Transgenic Mice Overexpressing Human Tnf-Α Experience Early Onset Spontaneous Intervertebral Disc Herniation In The Absence Of Overt Degeneration., Deborah J. Gorth, Irving M. Shapiro, Makarand V. Risbud

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

There is a well-established link between cytokine expression and the progression of intervertebral disc degeneration. Among these cytokines, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) are the most commonly studied. To investigate whether systemic hTNF-α overexpression affects intervertebral disc health, we studied the spine phenotype of Tg197 mice, a widely used hTNF-α transgenic line. These mice were studied at 12-16 weeks of age using comprehensive histochemical and immunohistological analysis of the spinal motion segment. Micro-CT analysis was performed to quantify vertebral trabecular bone architecture. The Tg197 mice evidenced spontaneous annular tears and herniation with increased vascularity in subchondral bone and …

Syndemics Of Severity And Frequency Of Elder Abuse: A Cross-Sectional Study In Mexican Older Females, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Pablo Gaitán-Rossi Dec 2018

Syndemics Of Severity And Frequency Of Elder Abuse: A Cross-Sectional Study In Mexican Older Females, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Pablo Gaitán-Rossi

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: Elder abuse is a common phenomenon with important effects on the health and well-being of older adults. There are important gaps in elder abuse measurement, as it is usually reported as the absence or presence of elder abuse, disregarding its severity and frequency.

Objectives: Identify different ways of measuring severity and frequency of elder abuse and assess whether different experiences of severity and frequency suggest syndemic relationships.

Methods: Through a sample of 534 non-institutionalized Mexican older women, we assessed how severity (i.e., number of abusive experiences and number of types of abuses) and frequency (i.e., if abusive experiences had …

Noise And Gain Characterization Of Interband Cascade Infrared Photodetectors, Eli A. Garduño

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Infrared (IR) detectors are an enabling technology for a broad and growing list of applications including gas detection, night vision, and space-based missile warning. There are ongoing efforts in IR detector research to explore the potential of new material systems and energy band structures in addition to continuously improving their sensitivity through increasing their quantum efficiency and lowering their dark current and noise. This dissertation examines an emerging class of IR detectors known as Interband Cascade Infrared Photodetectors (ICIPs).

ICIPs contain multiple regions to facilitate the collection of photogenerated electrons and to limit unwanted dark current. Theory regarding their performance …

Voluntary Sterilization Of Inmates For Reduced Prison Sentences, Elise B. Adams Dec 2018

Voluntary Sterilization Of Inmates For Reduced Prison Sentences, Elise B. Adams

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

In May 2017, a Tennessee judge issued a standing order allowing inmates to receive thirty days’ jail credit in exchange for undergoing a voluntary sterilization procedure. Although the order was ultimately rescinded, this Article will address the constitutional and ethical concerns that a district court would have considered had the order not been rescinded. While inmates can always choose to waive their constitutional rights, the coercive nature of prisons—explained in the unconstitutional conditions doctrine—may compromise a prisoner’s ability to provide voluntary consent. The constitutionality of the order largely depends on the level of scrutiny a court applies. Regardless of the …

Using Federal Nondiscrimination Laws To Avoid Erisa: Securing Protection From Transgender Discrimination In Employee Health Benefit Plans, Bridget Schaaff Dec 2018

Using Federal Nondiscrimination Laws To Avoid Erisa: Securing Protection From Transgender Discrimination In Employee Health Benefit Plans, Bridget Schaaff

Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy

Recent attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the potential rollback of the interpretation of the protections the Act affords transgender people put transgender people at risk of being denied services and coverage for gender-affirming care. This Article provides advocates with alternative legal arguments to help employees bring claims when their employer provides a health benefit plan that discriminates on the basis of gender identity. These arguments can avoid the Employee Retirement Income Security Act’s broad preemption scheme and lack of nondiscrimination provisions. This Article proposes that, based on a narrow exception to preemption regarding the Employee Retirement Income …

Agility And Resilience As Antecedents Of Supply Chain Performance Under Moderating Effects Of Organizational Culture Within Humanitarian Setting: A Dynamic Capability View, N Altay, A Gunasekaran, R Dubey, Sj Childe

Plymouth Business School

This study examines the effects of supply chain agility and supply chain resilience on performance under the moderating effect of organizational culture. We have used the dynamic capability view to conceptualize our theoretical models for different phases of humanitarian supply chain (pre-disaster and post-disaster phases). These phases do not have clear boundaries, but overlap chronologically, as well as in terms of ongoing activities. We used partial least squares (PLS) to examine our proposed research hypotheses using 335 responses gathered from organizations in India using survey based questionnaires designed for a single respondent. The results from our data suggest that SCAG …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is currently one of the leading causes of death from an infectious agent. The main difficulties encountered in eradicating this bacteria are mainly related to (i) a very complex lipid composition of the bacillus cell wall, (ii) its ability to hide from the immune system inside the granulomas, and (iii) the increasing number of resistant strains. In this context, we were interested in the Rv0646c (lipGMTB) gene located upstream to the mmaA cluster which is described as being crucial for the production of cell wall components and required for the bacilli adaptation and survival in …

