Transcendence From Below: The Embodied Feminine Mysticism Of Marion Woodman, Lora L. Menter Sep 2018

Transcendence From Below: The Embodied Feminine Mysticism Of Marion Woodman, Lora L. Menter

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article outlines the mystical path followed by Jungian analyst and author Marion Woodman. It unpacks the mystical aspects of Jungian psychology and uses Woodman’s life as a lens to view how the practice of mysticism can operate within alternative psycho-religious belief systems. Woodman deeply embraces mysticism as a transformative, feminist practice by focusing her work on healing the psycho-spiritual effects of patriarchy and the associated repression of women and the body. This paper also discusses how Woodman’s mystical revelations have begun to affect the epistemological foundation of Jungian psychology in a way that echoes the embodied and enactive perspective …

A Matter Of Heart And Soul: The Value Of Positing A Personal Ontological Center For Developmental Psychology, Elizabeth M. Teklinski Sep 2018

A Matter Of Heart And Soul: The Value Of Positing A Personal Ontological Center For Developmental Psychology, Elizabeth M. Teklinski

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

A whole person understanding of postconventional development needs to offer a facilitative agent, what is here called a psychocentric dimension, with a unique and necessary role in the transformation of individual consciousness, that complements and completes the egocentric and cosmocentric domains. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s writings and praxis concerning what they called the psychic being may elucidate an alternative frame to current theoretical speculations, in a way that may offer a new synthesis and a more theoretically satisfying interpretation. More specifically, it is hoped that an integral yoga psychology framework for postconventional development can meaningfully account for the transformation …

After Awakening, The Laundry: Is Nonduality A Spiritual Experience?, Jenny Wade Sep 2018

After Awakening, The Laundry: Is Nonduality A Spiritual Experience?, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Historically the exclusive purview of contemplative religious paths, awakening into nonduality was considered the pinnacle of human attainment, even if, in some traditions, it proved to be the threshold to even more sublime states. Awakening was traditionally available only to dedicated elite seekers, usually renunciates who practiced for years in monastic communities, their progress directed by the authorities of their lineage. Today technologies for creating the electroencephalographic signatures of advanced meditators are available for purchase, and esoteric religious practices like Zen meditation and asana yoga have been secularized as stress-reduction techniques and physical exercise, respectively. Increased numbers of teachers of …

Sri Aurobindo's Formulations Of The Integral Yoga, Debashish Banerji Sep 2018

Sri Aurobindo's Formulations Of The Integral Yoga, Debashish Banerji

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Sri Aurobindo Ghose (1872–1950) developed, practiced and taught a form of yoga, which he named integral yoga. If one peruses the texts he has written pertaining to his teaching, one finds a variety of models, goals, and practices which may be termed formulations or versions of the integral yoga. This article compares three such formulations, aiming to determine whether these are the same, but in different words, as meant for different audiences, or whether they represent different understandings of the yoga based on changing perceptions. The article also tries to compare the versions in terms of differences in emphases and/or …

Subjectivity Is No Object: Can Subject-Object Dualism Be Reconciled Through Phenomenology?, Brent Dean Robbins, Harris L. Friedman, Chad V. Johnson, Zeno Franco Sep 2018

Subjectivity Is No Object: Can Subject-Object Dualism Be Reconciled Through Phenomenology?, Brent Dean Robbins, Harris L. Friedman, Chad V. Johnson, Zeno Franco

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Transpersonal psychology has at times critiqued the broader psychology field for perpetrating a somewhat arbitrary Cartesian subject-object divide. Some phenomenologists claim that reframing this purported divide as an experienced phenomenon can defuse its philosophical impact. If subjective experiences are viewed as continuous with the lifeworld out of which objective phenomena are abstracted, the divide between these is revealed as a somewhat arbitrary, if useful, construction. This, in turn, challenges psychology to engage with subjective phenomena in a more substantive way. In this paper based on excerpts from a protracted email conversation held on the American Psychological Association’s Humanistic Psychology (Division …

Training In Aura Reading: Results From A Small Quasi-Experimental Study In India (Research Note), Srikanth Nagaraja Jois, Sowmya Shivarajapura Nagaraj, Krishnamurthy Nagendra Prasad, Lancy D'Souza

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The aura is believed to be an invisible field surrounding the physical body, interpenetrating and extending beyond it. The present study examines whether appearance of an aura-like phenomenon around the hand can be perceived visually after a short training session. A quasi-experimental research design was employed with 47 participants with a mean age of 19 years. Results from before and after attempting to view an aura-like phenomenon around the hand were analyzed using Contingency Coefficient analysis. The results suggest that an aura-like phenomenon can be detected around the hand since the participants narrated several experiences that were novel (p

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Purpose: Loss of cell-cycle control is a hallmark of cancer, which can be targeted with agents, including cyclin-dependent kinase-4/6 (CDK4/6) kinase inhibitors that impinge upon the G1-S cell-cycle checkpoint via maintaining activity of the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor (RB). This class of drugs is under clinical investigation for various solid tumor types and has recently been FDA-approved for treatment of breast cancer. However, development of therapeutic resistance is not uncommon.

