Lightfield Compression Using Commodity Hardware Video Codecs, Sai Deng, Pavel Krajcevski, Matthew Pharr, Stuart Abercrombie Dec 2018

Lightfield Compression Using Commodity Hardware Video Codecs, Sai Deng, Pavel Krajcevski, Matthew Pharr, Stuart Abercrombie

Defensive Publications Series

A lightfield video is a series of lightfield stills, which include a number of reference views and residual data describing differences between the reference views and various viewpoints. The set of reference views or images, though different enough to provide the required basis for predicting intermediate views in the dataset, are correlated enough to approximate a traditional video stream. Additionally, reference images from a single time point may be compressed as a collage of smaller images that make up a single frame of a traditional video. Temporal correlation between reference images at successive time points is exploited, similar to standard …

Micro Touchpad For Wearables, Chun Yat Li, Guangzhe Cui, Debanjan Mukherjee Dec 2018

Micro Touchpad For Wearables, Chun Yat Li, Guangzhe Cui, Debanjan Mukherjee

Defensive Publications Series

Users interact with electronic devices via a variety of input devices, such as buttons, touchpads, touchscreens, keyboards, styluses, and mice. Touchpads allow users to provide the electronic devices with a variety of commands and instructions because of their flexibility in receiving many types of input, including touches, swipes, gestures, taps, and holds from one or more fingers or other input devices. Touchpads also allow for robust construction and ergonomic variability in environments in which other input devices may not function as effectively. In particular, a micro touchpad sized for wearable devices, such as watches, activity trackers, or headphones, that retains …

Path Information-Driven Quic Path_Challenge To Optimize Path Selection In 5g Networks, Sebastian Jeuk, Gonzalo Salgueiro, David Hanes

Defensive Publications Series

Proposed herein are techniques that make use of an extended Quick UDP Internet Connection (QUIC) PATH_CHALLENGE frame to perform dynamic path selection operations within a 5G Wi-Fi/cellular network to optimize end-to-end performance. The techniques presented herein expands the capabilities of the current PATH_CHALLENGE function, as defined in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) QUIC drafts. The additional information gathered as part of the PATH_CHALLENGE and the PATH_RESPONSE frame are used to understand path characteristics and dynamically optimize traffic flows accordingly.

Facilitating Pre-Service Teachers To Engage Emergent Bilinguals In Productive Struggle, Benjamin T. Dickey, Jim Ewing, Melissa Caruso, Emily D. Fulmer Dec 2018

Facilitating Pre-Service Teachers To Engage Emergent Bilinguals In Productive Struggle, Benjamin T. Dickey, Jim Ewing, Melissa Caruso, Emily D. Fulmer

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

This study utilized a multiple case study with qualitative research to examine how Pre-service teachers (PSTs) might engage Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) in productive struggle—grappling to solve problems (Warshauer, 2015). The researchers created a rubric based on Warshauer’s (2015) case study to record the types of questions PSTs asked as they tutored fourth grade EBs. Warshauer (2015) claimed PSTs should allow students more wait time and ask questions. She referred to such questions as affordance and probing guidance, which facilitates productive struggle. In order to discover more about the PSTs’ thinking, the researchers interviewed the PSTs before and after their first, …

Representation Of English Language Learners In Special Education: A Campus-Level Study, Ruby López, Diana Linn Dec 2018

Representation Of English Language Learners In Special Education: A Campus-Level Study, Ruby López, Diana Linn

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

This study utilized relative risk ratios to examine the representation of English language learners in special education programs in elementary, middle, and high school campuses in a school district in South Texas. Results indicated that English language learners were both underrepresented and overrepresented in the school district. Furthermore, underrepresentation was greater at the elementary campuses and overrepresentation was greater at the secondary campuses. The use of disaggregated data on the campus level continues to be of importance in understanding the representation of English language learners in special education programs as it provides critical information that cannot be gleaned from data …

Higher Education Experiences Of International Faculty In The U.S. Deep South, Elizabeth Omiteru, James Martinez, Rudo Tsemunhu, Eugene F. Asola Dec 2018

Higher Education Experiences Of International Faculty In The U.S. Deep South, Elizabeth Omiteru, James Martinez, Rudo Tsemunhu, Eugene F. Asola

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Immigration was one of the key issues from within the Obama administration. One focus of the administration was to retain brilliant foreign scholars who have studied in the United States (U.S). Rather than let International Faculty return to their countries after completing their programs, employers found it advantageous to retain these professionals to boost the United States workforce. Higher education was one of the government sectors that experienced an increase in the numbers of foreign nationals choosing to remain in the United States after completing their degrees. What many International Faculty may be oblivious of, and which their programs of …

Introduction To Constellar Theory In Multicultural Education Pedagogy, Antonio Garcia Dec 2018

Introduction To Constellar Theory In Multicultural Education Pedagogy, Antonio Garcia

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

The majority of education and social science ideas subscribe to a hierarchical ideology that not only necessitates but also obligates an always-already dialectic. Such a dialectical fetish and intellectual relegation is grounded in Marxist ideology, which has influenced a vast majority of cultural studies and social science theories. Constellar Theory challenges the hierarchical model ideology in concept and pedagogy to complicate and exhibit a more intricate matrix of considerations to move the multicultural education discourse in possible new directions.

Assessing Mechanistic Reasoning: Supporting Systems Tracing, Paul J. Weinberg Dec 2018

Assessing Mechanistic Reasoning: Supporting Systems Tracing, Paul J. Weinberg

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Reasoning about mechanism is central to disciplined inquiry in science and engineering and should thus be one of the foundations of a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. In addition, mechanistic reasoning is one of the core competencies listed in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Engineering Concepts and Practices (NGSS Lead States, 2013). Mechanistic explanations focus on the processes that underlie cause–effect relationships and consider how the activities of system components affect one another.

While some assessment work has been accomplished in engineering education, to date mechanistic reasoning is an area where limited assessment development has been accomplished for …

The Better Player In The Chinese Educational Reform, Party Secretary Or School Principal?, Qian Zhao, Yuwei Liang

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

In the “top-down” reform of the teacher personnel system, the principal is the core of policy implementation, who also serves as the secretary of the Party organization. We focus on which type of leadership should principals choose to maximize his impact on teachers' professional ability and work stress. The HLM method was used to conduct a longitudinal study of teachers in Mentougou District of Beijing from 2013 to 2015. 603 teachers from 34 schools participated in this research. It is found that the policy couldn’t affect teachers directly, the principals plays a role as a bridge between them. Taking the …
