The Struggle Is Eternal, Joseph R. Fitzgerald Dec 2018

The Struggle Is Eternal, Joseph R. Fitzgerald

Civil Rights

Many prominent and well-known figures greatly impacted the civil rights movement, but one of the most influential and unsung leaders of that period was Gloria Richardson. As the leader of the Cambridge Nonviolent Action Committee (CNAC), a multifaceted liberation campaign formed to target segregation and racial inequality in Cambridge, Maryland, Richardson advocated for economic justice and tactics beyond nonviolent demonstrations. Her philosophies and strategies—including her belief that black people had a right to self–defense—were adopted, often without credit, by a number of civil rights and black power leaders and activists.

Identifying Inclusive Practices On U.S. University Campuses That Create Engagement For Diverse Populations, Brandon Tatum Dec 2018

Identifying Inclusive Practices On U.S. University Campuses That Create Engagement For Diverse Populations, Brandon Tatum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interactions between diversity and inclusion have been incompletely studied on U.S. college campuses. Previous researchers have also demonstrated an incomplete understanding of these two constructs, resulting in uneven attempts to create inclusion on college campuses. Diversity and inclusion research on college life is needed because inclusion is relatively new and unexplored, student diversity in U.S. higher education is increasing, and practical models and programs for enhancing campus inclusion are lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify best practices and student attitudes regarding inclusion and group memberships with Generation Z and Millennial college students in the United States, …

Mineralogy, Petrology, And Geochemistry Of The Unique Silica-Rich Ungrouped Achondrite Northwest Africa 11575, Mya Ann Habermann

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

We report here on a unique, newly discovered, silica-rich ungrouped achondrite Northwest Africa 11575 (NWA 11575). NWA 11575 is one of four known silica-rich ungrouped achondrites, presenting evidence for igneous processes resulting in evolved compositions early in the history of the solar system. It is unique from the other silica-rich ungrouped achondrites in that it has pyroxene compositional trends matching those of lunar samples and martian meteorites; contains quartz and potassium feldspar; and contains oxygen, hydrogen, and chromium isotopes that are similar to those of LL chondrites. Together, these four silica-rich ungrouped achondrites provide evidence for evolved compositions resulting from …

Writing For An Audience: The Griselda Translations, Christine Houchins Dec 2018

Writing For An Audience: The Griselda Translations, Christine Houchins

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

An author’s purpose in translating a work was to shape the literary piece into a framework that would best connect with his intended audience. This essay focuses on the moral and characterization changes within the Griselda tale throughout medieval translations. Giovanni Boccaccio wrote The Decameron X, 10 highlighting the instability of his Italian vernacular in order to undermine authorial intentionality, thereby presenting his work as a matter of interpretation. Francesco Petrarch wrote the Tale of Griselda in Latin to maintain his reputation as a public intellectual with the elite and embedded a religious moral within the tale. Finally, Geoffrey Chaucer …

First-Generation Students: Who Are They? Why Are They At Risk? How Can We Promote Their Success?, Joe Cuseo Dec 2018

First-Generation Students: Who Are They? Why Are They At Risk? How Can We Promote Their Success?, Joe Cuseo

eJournal of Public Affairs

Approximately one third of all undergraduate students in the United States today are first-generation students—that is, students with parents whose highest level of education was high school. This article examines the characteristics of first-generation students, identifies reasons why they are at risk for attrition, and offers specific strategies for improving their rate of college completion.

