While larger living history museums have been frequently studied by scholars, smaller museums, like Coggeshall Farm Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island receive far less attention. Utilizing historical and institutional records, historical monographs, and literature from the fields of museum studies and anthropology, this study examines authenticity in the museum setting using Coggeshall Farm Museum as a case study, suggesting that despite the museum’s search for historical accuracy, the institution remains inauthentic to recorded history. It argues that the history and interpretation of Coggeshall Farm Museum was intimately intertwined and influenced by the historical perceptions, biases, and dynamics of the museum’s …

Entertainment is an ever-changing medium, and television specifically has gone through many technological innovations since its bright beginnings. These innovations have consistently changed the way stories are told. Stylistic shifts in key elements ranging from shot format to the way shows are constructed can be seen especially clearly in horror which does not have the same narrative constraints as many other genres, and therefore more room to experiment. Some common themes within the history of food and literature include starvation, famine, gluttony, feasting, commensality, hospitality, religion, gender, and class, and indeed food also functions as a complex signifier of national, racial, and cultural identity. Despite the growing international scholarship of food in literature (Bevan 1988; Schofield 1989; Ellmann 1993; Applebaum 2006; Piatti-Farnell 2011; Gilbert and Porter 2015; Boyce and Fitzpatrick 2017; Piatti-Farnell and Lee Brien 2018), until recently, Ireland appeared “as only the smallest of dots on the map of high gastronomy” (Goldstein 2014, xi). The aim of this research is to sensitise readers to issues of inclusion and exclusion on campus at ITB in order to deepen our capacity to empathise with our students in a meaningful, accessible and evocative way in relation to ethnicity and/or nationality. Drawing on evidence from across a range of disciplines (literature, folklore, history, sociology, etc.), this paper explores the lack of an iconic link between Ireland and food, explaining the reasons why Ireland and food are not immediately linked in the popular imagination. It argues for recognition of foodways as a significant element in Ireland’s intangible cultural heritage. It highlights and interrogates constructs, such as ‘national’ and ‘regional’ cuisines, charting the growing scholarship around Irish food history from the ground breaking work of A.T. Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) was a well-respected composer who served the Hapsburg court in Vienna as Hofkapellmeister for thirty-six years, from 1788-1824; his students included such luminaries as Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), and Maria Theresia Paradis (1759-1824). Today, he is remembered mostly for his operas, and for his rivalry and friendship with Mozart. Salieris oratorios have received less attention from scholars than his other works. In this dissertation, I investigate the subjective experience of stuttering. I use two distinct methodologies to look at two different aspects of the stuttering experience. In the first paper, I use a post-structural qualitative research methodology to better understand the experience of passing as fluent. In the second paper, I use the experience sampling method to quantify the mental and physical effort, what I call spontaneity, of stuttered speech.When a person who stutters can hide their stuttering to the extent that others do not know they stutter, they are said to pass as fluent. By the turn of the twentieth century, circuses had established themselves as entertainment giants throughout the United States and much of Europe. With thousands of workers and animals traveling every day in the “tented city,” the circus constituted a unique workplace. The circus was also a highly transient workplace, with a long history of exploiting its workers. As the golden age of the circus began in the 1870s, marked by a move to the railroad shows and use of big top tents, workers became part of a huge transient community that had roots only in the winter months. Counter-discourses express new and alternative views of the world, in contrast with more established discourses which embody mainstream values, norms, beliefs and attitudes. The essays in this volume assess the role of counter-discourses as non-violent forms of resistance to the status quo in core domains of Irish social, cultural and political life. These domains encompass the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process; law enforcement, policing and surveillance; parliamentary debate and obstructionism; identity formation, marriage, divorce and the family; and institutional abuse, authoritarianism and the Catholic Church. The chronic lack of investment in the capital needed to foster the development of music during the period of colonial governance in Ireland and the early years of the Free State, combined with Ireland’s peripheral position in relation to the centres of musical modernism, resulted in composers in Ireland adopting modernist ideas at a very late stage, particularly in comparison with the chronology of Irish literary modernism. This document explores Dr. Leonard Falcones impact on euphonium playing in the United States as both a teacher and an advocate of the instrument. A Sicilian-born immigrant, Falcone spent forty years as director of bands at Michigan State University and euphonium and tuba professor. As a baritonist, Falcone earned early praise for his technique and musicianship from notable figures in the wind band community such as John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman. His commercial recordings were groundbreaking and influenced generations of performers and composers. As a studio instructor, Falcones teaching style was decades ahead of its time as his …

The following article is based on a piece of qualitative research on the use of role-play in a literature module in the Modern Irish Dept. of University College Cork in 2015. There were 18 students involved in the research. The aim of the research was to establish what value students associate with the use of role-play in literature lectures. Role-play is used widely in language classes but less widely in literature lectures. Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs); questionnaires; a focus group; and essays were used as a means of gathering data. The research findings indicate that students are nervous when first …

What is our relationship with technology? As designers, we sit on the precipice between the abstract and the alien; between meaningful imagination and reductive otherness. With the permeation of algorithmic software in the architectural profession, are we able to design algorithmically with meaning? How can digital means aid poetic architecture? This thesis opens a less examined side of algorithmic thinking within the dialogue between designers and the technology we use. Nate Wood is a highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who pushes the boundaries of drumming in a contemporary jazz setting. Wood is well known for his playing with Tigran Hamasyan, Wayne Krantz Trio and Kneebody. This study focused on the orchestration approach of Wood within the context of Tigran Hamasyan’s original compositions. Wood’s drumming was analysed through transcription and interview to further gain insight into his drumming concepts.

These findings contribute to knowledge on contemporary jazz drumming and specifically Wood’s playing, which has not been the topic of a research paper before. Analysis of Wood’s drum parts and improvisation within drumming frameworks …

Background: Patients with prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS) not only increase their risks of nosocomial infections but also deny other patients access to inpatient care. Hepatobiliary (HPB) malignancies have some of highest incidences in East and Southeast Asia and the management of patients undergoing HPB surgeries have yet to be standardized. With improved neurosurgery techniques for intracranial aneurysms and tumors, neurosurgeries (NS) can be expected to increase. Elective surgeries account for far more operations than emergencies surgeries. Thus, with potentially increased numbers of elective HPB and NS, this study seeks to explore perioperative factors associated with prolonged LOS for …

A new approach to teaching the listening course at the undergraduate level provides opportunities for students to experience the SONG of life. SONG is an acronym for listening to the whole of life in the contexts of Self (e.g., discerning inner wisdom), Others (e.g., connecting with feelings and needs), Nature (beholding the beauty of nature), and God (e.g., discovering and connecting with the divine).
