Monitoring Postoperative Opioid Use Following Simple Arthroscopic Meniscectomy: A Performance-Improvement Strategy For Prescribing Recommendations And Community Safety., Vance Gardner, David Gazzaniga, Michael Shepard, Robert Grumet, Benjamin Rubin, Michael Dempewolf, Camille Bray, Carlos Prietto

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background: Orthopaedic surgeons are confronted with a difficult dilemma: managing acute pain postoperatively and balancing the risk of prescription opioid use. To our knowledge, a prospective performance-improvement project providing opioid-prescription recommendations based on the actual amounts of usual and customary medication consumed following simple knee meniscectomy has not been described.

Methods: One hundred and two patients undergoing arthroscopic knee meniscectomy prospectively recorded postoperative pain medications in a pain journal. Arthroscopic procedures were performed at 2 centers by 9 fellowship-trained senior surgeons. Various usual and customary prescribing protocols were observed, and the amount of medication consumed was recorded. Prescription and over-the-counter …

Personal Reflections / 12.20.18, José M. Torres

Personal Reflections

Today as our IMSA students depart from their IMSA home to spend winter break at their "other" home, I want to wish them and their families a very joy-filled winter break. I know that our staff, including myself and the faculty, look forward to enjoying the holidays with our respective families.

Last Friday, our students, led ably by our Music Faculty Mary Beth McCarthy and Emily Cooley, put on a spectacular music program, "Sleigh Ride Around the World". Many family members who joined us can attest to the quality and variety of the performance. I was so impressed with the …

Crow Indian Tribe V. United States, Hallee Kansman Dec 2018

Crow Indian Tribe V. United States, Hallee Kansman

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The protection status of the Greater Yellowstone grizzly bear continues to elicit debate and find its way into the courtroom. In Crow Indian Tribe v. United States, for the second time in the last decade, a court held the Service’s attempt to delist the Yellowstone Grizzly arbitrary and capricious. Specifically, the court found the Service’s evaluation of remnant populations, recalibration, and genetic health deficient. This case demonstrates the importance in and the resilient motivation behind preserving grizzly bear populations and genetics. As the practice of delisting a species under the Endangered Species Act continues, this case will provide important …

Policy And Practice Recommendations For Nurse Practitioner-Led Medicare Annualwellness Visits, Vicki Simpson Dec 2018

Policy And Practice Recommendations For Nurse Practitioner-Led Medicare Annualwellness Visits, Vicki Simpson

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Reasons for underutilization are related to personal, organizational, structural, and system barriers and challenges for beneficiaries and providers. Beneficiaries are often unaware of the availability of this visit (or the fact that it is free). They may not understand the value of nor attach strong importance to a visit solely focused upon prevention. Providers report being confused and overwhelmed regarding AWV requirements and guidelines, leading to ambivalence concerning visit implementation (Bluestein, Diduk-Smith, Jordan, Persaud, & Hughes, 2017, Cuenca, Lozoya-Flores, et al., 2012, Simpson, Edwards et al., 2018). Most practices lack an efficient and effective workflow to support implementation of AWVs, …

Gaze Patterns Of Social And Nonsocial Stimuli: A Possible Early Marker For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ashley Rose Doll Dec 2018

Gaze Patterns Of Social And Nonsocial Stimuli: A Possible Early Marker For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ashley Rose Doll

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The push for early identification and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has led to new developments in this area of research. Eye tracking is a promising behavioral screening measure that has been heavily investigated for over a decade. Differences in eye gaze between typically developing (TD) children and children with ASD when viewing social and nonsocial videos have been observed, but only within videos of children playing as social stimuli and with geometric shapes as nonsocial stimuli (Pierce et al., 2016; Shaffer et al., 2017). In addition to social stimuli and geometric shapes, the current study expanded on previous …

2018-December-20-Prehistoric Peccaries, University Marketing And Communications, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 20, 2018) – East Tennessee was once home to a stunning diversity of remarkable animals, including rhinos, tapirs, mastodons, alligators and more.  Scientists know all of this thanks to the fossil-rich clays of the Gray Fossil Site, which preserve an ancient ecosystem that dates back around 5 million years.  At that time, the site was a large pond surrounded by a lush forest.  Now, East Tennessee State University scientists have found another animal to add to the picture of this ancient ecosystem: peccaries.

Peccaries may look like pigs, but they are not.  True pigs, members of the …

Spio Enhance The Cross-Presentation And Migration Of Dcs And Anionic Spio Influence The Nanoadjuvant Effects Related To Interleukin-1Β., Hui Liu, Heng Dong, Na Zhou, Shiling Dong, Lin Chen, Yanxiang Zhu, Hong-Ming Hu, Yongbin Mou

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) have been synthesized and explored for use as carriers of various nanoadjuvants via loading into dendritic cells (DCs). In our study, homogeneous and superparamagnetic nanoparticles are susceptible to internalization by DCs and SPIO-pulsed DCs showed excellent biocompatibility and capacity for ovalbumin (OVA) cross-presentation. Herein, we found that SPIO-loaded DCs can promote the maturation and migration of DCs in vitro. SPIO coated with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS) and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), which present positive and negative charges, respectively, were prepared. We aimed to investigate whether the surface charge of SPIO can affect the antigen cross-presentation of the DCs. …
