“Gratuitous Distribution”: Distributing African American Antislavery Texts, 1773–1850, Nathan Jeremie-Brink Jan 2018

“Gratuitous Distribution”: Distributing African American Antislavery Texts, 1773–1850, Nathan Jeremie-Brink

Dissertations

“‘Gratuitous Distribution’: Distributing African American Antislavery Texts, 1773–1850” examines the networks and practices African Americans used to move antislavery print in the early nineteenth century. Exchanges made use of subscription agents, business affiliates, churches, civic institutions and family or personal connections. Texts moved by formal and informal means, were smuggled and mailed, and some recipients read them aloud to people lacking or prohibited from literacy. At times, these practices transgressed laws or resulted in white authorities’ attempts to suppress the circulation of antislavery materials and the roles played by black distributors. Collaborative efforts facilitated the flow of printed texts and …

Biophysical Studies Of Guanine Nucleotide-Binding Alpha Subunits, Brian Leverson Jan 2018

Biophysical Studies Of Guanine Nucleotide-Binding Alpha Subunits, Brian Leverson

Dissertations

Guanine nucleotide-binding (G?) proteins have been intensely studied over the years due to their role as signal transduction proteins. Proper function depends on three flexible switch regions that are involved in the relatively slow hydrolysis of GTP, allowing for the proteins to act as a molecular on/off switch. The structure of a protein is essential to its biological function. Occurrences of mutations in the genes GNAS and GNAI1 to highly conserved arginine residue in the switch II region have been detected in several types of cancers.

Utilizing the combinations of temperature denaturation, kinetics assays, and molecular dynamics, we plan to …

Confidentiality In Patent Dispute Resolution: Antitrust Implications, Mark R. Patterson Jan 2018

Confidentiality In Patent Dispute Resolution: Antitrust Implications, Mark R. Patterson

Faculty Scholarship

nformation is crucial to the functioning of the patent system, as it is for other markets. Nevertheless, patent licensing terms are often subject to confidentiality agreements. On the one hand, this is not surprising: sellers and buyers do not normally publicize the details of their transactions. On the other hand, explicit confidentiality agreements are not common in other markets, and they may be particularly problematic for patents.

Several United States Supreme Court cases have condemned agreements that suppress market information, and those cases could be applied to confidentiality agreements in the patent context. Of course, confidentiality may sometimes be pro-competitive, …

Studying The Antagonistic Relationship Between Nkg2d And Tgf-Β Signaling In Cd8+ T Cells, Kushal Prajapati

Dissertations

Despite the remarkable success of cancer immunotherapies in treating patients with hematological cancers, the clinical response rates of immunotherapies in the case of solid tumors have been dismal. One major reason for the lower response rates is tumor-induced immune-suppression mediated by TGF-?, which directly suppresses the functionality of CD8+ T cells by inhibiting their activation, proliferation, and acquisition of inflammatory cytokines, granzyme B and perforin. On the other hand, NKG2D, a potent co-stimulatory receptor, has effects on CD8+ T cells opposite to that of TGF-?. In T cells from 22 healthy human donors, we found that the suppression by TGF-? …

Horses In Therapy: The Practice Of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Mandi J. Turner Jan 2018

Horses In Therapy: The Practice Of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Mandi J. Turner

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Horses are being used in psychotherapy at increasing rates despite a lack of evidence establishing efficacy of the practice (Anestis, Anestis, Zawilinski, Hopkins, & Lilienfeld, 2013; Selby & Smith-Osborne, 2013). Without common and consistent practices based on a working theory of how Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) creates change, it is unknown how varied the practice is across the United States (Anestis et al., 2013). A lack of studies establishing efficacy leaves providers to determine effectiveness based on anecdotal evidence that may be at risk for bias (Lilienfeld, Ritschel, Lynn, Cautin, & Latzman, 2014). The American Psychological Association (APA) provides recommended …

Beware The Trademark Echo Chamber: Why Federal Courts Should Not Defer To Uspto Decisions, Deborah R. Gerhardt Jan 2018

Beware The Trademark Echo Chamber: Why Federal Courts Should Not Defer To Uspto Decisions, Deborah R. Gerhardt

Faculty Publications

This Article explains why federal courts should not defer to United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) trademark decisions. Under United States trademark law, actual use of a mark on specific goods or services is required to support federal trademark registration. The USPTO processes a tremendous volume of applications to register trademarks. In order to do so expeditiously, trademark examiners use heuristics drawn from past USPTO registration data. While markets continually change, each trademark registration is updated at five or ten-year renewal intervals. Accordingly, much of the data does not reflect current market use. A recent audit established that many …

Heteromerization Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors In Human Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells: Identification Of Hetero-Oligomeric Receptor Complexes Between Α1-Adrenergic Receptors, Arginine Vasopressin Recptor 1a, Chemokine (C-X-C Motif) Receptor Type 4, And Atypical Chemokine Receptor 3., Lauren J. Albee

Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) heteromerization is rapidly evolving field. Traditionally, GPCRs were thought to behave has independent entities or protomers. However, that line of reasoning has since been brought into question. Currently, it appears that many, if not all, GPCRs signal and function as heteromeric receptor complexes. The roles of GPCR heteromerization are vast and can include: maturation and trafficking; dynamic regulation; allostery and cooperativity; signal transduction; and receptor internalization.

