Prior to novel targeted agents for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the best chemoimmunotherapy regimen in patients with non-del(11q) disease was unclear. The role of lenalidomide was also not defined. This phase 2 study randomized 342 untreated patients with non-del(11q) CLL requiring therapy to fludarabine plus rituximab (FR; n = 123), FR plus lenalidomide consolidation (FR+L; n = 109), or FR plus cyclophosphamide (FCR; n = 110) and compared 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates of each to the historical control rate with FC (60%). Patients with del(11q) in at least 20% of pretreatment cells continued with FCR (n = 27) or …

Devices and methods for use in removing non-specific binding in a bioassay are disclosed. A substrate can be used with input and output transducers to output surface acoustic waves. The surface acoustic waves can be transmitted through a medium. One of the input and output transducers can be formed on the surface of the substrate aligned with an x-axis of the substrate. These input and output transducers can excite a Rayleigh surface acoustic wave through the medium. Another one of the input and output transducers can be formed orthogonal to the x-axis. These input and output transducers can excite a …

Natsurfact: Progress In Commercializing Rhamnolipids, Daniel Derr
Natsurfact: Progress In Commercializing Rhamnolipids, Daniel Derr
Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]
NatSurFact is a rhamnolipid-based biosurfactant ingredient for the cosmetics industry developed by Logos Technologies. Rhamnolipids are a member of the glycolipid class of biosurfactants. They are made up of a rhamnose sugar head group and medium chain length 3-hydroxy fatty acid tails. Their structure was first elucidated in 1949 and they have been studied for myriad applications both academically and commercially since. While their properties as an anionic surfactant in the salt form are attractive – natural, mild, high foaming, high cleansing – they are not sold yet in appreciable commercial quantities. To bring rhamnolipids to market, Logos has focused …

Purpose: Molecular characterization of prostate cancer, including The Cancer Genome Atlas, has revealed distinct subtypes with underlying genomic alterations. One of these core subtypes, SPOP (speckle-type POZ protein) mutant prostate cancer, has previously only been identifiable via DNA sequencing, which has made the impact on prognosis and routinely used risk stratification parameters unclear.
Methods: We have developed a novel gene expression signature, classifier (Subclass Predictor Based on Transcriptional Data), and decision tree to predict the SPOP mutant subclass from RNA gene expression data and classify common prostate cancer molecular subtypes. We then validated and further interrogated the association of prostate …

Structural, Nanomechanical, And Nanotribological Characterization Of Human Hair And Conditioner Using Atomic Force Microscopy And Nanoindentation, Bharat Bhushan
Advances in Cosmetic Formulation Design [2018]
Human hair is a nanocomposite biological fiber. Maintaining the health, feel, shine, color, softness, and overall aesthetics of the hair is highly desired. Hair care products such as shampoos and conditioners, along with damaging processes such as chemical dyeing and permanent wave treatments, affect the maintenance and grooming process and are important to study because they alter many hair properties. Nanoscale characterization of the cellular structure, mechanical properties, and morphological, frictional, and adhesive properties (tribological properties) of hair are essential to evaluate and develop better cosmetic products, and to advance the understanding of biological and cosmetic science. The tensile response …

Cross-fostering offspring with nonbiological parents could prove useful to augment populations of endangered carnivores. We used cross-fostering to augment captive-born and wild-born litters for the endangered red wolf (Canis rufus). Between 1987 and 2016, 23 cross-fostering events occurred involving captive-born pups fostered into captive litters (n = 8 events) and captive-born pups fostered into wild recipient litters (n = 15 events). Percentage of pups surviving 3 and 12 months was 91.7% for captive-born pups fostered into captive recipient litters. For pups fostered into wild litters, percentage of pups surviving 5 months was > 94% among fostered pups …

