Mechanically Assisted Electrochemical Degradation Of Alumina-Tic Composites, Hetal Umesh Maharaja, Guigen Zhang

Publications

Alumina-TiC composite material is a tough ceramic composite with excellent hardness, wear resistance and oxidation resistance in dry and high-temperature conditions. In aqueous conditions, however, it is likely to be electrochemically active facilitating charge transfer processes due to the conductive nature of TiC. For application as an orthopedic biomaterial, it is crucial to assess the electrochemical behavior of this composite, especially under a combined mechanical and electrochemical environment. In this study, we examined the mechanically assisted electrochemical performance of alumina-TiC composite in an aqueous environment. The spontaneous electrochemical response to brushing abrasion was measured. Changes in the magnitude of electrochemical …

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Wanli Xing, Fei Gao Aug 2018

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Wanli Xing, Fei Gao

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Educators show great interest in participating in social-media communities, such as Twitter, to support their professional development and learning. The majority of the research into Twitter-based professional learning communities has investigated why educators choose to use Twitter for professional development and learning and what they actually do in these communities. However, few studies have examined why certain community members remain committed and others gradually drop out. To fill this gap in the research, this study investigated how some key features of online discourse influenced the continued participation of the members of a Twitter-based professional learning community. More than 600,000 tweets …

Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Family Functioning And Child Grit On The Relation Between Adhd Endophenotypes And Adhd Symptoms, Karin Fisher Aug 2018

Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Family Functioning And Child Grit On The Relation Between Adhd Endophenotypes And Adhd Symptoms, Karin Fisher

Dissertations

ADHD is a heritable condition, with unknown etiologies and different phenotypic expressions in affected individuals. Its genetic vulnerability may be expressed only when specific environmental conditions are present. Endophenotypes stand in the causal path between genes and disease and are found in children diagnosed with ADHD as well as unaffected relatives. This study investigated the link between ADHD endophenotypes and the heterogeneous expression of ADHD symptoms in 84 children aged 11 to 17 years and explored whether this relation depends on family functioning and resilience of the child (i.e., grit). It was hypothesized that (1) ADHD endophenotypes would be moderately …

Alternative Reading Frames In Protein-Coding Dna, A Functional And Regulatory Mystery, Travis Wheeler Aug 2018

Alternative Reading Frames In Protein-Coding Dna, A Functional And Regulatory Mystery, Travis Wheeler

University Grant Program Reports

Objective: We have found that ~13% of all human genes include at least one exon that can (and apparently does) encode alternate peptides in more than one reading frame. These surprisingly prevalent dual-coding exons are nearly all conserved in the mouse genome, strongly suggesting that they play an important biological role. The objective of this seed grant was to lay the groundwork for a grant proposal to characterize these dual-coding exons, understand when and where they are functional, and learn what sort of sequence and structural traits correlate with their presence.

Microplastic Ingestion By Daphnia Magna And Its Enhancement On Algal Growth, Patrick M. Canniff, Tham C. Hoang

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The rapid increase in plastic use over the last few decades has resulted in plastic pollution in freshwater and marine ecosystems. However, more attention has been paid to plastic pollution in marine ecosystems than to freshwater ecosystems. This research determined microplastic ingestion by Daphnia magna and the potential effect of microplastics on the organism's survival and reproduction. The study also examined the potential of microplastics to enhance algal growth in support of understanding effects of microplastic ingestion on the organism. When exposed to 25, 50, and 100 mg/L fluorescent green polyethylene microbeads at size of 63–75 μm, D. …

Efficacy Of Listeria Phage In Reducing Listeria Monocytogenes Under Both Experimental And Food Processing Conditions, Jia Liu Aug 2018

Efficacy Of Listeria Phage In Reducing Listeria Monocytogenes Under Both Experimental And Food Processing Conditions, Jia Liu

Open Access Theses

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a foodborne pathogen able to flourish in different food processing environments. Bacteriophages are viruses that target bacteria and may be effective in controlling bacterial contamination in different environments. In 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a six-Listeria phage product for use as a food additive in controlling Listeria contamination in ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of bacteriophages in controlling Listeria monocytogenes growth on non-food contact surfaces under different conditions.

