Cognitive Factors In Higher Education Students: Goals, Mindset, And Internalized Motivation, Mary Kovach
Cognitive Factors In Higher Education Students: Goals, Mindset, And Internalized Motivation, Mary Kovach
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
This manuscript demonstrates the value of understanding three cognitive factors in higher education. These three cognitive factors (i.e. goals, mindset, and internalized motivation) provide educators with the ability to enhance academic outcomes and to motivate students towards achievement. Each cognitive factor is dissected and applied to students in the higher education classroom. Additionally, research is presented to create a motivational atmosphere, specifically within the classroom environment, that will improve student mindset and develop stronger academic goals for students. Lastly, this manuscript proposes suggestions for future research that will contribute to the findings of the overall construct of motivation in an …

Unmasking Of Impostor Syndrome, Aishwarya Joshi, Haley Mangette
Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education
Members of minority populations are forced to hide behind a mask of stereotypes others associate to them. Individuals who feel fraudulent when they fulfill certain stereotypes, associate their success to external forces, define the problem as impostor syndrome (IS). The paper focuses on the prevalence and relevance of IS on college campuses. The session will explore the affect and effect of IS from different cultural lenses and discuss possible preventive and coping strategies for academic and mental health professionals. The purpose is to ‘unmask’ the impostor syndrome caused by stereotypes and stereotype threats that prevents individuals from reaching ‘new heights’ …

2000 - Water Conveyance Systems In California
Related Research and Documents
This report offers a thematic approach to the identification and evaluation of the major types of water conveyance systems found in California. In the past, canals were not always recognized as a type of cultural resource that might need study. Now there is increased awareness that canals and other water conveyance facilities can be historically significant. However, important water conveyance systems are frequently extensive and sometimes quite complex, while transportation project effects on them are typically limited to a small segment of the entire property. Under these circumstances, developing a basic historical context would allow researchers to work from a …

Obfuscation And Anonymization Techniques For Network Data Sets For Machine Learning, Ralf Rantzau, Sebastian Jeuk, Gonzalo Salgueiro
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques are described herein for securing data used for a machine learning algorithm. The frequency or top-k values calculated over time of the respective network traffic feature data sets are used instead of the actual data or a set thereof (this can also be extended to any other data sets). Here, the frequency represents the actual data and thereby obfuscates potential sensitive information that should not be used within an oftentimes shared cloud machine learning application.

The Social And Political Life Of A Relic: The Episode Of The Moi-E-Muqaddas Theft In Kashmir, 1963-1964, Idrees Kanth
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The present article is focused on the relationship between a sacred object: the moi-e-muqaddas (the Prophet’s hair), housed in the Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir, and the Kashmiri Muslim community. The relic, which was stolen from the shrine on 27 December 1963, lead to a massive protest in the Kashmir valley and in other parts of the subcontinent, as people demanded its immediate recovery. Such thefts, which have been reported from across the world and across centuries, point to the extreme value of the relics, and the additional value they generate when they are stolen. Similarly, the Hazratbal relic theft became …

Reflections On The Post-Partition Period: Life Narratives Of Kashmiri Muslims In Contemporary Kashmir, Hafsa Kanjwal
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article examines the political subjectivities of the first generation of post-Partition Kashmiri Muslims and presents their life narratives, both written and oral, as an important vantage point from which to understand shifts in Kashmiri Muslim society in the early post-Partition period. It also explores how these narratives are mediated by the respondent's present, a period after the militancy of the late eighties and nineties, but one in which there remains a mass uprising against Indian rule. This generation was important for a number of reasons. One, they witnessed the erosion of Kashmir’s autonomy and the promises of a plebiscite, …

Harnessing The Anopheles Microbiome To Conditionally Express Anti-Plasmodial Effectors During The Blood Meal, Jackie Shane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The control of vector-borne diseases such as malaria has been an extremely important research subject for hundreds of years. Because of the complex lifecycles of the pathogens that cause these diseases, finding a comprehensive treatment or preventative strategy has proven extremely difficult. Malaria alone is responsible for almost half a million deaths annually, most of them children under 5 years old. This disease is caused by parasitic protists in the genus Plasmodium that are transmitted to humans from Anopheles sp. mosquitoes. Most preventative strategies that are in use today revolve around controlling the vectors, including bed nets, insecticides, and larval …