Her2 Basolateral Versus Circumferential Ihc Expression Is Dependent On Polarity And Differentiation Of Epithelial Cells In Gastric/Ge Adenocarcinoma, Shahid Pervez, Sidra Arshad, Brooj Abro
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Aim: Antigenic expression in epithelial cells can be heterogeneous which may pose a problem in immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of tumor markers, in particular, predictive markers like HER2. Studies have shown that epithelial cells have distinct apical and basolateral domains which are separated by tight junctions. The cell membrane in these two domains has a different composition of macromolecules and hence can have variable antigen expression on immunohistochemistry. In our study, we aimed to investigate this phenomenon of basolateral versus circumferential IHC staining of HER2 in gastric/GE adenocarcinoma.
Methods: We selected 45 cases of gastric/GE adenocarcinoma and evaluated equal number of …
Volatile Flavor Compounds Vary By Beef Product Type And Degree Of Doneness, Kourtney Gardner, Jerrad F. Legako
Volatile Flavor Compounds Vary By Beef Product Type And Degree Of Doneness, Kourtney Gardner, Jerrad F. Legako
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
This study aimed to determine how quality grade and degree of doneness (DOD) influence the development of volatile compounds among beef whole muscle and ground patties. Volatile compounds were quantified via head space solid phase microextraction from samples tempered in refrigerated temperatures (3 to 5 °C), room temperature (24 to 26 °C), or cooked on an electric clamshell-style grill to an endpoint temperature of 55, 60, 71, or 77 °C. Collected samples were subsequently determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Prominent compounds known to be the result of the Maillard reaction or lipid degradation were retained for comparison. Four Strecker …

Successional Processes In The Benthic Invertebrate Communities At Gray’S Reef National Marine Sanctuary, Alexis A. Bivens
Successional Processes In The Benthic Invertebrate Communities At Gray’S Reef National Marine Sanctuary, Alexis A. Bivens
Honors College Theses
While the process of community development has been studied in terrestrial habitats since the turn of the 20th century, similar information is not as readily available in marine systems. Understanding patterns of community development is essential to predicting recovery potential and to designing effective marine protected areas. In the South Atlantic Bight, invertebrate communities on hard substrata can differ significantly from one rocky outcrop to another, but the factors driving these differences are not well understood. I documented the initial development of the benthic invertebrate community at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) to address the prediction that this system …

The (Re)Newed Barrier To Access To Medication: Data Exclusivity, Srividhya Ragavan
Akron Law Review
This Article is set in the background of the consequences of the WTO’s prescriptions on patenting of life-saving medications which has largely contributed to the morphing of patents o n life-saving medication into a luxury. Remarkably, there has been a transformation of the role of patents in the context of pharmaceutical innovation into a strategic business tool leading to a larger interest in creation and sustenance of regulatory rights. The biggest global development in this area is an increased effort to strengthen exclusivity using regulatory protections for all chemicals, and even, biologics, involved in all stages of drug development. Consequently, …

We develop the continuous time version of the particle model studied in [13]. The evolution is described by a pure jump, continuous time Markov process on the space of words of length L with a size N alphabet. Words change randomly in search of a preferred state, here the vector zero. In genome population models, this is the genome presenting selection advantage [21]; in cancer development, it is a state of a damaged gene by deleterious mutations, and in epidemiological models the number of infected individuals in the population. In the last two models, the characters in the preferred word …

Co-Dependency Between A Specialist Andrena Bee And Its Death Camas Host, Toxicoscordion Paniculatum, James H. Cane
All PIRU Publications
Among associations of plants and their pollinating bees, mutually specialized pairings are rare. Typically, either pollen specialist (oligolectic) bees are joined by polylectic bees in a flowering species’ pollinator guild, or specialized flowers are pollinated by one or more polylectic bees. The bee Andrena astragali is a narrow oligolege, collecting pollen solely from two nearly identical species of death camas (Toxicoscordion, formerly Zigadenus). Neurotoxic alkaloids of these plants are implicated in sheep and honey bee poisoning. In this study, T. paniculatum, T. venenosum and co-flowering forbs were sampled for bees at 15 sites along a 900-km-long east–west …
