Self-Concept And Identity Development In Adolescents Pamphlet, Ernest M. Oleksy

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Parenting is difficult, but parenting an adolescent can be very trying for many parents. As adolescents spend more time with their peers in high school, the pressing questions of who they are and how they can fit in can become daunting and unanswerable. To support parents in their endeavors in supporting their children, this pamphlet provides a brief but thorough salvo into the current literature on identity development, self-concept, and personality as it pertains to adolescents. Furthermore, this pamphlet will provide resources and skill steps for parents to engage in so that they can help their children persist through their …

The Theory Of Relativity And Applications: A Simple Introduction, Ellen Rea

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

This paper will provide a brief overview of the theory of relativity by looking at its two parts: special relativity and general relativity. It will omit most of the complex mathematics involved in order to focus on providing a more conceptual understanding. However, some simplified equations will be introduced to illustrate various aspects of the theory. Some of the experiments and scientific observations that support the theory as well as some of the scientific advances that emerged from the theory will also be discussed. Following the overview of the theory of relativity will be some of its applications in past …

An Examination Of The Death Penalty, Alexandra N. Kremer Dec 2018

An Examination Of The Death Penalty, Alexandra N. Kremer

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The death penalty, or capital punishment, is the use of execution through hanging, beheading, drowning, gas chambers, lethal injection, and electrocution among others in response to a crime. This has spurred much debate on whether it should be used for reasons such as ethics, revenge, economics, effectiveness as a deterrent, and constitutionality. Capital punishment has roots that date back to the 18th century B.C., but, as of 2016, has been abolished in law or practice by more than two thirds of the world’s countries and several states within the United States. Here, the arguments for and against the death …

“A New Way Of Thinking”: Frantz Fanon’S True Opinion On Violence, Caroline D. Renko Dec 2018

“A New Way Of Thinking”: Frantz Fanon’S True Opinion On Violence, Caroline D. Renko

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

In an attempt to clear Frantz Fanon’s name, on account of his opinion on the role of violence in decolonizing a nation, this paper focuses on two important chapters in his last book, The Wretched of the Earth. By closely reading his articulation of the Algerian war and the wounds brought on by mental illness at such a time, Fanon’s true opinion concerning violence becomes clear. For too long, he has been seen and used as a proponent for inciting violence, but this is a misconception that has been perpetuated by devaluing the importance of his descriptions of the …

Automatic Dubbing Of Videos With Multiple Speakers, Sandro Feuz, Mohammadamin Barekatain Dec 2018

Automatic Dubbing Of Videos With Multiple Speakers, Sandro Feuz, Mohammadamin Barekatain

Defensive Publications Series

A machine-learning model that automatically converts audio streams from an audio-visual content from a source language to a destination language is described. In response to determining that an audio stream should be translated, a machine-learning-based dubbing model is invoked for a specific destination language. In case of multiple speakers, voice embedding techniques are used to match dubbed audio streams to the corresponding speakers. The sentiment in the original speaker’s voice is preserved by training the model with targeted data set in the destination language.

Securing Private Images On User Devices, Linden Evans, Laura Paragano Dec 2018

Securing Private Images On User Devices, Linden Evans, Laura Paragano

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to secure and remove private images (e.g., photos) from display on user devices. With user permission, a device examines stored user images for private content and relocates detected private images to a locked album on the device. The private album can include user-adjustable settings to control the organization and distribution of private images. Such features enable the device to automatically seclude private images, thus removing such images from potential undesirable discovery by other users that may use the device or other devices that access a collection of images on the device.

A Research Program For Studying Lams And Community In The Digital Age, Andreas Vårheim, Roswitha Skare, Noah Lenstra, Kiersten F. Latham, Geir Grenersen

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The paper outlines a research effort into the changing representations, policies, strategies, activities, and practices of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) in the digital age. Comprehensive social changes including big slow-moving processes, such as aging populations, global migration, technological change, and environmental change, expose communities and LAM institutions to vulnerabilities. How do the institutions handle vulnerabilities, how do they become more resilient, and how do they contribute to building the resilience of their local communities?

