Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch Dec 2018

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It …

The Desire To Escape And The Inability To Follow Through In James Joyce’S Dubliners, Alyssa M. Wheatley Dec 2018

The Desire To Escape And The Inability To Follow Through In James Joyce’S Dubliners, Alyssa M. Wheatley

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In my research, I will examine James Joyce’s Dubliners as a collection of stories that is unified by an ongoing theme; escape or the desire to escape. In the collection, the want or need to escape serves a major purpose throughout the characters and their lives. This thesis explores five stories that share this theme in particular: “The Sisters,” “Eveline,” “Araby,” “An Encounter,” and “The Dead.” Each story will be discussed in the context of how each story progresses from a want to an actual escape. In addition, the thesis also considers how these stories exhibit a progression towards isolation …

Comparison Of Switched Reluctance Motor And Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor, Nirdesh Neupane Dec 2018

Comparison Of Switched Reluctance Motor And Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor, Nirdesh Neupane

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) and its improved structure Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor (DSSRM). Three configurations of SRM viz. Inner Stator, Outer stator and Double Stator are designed and simulated in ANSYS Maxwell Suite. Design parameters are chosen by aiming optimum performance of motor after literature review and analytical study of the motor. SRM is not a line start machine, so power converter circuit is required to excite the motor. Without proper switching of current, desired torque is not obtained in SRM. The converter circuit and switching unit is built …

Automating The Detection Of Precipitation And Wind Characteristics In Navy Ocean Acoustic Data, Joseph T. Kuhner Dec 2018

Automating The Detection Of Precipitation And Wind Characteristics In Navy Ocean Acoustic Data, Joseph T. Kuhner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A challenge in Underwater Acoustics is identifying the independent variables associated with an environment’s ambient noise. A strict definition of ambient noise would focus on non-transient signatures and exclude transient impacts from marine mammals, pelagic fish species, man-made sources, or weather events such as precipitation or wind speeds. Recognizing transient signatures in acoustic spectra is an essential element for providing environmental intelligence to the U.S. Navy, specifically the acoustic signatures from meteorological events. While weather event detection in acoustic spectra has been shown in previous studies, leveraging these concepts via U.S. Navy assets is largely an unknown. Environmental intelligence collection …

Numerical Simulation Of Dropped Cylindrical Objects Into Water In Two Dimensions (2d), Yi Zhen Dec 2018

Numerical Simulation Of Dropped Cylindrical Objects Into Water In Two Dimensions (2d), Yi Zhen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The dropped objects are identified as one of the top ten causes of fatalities and serious injuries in the oil and gas industry. It is of importance to understand dynamics of dropped objects under water in order to accurately predict the motion of dropped objects and protect the underwater structures and facilities from being damaged. In this thesis, we study nondimensionalization of dynamic equations of dropped cylindrical objects. Nondimensionalization helps to reduce the number of free parameters, identify the relative size of effects of parameters, and gain a deeper insight of the essential nature of dynamics of dropped cylindrical objects …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Recycled Crushed Glass Cullet For Use As An Aggregate In Beach Nourishment And Marsh Creation Projects In Southeastern Louisiana, John C. Wildman Dec 2018

Laboratory Evaluation Of Recycled Crushed Glass Cullet For Use As An Aggregate In Beach Nourishment And Marsh Creation Projects In Southeastern Louisiana, John C. Wildman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To combat the rapid degradation of the Louisiana coast, the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has planned strategic land building initiatives throughout the Louisiana Gulf coast, including beach nourishment and marsh creation projects. It is commonly agreed that the state lacks sufficient renewable sediment resources to maintain the planned CPRA land building program. However, Louisiana, the state that commonly ranks last in state recycling percentage, recycles an estimated 0.6% of the waste glass consumed in the state. Glass is predominantly silica sand. This thesis evaluates laboratory‑determined characteristics of recycled crushed glass cullet to assess its suitability as a renewable …

Vertical And Lateral Hydraulic Connectivity Of The Wilcox Formation For Tiber Field And The Outbound Structural Province Of Keathley Canyon And Walker Ridge, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, William F. Morrison Dec 2018

Vertical And Lateral Hydraulic Connectivity Of The Wilcox Formation For Tiber Field And The Outbound Structural Province Of Keathley Canyon And Walker Ridge, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, William F. Morrison

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Hydraulic connectivity for the Tiber field and 17 other Wilcox penetrations in Keathley Canyon (KC) and 5 fields in Walker Ridge (WR) protraction areas was assessed. All five chronostratigraphic Wilcox units are not in vertical communication across both protraction areas. Four of these units are in lateral communication across Tiber field except where faults isolate portions of the structure. Five “areas of connectivity,” where two or more fields are in communication, were found in KC. The fields in WR show no evidence of connectivity despite a relatively simpler structural environment than KC. I propose that the wells in WR are …

The Effects Of Sediment Properties On Barrier Island Morphology And Processes: A Numerical Modeling Experiment, Brittany Kime Dec 2018

