Dose Analysis Of Gadolinium Neutron Capture Therapy (Gdnct) On Cancer Using Shield-Hit12a, Fasni Bagus Novrianto, Sardjono Yohannes, Lapanporo Boni Pahlanop

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This research aimed to determine the dose of radiation received in cancer therapy for each decay of Gadolinium atomic nuclei with isotope 157 (157Gd) in Gadolinium Neutron Capture Therapy using the SHIELD-HIT12A program. Knowing the amount of dose given to cancer tissue should aid in minimizing the damage that could occur in the healthy tissue around the cancer tissue, effectively killing only the cancer cells. The simulation employed in this research used the SHIELD-HIT12A program by providing input on beam.dat, mat.dat, detect.dat, and geo.dat files. The output data from the program comprised the value of recoil energy lost (energy absorbed …

Analysis Of Radiation Interactions And Biological Effects For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, Chiang Ren-Tai Dec 2018

Analysis Of Radiation Interactions And Biological Effects For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, Chiang Ren-Tai

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The direct and indirect ionizing radiation sources for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT)are identi?ed. The mechanisms of physical, chemical and biological radiation interactions for BNCT are systematically described and analyzed. The relationship between the effect of biological radiation and radiation dose are illustrated and analyzed for BNCT. If the DNAs in chromosomes are damaged by ion- izing radiations, the instructions that control the cell function and reproduction are also damaged. This radiation damage may be reparable, irreparable, or incorrectly repaired. The irreparable damage can result in cell death at next mitosis while incorrectly repaired damage can result in mutation. Cell …

Afterschool interventions in STEM are linked to learning gains during the school day. These opportunities engage and excite students about STEM concepts since they observe a more hands-on, project-oriented approach. Often these opportunities for afterschool interventions are infrequent in nature and leave gaps for students in their maturation and understanding. Herein we describe the first report of an afterschool intervention, named NE STEM 4U, targeting socioeconomically disadvantaged middle school youth via a twice weekly, year-long intervention, studied across two years. We assessed the impact of this program on i.) short-term, individual student gains in STEM content knowledge and ii.) delivery …

Zombies And Immune Discourses In Hazael González’S “Luna De Sangre Sobre Lepanto”, Kiersty Lemon-Rogers Dec 2018

Zombies And Immune Discourses In Hazael González’S “Luna De Sangre Sobre Lepanto”, Kiersty Lemon-Rogers

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

Using immune discourse to examine zombies in González’s “Luna de sangre,” I argue that his zombies function as embodied manifestations of physical, spiritual, and cultural contagion. The ideas of Roberto Esposito, Priscilla Wald, Mabel Moraña, Sarah J. Lauro and Karen Embry, put into conversation with González’s tale, help illuminate how the author uses monstrosity to demarcate the Other and define it as those who exist outside of the human, the normative, and more generally outside of the Western social order. The historical and contemporary context of “Luna de sangre” is one of nationalism, bigotry, walls, and anti-Islamic and anti-Semitic sentiment. …

Investigating Diversity In Social Work Doctoral Education In The United States, Matthew Chin, Jaclynn Hawkins, Amy Krings, Carolyn Peguero-Spencer, Lorraine Gutiérrez

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Despite its emphasis on social justice, social work in the United States has not always attended to issues of diversity in doctoral education. This article examines the state of the discipline’s research on traditionally underrepresented students in U.S. doctoral social work programs. An analysis of relevant peer-reviewed articles from social work journals revealed that this research has focused on demographic trends, degree motivation, student barriers, existing supports, and career navigation. Diversity in U.S. doctoral social work education is vastly understudied with the majority of scholarship focusing on ethnoracial difference. The limitations of this study are discussed, and future research directions …

Preseason Y Balance Test Scores Are Not Associated With Noncontact Time-Loss Lower Quadrant Injury In Male Collegiate Basketball Players, Jason Brumitt, Kyle Nelson, Duane Duey, Matthew Jeppson, Luke Hammer

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

The Y-Balance Test-Lower Quarter has shown promise as a screening tool for identifying athletes at risk of injury. Subsequent studies, utilizing heterogeneous populations or different operational definitions of injury, have presented equivocal findings. Therefore, studies evaluating the efficacy of the Y-Balance Test to discriminate injury risk in a homogeneous population is warranted. One-hundred sixty-nine male (mean age 19.9 + 1.5 y) collegiate basketball players were recruited during 2 consecutive seasons (2016–2017/2017–2018). Athletes completed the Y-Balance testing protocol at the start of each preseason. Athletic trainers tracked noncontact time-loss lower quadrant injuries over the course of the season. Receiver operator characteristic …

Come Together: Interdepartmental Collaboration To Connect The Ir And Library Catalog, Amanda Makula

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

While institutional repositories (IRs) often include a built-in search tool and/or are indexed by Web search engines, some patrons go directly to the online library catalog with their information need. Rather than hope that users will stumble upon the IR from the library website or assume that they will start their research with a Google search, librarians can enhance IR discoverability and usage by integrating its content into the library catalog. With strong teamwork, good communication, and a shared vision, this endeavor transforms the IR and library catalog from separate, siloed platforms into a more cohesive collections package. At the …

