Effects Of Cultural And Language Barriers On The Outcome Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Amongst Children From The Somali Immigrant Population Of Minnesota, Amal Farah Dec 2018

Effects Of Cultural And Language Barriers On The Outcome Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Amongst Children From The Somali Immigrant Population Of Minnesota, Amal Farah

Theses and Graduate Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a devastating developmental disorder with a decline in both neurological and behavioral functions. ASK can present with delays in language development, social skills, and restricts behavioral patterns. The prevalence of ASD has been on the rise int he United States with a rate of one in 69 children. Moreover, the prevalence of ASD has been drastically increasing in the Somali community of Minnesota affecting one in 32 children. Many research studies associate the rise of ASD in the Somali community with the elements of culture, tradition, and language barriers. This research paper will explore how …

Lozenge Tilings Of A Halved Hexagon With An Array Of Triangles Removed From The Boundary, Part Ii, Tri Lai Dec 2018

Lozenge Tilings Of A Halved Hexagon With An Array Of Triangles Removed From The Boundary, Part Ii, Tri Lai

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Proctor's work on staircase plane partitions yields an exact enumeration of lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon on the triangular lattice. Rohatgi later ex- tended this tiling enumeration to a halved hexagon with a triangle cut o from the boundary. In his previous paper, the author proved a common generalization of Proctor's and Rohatgi's results by enumerating lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon in the case an array of an arbitrary number of triangles has been removed from a non-staircase side. In this paper we consider the other case when the array of tri- angles has been removed from the …

Non-Symbolic Exact Quantity Representation In A Language-Impaired Population, John Verbos Dec 2018

Non-Symbolic Exact Quantity Representation In A Language-Impaired Population, John Verbos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The linguistic relativity hypothesis argues that language influences non-linguistic cognition. One version of the hypothesis suggests that language is a set of tools or technologies that variously enhance or dampen an individual’s capacity to perceive and operate upon the world in certain ways. A domain in which this may be tested is number, where it is hypothesized that counting language allows us to bridge our innate capacities for recognizing small exact quantities (subitizing) and approximating quantities larger than three or four (analog magnitude estimation). To test this, previous studies have asked adult participants who have limited or no access to …

Using An In Vitro-In Vivo Correlation For The ‘Bioequivalence By Design’ Development Of An Immediate Release Carbamazepine Product, Douglas Steinbach Dec 2018

Using An In Vitro-In Vivo Correlation For The ‘Bioequivalence By Design’ Development Of An Immediate Release Carbamazepine Product, Douglas Steinbach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quality of a drug product may be characterized by the consistency with which its indicated clinical effect, and safety profile, is experienced by the patient. The concept that such quality should be built into a product is at the core of the United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) quality by design (QbD) initiative. This vision for pharmaceutical product development emphasizes the risk-based identification of critical quality attributes (CQA) which summarize a product’s performance, the efficient refinement of critical product/process parameters (CPP) that can affect such attributes, and the systematic development of CPP limits, which assure appropriate performance of …

The Association Between Depression, Anxiety And Clinical Outcomes For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Elham Heidari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objective: To evaluate the impact of depression and/or anxiety on clinical outcomes of diabetes, including glycosylated hemoglobin (HgA1c), blood glucose, blood pressure, total cholesterol, weight and LDL among patients with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Method: A retrospective cohort study utilizing electronic medical record (EMR) data from a primary care physician (PCP) group practice was conducted to identify patients newly diagnosed with T2DM with at least 6 months pre-diagnosis and 12 months post-diagnosis of EMR data using International Classification of Disease 9th edition Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding. The presence of comorbid depression and anxiety was identified to identify four …

Well-Trained Mentors: The Missing Component Of The Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program In The Silver Oak Area School, Daniel Bosnic Dec 2018

Well-Trained Mentors: The Missing Component Of The Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program In The Silver Oak Area School, Daniel Bosnic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

“If well-trained, competent, caring teachers were present in every classroom, we would witness a staggering increase in student achievement, motivation, and character improvement along with a marked decrease in discipline problems” (Breaux & Wong, 2003, p.22). If school districts do not take the initiative to design and implement effective induction programs with embedded mentoring, they are essentially setting their teachers and students up for failure. Regardless of educator training programs, new teachers are unprepared to face the diverse and challenging needs of education today (Bartell, 2005). All individuals entering education need assistance in applying their prior knowledge and experience to …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We report on atom-specific activation of CO oxidation on Ru(0001) via resonant X-ray excitation. We show that resonant 1s core-level excitation of atomically adsorbed oxygen in the co-adsorbed phase of CO and oxygen directly drives CO oxidation. We separate this direct resonant channel from indirectly driven oxidation via X-ray induced substrate heating. Based on density functional theory calculations, we identify the valence-excited state created by the Auger decay as the driving electronic state for direct CO oxidation. We utilized the fresh-slice multi-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source that provided time-overlapped and 30 fs delayed pairs of soft …

