Extreme Hbl Behavior Of Markarian 501 During 2012, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.
Physical Sciences Publications
Aims. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength emission from Markarian 501 (Mrk 501), quantify the energy-dependent variability, study the potential multiband correlations, and describe the temporal evolution of the broadband emission within leptonic theoretical scenarios.
Methods. We organized a multiwavelength campaign to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instruments on board the Swift and Fermi spacecraft, and the telescopes operated by the GASP-WEBT collaboration.
Results. Mrk 501 showed a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray flux above 0.2 TeV of …
Can You Hear Me? An Exploration Of Interracial Coupling Between African Americans And White Americans From The Perspective Of The Black Woman, Monica Branch
Student Scholarship
black-white racial tension is a sociological agent that permeates almost all forms of implicit biases when it comes to this specific race relation. The perspective of the black woman remains a highly suppressed viewpoint in the conversation of interracial dating between black and white people. The history of black and white interaction serves as a critical social basis for the dynamic of this country culturally, politically and economically. Society projects the common discourse that the United States (and the rest of the word) lives in a “post-racial” society, and that color, specifically black people, are not seen, but regarded as …
Transient Seepage In A Variably Saturated Levee: Laboratory Testing, Field Monitoring And Numerical Modeling, Xavier Arnaldo Rivera-Hernandez
Transient Seepage In A Variably Saturated Levee: Laboratory Testing, Field Monitoring And Numerical Modeling, Xavier Arnaldo Rivera-Hernandez
Theses and Dissertations
Several hydraulic loadings impose earthen levees to time-dependent variably saturated seepage conditions. The main objective of this study is to improve the analysis of levees under transient seepage with the use of unsaturated soil mechanics. An extensive set of laboratory testing, field monitoring and numerical modeling are performed to analyze a silty sand setback levee located near Seattle, WA. In-situ data obtained from field monitoring are used to monitor suction and effective stress within the levee’s embankment and foundation over the past two years. Soil samples taken from the site are used to perform index, water retention, and unsaturated multi-stage …

