Of Removal, Lizzie Bird Dec 2018

The Best Interests Of The Child Or The State? The Rights Of The Child In Non-Lpr Cancellation Of Removal, Lizzie Bird

Master's Theses

This thesis argues that the United States is failing to fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in its adjudication of the hardship standard in non-LPR cancellation of removal. It is well-documented that the current interpretation of the “exceptional and extremely unusual hardship” standard results in the separation of families and de facto deportation of children, many of whom are U.S. citizens. This thesis contends that this practice is not only unjust, but also unlawful.

First, it argues that the CRC in general and Article 3 (the “best interests” principle) in particular have risen …

It Could Never Last: Why British Sovereignty And Its Influence Since 1945 Resulted In Brexit, Jeffrey Brandt Dec 2018

It Could Never Last: Why British Sovereignty And Its Influence Since 1945 Resulted In Brexit, Jeffrey Brandt

Master's Theses

The EU Referendum of June 2016 marked a watershed moment for the United Kingdom, as it sought to once again reassert its sovereignty and retake its place in the world as an independent state, free from European Union infringement. The British are usually seen as the cussid ones in Europe, stubbornly holding on to their principles and traditions of sovereignty. But why is that? Carefully tracing UK history, particularly from the end of the Second World War to the present day, it becomes understandable why the result of the 2016 referendum should not be quite a surprise. Studying events in …

Non State Sovereignty: A Case Of The European Union, Natalie Murphy Dec 2018

Non State Sovereignty: A Case Of The European Union, Natalie Murphy

Master's Theses

This paper uses the European Union as a case study to look at sovereignty and the formation of a new type of sovereignty which both diverges and interacts with existing state sovereignty. The European Union is developing a new form of non-state sovereignty which diverges from traditional conceptions in three ways: The EU is a non-state actor; unlike in the past, a body is operating with and exercising sovereign rights outside of the nation-state formation. Secondly, the sovereignty of both the European Union and its member states overlaps. Both maintain exclusive responsibilities often tied to the state, but with the …

Micrat: A Novel Algorithm For Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks Using Time Series Gene Expression Data, Bei Yang, Yaohui Xu, Andrew Maxwell, Wonryull Koh, Ping Gong, Chaoyang Zhang

Faculty Publications

Background: Reconstruction of gene regulatory networks (GRNs), also known as reverse engineering of GRNs, aims to infer the potential regulation relationships between genes. With the development of biotechnology, such as gene chip microarray and RNA-sequencing, the high-throughput data generated provide us with more opportunities to infer the gene-gene interaction relationships using gene expression data and hence understand the underlying mechanism of biological processes. Gene regulatory networks are known to exhibit a multiplicity of interaction mechanisms which include functional and non-functional, and linear and non-linear relationships. Meanwhile, the regulatory interactions between genes and gene products are not spontaneous since various …

Exploration Of Factors Affecting Single Black Mothers' Facilitation Of Father-Child Relationships, Shawn'ta Gardner Dec 2018

Exploration Of Factors Affecting Single Black Mothers' Facilitation Of Father-Child Relationships, Shawn'ta Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Literature shows that when fathers are involved in their children’s lives, their children have better outcomes and neighborhoods are safer. However, father involvement is often limited in situations where the father is a non-residential parent. Previous research has indicated that there are several factors that may influence a custodial mother’s facilitation of the father-child relationship. These factors may include the existing co-parenting relationship between mother and father and the mother’s perception of the father’s appreciation of her mothering of the child. Particularly in low-income families, the struggle to simply meet economic demands overrides a custodial parent’s desire to facilitate the …

Effect Of The Spray Droplet Size And Herbicide Physiochemical Properties On Pre-Emergence Herbicide Efficacy For Weed Control In Soybeans, Pedro Henrique Urach Ferreira

