Water Treatment Residual Coated Wood Mulch For Mitigation Of Toxic Metals And Phosphate From Polluted Urban Stormwater Runoff, Hanieh Soleimanifar
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Polluted urban runoff as a primary non-point pollution source poses a serious threat to urban human and ecological health. Various urban runoff pollutants challenge the exiting stormwater treatment systems. To support the development of a sound and sustainable urban stormwater management, this dissertation targets at transforming a common landscaping practice, i.e. mulching, into a new stormwater treatment technology through coating aluminum water treatment residual (Al-WTR) on the surface of wood mulch chips. WTR is an industrial waste produced from drinking water treatment plants and primarily comprises amorphous aluminum (hydr)oxides. The Al-WTR coating on the modified wood mulch enables the adsorption …

Guidelines For Feature Matching Assessment Of Brain–Computer Interfaces For Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Kevin M. Pitt, Jonathan S. Brumberg
Guidelines For Feature Matching Assessment Of Brain–Computer Interfaces For Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Kevin M. Pitt, Jonathan S. Brumberg
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose--Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) can provide access to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices using neurological activity alone without voluntary movements. As with traditional AAC access methods, BCI performance may be influenced by the cognitive–sensory–motor and motor imagery profiles of those who use these devices. Therefore, we propose a person-centered, feature matching framework consistent with clinical AAC best practices to ensure selection of the most appropriate BCI technology to meet individuals' communication needs.
Method--The proposed feature matching procedure is based on the current state of the art in BCI technology and published reports on cognitive, sensory, motor, and motor …

Quantifying The Effect Of Dietary Restriction On Lifespans In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kathryn Rouse
Quantifying The Effect Of Dietary Restriction On Lifespans In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kathryn Rouse
Honors Theses
Dietary restriction (DR) increases lifespan in many organisms. The effect of DR is best studied in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae; however, previous studies of the DR effect on yeast lifespan tend to be qualitative. Here, we quantitatively study the effect of DR on lifespan for a selection of gene deletions in a 168-strain set of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Lifespans of these yeast mutants were measured in YPD with 2% glucose and 0.05% glucose conditions. To quantify the aging process and its influence by DR, we fit yeast lifespan data with a three-parameter network aging model that is informative of the …

Use Of Fluorescein Dye For Characterizing Water And Solute Flux Across The Groundwater – Surface Water Interface, Ryan Nicholas Cascarano
Use Of Fluorescein Dye For Characterizing Water And Solute Flux Across The Groundwater – Surface Water Interface, Ryan Nicholas Cascarano
Masters Theses
Quantifying groundwater discharge across the sediment—surface water interface remains a challenge due to streambed heterogeneity and the integration of disparate measurements over a continuum of spatial and temporal scales. In this study, mini-piezometers are first used to identify areas of groundwater discharge in lakes and streams, and micro-pulses of fluorescein dye are released at precisely known shallow depths as a conservative tracer. The use of fluorescein dye allows for visual dye detection regardless of light conditions, and measurements of dye concentrations over time using a fluorometer are used to generate high resolution breakthrough curves. Accurate determination of groundwater velocity and …

Mechanical Characterization Of The Mesh-Tissue Composite Using Abdominal Wall Tissue Phantoms And Experimental Simulations, Mathew Murphy Stanford
Mechanical Characterization Of The Mesh-Tissue Composite Using Abdominal Wall Tissue Phantoms And Experimental Simulations, Mathew Murphy Stanford
All Theses
Abdominal wall hernias occur when a weakening in the muscle layer allows the protrusion of internal tissues. Hernia repair is a highly common surgical procedure with nearly one-million performed annually during which surgeons may implant surgical mesh to reinforce the weakened muscles and probe by hand to subjectively assess mesh fixation to the abdominal wall. Objective evaluation of mesh implantation relies on the mechanical characterization of the mesh-tissue composite, which is difficult in intra- operative settings. There is a need for tools capable of providing quantitative assessments of the mechanical behavior of mesh in situ. While several metrics exist for …

Macromolecule Loading On Plga Particles Through Surface Adsorption, Yiwei Wang
Macromolecule Loading On Plga Particles Through Surface Adsorption, Yiwei Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advent of biotherapeutics have impacted the ways in which diseases are treated. In many instances development of recombinant proteins and oligonucleotides into therapeutics are slowed by poor stability of the candidate drugs. Progress has been made in using polymeric particles as carriers of macromolecule drugs. Historically the method is to encapsulate biological drugs into spherical polymeric matrices. Owing to its biocompatible and biodegradable nature, poly (d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been used extensively in formulating biological drugs into nano- and micro-sized particles. The development of PLGA biologic formulations, however, has been hampered by matrix acidification; the hydrolysis of the polymer …

Separation, Detection, And Quantitation Of Underivatized Carbohydrates Using Liquid Chromatography- Electrospray Ionization-Triple Quadrupole- Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Jonathan B. Thacker
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Carbohydrate analysis has many important implications in health, consumer products, and industrial processes. Among many possible analytical techniques for their analysis, mass spectrometry (MS) is an attractive approach, offering high sensitivity and specificity. In particular, electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS affords several advantages over other ionization techniques: the ability for direct coupling with upstream chemical separation techniques, its suitability for quantitation, and its compatibility with relatively inexpensive quadrupole mass analyzers for the analysis of high molecular weight compounds. However, the sensitivity of ESI-MS towards carbohydrates tends to be much less than for other classes of compounds, such as peptides. This is due …
Characterization And Remediation Of Wastewater From Unconventional Oil And Gas Development, Tiffany Michelle Liden
Characterization And Remediation Of Wastewater From Unconventional Oil And Gas Development, Tiffany Michelle Liden
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Increasing energy demands from the nation and technological advancement in well development have led to the rapid expansion of unconventional oil and gas extraction. Current disposal methods for wastewater generated from the development of low porosity formations are not environmentally sustainable. The billions of gallons of highly variable, chemically-rich wastewater, referred to as produced water, is frequently sequestered in subsurface, non-productive stratum through injection wells. Cost-effective options to treat produced water are being sought as an alternative to injection wells to prevent the loss of water from the water cycle and decrease anthropologically induced seismic events. Ultimately, it has been …