The Public Library And Social Media: A Case Study From Tromsø, Norway, Roswitha Skare Dec 2018

The Public Library And Social Media: A Case Study From Tromsø, Norway, Roswitha Skare

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Historically, archives, libraries and museums (ALM) have been perceived as institutions providing infrastructure for an open and enlightened public discourse. The Norwegian Public Libraries Act focuses on public libraries being providers of knowledge and cultural expressions, agents of popular enlightenment, local meeting places and arenas of debate and participation in the public sphere. But public libraries are also supposed to keep up with the technological development and to offer digital services to the inhabitants of their municipality. This paper presents the first findings of an ongoing research project investigating the relationship between physical meetings at the Tromsø public library and …

The Wonders Of The Augsburg Cabinet: Three Ways Of Experiencing A Document, Kiersten F. Latham Dec 2018

The Wonders Of The Augsburg Cabinet: Three Ways Of Experiencing A Document, Kiersten F. Latham

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Since even before Frohmann (2009) proposed his document analysis on the meaning of cabinets of curiosity, I have been fascinated with them. Their emergence in the 15th century (MacGregor, 2007) is also the tantalizing beginnings of the birth of the modern museum. In museum studies, we often ask what the meaning of the museum is today (Latham & Simmons, 2014); I believe that part of the answer to this question is in these curious compartmentalized pieces of furniture that held the wonders of the world and helped users make meaning a very long time ago.

One can see examples of …

Disciplines Derived From The Discovery Of Historical Archives, Yongsheng Chen, Huanning Su

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper reviews four famous areas of study in China that emerged from the discovery of historical archives to become their own disciplines. Through a literature review, this paper analyzes the importance of historical archives for forming disciplines by introducing the origin, development, research objectives and research contents of these four disciplines. Based on that, this paper finally suggests that people’s attention to archives is the biggest reason for forming disciplines. By discussing the reasons for accelerating the combination of studies and historical archives, this paper gives suggestions for archives management.

Libraries And The Establishment Of A Sámi Political Sphere, Geir Grenersen Dec 2018

Libraries And The Establishment Of A Sámi Political Sphere, Geir Grenersen

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The first Sámi newspaper, Sagai Muitalæggje, was established in 1903, and in 1906 the first Sámi was elected to the Norwegian parliament. Through these two events, the Sámi (the indigenous population of Norway) had their own voice heard and achieved political influence in the public sphere for the first time. What was the role and significance of libraries in this process? Anders Larsen, the editor of Sagai Muitalæggje, and his friend Isak Persen, the first Sámi elected to the Norwegian Parliament, were students at Tromsø Teaching College, the highest academic institution in Northern Norway at that time. Anders Larsen …

The Architext Of Biblion: Digital Echoes Of Paul Otlet, Arthur Perret Dec 2018

The Architext Of Biblion: Digital Echoes Of Paul Otlet, Arthur Perret

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Paul Otlet's 1934 Traité de documentation is a landmark publication, but its considerable scope, complex structure and sheer volume make it a particularly challenging resource to use. This paper reports on an experiment in which visual methods and lexicometry are used to understand how the Traité is organized and what it is about. We describe the underlying logic of the experiment using the concepts of biblion and architext, then process the table of contents and full text of the book with several visualization methods, discussing their output. This allows us to confirm and expand on previous qualitative appraisal of the …

Documents And Moral Knowledge: Art In Yellowstone National Park, Tim Gorichanaz Dec 2018

Documents And Moral Knowledge: Art In Yellowstone National Park, Tim Gorichanaz

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Documents have traditionally been conceptualized as representations of reality. Recently, scholars have been exploring how documents can also construct reality. In this paper, I follow this thread, discussing how documents can supply moral knowledge, showing what people ought to value in the world, thereby guiding action. Specifically, I discuss two works of art depicting Yellowstone National Park: a painting by Thomas Moran, done in the 19th century; and a photograph by Michael Nichols, from the 21st. Both of these works respond to a dualism in the human relationship to the wilderness, dating back at least to the European colonization of …