Stainless steel coupons or sterilized bags were inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes (LM94 or LM-GFP) and a cocktail …

Chromatin Remodeling In Early Embryogenesis, Bethany Weldon Aug 2018

Chromatin Remodeling In Early Embryogenesis, Bethany Weldon

Open Access Theses

Epigenetic marks are globally remodeled during mammalian embryo development. Chromatin remodeling mediated by the SWI/SNF (Switch/Sucrose non-fermentable) complexes can participate in epigenetic remodeling during cleavage development. SWI/SNF complexes are multi-subunit complexes that contain a core catalytic subunit (SMARCA4 or SMARCA2) and a collection of additional subunits that guide the complexes to their appropriate loci. It has been reported that discrete SWI/SNF subunits adopt different intracellular localization patterns as porcine embryos proceed through cleavage development. In the work presented here, we investigated how these SWI/SNF subunits are trafficked during embryo development. We hypothesized that the localization patterns of the SWI/SNF chromatin …

Positive evaluations of one’s body, or positive body image, is associated with healthy outcomes. Conversely, negative evaluations of one’s body, or negative body image, is a significant risk factor for unhealthy outcomes including eating disorders. Yet, these constructs have not been explored conjointly or in individuals with self-reported levels of positive and negative body image. The goal of the current study was to examine associations among positive, negative, and average levels of body image and a set of participant characteristics including body mass index (BMI), fitness levels, psychological well-being, and attitudes/behaviors toward social media in emerging adults (N = 439). …

A Methodological Review Of The Cross-Cultural Ethical Dilemmas That Exist Within The Informed Consent Process: When Ethical Considerations In Human Research Differ, Suzanne Victoria Landram Aug 2018

A Methodological Review Of The Cross-Cultural Ethical Dilemmas That Exist Within The Informed Consent Process: When Ethical Considerations In Human Research Differ, Suzanne Victoria Landram

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to (a) explore researchers’ and participants’ experiences with the consent process in cross-cultural human research, and to (b) offer culturally responsive methods of how cross-cultural consent could be negotiated. Despite the lack of empirical studies, there has been much theoretical debate concerning the appropriateness of the Western approach to informed consent in developing countries (Dawson & Kass, 2005). Therefore, a qualitative approach to exploring past cross-cultural studies’ researchers’ and participants’ views was needed to gain an in-depth and clearer understanding of these ethical issues, as well as what appropriate measures need to be taken …

© 2018 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Pectobacterium atrosepticum is a phytopathogen of economic importance as it is the causative agent of potato blackleg and soft rot. Here we describe the Pectobacterium phage vB_PatP_CB5 (abbreviated as CB5), which specifically infects the bacterium. The bacteriophage is characterized in detail and TEM micrographs indicate that it belongs to the Podoviridae family. CB5 shares significant pairwise nucleotide identity (≥80%) with P. atrosepticum phages 'M1, Peat1, and PP90 and also shares common genome organization. Phylograms constructed using conserved proteins and whole-genome comparison-based amino acid sequences show that these phages form a distinct …

Response Of The Downstream Braided Channel To Zhikong Reservoir On Lhasa River, Peng Gao, Xinyu Wu, Zhiwei Li, Cao Huang, Tiesong Hu

Geography and the Environment - All Scholarship

Lhasa River basin is situated in the southern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is the most important region of economic and social development in Tibet. In order to efficiently utilize water resources in the basin and ease the shortage of regional electric power supply, Zhikong Reservoir was built in the upstream reach of the Lhasa River in 2006. Impoundment of this reservoir evidently affected the morphology and stability of the downstream braided channel below the dam. Yet, little is known about the complex responses of the downstream braided channel to the Zhikong Dam. Landsat images in the 2000–2016 period, …

Antipredatory Escape Behaviors Of Two Benthic Ctenophores In South Florida, Peter W. Glynn, Brian Coffman, Jeongran Vanderwoude, Nicolas Martinez, Joshua H. Dominguez, Julie M. Gross, Dorothy-Ellen A. Renegar

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Benthic ctenophores, members of the family Coeloplanidae (Order Platyctenida, Phylum Ctenophora) are more widespread and abundant in tropical and subtropical marine environments than formerly recognized. Coeloplanid ctenophores are members of the most speciose family of benthic ctenophores, with 33 recognized species of Coeloplana and one species of the genus Vallicula (Mills 1998). The majority of coeloplanids are ectosymbionts of algae and diverse benthic invertebrates (Matsumoto 1999, Alamaru et al. 2015). Hundreds to thousands of individuals can occupy preferred habitats in < 1 m2 of substrate patches. Galt (1998) noted Vallicula multiformis inhabiting algae in Hawaii at population densities as high as 10,000 …

Memory T cells are critical for the immune response to recurring infections. Their instantaneous reactivity to pathogens is empowered by the persistent expression of cytokine-encoding mRNAs. How the translation of proteins from pre-formed cytokine-encoding mRNAs is prevented in the absence of infection has remained unclear. Here we found that protein production in memory T cells was blocked via a 3′ untranslated region (3′ UTR)-mediated process. Germline deletion of AU-rich elements (AREs) in the Ifng-3′ UTR led to chronic cytokine production in memory T cells. This aberrant protein production did not result from increased expression and/or half-life of the mRNA. Instead, …

Growth Of Pelagic Age-0 Yellow Perch In Relation To Hatch Dates And Water Temperature In North-Central Minnesota Lakes, Ethan Karppinen Aug 2018

