Transcriptomic, Functional, And Network Analyses Reveal Novel Genes Involved In The Interaction Between Caenorhabditis Elegans And Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia, Corin V. White, Michael A. Herman
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The bacterivorous nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is an excellent model for the study of innate immune responses to a variety of bacterial pathogens, including the emerging nosocomial bacterial pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The study of this interaction has ecological and medical relevance as S. maltophilia is found in association with C. elegans and other nematodes in the wild and is an emerging opportunistic bacterial pathogen. We identified 393 genes that were differentially expressed when exposed to virulent and avirulent strains of S.maltophilia and an avirulent strain of E. coli. We then used a probabilistic functional gene network model (WormNet) to determine …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sensory nerves detect conditions in the external and internal environment and permit behavioral and physiological responses to maintain homeostasis and ensure survival. As such, sensory nerves detect a wide variety of stimuli including heat, touch, pH, and vibration. The precise nature of these responses is dependent upon the initiating stimulus and site of activation. Potentially threatening stimuli (noxious heat, cellular damage, chemical irritants) activate nociceptive sensory nerves through the gating of ion channels expressed at sensory nerve terminals, thereby evoking defensive reflexes such as cough, watering eyes and limb withdrawal as well as sensations of pain or discomfort. While these …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Resource and environmental monitoring have always been an important part of land sustainable management which ground survey and remote sensing monitoring are two fundamental ways. The crowd sourcing geographic data (CSGD) brought by smart phones provides new opportunity for the ground investigation of resources and environment. Meanwhile, the rapid development of cloud computing makes it possible to allow people to process massive remote sensing data much more efficient and accurate. Compared with traditional data acquisition methods, data in the cloud is easier to acquire and process. Based on this, a big data method for environment monitoring is introduced based on …

Ecosystem Observation And Research Under Background Of Big Data, Yu Guirui, He Honglin, Zhou Yuke
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
As a series of global problems, such as global change and sustainable development, have become the hotspots in the literature, ecological research has evolved from local scale to regional, continental or even global scale. Meanwhile, with the development of sensor and network technology, the focus of ecosystem observations has changed from short-time observations to long-term observations on the macrostructure of ecosystem and the spatio-temporal pattern of ecosystem services, also from the small-scale observation to regional and even global scale network observation and space-ground integrated observation. In summary, ecological studies have entered the big data era. It is a challenge and …

New Challenges And Trends In Bio-Med Big Data, Zhang Guoqing, Li Yixue, Wang Zefeng, Zhao Guoping
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The bio-medical data has entered a new era from exabyte-scale of genomic data to petabyte-scale of multi-dimensional big data, transforming the biological and medical research into a "data-intensive science" that is also referred as the fourth paradigm of discovery. Such transformation presented a set of new challenges:we have to efficiently gather and share high-dimensional and multi-level clinical and research data, further facilitate the comprehensive utilization of various omics data, clinical data, and phenome data of large population, eventually convert big data to new knowledge. Such challenges have to be faced by employing a new series of paradigm shifting ideas. In …

The analysis of behavior requires that the underlying neuronal circuits are identified and genetically isolated. In several major model species-most notably Drosophila-neurogeneticists identify and isolate neural circuits with a binary heterologous expression-control system: Gal4-UASG. One limitation of Gal4-UASG is that expression patterns are often too broad to map circuits precisely. To help refine the range of Gal4 lines, we developed an intersectional genetic AND operator. Interoperable with Gal4, the new system's key component is a fusion protein in which the DNA-binding domain of Gal4 has been replaced with a zinc finger domain with a different DNA-binding specificity. In combination with …

Baldcypress And Black Willow Growth Response To Contrasting Flood Regimes, Climate, And Competition, In The Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana, Alicia Louise Mcalhaney
LSU Master's Theses
Wetlands are dynamic ecosystems distinguished by their dependence on fluctuations of hydrologic influence. Although it is generally accepted that that flooding is a strong influence on growth, and that effects vary depending on whether water is stagnant or flowing, several aspects of flood characteristics and several tree species remain poorly investigated. One source of variability that has not been investigated is how flooding, climate, and competition among trees interact to control growth of individual trees. The objective of this study was therefore to 1) investigate effects of temporally varying hydrology and climate on growth of baldcypress and black willow trees …

Biological Stress Response And Cognitive Vulnerability To Depression In Adolescence, Bridget M. Brush
Biological Stress Response And Cognitive Vulnerability To Depression In Adolescence, Bridget M. Brush
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Depression is the leading cause of worldwide disability. Rates of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) increase exponentially over the adolescent transition, suggesting adolescence represents a key period of risk for the onset of depression. Previous research has associated both biological stress response and cognitive vulnerability with symptoms of depression; however, there is little research examining the joint effects of these two risk factors and symptoms of depression, especially during adolescence. The present study examined the association between symptoms of depression and two established risk factors for depression: cognitive vulnerability, as measured by negative cognitive style, and biological stress response, as measured …
Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir
Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Background
Epigenetics has been proposed as the epicenter of anesthesia research. The epigenetic landscape developed by Waddington reflects that human diversity is likely the result of a myriad of complex interactions between both intracellular and environmental environments, rather than a simple one-to-one protein coding of the genome. A gap in the literature identifies a need to better explore links between epigenetics and anesthesia. No formal educational program on this topic geared toward anesthesia providers was identified based on the comprehensive literature review completed.
Objectives
This study aimed to describe the knowledge of the anesthesia providers including Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists …
Treating Resistance As Data In Qualitative Interviews, Dimitra Kizlari, Kalliopi Fouseki
Treating Resistance As Data In Qualitative Interviews, Dimitra Kizlari, Kalliopi Fouseki
The Qualitative Report
Scientific interviews provide a useful resource for qualitative researchers studying people’s perceptions on contemporary phenomena. This article contributes to the large body of literature on qualitative interviews by investigating a rather common but under-reported pattern in interviews, that of resistance. Resistance is a form of power that the participant maintains and can exercise at any moment. The phenomenon knows various expressions from a refusal on the side of the participant to sign the consent form to question dodging or embellished accounts. Two case studies are used to underpin the basic argument that resistance in interviews may be a valuable finding …

