Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) improves the scope and power of Raman spectroscopy by taking advantage of plasmonic nanostructures, which have the potential to enhance Raman signal strength by several orders of magnitude, which can allow for the detection of analyte molecules. The dataset presented provides results of a computational study that used a finite element method (FEM) to model gold nanowires on a silicon dioxide substrate. The survey calculated the surface average of optical surface enhancement due to plasmonic effects across the entire model and studied various geometric parameters regarding the width of the nanowires, spacing between the nanowires, and …

Phytochromes are red-light photoreceptors that were first characterized in plants, with homologs in photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic bacteria known as bacteriophytochromes (BphPs). Upon absorption of light, BphPs interconvert between two states denoted Pr and Pfr with distinct absorption spectra in the red and far-red. They have recently been engineered as enzymatic photoswitches for fluorescent-marker applications in non-invasive tissue imaging of mammals. This article presents cryo- and room-temperature crystal structures of the unusual phytochrome from the non-photosynthetic myxobacterium Stigmatella aurantiaca (SaBphP1) and reveals its role in the fruitingbody formation of this photomorphogenic bacterium. SaBphP1 lacks a conserved histidine (His) in the chromophore-binding …

Botanical-based miticides, such as neem oil, are used in organic and conventional agronomic production as part of chemical rotation plans to suppress pest mite populations. Other plant-based compounds such as nootkatone (a component of essential oils distilled from grapefruit, Citrus paradisi Macfayden (Rutaceae), and Alaskan yellow cedar, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis [D. Don] Spach [Cupressaceae]), also may serve as effective organic miticides in crop production systems. We report on a lignin-encapsulated (LE) nootkatone formulation (previously effective at repelling ticks) that was evaluated as a miticide against the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). At an application rate of 1 g/L …

Bone marrow microenvironment mediated downregulation of BCL6 is critical for maintaining cell quiescence and modulating therapeutic response in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In the present study, we have performed a high throughput cell death assay using BCL6 knockdown REH ALL cell line to screen a library of FDA-approved oncology drugs. In the process, we have identified a microtubule inhibitor, cabazitaxel (CAB), and a RNA synthesis inhibitor, plicamycin (PLI) as potential anti-leukemic agents. CAB and PLI inhibited cell proliferation in not only the BCL6 knockdown REH cell line, but also six other ALL cell lines. Furthermore, combination of CAB and …

OBJECTIVE—Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is frequently used to treat residual or recurrent nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas. There is no consensus as to whether GKRS should be used early after surgery or if radiosurgery should be withheld until there is evidence of imaging-defined progression of tumor. Given the high incidence of adenoma progression after subtotal resection over time, the present study intended to evaluate the effect of timing of radiosurgery on outcome. METHODS—This is a multicenter retrospective review of patients with nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas who underwent transsphenoidal surgery followed by GKRS from 1987 to 2015 at 9 institutions affiliated with the International …

Intimations Of A Spiritual New Age: Ii. Wilhelm Reich As Transpersonal Psychologist. Part I: Context, Development, And Crisis In Reich’S Bio-Energetic Spiritual Psychology, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Wilhelm Reich is the focus of this second in a series of papers on a group of independent figures from the 1930s into the 1950s—also including Jung, the later Heidegger, Toynbee, Bergson, Teilhard de Chardin, and Simone Weil—who in the context of those years of crisis articulated overlapping visions of a future “New Age” spirituality that might in some more distant future serve to balance and even transform a globalizing materialism and disenchantment with traditional religion. The later Reich developed a highly original version of a “vitalistic” transpersonal psychology, as his “religion for the children of the future,” which needs …

Big Data In Economics, Matthew Harding, Jonathan Hersh
Big Data In Economics, Matthew Harding, Jonathan Hersh
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
Big Data refers to data sets of much larger size, higher frequency, and often more personalized information. Examples include data collected by smart sensors in homes or aggregation of tweets on Twitter. In small data sets, traditional econometric methods tend to outperform more complex techniques. In large data sets, however, machine learning methods shine. New analytic approaches are needed to make the most of Big Data in economics. Researchers and policymakers should thus pay close attention to recent developments in machine learning techniques if they want to fully take advantage of these new sources of Big Data.