The Effects Of Sediment Properties On Barrier Island Morphology And Processes: A Numerical Modeling Experiment, Brittany Kime

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Barrier island restoration and nourishment is necessary for sustaining coastal systems worldwide. In the Mississippi River Delta Plain, the lack of sediment supply, relative sea level rise, and reworking of abandoned delta lobes promote rapid disintegration of barriers, which can contribute to mainland storm impacts. Barrier island restorations that utilize higher quality sediments (Outer Continental Shelf- OCS) are expected to exhibit higher resiliency, withstanding coastal erosion, event-induced erosion, and ongoing transgression when compared to barriers nourished using lower quality nearshore (NS) sands. Additionally, use of OCS sediments increases sediment supply by adding material to the system supporting increased barrier longevity …

“Your Love Is Too Thick”: An Analysis Of Black Motherhood In Slave Narratives, Neo-Slave Narratives, And Our Contemporary Moment, Kaitlyn M. Spong Dec 2018

“Your Love Is Too Thick”: An Analysis Of Black Motherhood In Slave Narratives, Neo-Slave Narratives, And Our Contemporary Moment, Kaitlyn M. Spong

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, Kait Spong examines alternative practices of mothering that are strategic nature, heavily analyzing Patricia Hill Collins’ concepts of “othermothering” and “preservative love” as applied to Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel, Beloved and Harriet Jacob’s 1861 slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Using literary analysis as a vehicle, Spong then applies these West African notions of motherhood to a modern context by evaluating contemporary social movements such as Black Lives Matter where black mothers have played a prominent role in making public statements against systemic issues such as police brutality, heightened surveillance, and the …

Multivariate Multiple Regression Models Of Poly(Ethylene-Terephthalate) Film Degradation Under Outdoor And Multi-Stressor Accelerated Weathering Exposures, Devin A. Gordon, Wei-Heng Huang, Roger H. French, Laura S. Bruckman Dec 2018

Multivariate Multiple Regression Models Of Poly(Ethylene-Terephthalate) Film Degradation Under Outdoor And Multi-Stressor Accelerated Weathering Exposures, Devin A. Gordon, Wei-Heng Huang, Roger H. French, Laura S. Bruckman

Faculty Scholarship

Developing materials for use in photovoltaic (PV) systems requires knowledge of their performance over the warranted lifetime of the PV system. Poly(ethylene-terephthalate) (PET) is a critical component of PV module backsheets due to its dielectric properties and low cost. However, PET is susceptible to environmental stressors and degrades over time. Changes in the physical properties of nine PET grades were modeled after outdoor and accelerated weathering exposures to characterize the degradation process of PET and assess the influence of stabilizing additives and weathering factors. Multivariate multiple regression (MMR) models were developed to quantify changes in color, gloss, and haze of …

Regulators Of Oncogenic Mutant Tp53 Gain Of Function., Satomi Yamamoto, Tomoo Iwakuma Dec 2018

Regulators Of Oncogenic Mutant Tp53 Gain Of Function., Satomi Yamamoto, Tomoo Iwakuma

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The tumor suppressor p53 (TP53) is the most frequently mutated human gene. Mutations in TP53 not only disrupt its tumor suppressor function, but also endow oncogenic gain-of-function (GOF) activities in a manner independent of wild-type TP53 (wtp53). Mutant TP53 (mutp53) GOF is mainly mediated by its binding with other tumor suppressive or oncogenic proteins. Increasing evidence indicates that stabilization of mutp53 is crucial for its GOF activity. However, little is known about factors that alter mutp53 stability and its oncogenic GOF activities. In this review article, we primarily summarize key regulators of mutp53 stability/activities, including genotoxic stress, post-translational modifications, ubiquitin …

Geologic Map And Structural Development Of The Noerthernmost Sur-Nacimiento Fault Zone, Central California Coast, Scott M. Johnston, John S. Singleton, Alan D. Chapman, Gabriella Murray Dec 2018

Geologic Map And Structural Development Of The Noerthernmost Sur-Nacimiento Fault Zone, Central California Coast, Scott M. Johnston, John S. Singleton, Alan D. Chapman, Gabriella Murray

Physics

The Sur-Nacimiento fault exposed along the central California coast (United States) juxtaposes the Salinian block arc against the Nacimiento block accretionary complex, cuts out the majority of the forearc basin and western arc, and requires a minimum of 150 km of orogen-normal crustal excision within the Mesozoic California convergent margin. Despite this significant strain, the kinematic evolution of the Sur-Nacimiento fault remains poorly understood, with diverse hypotheses suggesting sinistral, dextral, thrust, or normal displacement along the fault. This Late Cretaceous–Paleogene strain history is complicated by the location of the fault within a belt of subparallel faults that have accommodated significant …