Consciousness Against Commodifcation: The Potential For A Radical Housing Movement In The Cully Neighborhood, Cameron Hart Herrington Dec 2018

Consciousness Against Commodifcation: The Potential For A Radical Housing Movement In The Cully Neighborhood, Cameron Hart Herrington

Dissertations and Theses

A right to housing is a central iteration of the broader demand for a democratic right to the city. The perpetual housing crisis for lower-income people results from a commodified system in which access to housing is based on the exchange value interests of property owners, rather than a universal right to a decent, affordable home. This system is a pillar of neoliberal urban governance and justified by a hegemonic ideology that equates speculative homeownership with the American Dream. Achieving a right to housing, even at the local scale, requires a radical movement that cultivates individual and collective consciousness, discredits …

This Is A Question? Prosody, Social Communication, And The N400 Effect, Elizabeth A. Kaplan Dec 2018

This Is A Question? Prosody, Social Communication, And The N400 Effect, Elizabeth A. Kaplan

Theses - ALL

The present study examined electrophysiological responses, specifically the N400 effect, in typically developing adults (N = 37) to spoken questions and statements that contained prosodically congruous and prosodically incongruous contours. In particular, prosodic incongruities were created by cross-splicing the audio signal so that questions ended with a decreasing pitch and statements ended with an increasing pitch. Further, the study examined the extent to which the size of an individual's N400 effect was related to an applied score of social communication as measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition. Results revealed no main effect of sentence congruency, but a main …

Confronted With Bullying When You Believe In A Just World, David Voss Dec 2018

Confronted With Bullying When You Believe In A Just World, David Voss

Theses - ALL

Bullying has been recognized as a phenomenon that detrimentally affects the lives of many, and researchers continue to explore its various potential influences and correlates. Among such correlates that have been examined, are scales measuring the belief in a just world (BJW). While the BJW predicts victim blaming across a wide host of circumstances, both the personal BJW and the global BJW have been found to correlate positively with empathetic attitudes toward bullying. However, the global BJW’s relation to bullying has only been examined in one study that used an explicit five-item measure to capture attitudes toward bullying. The current …

An Investigation Of Civilian Implicit Attitudes Toward Police Officers, Rikki Hope Sargent Dec 2018

An Investigation Of Civilian Implicit Attitudes Toward Police Officers, Rikki Hope Sargent

Theses - ALL

This research investigated implicit attitudes toward police among civilians. Two preliminary studies served as an empirical foundation for the current study, as both assessed the implicit construct activation of safety and fear when participants were primed with police using a modified version of the Word Fragment Completion Task (e.g., Johnson & Lord, 2010). The findings were counter-intuitive, such that in a college sample safety construct activation increased and fear decreased when primed with police, whereas in an online sample safety and fear construct activation increased. The current study sought to clarify these trends by utilizing four modified versions of the …

UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive

Maker competencies are the skills, talents and dispositions that one acquires or improves upon while problem-solving and working on projects in makerspaces or similar learning environments. However, while learners can develop any number of technology-specific competencies while working in makerspaces, dependent on the types of technology made available within the specific makerspace, this list of competencies is better defined as the higher-level, technology-agnostic, transferable skills and talents that one may acquire or strengthen when working in makerspaces. A quick review of the list of competencies will reveal no mention of 3D printers, Arduinos, or any of the other popular technologies …

Targeted Re-Instruction For Hearing Aid Use And Care Skills, Carly Catherine Alicea Dec 2018

Targeted Re-Instruction For Hearing Aid Use And Care Skills, Carly Catherine Alicea

Dissertations - ALL

Purpose: Approximately 30% of hearing aid owners do not wear their hearing aids. One of the main reasons reported for hearing aid non-use is that hearing aid owners cannot successfully use and/or care for their hearing aids (Lupsakko, Kautiainen, & Sulkava 2005; Popelka et al. 1998; Vuorialho, Karinen, & Sorri 2006). The primary purpose of the present study was to evaluate the benefit of identifying specific hearing aid use and care skills that a hearing aid user cannot perform or has difficulty performing and providing re-instruction on those specific skills. This is operationally defined in the present study as targeted …
