Does Persistent Snowpack Inhibit Degradation Of Fecal Stress Indicators?, Grace Parikh, Christopher R. Webster, John A. Vucetich, John J. Durocher, Joseph K. Bump
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Physiological stress in wildlife can be a useful indicator of a population’s response to environmental factors. By using non-invasive endocrinological techniques, such as fecal sampling, potential confounding factors associated with the stress of capture can be avoided. A potential drawback of fecal sampling, however, is degradation of samples which may produce aberrant measurements of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites. In vertebrates, glucocorticoids, such as corticosterone, become elevated in response to stress. We sought to gauge the reliability of measurement of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fecal samples exposed to a temperate winter with substantial snow cover and …

Creating An Adult Learner Entry Achievement Program, Gloria Riopelle
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
ABSTRACT
This proposal is to implement an Adult Learner Entry Achievement Program (ALEAP) within higher education institutions. The purpose of the ALEAP program is to support and serve the needs of adult learners who want to return to or begin college to earn their degree or certificate and pursue their personal or career goals. In turn, their achievements will also increase the higher education attainment rates in the State of Minnesota. This program could exist as a stand-alone program or be housed within support systems, such as, Continuing Education or an Academic Support Center.
Current research indicates that there is …

Quantity Versus Quality: Comparing Reading Recovery And Title I Reading As A First Grade Early Literacy Intervention, Jenna Meyers
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study is to promote full implementation of the Reading Recovery program and compare the relationship of Reading Recovery and Title I Reading services among struggling first grade readers. This study will look at first grade students in three classrooms who are reading below grade level and are selected to receive a daily, 30-minute reading intervention that supplements classroom instruction. Two of the classrooms will be placed in Title I reading groups following Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) curriculum. The lowest readers from the third classroom will be tested and selected for 12 to 20 weeks of Reading …

The Alignment Of Esl Materials To Wida And State Standards, Jenna Marie Quanbeck
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This project analyzed the various 2nd grade English language (EL) materials that were available in a rural elementary school to determine how those materials aligned to Minnesota (MN) state academic standards and the WIDA English Language Development standards. First, the various bodies of literature available on alignment and current recommendations for determining alignment between course content and state academic standards were reviewed. Then, the researcher developed and implemented a checklist-based process for determining alignment. This paper presents the literature review, the checklists, and the results of the analysis. The materials were found to be aligned to standards. The researcher …

Effect Of Music And Movement On Recognition Of Sight Words Of Kindergarten Students, Joni Jensen
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of using music and movement to teach sight words to kindergarten students. The experimental group will learn sight words through movement and singing. This study includes the collection of data by assessing each student's ability to recognize sight words. Students will be assessed by using a district wide sight word inventory. Once data is collected, it will be compared to a different classroom (control group) that has not used music or movement to teach sight words.
This study also includes a parent involvement component. Students will bring home sight word …

The Relationship Between Self-Monitoring And On-Task Behavior For Students With Developmental Disabilities, Corrin Mann
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to determine whether the practice of self-monitoring would improve the on-task behavior of high school students with developmental disabilities. The study tracked the effects of self-monitoring on a student’s on-task behavior while in a functional life skills class through a transition program. Students practicing in this study demonstrated off-task behavior while in the life skills class. The students were taught to keep track of their on-task behavior with the use of a timer and a self-monitoring checklist. The acronym CLAWS was used to help students remember what on-task behavior looked like. Data was …

The Role Of An Advanced Practice Provider (App) And Its Relation To Physician Shortages And Rural Healthcare Survival: A State-By-State Analysis, Allen Anderson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The extent that Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are able to practice independently with a full scope of practice varies state-by-state. The purpose of this paper was to review how APPs could help in a number of different areas of healthcare. This analysis examines the state of rural healthcare and reviews physician shortage statistics and hospital closures by state. In the examination, it also evaluates which states have full scope, reduced scope, and restricted scope of practice laws and cross-references that with states that have experienced a hospital closure. Through case studies, this research finds that APPs can be an alternative …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide the highest level of scientific evidence, but successful participant recruitment is critical to ensure the external and internal validity of results. This study describes the strategies associated with recruiting older adults at increased falls risk residing in retirement villages into an 18-month cluster RCT designed to evaluate the effects of a dual-task exercise program on falls and physical and cognitive function.
METHODS: Recruitment of adults aged ≥65 at increased falls risk residing within retirement villages (size 60-350 residents) was initially designed to occur over 12 months using two distinct cohorts (C). Recruitment occurred via …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This commentary delivers a practical perspective on the current state of subjective training load (TL) monitoring, and in particular sessional ratings of perceived exertion, for performance enhancement and injury prevention. Subjective measures may be able to reflect mental fatigue, effort, stress, and motivation. These factors appear to be important moderators of the relationship TL has with performance and injury, and they also seem to differ between open and closed skill sports. As such, mental factors may affect the interaction between TL, performance, and injury in different sports. Further, modeling these interactions may be limited due to the assumption that an …

Geologic Map And Structural Development Of The Noerthernmost Sur-Nacimiento Fault Zone, Central California Coast, Scott M. Johnston, John S. Singleton, Alan D. Chapman, Gabriella Murray
Physics
The Sur-Nacimiento fault exposed along the central California coast (United States) juxtaposes the Salinian block arc against the Nacimiento block accretionary complex, cuts out the majority of the forearc basin and western arc, and requires a minimum of 150 km of orogen-normal crustal excision within the Mesozoic California convergent margin. Despite this significant strain, the kinematic evolution of the Sur-Nacimiento fault remains poorly understood, with diverse hypotheses suggesting sinistral, dextral, thrust, or normal displacement along the fault. This Late Cretaceous–Paleogene strain history is complicated by the location of the fault within a belt of subparallel faults that have accommodated significant …

Vegetation Trends In A Restored Coastal Wetland At Prisoners Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park, Paula J. Power, Marie Denn, Joel Wagner, Mike Martin
Western North American Naturalist
Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island, California, formerly supported a 5-ha wetland and riparian system, the largest on the California Channel Islands. During the late 1800s ranchers filled in about half of the wetland area in order to support ranching activities. They also rerouted the stream channel to the canyon edge and built an earthen berm along its west bank, which disconnected the stream from its floodplain. The National Park Service developed a wetland and riparian restoration design for Prisoners Harbor based on topographic and hydrologic analyses and on vegetation community depth-to-water-table relationships developed from neighboring reference wetlands. In 2011 …