Experimental Design: In this study, palbociclib (a CDK4/6 inhibitor) resistance was established in models of early stage, RB-positive cancer.

Results: This study demonstrates that acquired palbociclib resistance renders cancer …

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Decellularized human adipose tissue has potential clinical utility as a processed biological scaffold for soft tissue cosmesis, grafting, and reconstruction. Adipose tissue decellularization has been accomplished using enzymatic-, detergent-, and/or solvent-based methods. To examine the hypothesis that distinct decellularization processes may yield scaffolds with differing compositions, the current study employed mass spectrometry to compare the proteomes of human adipose-derived matrices generated through three independent methods combining enzymatic-, detergent-, and/or solvent-based steps. In addition to protein content, bioscaffolds were evaluated for deoxyribose nucleic acid depletion, extracellular matrix composition, and physical structure using optical density, histochemical staining, and scanning electron microscopy. Mass …

Is The Food Price Volatility Responsible For Inflation Volatility? An Investigation For Turkey, Kenan Lopcu, Seda Şengül Sep 2018

Is The Food Price Volatility Responsible For Inflation Volatility? An Investigation For Turkey, Kenan Lopcu, Seda Şengül

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of food price and its volatility in the overall level and volatility of inflation measured by the consumer price index (CPI). Appropriate GARCH models are estimated for the food and headline inflation in Turkey as tests confirms the presence of volatility for both. Starting with a hybrid new Keynesian type of Phillips Curve, analyses based on ARDL bounds tests, VAR models and ANN all indicate that food-inflation and the change in exchange rate proxied by the US dollar have significant and lasting impact on the level and the volatility of …

Preferences, Ability, And Intrinsic Motivation, Matthew P. Taylor Sep 2018

Preferences, Ability, And Intrinsic Motivation, Matthew P. Taylor

University Grant Program Reports

I use an experiment to test whether economics experiments that have explored the relationship between cognitive ability and several important economic behaviors have biased estimates because they fail to account for the impact of differences in intrinsic motivation. I find that monetary incentives do not significantly improve subject performance on the types of questions that are commonly used to measure cognitive ability. I also find that estimates of the relationships between cognitive ability and strategic reasoning, trust, and risk aversion are not significantly different whether cognitive ability is measured with or without monetary incentives. Consistent with the existing literature, subjects …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Transition Metal Based Capacitors, Matthew Evenson Sep 2018

Synthesis And Characterization Of Transition Metal Based Capacitors, Matthew Evenson

Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019

As the postindustrial revolution world continues to phase out the use of carbon-based energy sources, it is imperative that work continues to develop improved green energy technologies. To mitigate the energy storage demands of the 21st century, supercapacitors are one of the promising candidates due to their robust nature with a high energy density. Hence, this study extensively investigates the super-capitative behavior of cobalt oxide on two different scaffolds, graphite oxide (GO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Four nanostructures were prepared with varying amounts of cobalt utilizing a modified, simple, and fast microwave irradiation (MWI) process. During the MWI method, …

Investigation Of Binary Nanocomposites Towards High Performance Fuel Cells And Supercapacitor Applications, Frank Beissel Sep 2018

Investigation Of Binary Nanocomposites Towards High Performance Fuel Cells And Supercapacitor Applications, Frank Beissel

Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019

Energy demands continue to grow with a rapidly increasing demand for portable energy sources that exceed the current standards that are in circulation with every new electronic device on the market in an ever-growing global economy. A method commonly investigated are materials with supercapacitance capabilities towards energy storage. Supercapacitors surpass normal fuel cells with a significantly higher number of charge and discharge cycles, the ability to reach a high charge density rapidly, and more readily transferring stored energy. To the end of investigating potential supercapacitor materials, two binary metal nanocomposites were constructed with varying ratios of nickel (10%, and 15%) …

Duloxetine Metabolism In The Presence Of Cytochrome P450 Inhibitors, Astyia Franken-Golden Sep 2018

Duloxetine Metabolism In The Presence Of Cytochrome P450 Inhibitors, Astyia Franken-Golden

Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are important for drug metabolism. They chemically modify drugs to make them more soluble, which allows the drugs to be excreted from the body. Of the 30 CYP enzymes, 6 (CYP1A2, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6, 2E1, 3A4/5) are of clinical interest because these enzymes are the key players in drug metabolism. Differences in genetics lead to individuals of the same species expressing different CYP enzymes. The different combination of CYP enzymes may affect the rate of drug metabolism or produce metabolites that may cause adverse side effects. Predicting drug metabolites and drug-drug interactions is important when designing …