Growth Of Pelagic Age-0 Yellow Perch In Relation To Hatch Dates And Water Temperature In North-Central Minnesota Lakes, Ethan Karppinen

Biology Graduate Theses

Exposure to consistent water warming rates and access to abundant populations of edible sized zooplankton affects growth and increases the probability of survival for newly hatched Yellow Perch Perca flavescens. Seven lakes with varying physical characteristics were selected in north-central Minnesota to study abiotic (water temperature) and biotic (zooplankton community and fish growth) progressions during the spring and early summer (April-June). Mean water temperatures from ice-out to 28 June (11.98-14.62 °C) had significant relationships with mean depth (P < 0.01, R? = 0.85), max depth (P < 0.01, R? = 0.73), and total volume (P < 0.01, R2 = 0.54). Hatch periods ranged from 13 to 19 days in 2015 and 13 to 25 days in 2016. Cumulative degree-days (CDD) were used to predict Yellow Perch hatch periods and explain growth. CDD predicted 21-81% of hatch periods in 2015 and 11-50% in 2016. Mean predicted total lengths at 28 June were 19.65-30.41 mm in 2015 and 20.88-28.54 mm in 2016. There was a significant relationship between CDD and predicted total length (R? = 0.62, P < 0.01) to explain differences in Yellow Perch total length while inhabiting the pelagic zone. Observed gape measurements were highly correlated with predicted gapes from the Schael formula (R? = 0.89, P < 0.01) that was used to assess the availability of edible sized zooplankton for age-0 Yellow Perch in each lake. No predator-prey mismatches were found and earlier hatch dates produced age-0 Yellow Perch with greater predicted total lengths in late June on the majority of lakes. This suggests that earlier hatched Yellow perch have an advantage over later hatched Yellow Perch in attaining greater lengths by late June. Our study provides information on a variety of physical and biological progressions in lakes, which may be used for fisheries management practices in the future.

Teaching Elsewhere: Curating↔Calibrating Posthumanist Possibilities, Sarah Alice Shelton

English Dissertations - Archive

Following the material and ontological turns and working within the recent conversation applying posthumanist theory to education and educational research, this dissertation argues that professors can materialize immediate, critical differences for our students—open up different possibilities for their knowing-in-being than the ones imposed on us by a humanist education system—by “teaching elsewhere” even while staying within the college classroom spaces (designed to be “anywhere”) we’re assigned. Such a posthumanist praxis or pedagogy relies on Karen Barad’s agential realism to see “the classroom” as the entire spacetimemattering of a particular phenomenon brought together through a mixture of choices and impositions into …

Detection Of Molecular Biomarkers Involved In The Induction Of Emt, Migration And Invasion, And Drug Resistance In Breast Cancer Cells In 3d Confinement, Tamara Nicole Hill

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Standard-of-care regimes for cancer treatment have become more effective and sophisticated over the last decade due to research developments which facilitate specific targeting of treatments to certain cancers, and the ability to provide specialized care to cancer patients. However, cancer treatments overall still fall short of preventing spread of disease from the primary tumor to secondary sites where they settle and form new more aggressive tumors. It is this stage of disease progression which results in the majority of cancer deaths. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a system for the effective high throughput screening of chemotherapeutic …

Fabrication And In Vitro Characterization Of An Implant For The Detection Of Metastatic Cancer Cells, Carlos Martin Cantu Aug 2018

Fabrication And In Vitro Characterization Of An Implant For The Detection Of Metastatic Cancer Cells, Carlos Martin Cantu

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Greater than 90% of cancer related deaths are due to metastasis (Hayes & Wicha, 2011). Since current conventional techniques detect the disease by the time that it has become systemic, our lab has developed a hydrogel based cancer trap that can attract metastatic cancer cells via cytokine release. However, for continual monitoring and accessibility to the gel, an implant is needed for delivery, retention, and retrieval of the gel. The research undergone in this thesis seeks to develop such a method. Namely, the objective was to develop a polylactide (PLA) based implant that is capable of delivering and retaining a …

Stem Success For All: High School Teachers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Culturally Relevant Education In Science And Math Classes, Stephanie Boyce Aug 2018

Stem Success For All: High School Teachers’ Perceptions And Practice Of Culturally Relevant Education In Science And Math Classes, Stephanie Boyce

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The lack of participation of historically underrepresented groups (i.e., Hispanics, Blacks, and women) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a serious issue in the United States. Despite the intentional efforts at increasing STEM participation, Black and Hispanic high school students graduate significantly less prepared for college-level mathematics and science than their White counterparts. As a result, they are more likely to underachieve in college and inadvertently continue the cycle of STEM underrepresentation in college. Using an anti-deficit perspective, this study explored a single high school science and math department’s teachers’ perceptions about Culturally Relevant Education (CRE) practices as …
