Navigating The Teen Years: The Adolescent Brain And Christ’S Atonement, Mark H. Butler, Genevieve L. Smith

Faculty Publications

Like other spiritually sincere youth, Caleb struggles with pornography use. At first, he was repulsed by it, but he found himself drawn back to it. The arousal was preoccupying and pleasurable. Pornography use became a habit. He still wanted to go on a mission, marry in the temple, be a worthy father. Repeatedly, he resolved to stop using pornography. He felt anger and shame every time he fell short. Caleb became discouraged and felt like he could never change. He felt that he didn’t deserve God’s or anyone else’s love and forgiveness because of all his broken promises.

Joint Religiosity And Married Couples’ Sexual Satisfaction, Jeffrey P. Dew, Jeremy E. Uecker, Brian J. Willoughby Jan 2018

Joint Religiosity And Married Couples’ Sexual Satisfaction, Jeffrey P. Dew, Jeremy E. Uecker, Brian J. Willoughby

Faculty Publications

Although many studies have examined the association between religion and sexuality, the majority of these studies have focused on non marital sex. Unfortunately, despite the fact that a satisfying sexual relationship plays a critical role in married couples' relationship quality and stability, the associations between religiosity and marital sexual satisfaction are not well understood. Thus, to examine the association between religiosity and couples' reports of married sexual satisfaction, the authors of this study used dyadic data from a nationally representative sample of married couples (N = 1,368) between the ages of 18 and 45. They used both joint and …

Effects Of Parent-Implemented Interventions On Outcomes For Children With Developmental Disabilities: A Meta-Analysis, Tina Taylor, Timothy B. Smith, Byran B. Korth, Barbara Mandleco

Faculty Publications

A large body of literature exists related to parent-implemented interventions for children with disabilities, so it is helpful to synthesize the results of outcome-based interventions for children with developmental disabilities. Specifically, what are the effects of parent-implemented interventions intended to improve children’s (1) social behaviors, (2) life skills/adaptive behavior, and (3) communication skills? Using meta-analytic aggregation of effect sizes across 30 studies with a total of 1,356 participants, this review examined the association between parent-implemented interventions and intended outcomes for young children with developmental disabilities. Across all 30 studies comparing children’s outcomes to control groups, the random-effects-weighted average effect size …

Faculty Publications

The present study investigated the relationship between student use of self-efficacy-building strategies through motivational partnerships and student levels of self-efficacy and motivation in an adult intensive English programme in the United States. The extent to which self-efficacy influenced motivation was also examined. After being organized into these partnerships and receiving self-efficacy-building strategy training from the participating teacher, 16 ESL students had their pre- and post-levels of self-efficacy and motivation measured. Additionally, students discussed the effectiveness of the partnerships on their learning experience. Results show significant correlations between student use of self-efficacy-building strategies and improvement in both their self-efficacy and motivation. …

Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose Jan 2018

Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose

School of Psychology

Background and objectives: A growing body of research has shown that negative, intrusive mental imagery plays a prevalent and causal role in social anxiety, and is qualitatively different to voluntarily generated imagery. Negative imagery can be reduced in vividness and emotional intensity through concurrent lateral eye movements (EMs) as per Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Despite EMDR being used for a range of disorders, previous laboratorybased experimental research typically uses voluntarily generated autobiographical memories rather than involuntarily experienced intrusive images. In a pilot study, we investigated the efficacy of eye movement attenuation of negative, intrusive, socialanxiety imagery. Methods: …

School of Health Professions

Aim/Purpose Engagement in doctoral training is intended to lead to personal development, as well as – of course - the development of a person’s skills as a researcher. Having engaged in the occupation of doctoral training, I aim to reflect upon how my identity as researcher developed throughout this process; that is, through doing, being, becoming, and belonging. The aim of my doctoral research was to explore the impact of woman-to-woman rape and sexual assault. Hence, the foundational themes explored in this paper are sexual offending, auto/biography, and the significance of identity. Background I commenced my doctoral training as someone …