Arenaviruses are a significant cause of hemorrhagic fever, an often-fatal disease for which there is no approved antiviral therapy. Lassa fever in particular generates high morbidity and mortality in West Africa, where the disease is endemic, and a recent outbreak in Nigeria was larger and more geographically diverse than usual. We are developing LHF-535, a small-molecule viral entry inhibitor that targets the arenavirus envelope glycoprotein, as a therapeutic candidate for Lassa fever and other hemorrhagic fevers of arenavirus origin. Using a lentiviral pseudotype infectivity assay, we determined that LHF-535 had sub-nanomolar potency against the viral envelope glycoproteins from all Lassa …

Maker competencies are the skills, talents and dispositions that one acquires or improves upon while problem-solving and working on projects in makerspaces or similar learning environments. However, while learners can develop any number of technology-specific competencies while working in makerspaces, dependent on the types of technology made available within the specific makerspace, this list of competencies is better defined as the higher-level, technology-agnostic, transferable skills and talents that one may acquire or strengthen when working in makerspaces. A quick review of the list of competencies will reveal no mention of 3D printers, Arduinos, or any of the other popular technologies …

1998 - Salinas Valley Water (Preliminary Analysis Of) The Cause And Cost Of Seawater Intrusion
Miscellaneous Monterey and San Luis Obispo County Documents and Reports
An analysis of the historical cause of seawater intrusion in the Pressure Area of Monterey County. An annual overdraft of groundwater resources near the coast coupled with a seasonal cycle of over pumping created a reversal in the groundwater gradient and associated cones of depression. "Marine intrusion has occurred in the 180-foot aquifer in recent years as a result of overdrafts." (Bulletin 52, 1946, p.27). The only overdrafts on groundwater in the Salinas Valley were in the East Side and Pressure Areas. "There was no shortage of groundwater in the remainder of the basin and no threat of deficiency under …

Beyond Enlightenment: The Evolution Of Agency And The Modularity Of The Mind In A Post-Darwinian World, Derek Elliott
Beyond Enlightenment: The Evolution Of Agency And The Modularity Of The Mind In A Post-Darwinian World, Derek Elliott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Working out of the social and philosophical revolutions from the Enlightenment, contemporary action theory has unwittingly inherited several Cartesian ideas regarding the human mind: that it is unified, rational, and transparent. As a result, we have for too long conceived of action as intimately bound up with reason such that to act at all is to act for a reason, leaving us with theoretical difficulties in accounting for the behavior of non-human animals as well as irrational behavior in human beings.
But rather than propose that such difficulties can be resolved by retreating to a pre-Enlightenment view of human nature, …

This research explored perceptions of female sportscasters. More specifically, this study aimed to better understand how Turkish male television viewers perceive female sportscasters. Male hegemony established the theoretical basis to understand male domination that is prevalent in sports, media and also heavily in Turkish culture. Sexual objectification of women was also helpful to better understand the status of women working in the media industry. Semi-structured, qualitative in-depth interviews were used to gather data. Twenty-one interviews were done, transcribed, and analyzed. The findings of this research indicated the male hegemonic environment of sports and also sports media, in the eyes of …
Interpolation And Extrapolation Of Missing Antenna Measurement Datasets Using The Cauchy Method And Matrix Pencil Method, Nicolas Reginelli
Interpolation And Extrapolation Of Missing Antenna Measurement Datasets Using The Cauchy Method And Matrix Pencil Method, Nicolas Reginelli
Theses - ALL
As electromagnetic systems become more complex, the computational time and power required to solve these large problems will also increase. It is thus of practical interest to apply methods of interpolation and extrapolation to reduce the amount of data required for accurate computation. Two such approaches of the implementation of interpolation and extrapolation examined in this thesis are the Cauchy method and the Matrix Pencil method.
This thesis explores the theory, process, and application of the Cauchy method and Matrix Pencil method in interpolating and extrapolating performance metrics of various electromagnetic systems. The Cauchy method begins by assuming that an …

Adobe is a traditional construction technique found in historic and new construction throughout the world, often in earthquake-prone regions. Adobe structures are particularly susceptible to seismic forces due to their substantial mass and low tensile capacity. In addition, adobe is affected negatively by moisture that may penetrate from the ground or through the plaster. This paper describes the preliminary findings of an experimental program to investigate the effect of higher water content in the lower part of the wall on the wall strength behaviour under lateral loading. Lateral load tests were conducted on two quarter-scale adobe walls, one in air-dry …