Improving College Outcomes For First-Generation Students, Janet K. Holt, Laura B. Winter Dec 2018

Improving College Outcomes For First-Generation Students, Janet K. Holt, Laura B. Winter

eJournal of Public Affairs

In this article, the authors describe a multi-site case study of five 4-year postsecondary institutions in Missouri that used evidence-based strategies to support first-generation students in their efforts to persist in and complete college. In the case study, data from qualitative interviews of university administrators in academic and student support services, as well as focus groups of underrepresented students, were analyzed and coded using grounded theory. The resulting themes were compared to prior research on first-generation students, resulting in three broad areas of evidence-based practice with potential to increase college success for first-generation students. These institutional practices included providing (a) …

The First-Year Seminar: A Program Evaluation Of Students’ Public-Affairs Awareness, Yasuko Kanamori, Tracey A. Glaessgen, Jeffrey H. D. Cornelius-White

eJournal of Public Affairs

Similar to the public-welfare aim of many universities, Missouri State University (MSU) was granted a specific statewide public affairs mission in 1995 comprising three pillars: community engagement, cultural competence, and ethical leadership. Since the implementation of this mission, the university has engaged in various efforts to promote and foster public-affairs awareness among students, including through its first-year seminar (FYS). This article details a study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the FYS in enhancing students’ public-affairs awareness. The researchers solicited input from students in the first and last weeks of their first semester at MSU using the Public Affairs Scale–Short …

Land Mollusks Of The California Channel Islands: An Overview Of Diversity, Populations, And Conservation Status, Charles A. Drost, Jeffrey C. Nekola, Barry Roth, Timothy A. Pearce Dec 2018

Land Mollusks Of The California Channel Islands: An Overview Of Diversity, Populations, And Conservation Status, Charles A. Drost, Jeffrey C. Nekola, Barry Roth, Timothy A. Pearce

Western North American Naturalist

The land snails and slugs have the highest level of endemism among all major animal groups on the California Channel Islands, with nearly 75% of the native terrestrial species confined to one or more of the 8 islands. In spite of this endemism, and in spite of the rarity of some species, the snails and slugs are one of the most poorly known groups. We present the first comprehensive overview of the land mollusk fauna of the Channel Islands, along with the results of recent intensive inventory studies. Surveys on San Clemente Island have increased the number of land mollusk …

Improving Nursing Communication Outcomes Through The Tell-Us Card, Brittney Pilker, Jillian Cule, Laura Le, Nina Park, Jeffrey Salao, Maricarmen Reyes Dec 2018

Improving Nursing Communication Outcomes Through The Tell-Us Card, Brittney Pilker, Jillian Cule, Laura Le, Nina Park, Jeffrey Salao, Maricarmen Reyes

Master's Projects and Capstones

Nursing communication plays a pivotal role in patient-centered care. However, statistics have shown that failures in communication exist in more than 20% of all hospital settings (Sethi & Rani, 2017). Within the explored microsystem, a gap in patient communication was identified through the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys. Reports revealed that the microsystem was performing at 69%, which is 11% below the national average for nursing communication (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2018). After performing a microsystem assessment, there was a measurable communication opportunity between the patients and nurses. It was determined that …

Multilingual Museums: A Proposal To Increase Linguistic Diversity In Contemporary Art Museums, Jennifer Cha Dec 2018

Multilingual Museums: A Proposal To Increase Linguistic Diversity In Contemporary Art Museums, Jennifer Cha

Master's Projects and Capstones

The U.S. population is becoming more ethnically, racially, and linguistically diverse. It is estimated that by the year 2050, the U.S. will shift to a majority-minority population, meaning that the total minority population will become the majority of the U.S. population. But while the U.S. is diversifying, the current museum visitorship demographic is not representative of or on track to measure up to these changes in the future. If museums are valuable civic spaces with several associated health, social, and educational benefits, and a large percentage of the population have low-English proficiency and cannot access the information, then there is …

Black Networks In Smart Cities, Shaibal Chakrabarty Dec 2018

Black Networks In Smart Cities, Shaibal Chakrabarty

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present the Black Networks solution to protect both the data and the metadata for mobile ad-hoc Internet of Things (IoT) networks in Smart Cities. IoT networks are gaining popularity with billions of deployed nodes, and increasingly carrying mission-critical data, whose compromise can lead to catastrophic consequences. IoT nodes are resource-constrained and often exist within insecure environments, making them vulnerable to a broad range of active and passive attacks. Black IoT networks are designed to mitigate multiple communication-based attacks by encrypting the data and the metadata, within a communication frame or packet, while remaining compatible with the …