Disadvantage In English Seaside Resorts: A Typology Of Deprived Neighbourhoods, Sheela Agarwal, Steven Jakes, Stephen Essex, Stephen J. Page, Martin Mowforth

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Socio-economic disadvantage experienced by residents of English seaside resorts has been growing over the last decade, and academic and practice-based research is providing better insights into the causes, internal dynamics and appropriate policy responses to these issues in coastal communities. This paper examines the nature and extent of disadvantage in English seaside resorts through analysis of a specially devised spatial and temporal database, which draws together various publicly available sources beyond the population census and Index of Multiple Deprivation. Using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses of this database, a new typology of highly deprived resort neighbourhoods has been devised, with …

Exploring The Complex Relationships Among Reasoning, Content Understanding, And Intuition In Physics, Cody Gette Jan 2018

Exploring The Complex Relationships Among Reasoning, Content Understanding, And Intuition In Physics, Cody Gette

Education STEM

Physics education research over the past few decades has made significant advances toward improving instructional practices and developing effective instructional materials for physics classrooms. In some contexts, however, after multiple instructional refinements difficulties can remain persistent. Recent findings in PER suggest that many of these difficulties are consistent with reasoning paths accounted for by dual process theories of reasoning. Students often appear to be able to employ correct conceptual understanding in one context, but neglect to demonstrate the same understanding in another closely related context. This thesis explores the use of dual-process theories of reasoning as a lens for interpreting …

Smiles In Face Matching: Idiosyncratic Information Revealed Through A Smile Improves Unfamiliar Face Matching Performance, Mila Mileva, A. Mike Burton Jan 2018

Smiles In Face Matching: Idiosyncratic Information Revealed Through A Smile Improves Unfamiliar Face Matching Performance, Mila Mileva, A. Mike Burton

School of Psychology

Unfamiliar face matching is a surprisingly difficult task, yet we often rely on people's matching decisions in applied settings (e.g., border control). Most attempts to improve accuracy (including training and image manipulation) have had very limited success. In a series of studies, we demonstrate that using smiling rather than neutral pairs of images brings about significant improvements in face matching accuracy. This is true for both match and mismatch trials, implying that the information provided through a smile helps us detect images of the same identity as well as distinguishing between images of different identities. Study 1 compares matching performance …

Quality After The Qof? Before Dismantling It, We Need A Redefined Measure Of ‘Quality’, James Close, Richard Byng, Jose M. Valderas, Nicky Britten, Helen Lloyd Jan 2018

Quality After The Qof? Before Dismantling It, We Need A Redefined Measure Of ‘Quality’, James Close, Richard Byng, Jose M. Valderas, Nicky Britten, Helen Lloyd

Peninsula Medical School

The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) for UK general practice is one of the largest health-related pay-for-performance (P4P) schemes in the world. In 2004, the scheme initially had a positive impact on quality of care, primarily achieved via establishment of procedural baselines in the clinical management of incentivised (mostly chronic) diseases. It reduced between-practice variation in care delivery while also improving disease registers, recording of clinical activities, and adoption of electronic medical record systems, leading to an explosion in general practice data and research. Despite some successes, recent years have seen accelerated debate concerning the removal of QOF. One major …

Motivational Needs Of Secondary Family & Consumer Sciences Students, Ann Marie Dietchman Jan 2018

Motivational Needs Of Secondary Family & Consumer Sciences Students, Ann Marie Dietchman

Education

This study examined North Dakota junior and senior high school FCS students’ perceptions of their motivational needs. The survey instrument used was created by Turner & Herren (1997). The questionnaire measured the motivational needs for achievement, affiliation, and power from McClelland’s (1987) theory of motivation. 175 secondary, junior and senior, students completed web-based questionnaires. One-way ANOVAs were run to determine the influence of independent variables (grade level, GPA, gender, race/ethnicity, and FCCLA membership) on the three motivational needs (achievement, affiliation, and power). The data indicated that FCS students expressed the greatest need for achievement. Females have a greater need than …

