Petrographic And Microfacies Analysis Of The Shublik Formation, Northern Alaska: Implications For An Unconventional Resource System, April Rae Knox
Petrographic And Microfacies Analysis Of The Shublik Formation, Northern Alaska: Implications For An Unconventional Resource System, April Rae Knox
Geosciences
The North Slope of Alaska includes a world-class conventional petroleum system that has been producing for approximately 40 years. While the regional stratigraphy includes multiple proven source and reservoir rocks, the Middle to Upper Triassic Shublik Formation (Fm.) is the most prolific. The decline in conventional hydrocarbon production on the North Slope and the presence of high quality source rocks inspire the evaluation of the Shublik Fm. as an unconventional petroleum system where oil or gas are produced directly from source rocks. The Shublik Fm. is a heterogeneous calcareous shale and limestone interval that has been interpreted to indicate deposition …
Mechanisms And Implications Of Changes In The Timing Of Ocean Freeze-Up, Rebecca J. Rolph
Mechanisms And Implications Of Changes In The Timing Of Ocean Freeze-Up, Rebecca J. Rolph
Geosciences
The shift to an Arctic seasonal sea ice cover in recent years motivates a deeper understanding of freeze-up processes and implications of a lengthened open water season. As the sea ice boundary between the Arctic ocean and atmosphere covers a smaller area, the effects of enhanced wind mixing become more pronounced. Winds are important for ocean circulation and heat exchange. Ultimately, they can influence when freeze-up can occur, or can break up new ice as it forms. The chapters of this thesis are motivated by the substantial social and geophysical consequences of a lengthening open water season and linked through …

Transgenic Salmon And The Definition Of "Species" Under The Endangered Species Act, Blake Hood
Transgenic Salmon And The Definition Of "Species" Under The Endangered Species Act, Blake Hood
Florida State University Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law
This note considers how transgenic Salmon should be classified under the current definition of species in the Endangered Species Act. The author first considers and explains the different historical definitions for species of animals, such as: Taxonomists views of species; the Essentialists views; Darwin's theory of evolution as it relates to the definition of species; Mayr's Biological Species Concept (BCS); and other more general considerations. Following this scientific analysis, the author looks to the Endangered Species Act, its regulations, and judicial definitions of species to examine how lawmakers have defined species. After establishing these differing views on species, the author …

Environmental Law In Cuba, Oliver A. Houck
Environmental Law In Cuba, Oliver A. Houck
Florida State University Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law
This groundbreaking article describes the evolution of Cuban environmental law. It begins by hazarding a summary of the machinery of government. It then moves to consider early environmental laws and policies, the emergence of a new environmental ministry in 1994, a new framework environmental law in 1997, subsequent programs for environmental impact assessment, coastal zone management, and biological diversity, and first steps towards their implementation. It ends with an assessment of special economic, political and legal challenges Cuba faces and their relationship to environmental policy. The questions are obvious. The answers are not, but their pursuit is very much in …
The Valuation Of Wetlands, Kathryn Gale Winter Cowdery, Karl Scheuerman, J. Christopher Lombardo
The Valuation Of Wetlands, Kathryn Gale Winter Cowdery, Karl Scheuerman, J. Christopher Lombardo
Florida State University Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law
This Article asserts that an understanding of wetland valuation requires consideration of many disciplines, including biology, chemistry, social sciences, economics, and state and federal law. The authors explain that wetland valuation is dependent upon the definition of "wetland" in the area under study and the surrounding situation, and conclude that if practitioners understand the major points of wetland appraisal, they will be able to present hearing officers and judges with relatively sophisticated, comprehensive, and accurate information upon which rulings can be based.

Cyclones Affect Vocalization And The Marine Soundscape Within A Blue Hole, Craig A. Raffenberg
Cyclones Affect Vocalization And The Marine Soundscape Within A Blue Hole, Craig A. Raffenberg
Open Access Theses
Tropical cyclones are a major disturbance on nearshore marine and reef communities, which are highly valuable for their biodiversity and for commercial and recreational purposes. The increasing study of soundscape ecology and the usefulness of sound in the marine environment has led to growing awareness of factors altering the marine soundscape and how changes in the soundscape impact fish behavior, usually negatively. Studies have noted the input of sound from cyclones alter the marine soundscape, though these studies are mainly limited to offshore and deep-water environments. Sound has rarely been used to quantify cyclone effects on coral reefs. Here we …