Fine-Grained Topic Models Using Anchor Words, Jeffrey A. Lund Dec 2018

Fine-Grained Topic Models Using Anchor Words, Jeffrey A. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Topic modeling is an effective tool for analyzing the thematic content of large collections of text. However, traditional probabilistic topic modeling is limited to a small number of topics (typically no more than hundreds). We introduce fine-grained topic models, which have large numbers of nuanced and specific topics. We demonstrate that fine-grained topic models enable use cases not currently possible with current topic modeling techniques, including an automatic cross-referencing task in which short passages of text are linked to other topically related passages. We do so by leveraging anchor methods, a recent class of topic model based on non-negative matrix …

The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott Dec 2018

The Role Of Resilience Among K-12 Principals And Administrators Leading Transformational Change, Paige Evans Wescott

Education Dissertations

Abstract

The United States government holds high expectations for principals and administrators, as they are responsible for enacting significant change to actualize school improvement and meet national agendas. Schools have specific characteristics that make change extremely challenging to implement, and it is within this context that fostering resilience holds promise. This study was a quantitative, correlational study that looked critically at the relationship between self-perceived resilience and self-perceived transformational leadership among US principals and administrators in K-12 settings. Peer-reviewed research studies addressing resilience and transformational leadership in K-12 education have been minimal, although similar questions in research continue to be …

Structure And Function In Petioles Of Pelargonium, Dustin M. Ray Dec 2018

Structure And Function In Petioles Of Pelargonium, Dustin M. Ray

Doctoral Dissertations

As the connection between lamina and stem, petioles are essential for plant survival. Petioles serve two major functions in service to the leaf blade. First, they hold the leaf blade away from the stem to reduce self-shading and optimize light interception, a mechanical function. Second, petioles serve as the bridge between the stem and lamina allowing water to move up the plant body and photo-assimilates to move down to the plant body from the leaf blade, a physiological function. While mechanics and physiology have been studied independently, the petiole could be a space-limited structure leading to tradeoffs between the two …

Power In Pairs: Assessing The Statistical Value Of Paired Samples In Tests For Differential Expression, John R. Stevens, Jennifer S. Herrick, Roger K. Wolff, Martha L. Slattery

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: When genomics researchers design a high-throughput study to test for differential expression, some biological systems and research questions provide opportunities to use paired samples from subjects, and researchers can plan for a certain proportion of subjects to have paired samples. We consider the effect of this paired samples proportion on the statistical power of the study, using characteristics of both count (RNA-Seq) and continuous (microarray) expression data from a colorectal cancer study.

Results: We demonstrate that a higher proportion of subjects with paired samples yields higher statistical power, for various total numbers of samples, and for various strengths of …

Micromagnetic Study On The Magnetization Reversal Of Barium Hexaferrite (Bafe12o19) Thin Film, Dede Djuhana, Dita Oktri, Candra Kurniawan

Makara Journal of Science

This study investigates a magnetization reversal mechanism based on the hysteresis curve of Barium Hexaferrite (BFO) thin film by micromagnetic simulation through parallel and perpendicular magnetization directions along the axes. The hexagonal shape of the BFO film was modeled with thicknesses of 5, 10, and 15 nm and a diameter size ranging from 50 to 100 nm. It was found that the coercivity field HC and the saturation field HS of the BFO film decreased as thediameter size increased and thickness decreased. It was observed that the nucleation field HN increased as the diametersize increased. An analysis of energies showed …

Influences Of Zn Concentration On Dielectric Properties Of Znxni1-Xfe2o4 Magnetic Nanoparticles, Edi Suharyadi, Dwi Indah Rahayu, Linda Armitasari, Kamsul Abraha

Makara Journal of Science

Dielectric properties of ZnxNi1-xFe2O4magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with various Zn concentration (x = 0.2-0.8) havebeen investigated over a wide frequency range 5–120 kHz. Zn-Ni ferriteMNPs have spinel cubic structure. Thecrystallite size of the sample for x = 0.2 was about 21.5 nm and then decreases by increasing Zn concentration. For sample with x = 0.4 at frequency 20 kHz, the real dielectric constant (ε') was 35.9, imaginary dielectric constant (ε") was 20.4 and loss tangent (tanδ) was 0.6. Zn concentration would affect to availability of ferrous and ferric ions in the octahedral site which are preferentially occupied by Zn2+ion. The dielectric …

The Influence Of Nutrient (N And P) Enrichment And Ratios On Phytoplankton Abundance In Keunekai Waters, Wehisland, Indonesia, Ulung Jantama Wisha, Koko Ondara, Ilham Ilham

Makara Journal of Science

The Keunekai waters around Weh Island, Indonesia, have become a prone coastal area because of degradation from climate anomalies and anthropogenic pressure. The high level of coral mortality caused by mass bleaching and fish bombing several years ago may have led to the deterioration of the water conditions and the disruption of the biogeo-chemical cycle, resulting in potential nutrient enrichment and algae blooms (eutrophication). This study aimed to de-termine the influence of nutrient ratios on phytoplankton abundance and monitor the existing waterconditions aroundKeunekai. Spectrophotometry analysis was used to determine the concentrations of the nutrients, and the Sedgewick-Rafter counting method was …