The Human Right To Science And Foundational Technologies, Andrea Boggio, Calvin W. L. Ho
History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles
Feeney et al. (2018) make a valid argument for restrictions on the exclusivity of foundational technologies such as CRISPR. The issue of balancing intellectual property right with access to scientific and technological advancements is certainly not new. In our commentary, we argue that the human right to science offers a more concrete basis for governments to balance their competing commitments in promoting scientific development on the one hand, and ensuring benefit-sharing on the other, in ways that advance social justice under non-ideal conditions.
Methanogens: Pushing The Boundaries Of Biology, Nicole R. Buan
Methanogens: Pushing The Boundaries Of Biology, Nicole R. Buan
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that grow by producing methane gas. These microbes and their exotic metabolism have inspired decades of microbial physiology research that continues to push the boundary of what we know about how microbes conserve energy to grow. The study of methanogens has helped to elucidate the thermodynamic and bioenergetics basis of life, contributed our understanding of evolution and biodiversity, and has garnered an appreciation for the societal utility of studying trophic interactions between environmental microbes, as methanogens are important in microbial conversion of biogenic carbon into methane, a high-energy fuel. This review discusses the theoretical basis for …
Views From Above: Recent Forest History In The Far North Of Madagascar, Nathanael R. Bartosch
Views From Above: Recent Forest History In The Far North Of Madagascar, Nathanael R. Bartosch
Honors Theses
This study is a spatial analysis of the forests west of Mt. d’Ambre National Park in the far northern portion of Madagascar. This area has little spatial, ethnographic, or historic data pertaining to the environment. After a research trip to this area from June to August 2017, the need for a temporal study of forest change materialized. Utilizing Landsat data, NDVIs were generated to assess forest cover density from 1978 to 2018. This spatial analysis saw deforestation across the study area. Deforestation in this area is mainly caused by agriculture, large foreign companies, recent immigration, and local exploitation of timber …
Automatic Modulation Classification Using Cyclic Features Via Compressed Sensing, Andrew J. Ramsey
Automatic Modulation Classification Using Cyclic Features Via Compressed Sensing, Andrew J. Ramsey
Theses
Cognitive Radios (CRs) are designed to operate with minimal interference to the Primary User (PU), the incumbent to a radio spectrum band. To ensure that the interference generated does not exceed a specific level, an estimate of the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) for the PU’s channel is required. This can be accomplished through determining the modulation scheme in use, as it is directly correlated with the SINR. To this end, an Automatic Modulation Classification (AMC) scheme is developed via cyclic feature detection that is successful even with signal bandwidths that exceed the sampling rate of the CR. …
Implementing Ihi Joy In Work Framework To Decrease Turnover Among Unit Leaders, Allison Reid
Implementing Ihi Joy In Work Framework To Decrease Turnover Among Unit Leaders, Allison Reid
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: A medical center in an integrated health care system in Northern California has experienced high turnover for unit level leaders employed in an acute care setting. The role of unit level leaders (managers, assistant managers, and supervisors) in this organization is complex, often stressful, and includes 24/7 accountability. These leaders must simultaneously deliver on organizational goals, patient safety, quality, budgets, and staff satisfaction (Loveridge, 2017). Increasing resilience can help these leaders cope with stress and find joy in their work, making them less likely to leave their leadership positions (Hudgins, 2016).
Context: According to Loveridge, the turnover rates of …
Transforming Nursing Preceptors By Developing Emotional Intelligence, Michael Francis
Transforming Nursing Preceptors By Developing Emotional Intelligence, Michael Francis
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Changing the process of professionally developing nursing preceptors to meet the growing and changing needs of the nursing profession is critical. This evidence-based project leveraged an advanced preceptor education program for inclusion of basic emotional intelligence tenets and transitioning them into preceptor self-awareness, leadership recognition, and return on human capital investment. A large integrated healthcare system in Northern California identified a strategic need for preceptor development and within the system two acute care hospitals and one home health/hospice agency were selected to participate. The intervention included the development of a six-hour curriculum delivered through an interactive and innovative in-person learning …
Frontline Focus: A Nurse Manager's Employee Engagement Toolkit, Christen Straw
Frontline Focus: A Nurse Manager's Employee Engagement Toolkit, Christen Straw
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Average hospital turnover rates in the US reached 18.2% in 2017. Turnover rates for registered nurses (RNs) were also at an all-time high of 16.8%. RN turnover can cost up to $61,100 per nurse resulting in the average hospital loss of $5.7 million per year (NSI, 2018). Employee engagement and job satisfaction levels are predictors of nursing turnover and patient outcomes and should be a top priority for nurse leaders. A disengaged workforce not only affects team morale and organizational spending, but it also impacts the quality of patient care. Multiple studies suggest that employee engagement is the number …
Implementation And Evaluation Of A Nurse-Driven Protocol For Urinary Catheter Management, Analynn Cisneros
Implementation And Evaluation Of A Nurse-Driven Protocol For Urinary Catheter Management, Analynn Cisneros
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem Description: Hospitals compromise quality care and the health of its patients by subjecting the patients to risks that are preventable, such as nosocomial infections (IOM, 1999). The most preventable infection is a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) (Tenke, Meizei, Bode, and Koves, 2016). CAUTIs remain prevalent in the acute care setting (CDC, 2016).
Context: Prior to the implementation of this DNP project, the organization of focus did not have a nurse-driven protocol in place to guide urinary catheter management. Joint Commission mock surveyors recommended a protocol be implemented. A nurse-based protocol would benefit this Magnet hospital. Implementing …

In the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), sex is determined by a single Mendelian factor, yet its sex chromosomes do not exhibit morphological differentiation typical of many vertebrate taxa that possess a single sex-determining locus. As sex chromosomes are theorized to differentiate rapidly, species with undifferentiated sex chromosomes provide the opportunity to reconstruct early events in sex chromosome evolution. Whole genome sequencing of 48 salamanders, targeted chromosome sequencing and in situ hybridization were used to identify the homomorphic sex chromosome that carries an A. mexicanum sex-determining factor and sequences that are present only on the W chromosome. Altogether, …

- Abstract
While there is no precise count, some experts believe New York is home to as many as 800 languages. New York City is definitely the capital of language density in the world, says Daniel Kaufman, an adjunct professor of linguistics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. However, he predicts that half of those 800 languages will be extinct in the near future. “We’re sitting in an endangerment hot spot where we are surrounded by languages that are not going to be around …