Polysaccharides have key biological functions and can be harnessed for therapeutic roles, such as the anticoagulant heparin. Their complexity—e.g., >100 monosaccharides with variety in linkage and branching structure—significantly complicates analysis compared to other biopolymers such as DNA and proteins. More, and improved, analysis tools have been called for, and here we demonstrate that solid-state silicon nitride nanopore sensors and tuned sensing conditions can be used to reliably detect native polysaccharides and enzymatic digestion products, differentiate between different polysaccharides in straightforward assays, provide new experimental insights into nanopore electrokinetics, and uncover polysaccharide properties. We show that nanopore sensing allows us to …
Higher-Order Accurate Finite Difference Method For Thermal Analysis In Double-Layered Solid Structures -- Gradient Preserved Method, Yun Yan
Doctoral Dissertations
Layered structures have appeared in many systems such as biological tissues, micro-electronic devices, thin films, fins, reactor walls, thermoelectric power conversion, thermal coating, metal oxide semiconductors, and thermal processing of DNA origami nanostructures. Analyzing heat transfer in layered structures is of crucial importance for the design and operation of devices and the optimization of thermal processing of materials. There are many numerical methods dealing with the layered structures or interface problems. The existing numerical methods such as the immersed interface method and the matched interface boundary method, if using threegrid points across the interface, usually provide only a second-order truncation …

Developing An Assay To Quantify Antigen-Specific Igy In A Long-Lived Seabird, Anna Louise Mccarter
Developing An Assay To Quantify Antigen-Specific Igy In A Long-Lived Seabird, Anna Louise Mccarter
Master's Theses
To maximize parental fitness, life history theory predicts that short-lived species will prioritize reproductive efforts over self-maintenance functions. The opposite is predicted for long-lived species, which ought to invest heavily in immune defenses, particularly those of the acquired immune system. Yet, most of our current understanding of immune system function has been from investigations of short-lived model species. Little is known about the induction and maintenance of immunological memory in wild species, and in particular, long-lived, wild species. This is due in part to limited availability of species-specific secondary antibodies for use in serological studies of non-model species. Moreover, commercially …

