Applying A Total Quality Framework To Qualitative Research Design: A Review, Paula Boros
The Qualitative Report
In Applied Qualitative Research Design: A Total Quality Framework Approach, Margaret R. Roller and Paul J. Lavrakas present their Total Quality Framework (TQF) designed to help researchers understand qualitative research is required to be creditable, analyzable, transparent, and useful. The authors show how qualitative researchers can utilize these four TQR fundamental elements to identify strengths and limitations of their qualitative methods and design process.

Trends Of Testing For And Diagnosis Of Α 1 -Antitrypsin Deficiency In The Uk: More Testing Is Needed, Jb Soriano, Sj Lucas, R Jones, M Miravitlles, V Carter, I Small, D Price, R Mahadeva
Peninsula Medical School
α1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) significantly increases the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and testing of all COPD patients for AATD is recommended by the World Health Organization, European Respiratory Society and Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). We aimed to determine trends for testing and diagnosing AATD from 1990 to 2014. This study analysed all patients diagnosed with COPD from about 550 UK Optimum Patient Care Research Database general practices, including a subgroup of those diagnosed before the age of 60 years. We identified 107 024 COPD individuals, of whom 29 596 (27.6%) were diagnosed before …

Women And The Experience Of Pain And Opioid Use Disorder: A Literature-Based Commentary, Andrew L. Koons, Marna R. Greenberg Do, Mph, Facep, Robert D. Cannon Do, Gillian A. Beauchamp Md
Department of Emergency Medicine
It is generally understood that pain experience and opioid abuse have relied on male-dominated models. However, sex and gender play a role in both pain experience and opioid use disorder.
Using the previously validated Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Sex and Gender Specific Health PubMed Advanced Search Tool, the authors used pertinent literature to develop this literature-based commentary on sex and gender differences in pain experience and opioid use disorder. Women report their experience of pain more frequently, have increased rates of diagnoses related to pain, have increased pain sensitivity, and have a variable response to pain and analgesia. …

Department of Emergency Medicine
Purpose
Substance use and misuse is prevalent in emergency department (ED) populations. While the prevalence of substance use and misuse is reported, sex-specific trends in ED populations have not been documented. We set out to determine the sex-specific prevalence of ED patient substance use during this current epidemic.
Methods
A retrospective electronic data abstraction tool, developed for quality-improvement purposes, was used to assess ED visits in 3 hospitals in northeastern Pennsylvania. All patients with ED diagnosis codes for substance use F10.000 through F 19.999 (excluding F17 codes for nicotine) were abstracted for network ED visits at all 3 hospitals. Data …
Autonomous Vehicles As A Disruptive Innovation: Economic And Social Impact, Tomasz Walivander
Autonomous Vehicles As A Disruptive Innovation: Economic And Social Impact, Tomasz Walivander
Theses
The pace of technology development and innovation is accelerating. The impact of new innovations becomes more and more disruptive, enriching but also challenging peoples' concept of life and the perception of the world. Social and economic implications of new innovations cause rapid and deep shifts in the existing paradigms. The number of tasks, at which machines exceed human capabilities is growing rapidly. Computers analyse medical images, make financial decisions and drive vehicles better than humans. This study is aimed to understand the disruptive nature of self-driving cars and explore the possible socio-economic outcomes that this innovation is expected to bring. …

Therapist Self-Disclosure And Immediacy: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Clara E. Hill, Sarah Knox, Kristen Pinto-Coelho
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
We review definitions and provide case examples of therapist self-disclosure (TSD) and immediacy (Im). We then present a qualitative meta-analysis of 21 studies that examined the subsequent process following TSD and Im in psychotherapy (excluding analogue and correlational studies). Across the 21 studies, the most frequent subsequent processes were enhanced therapy relationship, improved client mental health functioning, gains in insight, and overall helpfulness, suggesting that most often TSD and Im were followed by positive and beneficial therapeutic processes. In additional analyses, TSD was associated more often with improved mental health functioning, overall helpfulness, and enhanced therapy relationships, whereas Im was …

A Secret Police: The Lasting Impact Of The 1986 Foia Amendments, A.Jay Wagner
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
The 1986 Freedom of Information Act amendments were passed as a last-minute rider to Reagan-era War on Drugs legislation. The three pieces – a broad restructuring of Exemption 7, the law enforcement exemption; the addition of exclusions for law enforcement and intelligence requests; and introduction of a new fee structure – have had a lasting impact on FOIA implementation and contribute to the contemporary inability to affect police transparency. Review of the 1986 FOIA amendments’ legislative history documents the White House’s determination to loosen law enforcement oversight and congressional appeals to exaggerated fears of illicit drug users. The study considers …

Professional Practice Guidelines For Occupationally Mandated Psychological Evaluations, American Psychological Association, Timothy P. Melchert
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Psychological evaluations are relied on by employers, professional licensing boards, and civil service commissions to make hiring and employment decisions affecting individuals, organizations, and the public. To promote best practices, these professional practice guidelines were developed for use by psychologists who perform clinical evaluations of individuals for occupational purposes, regardless of whether the evaluation is intended to obtain employment, to achieve licensure/certification, or to maintain either. These guidelines were created by the Committee on Professional Practice and Standards (COPPS) to educate and inform the practice of psychologists who conduct occupationally mandated psychological evaluations (OMPEs), as well as to stimulate debate …
A Narrative Approach To Helping Families And Their Children Who Identify As Transgender Or Gender Nonconforming, Samantha Klassen-Bolding
A Narrative Approach To Helping Families And Their Children Who Identify As Transgender Or Gender Nonconforming, Samantha Klassen-Bolding
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Counselors can help families of transgender or gender nonconforming youth adjust after a child or adolescent expresses differences in gender identity. We propose a community based narrative group therapy which may increase family cohesion and acceptance within the changing family dynamic. The program is psychoeducational and experiential, lasting eight sessions, and begins with psychoeducation about transgender individuals and heteronormative societies. It culminates in re-authoring and witnessing the family’s story in a manner which honors the youth’s gender identity. We propose this program as a strategy for helping practitioners connect diverse LGBTQ+ families with other families experiencing similar transitions.
