Weight-Length Summaries For Western Australian Fish Species Derived From Surveys Of Recreational Fishers At Boat Ramps, C.B. Smallwood, Alissa Tate, Karina L. Ryan
Fisheries Research Reports
Estimates of recreational catch from boat-based recreational fishers have been generated in Western Australia since 2011/12 using an integrated survey comprising off-site Phone-Diary Surveys, on-site Boat Ramp Surveys and Remote Camera Surveys. The primary purpose of the Boat Ramp Surveys is to determine an average weight for key species to convert estimates of recreational catch by numbers (determined from the Phone-Diary Survey) to harvest weight for comparison with catches from the commercial sector.
The Pennsylvania Post Conviction Relief Act: Recent Developments, Thomas M. Place
The Pennsylvania Post Conviction Relief Act: Recent Developments, Thomas M. Place
Faculty Scholarly Works
The Post Conviction Relief Act ("PCRA" or "the Act") establishes a procedure of defendants to collaterally challenge their conviction or sentence. It is the sole means of obtaining state relief following conviction and sentencing. The PCRA has been broadly interpreted as creating a unified statutory framework for reviewing claims that were traditionally cognizable in state habeas corpus. The Act permits defendants in custody to seek relief when the conviction or sentence results in one or more of the Act's enumerated errors or defects and the claimed error has not been waived or previously litigated on direct appeal or in a …
Grief And Its Implications In Childhood And Adolescence, Electa C. Willander
Grief And Its Implications In Childhood And Adolescence, Electa C. Willander
Student Publications
Death has always been a taboo subject. However, it is impossible for anyone to avoid death in terms of their loved ones or their own mortality. Therefore it is impossible to avoid the at times overbearing emotion of grief. Grief can be exposed in the light of someone passing, loss of a relationship, diminishing health, loss of a job, and even loss in athletic ability. There is no singular reason for grief to be present, nor are there simple and straightforward ways to cope and move forward. Grief on the individual and universal scale has no time frame. It is …

Non-Locality, Precognition & Spirit From The Physics Point Of View, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Non-Locality, Precognition & Spirit From The Physics Point Of View, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
There are various supernatural phenomena which can hardly be explained by the existing mainstream science, for instance non-local interactions (e.g. ESP) and also precognitive interdictions. And there are other problems such as how to include the Spirit in the framework of physics. For example, it has been known for long time that intuition plays significant role in many professions and human life, including entrepreneurship, government, and also in detective or law enforcement activities. Despite these examples, such a precognitive interdiction is hardly accepted in mainstream science. In this paper, we discuss non-local interactions and advanced solutions of Maxwell equations, and …
How Many Points Are There In A Line Segment? A New Answer From Discrete Cellular Space Viewpoint, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
How Many Points Are There In A Line Segment? A New Answer From Discrete Cellular Space Viewpoint, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
While it is known that Euclid’s five axioms include a proposition that a line consists at least of two points, modern geometry avoid consistently any discussion on the precise definition of point, line, etc. It is our aim to clarify one of notorious question in Euclidean geometry: how many points are there in a line segment? – from discrete-cellular space (DCS) viewpoint. In retrospect, it may offer an alternative of quantum gravity, i.e. by exploring discrete gravitational theories. To elucidate our propositions, in the last section we will discuss some implications of discrete cellular-space model in several areas of interest: …

Visualizing Extreme Precipitation For Climate Storytelling, Rachel Phinney
Visualizing Extreme Precipitation For Climate Storytelling, Rachel Phinney
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Precipitation can have adverse effects in the climate ecosystem. Too much can impose concerns such as flooding and landslides, resulting in damaged property, agricultural losses, and loss of life. Too little, and drought becomes an issue, inducing wildfires, poor air quality, agricultural losses, and health degradation. The contiguous United States has experienced an increase in precipitation since 1900, and much of this has occurred in the most recent decades. By the end of the 21st Century, it is expected that more winter and spring precipitation will occur over the northern portion of the U.S., and less in the southwest. While …

Analysis Of The Set/Fty720 Complex By Nmr Reveals A Unique Mechanism For The Activation Of Pp2a, Ryan M. De Palma
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a major serine/threonine phosphatase with tumor suppressor function. PP2A holoenzyme contains numerous combinations of its various isoforms of scaffolding (A), regulatory (B), and catalytic (C) subunits. In many cancer types, an endogenous PP2A inhibitor, inhibitor 2 of PP2A (SET) oncoprotein, is overexpressed, resulting in PP2A inhibition, leading to enhanced cell growth, and attenuation of cell death. It is known that targeting SET with bioactive sphingolipid ceramide or sphingolipid analogue drug FTY720 leads to the reactivation of PP2A, leading to necroptosis. However, structural details of the interaction between SET and FTY720 (or ceramide) with regards to …

Natural And Artificial Object Recognition: The Superiority Of Natural Shape Features, Lauren Pedersen
Natural And Artificial Object Recognition: The Superiority Of Natural Shape Features, Lauren Pedersen
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of 44 young adults (mean age = 21.7 years) to compare natural and artificial three-dimensional (3-D) objects using their senses of vision and touch. Previous research has indicated that the information content provided by a stimulus set can have a significant effect on a participant’s ability to perform cross-modal object recognition tasks. A primary goal of the present study was to understand what shape features are transferable between visual and haptic modalities. Participants haptically manipulated objects from one of two stimulus sets: bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) and sinusoidally-modulated spheres (SIMS). …