The majority of studies identifying and characterizing GPCR heteromers were performed using recombinant receptors. Only four receptor pairs have been identified and validated in native tissues. The overall objective of …

"We Were Framed To Fail And Die": The Ethics And Poetics Of Mortality In The Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Brett C. Beasley Jan 2018

"We Were Framed To Fail And Die": The Ethics And Poetics Of Mortality In The Works Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Brett C. Beasley

Dissertations

This dissertation is the first comprehensive analysis of the subject of mortality in Gerard Manley Hopkins's writings. Hopkins's writings on this subject are broad and varied: while still a student at Oxford, Hopkins became fascinated by martyrs; later, as a priest he would go on to write movingly about the deaths of parishioners in his care and would extol the virtues of soldiers, or "daredeaths" as he refers to them in one poem; finally, toward the end of his life, Hopkins became preoccupied with the role our own mortality plays in shaping our life, perspective, and choices. While previous scholars …

Home/School Collaboration And The Development Of A Growth Mindset Within Gifted Students, Lauren A. Carlson Jan 2018

Home/School Collaboration And The Development Of A Growth Mindset Within Gifted Students, Lauren A. Carlson

Dissertations

Studies show that curricula related to mindset can have a positive effect on increasing growth mindset in students. Literature also suggests that messages students receive from parents about their skills and hard work can have implications for mindset development. In this project, the researcher explored the knowledge, exposure, and involvement of parents of gifted students in a small suburban K-8 school district with regard to growth mindset instruction. The researcher also explored how teachers can increase home school collaboration in regards to growth mindset concepts. The researcher used a survey questionnaire and a semi-structured interview through a focus group format …

Immigration As Commerce: A New Look At The Federal Immigration Power And The Constitution, Jennifer Gordon Jan 2018

Immigration As Commerce: A New Look At The Federal Immigration Power And The Constitution, Jennifer Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The relationship of immigration law to the Constitution has long been incoherent. One result is that there is little clarity on the appropriate standard of review for constitutional violations when aspects of immigration law and policy are challenged in the federal courts. This Article advances the Commerce Clause as the anchor of a new understanding of the link between the government's immigration power and the Constitution. Despite the extensive early history of the Foreign Commerce Clause as the presumed source of the immigration power, it plays almost no role in immigration jurisprudence today, and few scholars have seriously considered its …

Psychological And Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Citizens Receiving Governmental Assistance, Vorricia Fechon Harvey Jan 2018

Psychological And Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Citizens Receiving Governmental Assistance, Vorricia Fechon Harvey

Dissertations

This dissertation study examines dynamics of psychological self-sufficiency (PSS) using a frame of reference that comes from perspectives of low-income citizens who receive some form of governmental assistance (i.e., public aid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and/or housing subsidies). It explores the validity of integrating PSS as a psychological capital into the holistic theory of change in workforce development. Because in the past, great emphasis has been placed on human capital development and fast track movement into the labor market, little has emerged on the influence of psychological capital properties. Subsequently, policy has guided the evolution of employment program …

Competitive Philanthropy: Charitable Naming Rights, Inequality And Social Norms, Linda Sugin Jan 2018

Competitive Philanthropy: Charitable Naming Rights, Inequality And Social Norms, Linda Sugin

Faculty Scholarship

Income inequality today is at a high not seen since the 1920s, and one way the very richest display their wealth is through charitable giving. Gifts in excess of $100 million are no longer rare, and in return for their mega-gifts, the biggest donors get their names on buildings, an astonishingly valuable benefit that the tax law ignores. The law makes no distinction between a gift of $100 and a gift of $100 million. This article argues that the tax law of charity should focus on the very rich and harness the culture of philanthropy among the elite. The law …

The first phase of data collection utilized a survey, and the second phase was comprised of semi-structured interviews.

Principals indicated they were motivated to become educators because of their desire to have a positive …

The Social Meaning Of The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act, Linda Sugin Jan 2018

The Social Meaning Of The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act, Linda Sugin

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay exposes the moral messages implicit in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). It argues that the legislation reflects values that were not openly debated or discussed in the legislative process, but are crucial to the distributional effects of the law. The TCJA reduces progressivity and increases deficits because it favors traditional families, prefers capital to labor income, treats people as detached from each other, makes charity the narrow concern of the rich, and privileges the acquisition of assets. Fairness in taxation depends on explicitly identifying social values that produce economic justice and purposely designing the law to …

The Political Morality Of Convergence In Contract, Aditi Bagchi Jan 2018

The Political Morality Of Convergence In Contract, Aditi Bagchi

Faculty Scholarship

One of the most interesting recent developments in contract law has been an academic and political effort to integrate private law. The proposed Common European Sales Law was ultimately withdrawn, and a series of setbacks, including the British referendum to exit the EU, has recast the politics of convergence. But it remains an objective for many European scholars. This essay considers the wisdom of convergence on a single law of transactions from the perspective of philosophical contract theory. The essay proceeds by disaggregating the rights at stake in contract law. It characterises the formal right to contract and describes its …

A Clothesline Theology For The World: How A Value-Driven Grand Narrative Of Scripture Can Frame The Gospel, Tom Steffen Jan 2018

A Clothesline Theology For The World: How A Value-Driven Grand Narrative Of Scripture Can Frame The Gospel, Tom Steffen

Great Commission Research Journal

This article attempts to answer the question, why is it important to view Scripture as a single grand narrative? Too many of us are specialist in fragmentation when it comes to Scripture. We therefore continue to perpetuate a fragmented understanding of Scripture, and her Author. To grasp a more comprehensive picture of the face of God we must be able to move beyond the individual pieces of clothing placed on the clothesline, whether linear or circular, and learn to value how they all tie together to form a comprehensive wardrobe that brings honor to the Wearer.