West Nile virus (WNV) infection results in a spectrum of neurological symptoms, ranging from a benign fever to severe WNV neuroinvasive disease with high mortality. Many who recover from WNV neuroinvasive infection present with long-term deficits, including weakness, fatigue, and cognitive problems. While neurons are a main target of WNV, other cell types, especially astrocytes, play an important role in promoting WNV-mediated central nervous system (CNS) damage. Conversely, it has been shown that cultured primary astrocytes secrete high levels of interferons (IFNs) immediately after WNV exposure to protect neighboring astrocytes, as well as neurons. However, how intrinsic responses to WNV …

Many Labs 2: Investigating Variation In Replicability Across Samples And Settings, Richard A. Klein, Michelangelo Vianello, Susan L. O'Donnell, Et Al

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings, with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance, to examine variation in effect magnitudes across samples and settings. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples that comprised 15,305 participants from 36 countries and territories. Using the conventional criterion of statistical significance (p < .05), we found that 15 (54%) of the replications provided evidence of a statistically significant effect in the same direction as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p < .0001), 14 (50%) of the replications still provided such evidence, a reflection of the extremely highpowered design. Seven (25%) of the replications yielded effect sizes larger than the original ones, and 21 (75%) yielded effect sizes smaller than the original ones. The median comparable Cohen’s ds were 0.60 for the original findings and 0.15 for the replications. The effect sizes were small (< 0.20) in 16 of the replications (57%), and 9 effects (32%) were in the direction opposite the direction of the original effect. Across settings, the Q statistic indicated significant heterogeneity in 11 (39%) of the replication effects, and most of those were among the findings with the largest overall effect sizes; only 1 effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity according to this measure. Only 1 effect had a tau value greater than .20, an indication of moderate heterogeneity. Eight others had tau values near or slightly above .10, an indication of slight heterogeneity. Moderation tests indicated that very little heterogeneity was attributable to the order in which the tasks were performed or whether the tasks were administered in lab versus online. Exploratory comparisons revealed little heterogeneity between Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) cultures and less WEIRD cultures (i.e., cultures with relatively high and low WEIRDness scores, respectively). Cumulatively, variability in the observed effect sizes was attributable more to the effect being studied than to the sample or setting in which it was studied.

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

This study was undertaken to derive and analyze the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - EOS (AMSR-E) sea surface temperature (SST) footprint associated with the Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) Level-2 (L2) product. The footprint, in this case, is characterized by the weight attributed to each 4x4 km square contributing to the SST value of a given AMSR-E pixel. High-resolution L2 SST fields obtained from the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), carried on the same spacecraft as AMSR-E, are used as the sub-resolution “ground truth“ from which the AMSR-E footprint is determined. Mathematically, the approach is equivalent to a linear inversion problem, and …

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur in 1.7 million people each year in the USA. Little is known about how the cerebrovasculature is altered after TBI. We previously reported that TBI elicits acute decrements in cerebral vessels near the injury site in rats followed by revascularization over the subsequent 2 weeks. Sexual dimorphism of the brain is well documented and different hormonal levels in males and females differentially modify the recovery process after injury. However, the effects of biological sex on the temporal evolution of revascularization following TBI are understudied. Using a model of controlled cortical impact in male and female …

A Case Of Pituitary Apoplexy Complicating The Management Of Sepsis, Victor R. Laluz Md, Kevin Codorniz

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Pituitary apoplexy is a condition of sudden hemorrhage into the pituitary gland, usually at the site of a pituitary adenoma, occurring in 8% of pituitary macroadenomas. The clinical presentation of pituitary apoplexy varies based upon the timing and mechanism of pituitary mass expansion towards the optic nerve or hypothalamus, as well as the hormonal function of the neoplasm and remaining pituitary gland tissue. Nearly all patients present with headache (97%), and fewer patients present with visual field impairment (71%). Pituitary apoplexy acutely disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and may lead to relative adrenal insufficiency in septic shock, with a high …

Single Lower Border Plate Fixation In Anterior Mandibular Fractures, Ted Park, Kathleen Lopez, D Nguyen, Mark Martin

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Repair of symphyseal and parasymphyseal mandibular fractures is traditionally performed with a lower border plate and either an upper border microplate or arch bars as a tension band. Complications of microplates include wound dehiscence, plate exposure, and tooth root injury. Issues with arch bars include increased operative time, a second procedure for removal, risk of TMJ ankylosis, and risk of injury to the operative team. We propose that one lower border plate is adequate for simple fractures of the anterior mandible and will serve to minimize complications.

Evaluating Estradiol As A Novel Therapy For Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration/Geographic Atrophy, Daniel Lee, Paula Fukuhara, Mc Kenney

Loma Linda University Student Journal

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in the elderly population in the United States and is more prevalent in post-menopausal females than age-matched males. There are no current FDA-approved therapies for dry AMD, which composes 80- 90% of all AMD cases. Late stage dry AMD (geographic atrophy) is characterized by extensive loss of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) along with degeneration of the photoreceptors, which cause significant central vision loss. AMD is characterized by drusen, which are extracellular deposits located beneath the retina. Drusen contain proteins associated with the process of inflammation such …