Regulation Of Kv11.1 Potassium Channel C-Terminal Isoform Expression By The Rna-Binding Proteins Hur And Hud, Qiuming Gong, Matthew R. Stump, Zhengfeng Zhou
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
The potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 2 (KCNH2) gene encodes the Kv11.1 potassium channel, which conducts the rapidly activating delayed rectifier current in the heart. KCNH2 pre-mRNA undergoes alternative polyadenylation and forms a functional, full-length Kv11.1a isoform if exon 15 is polyadenylated or a nonfunctional, C-terminally truncated Kv11.1a-USO isoform if intron 9 is polyadenylated. The molecular mechanisms that regulate Kv11.1 isoform expression are poorly understood. In this study, using HEK293 cells and reporter gene expression, pulldown assays, and RNase protection assays, we identified the RNA-binding proteins Hu antigen R (HuR) and Hu antigen D (HuD) as regulators of Kv11.1 …
Genderfucking Non-Disclosure: Sexual Fraud, Transgender Bodies, And Messy Identities, Florence Ashley
Genderfucking Non-Disclosure: Sexual Fraud, Transgender Bodies, And Messy Identities, Florence Ashley
Dalhousie Law Journal
If I don't tell you that I was assigned male at birth, as a transgender person, can I go to jail for sexual assault by fraud? In some jurisdictionslike England or Israel, the answer is: yes. Previous arguments against this criminalisation have focused on the realness of trans people's genders: since trans men are men and trans women are women, it is not misleading for them to present as they do. Highlighting the limitationsofthis position, which doesn't fully account for the messiness ofgendered experiences, the author puts forward an argument against the criminalisation of (trans)gender history non-disclosure rooted in privacy. …

Decadal Effects Of Thinning On Understory Light Environments And Plant Community Structure In A Subtropical Forest, Ho-Chen Tsai, Jyh-Min Chiang, Ryan Mcewan, Teng-Chiu Lin
Biology Faculty Publications
Canopy-opening disturbance such as thinning has immediate and substantive effects on understory microclimate and therefore the establishment and growth of understory plants. A large number of studies have reported the effects of thinning on tree growth, but few studies have examined long-term effects of thinning on understory light environments and species and functional diversity of understory plants. Even less is known whether the change in understory plant community structure observed following canopy disturbance is short-lived and would diminish as the canopy closes or a long lasting due to legacy effects. We examined the effects of an experimental removal of 25% …

Sports As A Resiliency Factor In Native American Youth, Martin Robison
Sports As A Resiliency Factor In Native American Youth, Martin Robison
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities face unique issues due to historical and continued colonization, genocide, and forced assimilation (Stumblingbear-Riddle & Romans, 2012). AI/AN youth must address intergenerational trauma related to high rates of adverse childhood life events (Duran, 2006, Waller et al. 2002). Native American youth have the challenge of balancing their individual traditional culture with mainstream culture (Waller et al., 2002). Sports are one way that AI/AN communities are able to express themselves (Bloom, 2000). Participation in high school sports has been associated with various academic and social benefits (Fredricks & Eccles, 2006). Identifying the coping skills and support …

The Need To Revisit Legal Education In An Era Of Increased Diagnoses Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity And Autism Spectrum Disorders, Heidi E. Ramos-Zimmerman
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
The ever-fluctuating rhetoric from experts, in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders, has led to outdated notions and perplexity surrounding attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This Article tries to clarify some of the confusion. Better understanding of these disorders is imperative for today’s law professor, since law schools are likely admitting more students diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. This Article discusses the need for change in legal instruction and explores the link between the two disorders. An examination of recent history illuminates some of the commonly held misunderstandings and highlights the disparity in the diagnoses of ADHD …

Regeneration Of Neurotransmission Transcriptome In A Model Of Epileptic Encephalopathy After Antiinflammatory Treatment, Dumitru Iacobas, Libor Velisek
NYMC Faculty Publications
Inflammation is an established etiopathogenesis factor of infantile spasms (IS), a therapy-resistant epileptic syndrome of infancy. We investigated the IS-associated transcriptomic alterations of neurotransmission in rat hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, how they are corrected by antiinflamatory treatments and whether there are sex differences. IS was triggered by repeated intraperitoneal administration of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid following anti-inflammatory treatment (adreno-cortico-tropic-hormone (ACTH) or PMX53) or normal saline vehicle to prenatally exposed to betamethasone young rats. We found that treatments with both ACTH and PMX53 resulted in substantial recovery of the genomic fabrics of all types of synaptic transmission altered by IS. While ACTH represents the …

Cystamine And Cysteamine As Inhibitors Of Transglutaminases In Vivo, Thomas M. Jeitner, John T. Pinto, Arthur J. L. Cooper
NYMC Faculty Publications
Cystamine is commonly used as a transglutaminase inhibitor. This disulfide undergoes reduction in vivo to the aminothiol compound, cysteamine. Thus, the mechanism by which cystamine inhibits transglutaminase activity in vivo could be due to either cystamine or cysteamine, which depends on the local redox environment. Cystamine inactivates transglutaminases by promoting the oxidation of two vicinal cysteine residues on the enzyme to an allosteric disulfide, whereas cysteamine acts as a competitive inhibitor for transamidation reaction catalyzed by this enzyme. The latter mechanism is likely to result in the formation of a unique biomarker, N -(gamma-glutamyl)cysteamine that could serve to indicate how …