Utility Of International Normative 20 M Shuttle Run Values For Identifying Youth At Increased Cardiometabolic Risk, Duncan S. Buchan, Gareth Knox, Anwen M. Jones, Grant Tomkinson, Julien S. Baker
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of international normative centiles for the 20 m shuttle run test (20mSRT) to identify youth at increased cardiometabolic risk. This was a cross-sectional study involving 961 children aged 10–17 years (53% girls) from the United Kingdom. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves determined the discriminatory ability of cardiorespiratory fitness percentiles for predicting increased cardiometabolic risk. ROC analysis demonstrated a significant but poor discriminatory accuracy of cardiorespiratory fitness in identifying low/high cardiometabolic risk in girls (AUC = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.54–0.63; p = 0.04), and in boys (AUC = 0.59, 95% CI: …
Development Of A Longitudinal Imaging System For Murine Brain Injury Models, Chelsea D. Pernici
Development Of A Longitudinal Imaging System For Murine Brain Injury Models, Chelsea D. Pernici
Doctoral Dissertations
Following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke, secondary injury cascades can lead to axonal damage and persistent microglia activation, respectively, in subcortical regions of mice. Current techniques, such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and histology are used to observe features related to damage, but DTI lacks cellular resolution and histology is conducted on fixed tissue, preventing longitudinal studies in the same mouse. The combination of cranial windows and multiphoton microscopy (MPM) is used to image cells in the upper layers of the mouse cortex, but resolution rapidly degrades with imaging depth, making it difficult to observe white matter and subcortical …
Development And Analysis Of Engineered Brain Cell Microenvironments Mimicking Healthy And Diseased Neuronal Circuits, Kahla St. Marthe
Development And Analysis Of Engineered Brain Cell Microenvironments Mimicking Healthy And Diseased Neuronal Circuits, Kahla St. Marthe
Doctoral Dissertations
Astrocytes and microglia (glial cells) are active elements of the brain maintaining numerous homeostatic functions. Disturbances result in worsening of neuro-inflammation, traumatic brain injury, and various stages of brain tumors. Glial cells contribute to homeostasis for dynamic second messengers in the CNS, including intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+] i). Calcium is a central secondary messenger which signals for example, through the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor on the neuronal membrane. A large, dynamic Ca2+ influx ensues after glutamate binds to the NMDA receptor. This influx initiates several molecular mechanisms within the cell. Disturbances in calcium homeostasis can lead to neurological diseases such …
Validation Of Spatial Hysteresis As The Internal Damping Mechanism In An Unmanned Micro Aerial Vehicle Model, Ashleigh Chambers
Validation Of Spatial Hysteresis As The Internal Damping Mechanism In An Unmanned Micro Aerial Vehicle Model, Ashleigh Chambers
Doctoral Dissertations
Unmanned aerial vehicles have been an area of interest in both research and industry for the past several decades. Advancements in technology have allowed such aircraft to decrease in size. UAVs are less expensive than traditional aircraft and are less restricted in where they can fly due to their compact size, leading to shifts in the way infrastructure, agriculture, and transportation surveillance and operations are handled.
However, small aerial vehicles and flexible, composite ones are more susceptible to crashes. This has led to an increased interest in methods to control such aircraft. In order to accurately model for a composite, …
The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance
The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance
Doctoral Dissertations
An individual’s social world is understood through categorizing other people as those within an individual’s own in-group and those without, or the out-group. Social cognitive theory suggests that individuals make decisions in social settings based on implicit social comparisons between these groups. Stereotypes are oversimplified beliefs about the members of a specific group and discrimination is the behavioral outcome based on held stereotypes. Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, age, and gender has dominated research in the realm of employee selection for the last twenty years. Researchers have demonstrated perceived and actual differences in various attributes by region of the United …
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wennan Ma
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Wennan Ma
Doctoral Dissertations
Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a simple and effective numerical method that can be used to solve a variety of challenging problems in computational mechanics. It is a Lagrangian mesh-free method ideal for solving deformation problems. In the SPH method, the state of a system is represented by a set of particles, which possesses individual material properties and interact with each other within a specific range defined as a support domain by a weight function or smoothing function. SPH features flexibility in handling complex flow fields and in including physical effects.
In theory, the basic concept of the SPH method …
Punitive Preemption And The First Amendment, Rachel Proctor May
Punitive Preemption And The First Amendment, Rachel Proctor May
San Diego Law Review
In recent years, state legislators have begun passing a new breed of “punitive” preemption laws–those that impose fines, civil and criminal sanctions, and other sanctions on local governments and their officials as a consequence of passing laws or enacting policies that are inconsistent with state laws. This represents a significant change from traditional preemption, under which a local government could enact laws based on its view of preempting state statutes and applicable state constitutional provisions and, if necessary, defend its interpretation in court. When punitive preemption prevents a local lawmaking process from taking place, the state forecloses a unique form …

Composite, multifunctional fine particles are likely to be at the frontier of materials science in the foreseeable future. Here we present a submicron composite particle that mimics the stratified structure of the Earth by having a zero-valent iron core, a silicate/silicide mantle, and a thin carbonaceous crust resembling the biosphere and its biotic deposits. Particles were formulated in a stable colloidal form and made to interact with various types of healthy and cancer cells in vitro. A selective anticancer activity was observed, promising from the point of view of the intended use of the particles for tumor targeting across the …

Decline Of A Foundation Tree Species Due To Invasive Insects Will Trigger Net Release Of Soil Organic Carbon, Danielle Ignace, Aliza Fassler, Jesse Bellemare
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Eastern U.S. forests are witnessing an ecologically disruptive decline in one of the region’s distinctive foundation tree species, the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadenis). The exotic insect pests hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae, HWA) and elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa) have greatly altered many forest ecosystems previously dominated by this important evergreen conifer. The consequences for ecosystem processes are far reaching because hemlock is often replaced by deciduous tree species, such as black birch (Betula lenta), which have strongly divergent effects on forest floor microenvironments and nutrient cycling. We took advantage of an accidental experiment initiated by patch-level timber harvesting ~30 …

Intellectual Property, Income Inequality, And Societal Interconnectivity In The United States: Social Calculus And The Historical Distribution Of Wealth, Brenda Reddix-Smalls
North Carolina Central University Science & Intellectual Property Law Review
Scant attention has been paid to the historical trajectory and effect of the United States’ intellectual property regimes—patenting, copyrighting, and trademarking—as devices which implement racialized property grants and further income and social inequality. This article focuses on just that and argues that the United States Constitution was designed as a property-based and economically-driven social compact which identifies intellectual property interests through a racialized lens. From this view, it is further argued that the Intellectual Property Clause, which itself was designed to incentivize invention and innovation, protected the racialized property interests of the governing elites of the newly established government and …
