Genotype Fingerprints Enable Fast And Private Comparison Of Genetic Testing Results For Research And Direct-To-Consumer Applications., Max Robinson, Gustavo Glusman
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Genetic testing has expanded out of the research laboratory into medical practice and the direct-to-consumer market. Rapid analysis of the resulting genotype data now has a significant impact. We present a method for summarizing personal genotypes as 'genotype fingerprints' that meets these needs. Genotype fingerprints can be derived from any single nucleotide polymorphism-based assay, and remain comparable as chip designs evolve to higher marker densities. We demonstrate that these fingerprints support distinguishing types of relationships among closely related individuals and closely related individuals from individuals from the same background population, as well as high-throughput identification of identical genotypes, individuals in …

Paper lab notebooks have been essentially unchanged for centuries, but as data gathering is increasingly digital and problems of reproducibility and retracted publications emerge, more researchers are switching to electronic lab notebooks (ELN), also known as electronic research notebooks (ERN). While it has lab in its name, LabArchives is flexible enough for many uses across research disciplines. LabArchives is an ERN produced by Elsevier and provided by Jefferson at no additional charge to all its staff, students and faculty.

Applications Of Electronic-Nose Technologies For Noninvasive Early Detection Of Plant, Animal And Human Diseases, Alphus Dan Wilson
KIP Articles
The development of electronic-nose (e-nose) technologies for disease diagnostics was initiated in the biomedical field for detection of biotic (microbial) causes of human diseases during the mid-1980s. The use of e-nose devices for disease-diagnostic applications subsequently was extended to plant and animal hosts through the invention of new gas-sensing instrument types and disease-detection methods with sensor arrays developed and adapted for additional host types and chemical classes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) closely associated with individual diseases. Considerable progress in animal disease detection using e-noses in combination with metabolomics has been accomplished in the field of veterinary medicine with new …

Repellent Effects Of Methyl Anthranilate On Western Corn Rootworm Larvae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Soil Bioassays, E. J. Bernklau, B. E. Hibbard, L. B. Bjostad
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Methyl anthranilate (MA), a compound in maize roots that is repellent to western corn rootworm larvae (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) was tested in behavioral bioassays in a soil environment. MA prevented larvae from locating roots of a maize seedling, and the repellency strengthened with increasing rates of MA. In a simple push– pull strategy between an MA-treated seedling and an untreated seedling, granules containing 0.1 mg/g MA pushed larvae to the untreated seedling. This push effect increased with dose, with 90% repellency observed for the highest dose tested (100 mg/g). Chemical analysis showed that MA concentrations remained high for 4 …

The Power Of Rhetoric In Game Of Thrones: How Gender And Language Reflect Character Development, Keely Phillips
Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis draws connections between literary studies, gender studies, and rhetorical studies to analyze how gender and language reflect character development in Game of Thrones. In this thesis, I use the literary studies approach of close reading in conjunction with methodologies from Gender Studies and Rhetoric to analyze how gender and language inform character development in Game of Thrones. I propose that the female characters, particularly Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, are far more successful than their male counterparts in terms of developing as characters and mastering the language around them, giving them access to social and political power.

True Believers: How An Unshakeable Faith Led To An Uncommon Future For Six Catholic Nuns, Susan Van Dusen
Theses and Dissertations
In 2007, six Sisters of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge in Hot Springs, Arkansas, were excommunicated from the Catholic Church due to their membership in a Canadian-based Marian devotional group called the Army of Mary. Using the style of literary journalism, this thesis tells the nuns’ life stories, from their childhoods and lifetimes of service to the Church through their willful decision to accept excommunication and the status of their lives more than a decade later. It also examines the Army of Mary, its controversial role within the Catholic Church, and the belief by its members that foundress Marie-Paule …

Religion, Racism, And Ecological Stress Among African-American Families: A Qualitative Analysis Of Perceptions And Coping Strategies, Johnnie W. Jones
Religion, Racism, And Ecological Stress Among African-American Families: A Qualitative Analysis Of Perceptions And Coping Strategies, Johnnie W. Jones
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Americans do not reside in what many consider now a Post-Racial society. A remarkable number of researchers found that African Americans are more likely than any other racial group to experience racism, manifested by racist attitudes and practices, which negatively affect their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing (health). Very importantly, numerous scholarly works have examined racism and Black women qualitatively. Unfortunately, less has been known about the personal processes and meaning-making mechanisms of Black married couples and African American males in terms of how they cope with racism, and ecological stress. To address this gap, this study uses qualitative …
Using Machine Learning To Accurately Predict Ambient Soundscapes From Limited Data Sets, Katrina Lynn Pedersen
Using Machine Learning To Accurately Predict Ambient Soundscapes From Limited Data Sets, Katrina Lynn Pedersen
Theses and Dissertations
The ability to accurately characterize the soundscape, or combination of sounds, of diverse geographic areas has many practical implications. Interested parties include the United States military and the National Park Service, but applications also exist in areas such as public health, ecology, community and social justice noise analyses, and real estate. I use an ensemble of machine learning models to predict ambient sound levels throughout the contiguous United States. Our data set consists of 607 training sites, where various acoustic metrics, such as overall daytime L50 levels and one-third octave frequency band levels, have been obtained. I have data for …