Liability Rules For Health Information, Jorge L. Contreras, Francisca Nordfalk
Liability Rules For Health Information, Jorge L. Contreras, Francisca Nordfalk
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
The recent trend toward propertization of health data could pose significant challenges to biomedical research and public health. Property rule systems can result in sizable up-front costs in the acquisition of consent from individual data subjects, as well as the ongoing risk that data subjects will retract consent or object to unanticipated data uses, thus compromising existing data resources and analyses. We argue that property-based approaches to health data should be rejected in favor of liability rule frameworks for the protection of individual privacy interests. We demonstrate that liability rule frameworks for data governance are not only desirable from a …

A Mathematical Model Of Hiv Infection With Cellular And Immune Delays, Nicoleta E. Tarfulea
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We propose an infection age HIV model that considers virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell infections and immune response. This new and more complex model combines and extends the models proposed in [4,9]. We prove that the solution to the associated initialvalue problem is positive and bounded from above. Furthermore, we analyze the stability of the infection-free equilibrium.

Problem Of Longitudinal And Secondary Vertically Waves Reflection And Transmission During Two Media In The Context Of Three Magneto-Thermoelastic Theories With Varies Fields, S. M. Abo-Dahab, Emad E. Mahmoud
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The aim of this paper is study the problem of longitudinal wave (p-wave) and secondary vertically (SV-wave) reflection and transmission during two media in the context of three magneto-thermoelastic theories with varies fields effects as magnetic field and initial stress. We deal the problem of reflection and transmission of thermoelastic waves at interface between two different media in the presence of initial stress and magnetic field, in the context of CT (Classical theory), GL (Green-Lindsay) and DPL (Dual Phase Lag). The boundary conditions applied at the interface as continuity of the displacement, neglecting the tangential displacement, continuity of normal force per …
Dynamics Of Zika Virus Model With Nonlinear Incidence And Optimal Control Strategies, Samson Olaniyi
Dynamics Of Zika Virus Model With Nonlinear Incidence And Optimal Control Strategies, Samson Olaniyi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We formulate and analyze Zika virus transmission model with three nonlinear forces of infection from infected mosquito, asymptomatic and symptomatic humans. The sensitivity indexes of the associated parameters of the model with respect to the basic reproduction number are calculated to identify intervention strategies for prevention and control of Zika virus. Multiple time-dependent optimal controls are considered. The analysis based on the use of optimal control theory made popular by Pontryagin’s maximum principle is carried out, and the resulting optimality system is quantitatively simulated to investigate the impact of the controls on the dynamics of Zika virus. In addition, the …

A Survey On The Oscillation Of Differential Equations With Several Non-Monotone Arguments, G. M. Moremedi, I. P. Stavroulakis
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Consider the first-order linear differential equation with several retarded arguments x′ (t)+?mi =1 pi (t)x (ti (t)) = 0, t ≥ t0, where the functions pi, ti ∈ C [t0,¥) , R+ , for every i = 1,2, . . . ,m, ti (t) ≤ t for t ≥ t0 and limt→¥ti (t) = ¥. A survey of the most interesting oscillation conditions are presented. An example illustrating the results is given.

In this work, we investigated the effects of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) on copper redox-mediated free radical generation and cell injury. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometry in conjunction with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline -oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap, we found that GQDs at a concentration as low as 1 μg/ml significantly inhibited Cu(II)/HO-mediated hydroxyl radical formation. GQDs also blocked Cu(II)-catalyzed nucleophilic addition of HO to DMPO to form a DMPO-OH adduct in the absence of HO, suggesting a potential for GQDs to inhibit copper redox activity. Indeed, we observed that the presence of GQDs prevented HO-mediated reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) …
