© 2018 Wiley Publishing Ltd. Appropriate S-N fatigue design curves for friction stir welded joints in aluminium alloys are currently not specified in design codes and standards. The present paper is intended to assist in enabling standardised fatigue design for such joints, through a comprehensive statistical analysis of more than 500 individual sets of data gathered from published literature. These data are used to establish the usual design fatigue curves for welds that give a 97.7% survival probability with 95% confidence. Experimental fatigue data represent defect-free butt joints and include both flat plate and tubular joints between similar aluminium alloys …

Comparative Study Of Stirrup-Confined Circular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Stub Columns Under Axial Loading, Fa Xing Ding, Jiang Zhu, Shan Shan Cheng, Xuemei Liu
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd This paper presents a comparative study of circular concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns with three different stirrup confinement types: bidirectional stirrups, loop stirrups and orthogonal stirrups. Axial compression tests have been carried out aiming at investigating the effects of the stirrup form and volume-stirrup ratio on the mechanical behavior of the stirrup-confined circular CFT stub columns, and ABAQUS was used to carry out the 3D numerical modelling. Radial stress of the core concrete and the composite action among the steel tube, stirrups and the core concrete have been investigated. It is found that the confinement provided …

Development And Test Of An Open Source Autonomous Sailing Robot With Accessibility, Generality And Extendability, U Vautier, J Wan, M Dai, C Viel, R Hone
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper introduces the design of an open source autonomous sailing robot with emphasis on its accessibility, generality and extendability. To meet such requirements, a generic control box connecting an Arduino board and a Raspberry Pi computer was tailor-made so as to host the robot operating system (ROS) and to interact with versatile sensors and actuators. The goal of such a project is to create an accessible, generic and expendable platform of autonomous sailboats for wider education and research publicity and engagement. Autonomous sailing test for the developed sailboat was also conducted to validate its design.

In recent years, it has been suggested that social robots have potential as tutors and educators for both children and adults. While robots have been shown to be effective in teaching knowledge and skill-based topics, we wish to explore how social robots can be used to tutor a second language to young children. As language learning relies on situated, grounded and social learning, in which interaction and repeated practice are central, social robots hold promise as educational tools for supporting second language learning. This paper surveys the developmental psychology of second language learning and suggests an agenda to study how …

Racial Character Evidence In Police Killing Cases, Jasmine Gonzales Rose
Racial Character Evidence In Police Killing Cases, Jasmine Gonzales Rose
Faculty Scholarship
The United States is facing a twofold crisis: police killings of people of color and unaccountability for these killings in the criminal justice system. In many instances, the officers’ use of deadly force is captured on video and often appears clearly unjustified, but grand and petit juries still fail to indict and convict, leaving many baffled. This Article provides an explanation for these failures: juror reliance on “racial character evidence.” Too often, jurors consider race as evidence in criminal trials, particularly in police killing cases where the victim was a person of color. Instead of focusing on admissible evidence, jurors …

Application Of Artificial Intelligent Predictive Modeling For Completion Optimization And Refracture Candidacy, Daniel Yingling
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unconventional reservoirs are full of uncertainty when dealing with conventional methods of modeling and analysis. The objective of this work is to use a trained artificial intelligent (AI) model to compare actual production data to AI predicted possible well production. Data-driven models based on AI are efficient tools for optimizing the production, stimulation, and completion design of wells and can be very beneficial when determining the success or failure of wells based on production. An AI model for production predictions require both native and design parameters, which include well characteristics, completion design, and stimulation design parameters.;Data from over 100 Marcellus …
The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger
The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of higher education is to educate, train, and motivate people (Hunt, 1998). Typically, best practices and accepted design strategies are used to develop online courses that fulfill the needs of the university, faculty, and student stakeholders. This study examines two methods of instructional design -- the Quality Matters (QM) process, and Keller's ARCS motivational design process -- to understand if instructional design decisions have influence on student motivation in online courses. Quality Matters (QM) offers a well-researched process of designing online courses based on nationally-recognized standards. The QM format provides an ideal objectives-based course design; however, it does …

Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling Encompassing The Stability Of A Vertical Gas Well Subjected To Longwall Mining Operation - A Case Study, Bonaventura Alves Mangu Bali
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Longwall mining has been one of the prominent underground mining methods for extracting coal in the United States for many years due to its production efficiency. However, the method itself can possibly cause problems to surface structures, i.e. gas wells, buildings, roads, etc., that are built or located nearby mining operations. In recent years, significant gas resources have been identified to be located underlying coal deposits, particularly in Southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. As a result, within the time frame of the last 10 years, more than 800 gas well have been drilled through active and future underground longwall …
Group Connectivity And Modulo Orientations Of Graphs, Jiaao Li
Group Connectivity And Modulo Orientations Of Graphs, Jiaao Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation focuses on the subject of nowhere-zero flow problems on graphs. Tutte's 5-Flow Conjecture (1954) states that every bridgeless graph admits a nowhere-zero 5-flow, and Tutte's 3-Flow Conjecture (1972) states that every 4-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero 3-flow. Jaeger et al. (1992) further conjectured that every 5-edge-connected graph is Z3-connected, whose truth implies the 3-Flow Conjecture. Extending Tutte's flows conjectures, Jaeger's Circular Flow Conjecture (1981) says every 4p-edge-connected graph admits a modulo (2 p + 1)-orientation, that is, an orientation such that the indegree is congruent to outdegree modulo p + 1 at every vertex. Note that the p …