Relationships Between Aprn State Practice Authority, Perceived Autonomy, Professionalism, And Interprofessional Team Function Among A National Sample Of Aprns In The U.S., Patricia Rae Gilman Dec 2018

Relationships Between Aprn State Practice Authority, Perceived Autonomy, Professionalism, And Interprofessional Team Function Among A National Sample Of Aprns In The U.S., Patricia Rae Gilman

Nursing ETDs

Healthcare that includes high performing interprofessional clinical teams (IPTs) is one recommended strategy to provide optimal quality and cost-effective care delivery. Highly functional IPTs are characterized by effective communication, trust, respect, collaboration, information-sharing, and conflict resolution and are more efficient than individual providers working alone. Internally, IPT members’ relationships and understanding of both one’s own professional identity and others’ role and responsibilities are crucial to team functionality and effectiveness. Externally, factors including regulatory practice environments might influence the effectiveness and performance of both individual team members and the team overall. Inconsistencies between states’ practice authority (SPA) for advanced practice nurses …

Revision Of The Central Asian Scorpion Genus Anomalobuthus Kraepelin, 1900, With Descriptions Of Three New Species And A Generic Synonymy (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík, Victor Fet Dec 2018

Revision Of The Central Asian Scorpion Genus Anomalobuthus Kraepelin, 1900, With Descriptions Of Three New Species And A Generic Synonymy (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík, Victor Fet

Euscorpius

We revise the Central Asian endemic genus Anomalobuthus Kraepelin, 1900, which was considered monotypic for more than 100 years until the recent addition of a second species from Iran (Teruel et al., 2014). We redefine the generic diagnosis of Anomalobuthus and reveal that it is composed of no less than six species, three of which are described as new: A. krivochatskyi, sp. n. (central Uzbekistan and extreme southern Kazakhstan), A. lowei, sp. n. (southeastern Kazakhstan), and A. pavlovskyi, sp. n. (south-central Kazakhstan and extreme northern Turkmenistan). The monotypic genus Psammobuthus Birula, 1911 (described from the Ferghana Valley …

Narrating The Collapse: The Use And Limits Of A Phenomenology Of Depression, James Bodington Dec 2018

Narrating The Collapse: The Use And Limits Of A Phenomenology Of Depression, James Bodington

Philosophy ETDs

This project is an attempt to apply certain of the insights of phenomenological philosophy to the analysis of the lived experience of depression. I argue that the centering of experience in phenomenology can, and should, motivate its use in the context of the philosophical analysis of mental health, and may contribute to therapeutic aims as well. While this has been remarked upon in recent and current literature, this project motivates, engages with, augments, and challenges existing philosophical approaches to mental health and depression. I begin by surveying the existing literature, and bringing the critiques of classical phenomenology suggested by Guenther’s …

Haa LéElk'w HáS Ji.Eetí, Our Grandparents' Art: A Study Of Master Tlingit Artists, 1750-1989, Zachary R. Jones

Anthropology

This dissertation examines the lives and creations of twenty-three master Tlingit artists that practiced in Southeast Alaska between 1750 and 1989. Biographical examination of master Tlingit artists showcases how artists created sacred art objects, known as at.óow, which play a central role in the social and spiritual life of the Tlingit people. Historic Tlingit artists came from the aanyádi, the aristocratic class, and were tasked with the responsibility of not only creating sacred art, but also serving as community leaders and exemplifying Tlingit values throughout their lives. The study of Tlingit artists and their creations also sheds light on objects …

Brackeen V. Zinke, Bradley E. Tinker Dec 2018

Brackeen V. Zinke, Bradley E. Tinker

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In 1978, Congress enacted the Indian Child Welfare Act to counter practices of removing Indian children from their homes, and to ensure the continued existence of Indian tribes through their children. The law created a framework establishing how Indian children are adopted as a way to protect those children and their relationship with their tribe. ICWA also established federal standards for Indian children being placed into non-Indian adoptive homes. Brackeen v. Zinke made an important distinction for the placement preferences of the Indian children adopted by non-Indian plaintiffs; rather than viewing the placement preferences in ICWA as based upon Indians’ …

Questions Presented: The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program enables nearly 700,000 undocumented individuals who were brought to the United States as children to live and work here without fear of deportation, so long as they play by the rules. In September 2017, the Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, on the advice of the Attorney General, abruptly decided to terminate the program.

Respondents brought suit to challenge that decision. The district court granted respondents' motion for a preliminary injunction and also denied the government's motion to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction. The court of appeals affirmed.

I See What You Meant To Say: Anticipating Speech Errors During Online Sentence Processing, Matthew W. Lowder, Fernanda Ferreira

Psychology Faculty Publications

Everyday speech is rife with errors and disfluencies, yet processing what we hear usually feels effortless. How does the language comprehension system accomplish such an impressive feat? The current experiment tests the hypothesis that listeners draw on relevant contextual and linguistic cues to anticipate speech errors and mentally correct them even before receiving an explicit correction from the speaker. In the current visual-world eye-tracking experiment, we monitored participants’ eye movements to objects in a display while they listened to utterances containing reparandum-repair speech errors (e.g., …his cat, uh I mean his dog…). The contextual plausibility of the misspoken …