Theses and Dissertations

Field studies conducted in Missouri and Mississippi, in 2017 and 2018, respectively, indicated no droplet size effect on PRE herbicide efficacy, regardless of the herbicide, weed, soil, crop residue and weather conditions during spraying. Nozzle type enhanced herbicide efficacy for one location and herbicide. The TTI60 dual fan nozzle increased pendimethalin weed control, up to 91%, in a high organic matter (OM) soil with large clods and substantial weed pressure. Pendimethalin efficacy was reduced under high OM soils (> 2%) while metribuzin efficacy was reduced under low OM (< 0.7%), low cation exchange capacity (<13.1%) soils and 12.2 mm of rain three days after application. The greenhouse studies indicated that increasing crop residue levels reduced velvetleaf control by 7%. Simulated rainfall eight days after herbicide application decreased johnsongrass dry weight reductions by 29% in comparison to two day rainfall.

Theses and Dissertations

Edwardsiella ictaluri causes enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), one of the most important bacterial diseases of farmed channel catfish in the USA. Use of live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) is an effective strategy for combating mortalities in catfish farms. Our research group has developed three live attenuated E. ictaluri strains [EiΔevpB, EiΔgcvPΔsdhCΔfrdA (ESC-NDKL1), and EiΔhemRΔfrdAΔsdhC (triple-hemR)] that provide various levels of protection against ESC. However, the protective mechanisms of these vaccine candidates are mostly unknown. The overall objective of my study was to investigate protective mechanisms of these LAVs. To accomplish this, catfish fry were immersion challenged with EiΔevpB, ESC-NDKL1, and …

A Functional Developmental Genomics Analysis Of Rin4 And Exocyst Genes As They Relate To Glycine Max Defense To The Plant Parasitic Nematode Heterodera Glycines Infection, Keshav Sharma Dec 2018

A Functional Developmental Genomics Analysis Of Rin4 And Exocyst Genes As They Relate To Glycine Max Defense To The Plant Parasitic Nematode Heterodera Glycines Infection, Keshav Sharma

Theses and Dissertations

The initial interaction of vesicle and the target membrane prior to their fusion is called vesicle tethering, a process mediated by an octameric protein complex called the exocyst. The exocyst connects vesicles and binds them to phosphatidylinositol 4, 5-biphosphate (PI (4,5) P2), located on the plasma membrane. The exocyst complex is located at the target site, helping to prepare the soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein (SNAP) receptor (SNARE) for docking and subsequent release of vesicular contents after fusion. The importance of the exocyst in cellular processes is inevitable since it performs central roles in exocytosis thereby inducing SNARE-mediated membrane …

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Understand Speciation And Solvation Structure Of Common Herbicides, Zachary W. Windom

Theses and Dissertations

The application of commercial herbicide restricts weed growth and significantly improves control over crop vitality and yield. Despite their utility in the agriculture sector, herbicides have the potential to contaminate local water sources. To minimize environmental impacts, the development of efficient separation processes to clean-up contaminated water bodies is necessary. However, complex speciation and conformational flexibility in the condensed phase poses a significant challenge. In this work, we investigate structure and speciation of three common organic herbicides (glyphosate, atrazine, and metolachlor) in aqueous solution. We employ the PBE-D3 density functional to perform ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the …

Use Of Co-Immunoprecipitations And 2d Gel Electrophoresis To Identify Protein-Protein Interactions Of Maturase K, Lauren Angello Dec 2018

Use Of Co-Immunoprecipitations And 2d Gel Electrophoresis To Identify Protein-Protein Interactions Of Maturase K, Lauren Angello

Honors Theses

Maturase K (MatK) is the only group II intron encoded protein in the chloroplast of land plants. Maturases are prokaryotic enzymes that catalyze formation of the lariat structure needed for intron removal from precursor RNAs. The chloroplast maturase MatK, is a descendant of prokaryotic maturases, however, unlike its prokaryotic relatives, MatK is thought to catalyze excision of, not only its own intron, but also the introns of other group II introns in the plastome. Similar to the multiprotein and snRNA spliceosomal complex of the nucleus, it is postulated that MatK is not working alone to excise these introns but most …