"Effect Of Zinc And Strontium Dopants On The Structure And Stability Of Hydroxyapatite At High Temperatures", Dylan Correll Smith
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a bioceramic that synthetically mimics human bone. It is commonly used in medical applications as a filler for damaged bone, and in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. Doping of HA with elements such as zinc and strontium is known to increase the bioactivity of HA, as well as increase the retention and adsorption of therapeutic molecules for drug delivery. High-temperature, in-situ X-ray diffraction data were measured on 10 at. % zinc-doped, 10 at. % strontium-doped, and undoped HA powders at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. This research studied the temporal and …
An Examination Of The Reciprocal Association Of Collective Efficacy And Community Violence Exposure In Low-Resourced, Urban African American Adolescents, Christopher R. Whipple
An Examination Of The Reciprocal Association Of Collective Efficacy And Community Violence Exposure In Low-Resourced, Urban African American Adolescents, Christopher R. Whipple
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
African American adolescents are exposed to community violence at alarming rates. Compared to Caucasian adolescents, African American adolescents are 112% more likely to be exposed to community violence and 6 to 9 times more likely to be victims of homicide. There are many risk factors and behavioral/emotional issues associated with community violence exposure. Collective Efficacy Theory posited that collective efficacy (i.e., social cohesion and informal social control) influence community violence, and that a reciprocal association exists between collective efficacy and community violence. While the influence of collective efficacy on community violence exposure is established, the influence of community violence exposure …
Executive Functioning In Pediatric Youth: A Meta-Analysis, Draycen D. Decator
Executive Functioning In Pediatric Youth: A Meta-Analysis, Draycen D. Decator
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Executive functioning (EF) represents a set of cognitive skills that are important for daily functioning. EF can be influenced by a number of biopsychosocial factors, many of which are present in the pediatric population (i.e., youth with at least one medical condition). It is important to understand EF in this population as it affects aspects of their physical health (e.g., treatment adherence). Previous meta-analyses have been conducted to examine EF in the pediatric population, and they have generally found deficits in EF compared to healthy peers. However, these previous meta-analyses have only focused on specific medical conditions (e.g., pediatric youth …
Black Virgin Islands Male High School Dropouts: A Qualitative Study, Edward L. Browne
Black Virgin Islands Male High School Dropouts: A Qualitative Study, Edward L. Browne
The Qualitative Report
The dropout phenomenon involving Black Virgin Islands male high school students residing in the United States Virgin Islands has become a major area of concern for parents, educators, policy makers, and other community stakeholders. However, little is known about the direct or indirect factors that lead many Black Virgin Islands male students to drop out of high school. For the actual study, the researcher used a qualitative phenomenological approach to examine the experiences of seven Black Virgin Islands males who dropped out of high school. The study results revealed seven important themes (a) grade retention, (b) disengagement with school officials, …

Cryopreservation is a process where cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling to low sub-zero temperatures, such as (typically) -80°C or -196°C and this process use extensively in programs of in vitro fertilization (IVF). This study is an attempt to evaluate DNA fragmentation in the cell after cryopreservation/thawing cycle when using different types of cryoprotectant (CPA), sixty mature fertile male mice were used in the current study, the mean age of these mice were ten weeks. Fifteen of them were considered as control group and the rest (forty five) as cryopreserved group, this group was divided into three subgroup …
Human Rights And Cultural Heritage: Protecting Museum Professionals During Armed Conflict, Jennifer Lee Reilly
Human Rights And Cultural Heritage: Protecting Museum Professionals During Armed Conflict, Jennifer Lee Reilly
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The purpose of this thesis is to address the issue of protecting museum professionals in areas of armed conflict. Recent conflicts have increased public awareness of cultural heritage sites in danger. Organizations such as UNESCO condemned the destruction of Palmyra and the desecration of the Mosul Museum. Despite the public outrage, there is little consideration given to professionals who work at these institutions and who care for the collections. Examining the historical accounts of museum professionals in conflict zones provides the context to the suggestions made in this text. Possible solutions and methods proposed throughout the text include the expansion …

Uplc-Ms/Ms Analysis Of Dextromethorphan-O-Demethylation Kinetics In Rat Brain Microsomes, Barent N. Dubois, Reza Mehvar
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Formation of dextrorphan (DXT) from dextromethorphan (DXM) has been widely used to assess cytochrome P450 2D (CYP2D) activity. Additionally, the kinetics of CYP2D activity have been well characterized in the liver microsomes. However, studies in brain microsomes are limited due to the lower microsomal content and abundance of CYP2D in the brain relative to the liver. In the present study, we developed a micro-scale enzymatic incubation method, coupled with a sensitive UPLC-MS/MS assay for the quantitation of the rate of DXT formation from DXM in brain microsomes. Rat brain microsomes were incubated with different concentrations of DXM for various times. …