The Documentality Of Memory In The Post-Truth Era, Claire Scopsi Dec 2018

The Documentality Of Memory In The Post-Truth Era, Claire Scopsi

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This article analyzes the documentality of memories in order to ground further consideration of memory for historical research in the post-truth era. The article compares discussions of the document in document theory to those in French historical epistemology in order to establish what is a reliable documentary source. Formerly, reliability was rooted in the paradigm of truth and the authenticity guaranteed by institutions and scientists. In today's post-truth era, these foundations are questioned. This article suggests that we consider the production of historical narratives as a design process, and that we evaluate the truthfulness of a source according to three …

From Bibliography To Documentography, Michael K. Buckland Dec 2018

From Bibliography To Documentography, Michael K. Buckland

Proceedings from the Document Academy

There is ambiguity in the use of the term bibliography for both the study of printed books and also for the listing of accessible intellectual resources. We address this ambiguity by examining two well-known anomalies: Donald F. Mckenzie’s assertion that bibliography should extend to all media, including culturally significant objects in the landscape and Suzanne Briet’s declaration that an antelope in a zoo is a document. This paper summarizes and extends an earlier, more detailed discussion (Buckland, 2018).

Why Are We Here? On The (Philosophical) Value Of Documents, Marco Inchingolo, Valeria Martino Dec 2018

Why Are We Here? On The (Philosophical) Value Of Documents, Marco Inchingolo, Valeria Martino

Proceedings from the Document Academy

What does a philosopher do with documents? The most natural answer to this question would probably be that philosophers, as writers, produce documents. What would appear as less intuitive, though, is a philosopher producing documents about documents. But philosophy—and in particular ontology—has always been interested in what there is out there in the world. And documents are a peculiar class of objects, the stuff the world is filled with. This year, the Annual Meeting of the Document Academy has been hosted by a philosophy department for the first time: by the Department of Philosophy of the University of Turin. …

Global Advances in Business Communication

This research compares how Chinese and American professionals visually self-present with professional profile pictures. Three studies were conducted. In Study 1, we surveyed 310 professionals in China and 215 professionals in the United States about preferred profile picture backgrounds for professional sites, such as LinkedIn and corporate webpages. Generally, Americans opted first for grey backgrounds more so than Chinese, and Chinese opted for blue and white backgrounds more so than Americans. Chinese and Americans both preferred office pictures over outdoor settings, although Chinese were more likely to choose office settings without views. In Study 2, we evaluated CEO profile pictures …

Infusing Infographics Into The Business Curriculum: A Study Of Infographic Interpretations In China, New Zealand, And The United States, Stephanie Kelly, Stephen Croucher, Todd L. Sandel, Fei Yu

Global Advances in Business Communication

The present study sought to identify whether infographics should be infused into business curriculum as a tool for improving the efficiency of cross-cultural business communication. Students from the United States, New Zealand, and China were presented with a series of 10 infographics with all text in French, a language not spoken by any of the student participants. Of the infographics, eight were designed with traditional visual relationships, one was designed based upon metaphor, and one relied upon visual relationships and incorporated metaphor. The majority of students in both samples were able to successfully interpret the information in each infographic except …

Using Online Photography Portfolios To Enhance Cross-Cultural Awareness, Orlando R. Kelm Dec 2018

Using Online Photography Portfolios To Enhance Cross-Cultural Awareness, Orlando R. Kelm

Global Advances in Business Communication

There are two major challenges that we face when teaching and training about cross-cultural communication. The first is to develop the ability to observe and notice cross-cultural patterns that differ from our own. The second is that these observations become more significant when linked to some kind of context, model, theory or application. With this, the observations, if made at all, simply remain random thoughts and opinions.

The object of this paper is to describe our experience in providing cross-cultural training that addresses these two challenges. Specifically, we share a methodology where learners build online electronic portfolios (using e.g., pathbrite.com) …