Academic Success And Retention: Assessing Variables That Make A Difference In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Wendy Kopp Jan 2018

Academic Success And Retention: Assessing Variables That Make A Difference In A Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Wendy Kopp

Education

Attrition rates for both traditional and nontraditional students in nursing programs across the U.S. are of concern in light of the current and projected shortage of nurses. The lack of success advancing through the nursing curriculum affects the nursing student, the nursing program, and the healthcare of the community. As a result, nursing programs have been encouraged to make student success programs a priority; however, there has been a paucity of research that has examined the effect these programs have on student success. Framed by Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of …

Exploring Contemporary Issues Related To Title Ix And The Incorporation Of Amnesty Policies, Emily Ann Frazier

Education

Colleges and universities have been inundated with new and changing federal guidance for Title IX compliance since 2011. Though most campuses have made significant strides in compliance with mandates, far fewer have incorporated non-required practices. Sexual assault amnesty is one practice gaining momentum as a best practice. This study gathered information from campuses that have adopted sexual assault amnesty into their sexual misconduct policies. A review of existing sexual misconduct policy documents at each of the 50 land-grant institutions was completed to identify existing sexual assault amnesty policies. The policy review was coupled with interviews of Title IX coordinators, which …

Enhancing Grit Through Functional Imagery Training In Professional Soccer, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Functional Imagery Training (FIT) extends multisensory imagery training by involving athletes with goal setting and appraisal. We measured the effect of FIT on 24 professional soccer players’ grit, a personality trait associated with perseverance for a long-term goal. In a stepped-wedge design an immediate (n=9) and delayed (n=10) group received FIT at week 1 or week 6, and were measured at week 12. A self-selected control group (n=5) received no intervention. The delayed group were also measured at week 6 just before their intervention, and week 18. Grit scores in both intervention groups increased following the intervention, but the control …

Interaction Between Musical And Poetic Form Affects Song Popularity: The Case Of The Genevan Psalter, Y Schotanus, V Koops, J Edworthy Jan 2018

Interaction Between Musical And Poetic Form Affects Song Popularity: The Case Of The Genevan Psalter, Y Schotanus, V Koops, J Edworthy

School of Psychology

Differences in the popularity of individual psalms and melodies from the Genevan Psalter, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere, offer an interesting case study for investigating factors that might influence the popularity of a song. The Genevan psalms form a relatively small set of hymns (N = 150) that has long played an important role in Dutch cultural life, and it is clear that some psalms are more popular than others. Previous researchers have shown that contents and musical mode influence popularity. In this article, we present evidence that interaction between melodic and poetical features also affects song popularity, presumably …

Functional Brain Networks Underlying Idiosyncratic Switching Patterns In Multi-Stable Auditory Perception, D Farkas, Sl Denham, I Winkler Jan 2018

Functional Brain Networks Underlying Idiosyncratic Switching Patterns In Multi-Stable Auditory Perception, D Farkas, Sl Denham, I Winkler

School of Psychology

In perceptual multi-stability, perception stochastically switches between alternative interpretations of the stimulus allowing examination of perceptual experience independent of stimulus parameters. Previous studies found that listeners show temporally stable idiosyncratic switching patterns when listening to a multi-stable auditory stimulus, such as in the auditory streaming paradigm. This inter-individual variability can be described along two dimensions, Exploration and Segregation. In the current study, we explored the functional brain networks associated with these dimensions and their constituents using electroencephalography. Results showed that Segregation and its constituents are related to brain networks operating in the theta EEG band, whereas Exploration and its constituents …

The majority of the world's children grow up learning two or more languages. The study of early bilingualism is central to current psycholinguistics, offering insights into issues such as transfer and interference in development. From an applied perspective, it poses a universal challenge to language assessment practices throughout childhood, as typically developing bilingual children usually underperform relative to monolingual norms when assessed in one language only. We measured vocabulary with Communicative Development Inventories for 372 24-month-old toddlers learning British English and one Additional Language out of a diverse set of 13 (Bengali, Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hindi-Urdu, Italian, Mandarin, …
