The Stressor In Adolescence Of Menstruation: Economic Analysis Of Effective Coping Strategies, Siobhan K. Yilmaz, Alok K. Bohara, Swati Thapa

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Adolescents are slowly being recognized as a generation, worldwide, that may require different policy approaches to aid in improving their health and wellbeing. Much anecdotal evidence exists from surveys and interviews that girls throughout the developing world face many hardships with menstruation due to a number of constraints, many of which result in poor emotional wellbeing Most of the research, up to this point, has consisted of purely qualitative analysis or at best, correlational evidence of linkages between girls’ background and their likelihood to practice good hygiene. This work, grounded in the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, evaluates the …

A Sketch Of Consciousness Space Beyond Freudian Mental Model And Implications To Socio-Economics Modeling And Integrative Cancer Therapy, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto Jan 2018

A Sketch Of Consciousness Space Beyond Freudian Mental Model And Implications To Socio-Economics Modeling And Integrative Cancer Therapy, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we give an outline of an ongoing study to go beyond Freudian mental archetypal model. First, we discuss the essence of numerous problems that we suffer in our sophisticated and modernized society. Then we discuss possibility to reintroduce spirit into human consciousness. While we are aware that much remain to be done and we admit that this is only a sketch, we hope that this paper will start a fresh approach of research towards more realistic nonlinear consciousness model with wide ranging implications to socio-economic modeling and also integrative cancer therapy. At the last section we also …

Improved Definition Of Nonstandard Neutrosophic Logic And Introduction To Neutrosophic Hyperreals (Third Version), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2018

Improved Definition Of Nonstandard Neutrosophic Logic And Introduction To Neutrosophic Hyperreals (Third Version), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

On the third version of this response-paper to Imamura’s criticism, we recall that NonStandard Neutrosophic Logic was never used by neutrosophic community in no application, that the quarter of century old neutrosophic operators (1995-1998) criticized by Imamura were never utilized since they were improved shortly after but he omits to tell their development, and that in real world applications we need to convert/approximate the NonStandard Analysis hyperreals, monads and binads to tiny intervals with the desired accuracy – otherwise they would be inapplicable. We point out several errors and false statements by Imamura with respect to the inf/sup of nonstandard …

The aim of Study 2 was to develop the UKBTAT (UK Bilingual Toddlers Assessment Tool), the first screening tool for assessing the vocabulary size of bilingual 2-year-olds, in this case learning British English and one of the 13 target Additional Language. The aim of Study 3 was to establish the reliability of UKBTAT for bilingual children learning British English and any other non-target Additional Language. Norms for bilingual vocabulary in English were obtained through regression equations in linear mixed models, using variables shown to be predictive of comprehension and production in the previous analyses (Chapter 3). Similarly, norms for the …

Extinguishing Cue-Controlled Reward Choice: Effects Of Pavlovian Extinction On Outcome-Selective Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer, Tina Seabrooke, Pelley Me Le, Alexis Porter, Chris J. Mitchell Jan 2018

Extinguishing Cue-Controlled Reward Choice: Effects Of Pavlovian Extinction On Outcome-Selective Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer, Tina Seabrooke, Pelley Me Le, Alexis Porter, Chris J. Mitchell

School of Psychology

Outcome-selective Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT) refers to the finding that presenting Pavlovian predictors of outcomes can enhance the vigor of instrumental responding for those same outcomes. Three experiments examined the sensitivity of outcome-selective PIT to Pavlovian (stimulus-outcome) extinction. In Experiment 1, participants first learnt to perform different instrumental responses to earn different outcomes. In a separate Pavlovian training phase, certain stimuli were established as Pavlovian signals of the different outcomes. Some of these Pavlovian stimuli were then extinguished (they were presented alone, without any outcome), while others were not. A final transfer test measured the extent to which these Pavlovian cues …