Dynamics as well as localization of Ca2+ transients plays a vital role in liver function under homeostatic conditions, repair, and disease. In response to circulating hormonal stimuli, hepatocytes exhibit intracellular Ca2+ responses that propagate through liver lobules in a wave-like fashion. Although intracellular processes that control cell autonomous Ca2+ spiking behavior have been studied extensively, the intra- and inter-cellular signaling factors that regulate lobular scale spatial patterns and wave-like propagation of Ca2+ remain to be determined. To address this need, we acquired images of cytosolic Ca2+ transients in 1300 hepatocytes situated across several mouse liver lobules over a period of …

The Bayh-Dole Act of 1980 established a new default rule that allowed nonprofit organizations and small businesses to own, as a routine matter, patents on inventions resulting from research sponsored by the federal government. Although universities helped get the Bayh-Dole Act through Congress, the primary goal, as reflected in the recitals at the beginning of the new statute, was not to benefit universities but to promote the commercial development and utilization of federally funded inventions. In the years since the passage of the Bayh-Dole Act, universities seem to have lost sight of this distinction. Their behavior as patent seekers, patent …

The Role Of Antipodal Connectivity Structure On Cognitive Functions And Mental Disorders, Bayazit Karaman
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding physiological processes in the brain requires formal system models. Furthermore, connectivity is a core component of such models. According to recent studies, 70% of all information within the cortical regions in the brain passed through only 20\% of information processing nodes, commonly referred as "Connector Hub Nodes" (CHNs). Knowledge of these CHNs not only help to understand the information processing behavior of the cortex but also reveals the impact of neurogenerative diseases that affect the functional brain connectivity. CHNs have been previously identified using functional magnetic resonance imaging (f-MRI) method, however, we believe that Electroencephalography (EEG), despite its low …

On Biospeleothems From A Venezuelan Tepui Cave: U-Th Dating, Growth Rates, And Morphology, Joyce Lundberg, Charles Brewer-Carías, Donald A. Mcfarlane
International Journal of Speleology
Seven silica biospeleothems from Cueva Charles Brewer, Chimantá Plateau, Venezuela have been successfully U-Th dated despite very low U and high detrital Th concentrations. Growth rates are low, between ~100 to ~800 µm/ka, and are greater closer to water level. Dates in unaltered material are in good stratigraphic order, but secondary silicification may compromise the U-Th system, yielding unreliable sequences of ages. Detritally-enriched layers correlate with global climate cycles of the Late Quaternary, in particular the cooler, drier phases of MIS 5d, 5a, and 4. SEM studies indicate that the peloidal material is made up of silica nano-particles assembled to …

Introduction:
Significant disparities in immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy have persisted, and may even be increasing, despite large-scale efforts to minimize them, such as the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998. Immediate breast reconstruction has been shown to lead to higher rates of surgical satisfaction, minimize delay in post-operative cancer treatment, and improve the quality of life and overall well-being of mastectomy patients. However only 25-40% of eligible women in the United States receive reconstruction. The rate of reconstruction is even lower in African American and Hispanic women compared to White women. To better understand this disparity, …

While previous research suggests children have successfully acted as health change agents, no studies have examined the role of children in promoting environmental health knowledge and awareness. This study describes parent perceptions of the impact of a five-day water-focused environmental health summer camp on elementary school children in an American Indian community. We interviewed parents about their perception of changes in their child's environmental health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Parents in this study confirmed that their child had shared information related to the camp activities. In addition, parents perceived that their children had increased knowledge and positive changes in attitudes …

ABSTRACT
This study attempts to clarify the associations between macro-social and social network factors and continuing racial disparities in breast cancer survival. The study improves on prior methodologies by using a neighborhood disadvantage measure that assesses both economic and social disadvantage and an ego-network measurement tool that assesses key social network characteristics. Our population-based sample included 786 breast cancer patients (nHWhite=388; nHBlack=398) diagnosed during 2005-2008 in Chicago, IL. The data included census-derived macro-social context, self-reported social network, self-reported demographic and medically abstracted health measures. Mortality data from the National Death Index (NDI) were used to determine 5-year survival.

Disentangling The Effects Of Acculturation And Duration In The United States On Latina Immigrant Maternal Overweight And Macrosomia, Miguel Ceballos, Andrea Cantarero, Shanell Sanchez
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
A significant body of research on minority health shows that while Latina immigrants experience unexpectedly favorable outcomes in maternal and infant health in the United States, this advantage deteriorates with increased duration of residency. This study assesses the relationship between excessively high birth weight (macrosomia), maternal weight, and length of residency in the United States. A sample of Mexican immigrant women living in two Midwestern communities in the United States is used to analyze the effects of duration in the United States, acculturation on birth outcomes, and maternal overweight once controlling for social, behavioral, and environmental mediators of health status. …

We present the case of a 46-year old patient with Child-Pugh class C cirrhosis with MEDL-Score 16, and hepatocellular carcinoma invading the inferior vena cava and the right atrium. The etiology of cirrhosis is type 1 hereditary hemochromatosis with positive HFE C282Y/C282Y and H63D/H63D mutations. A systematic review of the literature was performed and only 30 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma with tumor thrombosis extending into the right atrium have been described. To our knowledge, this is the first case that evidences the presence in hereditary hemochromatosis of hepatocellular carcinoma with atypical invasion into the right atrium. Screening of patients with …