School of Psychology

Background About one-third of patients who are depressed do not respond to antidepressant medication (ADM) and traditional psychotherapy shows limited benefits. However, most randomised trials have excluded the most sick patients, especially with comorbid personality disorder. Radically open dialectical behaviour therapy (RO DBT) is a new treatment targeting emotionally overcontrolled personality, which is common in refractory depression. Objective To evaluate the efficacy, cost-effectiveness and therapeutic mechanisms of RO DBT for patients with refractory depression. Design The Refractory depression: Mechanisms and Efficacy of RO DBT (RefraMED) trial was a multicentre, parallel-group, randomised trial in which participants were randomised to receive either …

Project ECHO Bibliography

Smoking prevalence among individuals with mental and behavioral health needs is considerably higher compared to the general population, but evidence-based smoking cessation therapies are underutilized in mental and behavioral healthcare settings, despite the fact that these treatments are both safe and effective. The goal of this paper is to present the background, design and pilot of Project TEACH (Tobacco Education and Cessation in the Health System) developed to improve clinical practice by offering specialized training in the provision of smoking cessation interventions to care providers in community mental health centers in Texas. This is achieved through engaging the expertise of …

Not In My Backyard, Joey Franklin Jan 2018

Not In My Backyard, Joey Franklin

Faculty Publications

For a few months one summer when I was a kid, a homeless man slept in the alleyway behind our home. Our backyard shared a fence with a two-story Methodist church that went largely unused during the week, and the small concrete patio beneath its back stairs made for a quiet, inviting shelter from the rain. The man generally came and went under the cover of night, so we didn’t notice him much, but occasionally we’d hear him cough, or smell cigarette smoke wafting over the fence, and we’d know he was back again. I don’t remember actually fearing him, …

Enhancing Grit Through Functional Imagery Training In Professional Soccer, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David Kavanagh Jan 2018

Enhancing Grit Through Functional Imagery Training In Professional Soccer, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Functional Imagery Training (FIT) extends multisensory imagery training by involving athletes with goal setting and appraisal. We measured the effect of FIT on 24 professional soccer players’ grit, a personality trait associated with perseverance for a long-term goal. In a stepped-wedge design an immediate (n=9) and delayed (n=10) group received FIT at week 1 or week 6, and were measured at week 12. A self-selected control group (n=5) received no intervention. The delayed group were also measured at week 6 just before their intervention, and week 18. Grit scores in both intervention groups increased following the intervention, but the control …

Separate Neural Representations Of Prediction Error Valence And Surprise: Evidence From An Fmri Meta-Analysis., Elsa Fouragnan, Chris Retzler, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

Learning occurs when an outcome differs from expectations, generating a reward prediction error signal (RPE). The RPE signal has been hypothesized to simultaneously embody the valence of an outcome (better or worse than expected) and its surprise (how far from expectations). Nonetheless, growing evidence suggests that separate representations of the two RPE components exist in the human brain. Meta-analyses provide an opportunity to test this hypothesis and directly probe the extent to which the valence and surprise of the error signal are encoded in separate or overlapping networks. We carried out several meta-analyses on a large set of fMRI studies …

Competitive Escalation And Interventions, Sebastian Hafenbrädl, Jan K. Woike Jan 2018

Competitive Escalation And Interventions, Sebastian Hafenbrädl, Jan K. Woike

School of Psychology

Competitive escalation occurs frequently in managerial environments, when decisions create sunk costs and decision makers compete under time pressure. In a series of experiments using a minimal dollar auction paradigm, we test interventions to prevent competitive escalation. Without any intervention, most people, including experienced managers, escalate and lose money by bidding more than the price is worth (e.g., more than 10 € for 10 €). We test several interventions, in which we provide individuals with different types of experience: direct experience in structurally identical and in structurally similar situations, as well as direct experience in similarly competitive situations (lacking the …

Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose Jan 2018

Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose

School of Psychology

Background and objectives: A growing body of research has shown that negative, intrusive mental imagery plays a prevalent and causal role in social anxiety, and is qualitatively different to voluntarily generated imagery. Negative imagery can be reduced in vividness and emotional intensity through concurrent lateral eye movements (EMs) as per Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Despite EMDR being used for a range of disorders, previous laboratorybased experimental research typically uses voluntarily generated autobiographical memories rather than involuntarily experienced intrusive images. In a pilot study, we investigated the efficacy of eye movement attenuation of negative, intrusive, socialanxiety imagery. Methods: …
